      I don't agree with disliking or liking a video without watching it, however, there are multiple reasons why his might be done.
      -People don't want this general type of content in such a quantity on this channel. most videos here recently are on the same tired, often disingenuously presented.
      -Reading the description and basing the opinion on that.
      -Knowing the Women's Equality Party

      Well, in the first four minutes she cracked about a dozen horrible jokes, has said "OK" 475 times and just made the hyperbolic claim that throughout human evolution there has not been a single society where men and women have had equality. That's dislike-worthy for me.

    Reading the comments here. It seems that most people want women to be subservient and stay at home.
    What Sandi wants (and she is amazing by the way, with me being British she's always been brilliant to listen to) is women to have equal opportunities as men.
    Now I imagine the comments will say that of course women have opportunities but when you have a system that does not cater for women in positions of power either via social networks (ie getting friends to work with you) or having positive role models. The point she makes about sport and the top 100 FTSE CEO proves there aren't those role models.
    It's a lot easier to name more male sport stars (David Beckham or Eli Manning) and CEOs (Bill Gates, Elon Musk or Steve Jobs) than it is to name female ones.
    And statistically you can not say men are smarter than women when women now are more likely to be in higher education than men. It just needs social changes of attitudes.
    Remember 100 years ago, women and people of colour were not deemed to be smart enough to vote. Ideals and norms change and we all need to check ourselves for our privilege sometimes.

    • @AntonoirJacques
      @AntonoirJacques 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Chaos Theory Why not? This is about equality. It's about women having the confidence to go for jobs they want to go for.
      Right now, STEM subjects are about 80% studied by men. And I don't believe it's because women are not smart enough to do those things, but when society works against you its a lot harder to get into these types of subjects.
      And if you don't believe society isn't working against women, just read the other comments. All pretty much hate filled.

    • @maxybaer123
      @maxybaer123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Antony Jones 2 things 1) Do you think that if a woman made pay pal that it would have made less money same for Apple or Microsoft. All of those CEOs are either some of the richest people in the world Bill Gates Steve Jobs or put themselves out there Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and especially Elon Musk 2) She didn't want equal opportunity she wanted equal rights while those might seem similar they are not.

    • @AntonoirJacques
      @AntonoirJacques 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      maxybaer123 Actually statically I don't believe it would have made as much money. The whole point of the glass ceiling is because men are already in top positions they know more men in top positions. Having better social contacts (and a man is more likely to use a male contact than female for various reasons) means creating a successful business will be easier.
      And equal opportunities and equal rights are two sides of the same coin. Both are important for equality.

    • @AntonoirJacques
      @AntonoirJacques 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chaos Theory Communism is very different to women's equality. I would also say how many famous women were there in Soviet Russia so it wasn't exactly egalitarian was it?
      And there is a correlation between a lack of women at the top and discrimination and injustice. Because if those things were completely absent, there would be more definitely women in those positions.

    • @olvrhffmnn
      @olvrhffmnn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, feminism does not want equal opportunity. Feminism wants female privilege. Feminism uses pre-existing notions such as equality or equal opportunity to push for female privilege. Does the women's equality party also push for equality when equality would benefit men? No, because it's not the universal equality party. It's the women's equality party. It wants female privilege and it calls female privilege "equality for women".

    I'm going to guess that people disliked because it's feminist. But maybe if you watch the video you'll realise that not one point she made was wrong. The gender pay gap thing was possibly the only thing but her solution to it was "Get more women in the boardroom" which is the correct solution. She acknowledged the equal pay act and she acknowledged that women have the same rights to vote. She gave actual statistics, actual concerns and actual reasons behind her dissatisfaction. Yes, there are men's issues too, but she never said that men have no problems, she was pointing out woman's problems in this talk. How about you listen to what she has to say and take it on board. Accepting that women aren't equal to men doesn't mean that you have to stop worrying about men's issues, nor does it mean that you become a fully fledged feminist. It just means that you become aware of all the issues in the world.

      The more free a country is the more drastic the gender "gap" is. In China and India women have more well paying jobs percentage wise than the so progressive Sweden. How can that be, its almost like if given a choice women don't want the jobs men do. So are we going to force women into jobs they don't want? Or force men out of jobs to make room? Appoint women to positions they haven't EARNED because parity of outcomes? Social Justice can't be measured so there can never be parity regardless of how many kulaks are disposed of.

    • @TheCreativeKruemel
      @TheCreativeKruemel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't understand a free market. It regulates itself. So the "gender pay gap" is the "fault" of woman not men.

    • @johnnyjohnson4214
      @johnnyjohnson4214 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trav McDonald Notice how I said that the one point I wasn't in total agreement with was the gender pay gap. Yes, a woman is more likely to choose to be a housewife than a man. I was agreeing with her point that there shouldn't be this disparity in business. The lack of high ranking women is a major contributor to the pay gap (As in the average pay for all women one) and women should have more of a presence in this field. No one has ever suggested taking men out of jobs.

    • @johnnyjohnson4214
      @johnnyjohnson4214 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      eu4eagle ha, someone who believes in bullshit. This wonderful free market regulated itself enough to create the biggest economic crash of the last 80 years. It also regulates itself enough to create monopolies to drive up prices for consumers. It regulates enough to keep power within families and small groups. It's regulated itself so that 80% of wealth is spread between the top 1%. Do you think it will regulate itself enough to maintain gender equality?

      Honestly, that one is at least debatable. You could go on about how it's forcing women to have abortions etc. I don't agree with that but there is more of a case to be made than blatant bias in cases like the sentencing gap, incarceration, custody of children, and the Nottinghamshire thing with misogynistic "hate crimes".

    • @PistonAvatarGuy
      @PistonAvatarGuy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      ***** That's not the argument at all. Women should be able to do whatever they want with their child, but they shouldn't be able to force men into paying for that child. If women aren't required to pay for a child they produce, men shouldn't be forced to either.

    • @mistergregar9815
      @mistergregar9815 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Denis Brezovsky
      You don't have to force women to get an abortion to give men that same freedom. Just allow men to financially abort the child. That means that they cut all ties with that family, and won't be held financially responsible for it. That way you won't see men being forced to pay for babies they never intended to have, or as happens in some states, men who where the victims of rape being forced to pay child support to the women who took advantage of them.

    • @denisbrezovsky5271
      @denisbrezovsky5271 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mister Gregar
      I ment that you could argue that a lot of women would not be able to support a child, therefore forcing them to abortion. I don't agree with that, but it could be used as a point.

    The wonderfully funny, witty, enchanting and incredibly intelligent Sandi Toksvig has stirred up the TH-cam commenter's here. It seems to me that many people cannot handle truth thrown at them. Sandi provides not only facts, but the source of information too. Everything she says is in numbers, online and easy for you to access. If you don't believe her, then check the sources. Ask yourself very simple questions:
    1. Do women have representation in sports?
    2. Are some women better than some men at certain sports?
    3. Do women have representation in the history we study at schools?
    4. What do you think the reason for that is?
    5. Do women tend to have less paid jobs?
    6. Why do you think that is?
    7. Do women own run less companies than men?
    8. Why do you think that is?
    9. Do you think women have less representation in society? (traffic lights are of a man, we say "man-kind", the drawing of evolution is always of a man)?
    10. Why do you think that is?
    11. Is Sandi Toksvig wrong about anything she said?
    12. Can you provide evidence?
    13. Is Sandi Toksvig doing the wrong thing?
    14. Is what Sandi Toksvig advocating for harmful?
    15. Do men have problems in society aswell?
    16. Why do they have problems?
    17. Is it fair to say that women do not suffer inequality, but men do?
    18. Is it normal than in a world with 50% men and 50% women, there can be such a massive difference in representation? Is it fair?
    The dislikes on this video but lack of appropiate responses demonstrate something very convincing: a lot of modern society believes that we live in an equal society because that what it seems. But the numbers don't add up: more men in power, more men in politics, more men in sports (and don't go talking about biology - there's nothing in men's biology that gets us televised), more men in jobs, more men in history, more men in pretty much everything. Even in sectors some consider to be for women such as cooking and fashion. These are numbers none of you can deny. Stop pretending everything is fine and jolly, and look at the numbers.

I know I'm playing devil's advocate here, but in the sake of honesty, we shouldn't stoop to the level of people behaving like those that you are describing. I think the overall rating of the video translates something. It might be pure hate/or resentment towards the ideology behind the talk, or towards the title of the talk, or simply that most viewers have watched the video, and didn't like it. (Or other reasons, who knows...)

    • @myriadmaestro572
      @myriadmaestro572 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well said. Everyone deserves rights, not just a single race or gender. That is why things such as Women's Rights and Black Lives Matter annoys me to such an extent. Saying these things implies that somehow not all people deserve equal treatment. The argument should be less about ethnicity and gender and more how we can fix the problems at hand.

    • @notmartin-v2k
      @notmartin-v2k 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      No. To say "women's rights" or "women's representation" or "black lives matter" or "support gay marriage" or "don't be biphobic" or "don't be transphobic" is to point out that these particular minorities are not being represented in society the way straight white men are. It is to spot the victims. Did you feel like banners saying "support gay marriage" also meant that they didn't support heterosexual marriage? Do you feel like saying Black Lives Matter is also saying that white lives don't?

    • @myriadmaestro572
      @myriadmaestro572 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I would say that it depends on the context. For instance, 1st Wave Feminism along with the Civil Rights Movements were both necessary. It was important to distinguish that these groups were human beings that deserved the same right. However, things such as 3rd Wave Feminism, the Anti-Defamation League, and Black Lives Matter have ceased to be equal rights and more about special treatment motivated by bitterness towards events that happened in the past.
      Not to mention the attitude of these groups can be quite antagonistic. On multiple occasions, when I try to voice my disagreements about groups such as Black Lives Matter and the Anti-Defamation League, I am usually met with some kind of hostility. My problem with these groups lies within is their passive-aggressive hostility towards opposing views and an obnoxious sense of ethical superiority.
      I support rights for African-Americans, and for the transgendered, and, of course, for homosexuals such as myself. I do not support all of these godforsaken cry-bully groups parading around claiming that they are acting like obnoxious twats on the behalf of other people. I want nothing to do with them or their shallow, worthless identity politics.

    • @dirtypure2023
      @dirtypure2023 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Martin Hare Regardless of the original intentions behind the Black Lives Matter hashtag and subsequent movement, the group has since morphed into the black KKK. It's not hard to find video of BLM protesters chanting blatantly anti-white racist slogans. Worse, BLM groups have been filmed deliberately inciting violence against white people, and then carrying out violent acts against white people who just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. In other words, and entire mob of BLM extremists punching and kicking an innocent white person for simply being white. When a social justice movement becomes the very thing it claims to oppose, the rest of society has a responsibility to denounce that movement, and doing so without regard for political correctness (which, it turns out, is a devious tool society uses to inflict tyranny upon itself).

      Really, you are annoyed that Black people still not only feel, but are statistically discriminated against, underrepresented in governments and police forces, and got truly fed up after some highly publicized killings at the hands of 'peace officers'? I'm so terribly sorry you are annoyed by any minority group who demands equal rights as you. Discrimination and injustices exist, against everyone, nearly all the time. That doesn't mean you get to write it off because you lack the basic human skills of empathy. And to your last point, that is exactly what these groups focus on and dedicated their resources too, and yet hear you are, annoyed that they want exactly that.

      2. So because a man committing suicide is not necessarily a woman's fault, that gives feminists the right to protest meetings trying to find a solution to it even if that talk has absolutely nothing to do with women?

Not to mention my proportions (cof, cof) and despite of that, trust me, spreading legs is unnecessary and it just denotes inconscient male chauvinism gestures. It is just that you don't realize that... or you don't want to accept it. Those are men being ridiculous and provocative. Plain and simple. Deserved to be punished. Not to mention that they keep space for them that could be for others. It is a lack of social space efficiency and consciousness too.
      2.- Women, men, feminists or not (both) can and have to talk about ALL issues regarding social inequalities. Actually that is what feminists do = trying to find solutions for the society in which women can participate and get involved as same as a man.

Feminists don't support female chauvinists just because they don't believe in superiority of no one. They want equality between men and women. Plain and simple. A-B-C. Apples and oranges for you kid.
      2.- I recommend you one thing in order to not get banned from this comment section: Use some average IQ vocabulary and statements and you will be allowed to continue in this forum. If not, you will get blocked. So, don't whine now, and try to talk like a real man, not as a coward. You guys pointing out the inequality that goes the other way, the main problem here is to actually start somewhere, and why not start on the side that has the most inequalities? When this actually gets results it will spread both ways because the goal is ultimate equality where it is possible. Why is it that every time someone makes up a plan to do something positive, the people answer with "Oh, but it doesn't fix..." or "Why not focus on _ instead, we need that more" why not just support things that are actually making the world a little better? To point out other problems instead of doing something about this one will only postpone the problems and disturb the communication.

    • @olvrhffmnn
      @olvrhffmnn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Why not start on the side that has the most inequalities?" Think about your sentence for a minute: You have two sides. These two sides are not equal in several areas. In some area, the inequality between these two sides will be larger, in some areas it will be smaller. But which side has "most inequalities"? None! Inequality is measured by the differences between these two sides, so whenever one side is different, the other side is different, too. Now, why have you used such a meaningless phrase with "most inequalities"? Because feminism is using a trick for confusing men. Feminism is claiming to fight for "equality", because "equality" sounds better than "female privilege". But feminism does not actually fight for equality. Feminism only and always pushes for increasing female choice at the expense of male choice, compassion for females at the expense of compassion for males, female privilege at the expense of male privilege. If feminism was really about equality, it would recognize the fact that all equalities are linked. For every area in life that shows a male advantage there is an area that shows a female advantage. And these areas are all linked. Men lose out in family law, then men have more time and energy for work, then they work more and have better careers. If you want to motivate women to work harder, you have to give men a better deal in divorce. That's just one example on how inequalities are linked. Feminism does not care about that. It only uses "equality" as a ruse to hide it's true goals. But after 100 years of feminism, men have finally understood what they are dealing with here. Some understood it from logical analysis. Some understood from seeing it's impact on society. Some have personal experience. Men know that feminism is bullshitting them. That's why men don't accept this "start on the side that has the most inequalities" any more. It was a trick from the start, it is hiding a political agenda hostile towards men and it does not offer any advantage to society. And anybody promoting this flawed ideology has to be called out for the bullshit they are promoting.

      The real pay gap in the west is about 8%. Men earn about 8% more than women usually but this also is leaving out many other factors.
      You know what's really crazy? Men pay about 70% of tax and of taxes spent on programs that are gender specific women receive more than 70% of that funding. Women also vote far far more and in far larger numbers than men... so most of all of this is mostly voted for by women.
      Women being oppressed in the west is laughable.

    • @olvrhffmnn
      @olvrhffmnn 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, you are asking me what I would do if I could turn back the clock? In short, I would deliver every female right with a female duty. Which is how life works for men also. For the right to vote, women also get the duty to serve in the military. For equal pay in their jobs, women also get equal financial responsibilities after a divorce. For the right to have free choice on their life-work-balance in a marriage (including having their own bank account etc), women also get the duty to finance their own life inside and after a marriage. What men are finally fed up with is the kind of feminist cherry-picking where women get all the rights and men get all the responsibility. There is enough legal female privilege already. Men (and a lot of women!) won't accept more of this female privilege bullshit masquerading as "equality".

    • @joannot6706
      @joannot6706 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You think you figured it out don't you? ;) Yes you almost did figured it out! This is what equality looks like and this is what feminist want! Woman also had duty in time of war for instance and that was empowering! If they couldn't serve their country with a military career it's because it was prohibited by men, you think women didn't wanted to be a war hero or a graded officer? Woman want all of this as much as men, women want more of this equality. You think they just want to have the "good stuff", But before being able to have equal financial responsibility, there need to be equal pay. You see today, when someone needs to sacrifice a career in couple, most of the time it's the woman, why? How? Doesn't matter it's a fact. Do you think it's fair to have equal responsibility in this state of male dominance of the work force today ? (I'm not making that up just look at the video if you don't believe me) Do you think it's fair to treat women like men after a divorce while they don't have the same opportunities? No it's not fair. But it will be fair when women will be just as valued as men.
      So start your war on feminism the day we have equality and women try to avoid the same duties men have. Alright ?

    • @joannot6706

    *Googles Sandi Toksvig* (The last phrases sum up her life)
    Women's Equality Party*
    She is joint founder of the Women's Equality Party (established in March 2015), was installed as Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth in October 2012, and is the current president of the Women of the Year Lunch.
    In April 2015, Toksvig chaired the first, informal, conference of a new political party, the Women's Equality Party, and she subsequently left her job as presenter of The News Quiz to become co-founder of the party. She later explained that she had decided that it was "not too late to fight the good fight, after all". In September the same year she announced the dates for a comedy tour to raise funds for the party. The party's full set of policies were launched at Conway Hall, 20 October 2015.
    Toksvig is mother to two daughters and a son. The children were carried by her then-partner, Peta Stewart, from whom she separated in 1997.
    She lives on a houseboat in Wandsworth with psychotherapist Debbie Toksvig, whom she joined in a civil partnership in 2007.

    The comments below are very disheartening and smells of ignorance, sexism and selfishness...Why are people so anti gender equality ?? a simple fair concept..Why do people think women always deserve less ??

      Women have equality what she is asking for is forced outcomes based on genital composition.

    Will TED ever have a male activist talking to a mostly male audience about men's inequality of outcomes and giving a partisan political speech with a call to action speech? No because that would be misogynistic. But different standards apply to women as this video clearly demonstrates.

    I can't believe the dislikes outweigh the likes. I can't believe men are scared of equality. Feminism isn't about making women more powerful than men. Feminism is about equality of women and men. It's not about the prevalence of women. Stop being scared of it. Support it if you love your mothers, daughters, sisters and female friends. Equality is good for everyone. I can't believe some women think this is bullsh*t. We really do live in backwards times. I fear for our children.

    Skipped around just to see whether she would repeat the lie that women are paid less for the same work and I wasn't disappointed. Of course she doesn't elaborate on the REASONS for the gap in total earnings between genders (hours worked, difference in professions etc.).
    These ideologues are clearly going for the "If you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it." approach. I pray people won't fall for it.

      @markphc99 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She didn't say that women are paid less than men for the same work , she just said that women are paid less than men. Disappointingly, she didn't discuss the valid reasons you mentioned.

    • @Satsujinhan
      @Satsujinhan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The comment about women working "for free" from early November to end of December clearly implies that those women are doing the same work as their male colleagues but are just paid less because they're women.

      Could You elaborate on data to support your claim about the REASONS . Is there any research that takes those reasons into account. It's not enough to come up with a statement that makes sense. You also have to prove it.

    • @olvrhffmnn
      @olvrhffmnn 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The primary reasons for income inequality are the dating preferences of women and family law. Men make more money, because they are expected to pay more. Force women to pay their own bills and they will start to work harder, work in unpleasant and dangerous jobs and then they will also make more money.

    Fun fact: Women naturally gravitate towards lower paying jobs, since they generally favor empaphatic work over technical work and often have a stronger interest in starting families. This distinction is getting painfully clear in coutries where equal opportunity actually exists, like Norway. Now, if you set up a politicized culture that basically pushes women through higher education and into high paying jobs, in an attempt to achieve inter-gender equality, you actually work towards increasing the gap between high and low income workers. Why, you ask? I tell you. While men readily marry women with lower socio-economic standing, women only marry across their peers and up. A male doctor will marry a female nurse, but no female doctor will marry a male nurse. So, the more women are among the top, lets say 25 percentile, the less socio-economic movement happens between the top 25% and the bottom 75%. Borders between socio-economic classes will harden accordingly. It is also noteworthy that males and females played different roles since there is gender. You can go a few dozen million years back for the root of that. Through our entire evolutionary history, since long before there even _were_ humans, males and females were selected for different attributes. What is it called when an ideology tries to push an agenda that completely ignores reality in favor of some magical fantasy world and does a shitload of damage to our social structure in the process? Ah, I remember: Fucking retarded.

      I don't agree with that. Stalemate is what we had in Parliament, before Boris Johnson & his side-kick, Domenic Cummings, did whatever they had to do, to get the Democratic will of the people in favour of Brexit respected.

    I love how she says no women wanted the job for the UN job and then the very next sentence says representation for women blah blah blah. Um you know why no one wanted it, because they didn't want it. Women and men are different THEY LIKE TO DO DIFFERENT THINGS more men are ceos because that's what they like to do and work hard for it. More women are teachers and nurses so where's the inequality speech for that?
