Fashion Critic Reacts to the "About Time" MET Gala Exhibit

- The Metropolitan Museum of Art was definitely affected by Coronavirus, like just about everyone and everything in 2020, but luckily the exhibit that was supposed to be celebrated by the 2020 MET Gala, "About Time: Fashion & Duration" was debuted in a limited capacity! And I was fortunate enough to be able to get to see it in real life, obviously social distancing and taking the proper precautions! But I wanted to do a video reacting to the Costume Institute Curator, Andrew Bolton's, Tour. Just cause we didn't get to have a fun red carpet for the MET Gala doesn't mean the exhibit behind the Gala shouldn't be discussed! The exhibit essentially looks at how certain styles and trends come and go within fashion and how the idea of fashion is pretty cyclical! I recommend people actually go and see the exhibit in real life if they can, but if they can't I hope this video brings a bit of a better insight! With famed looks from designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Comme des Garçons, Iris Van Herpen, Off-White, Charles James, Marc Jacobs, Raf Simons, Vivienne Westwood, Louis Vuitton, & Christian Dior just to name a few!

It would be interesting if you do a beginner's guide into fashon - where to start, how you got into fashion & what one must know.
Love that idea!
I love this idea too!
yessss i dont know where to start
YASSSS
He has a video from a few years ago called “so you wanna get into the fashion industry” you can definitely search for it and watch it does a good job on what and where to look for info
Am I the only one who thinks about what you would wear to the MET Gala every year, lol.
@Калина Захаринова Yes, lol❤❤❤
Yes totally. Like this year, I know it is older so maybe not fashionable enough, but I would have worn that Iris Van Herpen dress that moved at the same speed as the human eye, so it looked like it just shook and you had to slow it down to see the real movement. TIME, get it? What would have been yours?
@@mnels5214 Definitely a Dior new look dress with a dramatic wide skirt covered in flowers with opera gloves and a pump! Nothing compared to a Iris Van Herpen dress, lol😂
Nooo , every single year I chose my red carpet look while I wear my pijamas
@@gabrielribeiro-rm2to Literally SAME
I would DIE to wear baroque seventeenth century French court dress every day. It is so beautiful.
I have one made just for me by my friend at college, cuz she needed a model.
Mid to late 18th century fashion was peak
I would looooove to make a coat in an 18th century cut with a more modern tailoring fabric.
Omg yes!!!
When he’s talking about whether fashion is an art. I’ve got to say it definitely is. I just think about that scene in The Devil Wears Prada, when the Nigel character says to the Andrea character:
“Halston, Lagerfeld, de la Renta. And what they did, what they created was greater than art because you live your life in it. Well, not you, obviously, but some people.”
And I feel that. It’s art. It’s that.
Yes they created some of the most iconic looks as well as other designers and while we may never wear them we see imagines of them wearing it still a symbol of art fashion and muse. We even wear things inspired by their styles so in many ways fashion has always been art you can wear and admire just like pasties and cakes have been art you can eat
💯
Luke, PLEASE react to old award shows. Like Oscars 1993 or something. I would love it!
This is such a great idea! Yes, please!! 👏👏
Yes please!!!
Black is so hard to see the cuts, fabric, I wish they had selected another color
I think it need better lighting/camera work. Something my photographer friend told me, is treat fabric like skin/living thing. They all have different needs, that’ll make them shine.
fair, but black is also p versatile i guess
black is meant for you to focus on the silhouette, its cuts and details are the mystery.
I totally agree; I’m positive the Met’s actual lighting (NOT captured on video) made for in-person viewing much better!! Easier on the eye- ✅
Not only COULD you absolutely work with the Met this year on doing an in-depth personal tour for your channel, if there was the 'main' event you should be interview attendees (as you'll be one soon enough in the future 😉). Liza Koshy style but actually good and backed with actual fashion knowledge (no shade to her tho). You've been featured in Teen Vogue, WWD, Paper Mag, BOF, countless french journals and articles, it IS absolutely your time to be asking A lister's who they're wearing, why, what inspired them etc. As a fashion media student, Luke I'd absolutely love to help you get these incredibly deserving opportunities.❤️also, imagine a year or two of interviews and debriefs on red carpets, only to be on those red carpets the subsequent years??? I mean its going to happen anyways, let me help you ;)
omg youre so kind! i also hope he gets opportunities like that
I love the usage of the term “craft” for fashion, it really fits. Idk how to articulate why I love that so much, but it’s so perfect :))
in the words of Nigel from Devil wears Prada "fashion is greater than art, because you live your life in it"
👏🏼👏🏼💗
you should make a list of book you recommend about fashion history (i'm more interested on how it's get made rather than shenanigans between designers, but everyone has their tastes)
This is really random but it would be so cool if you did fashion history of different countries...
Would love to see you do some more fashion history videos, love those aspects, thank you for keeping us educated 💫
I'm fully obsessed with the Alaïa dress. I hope I dream about it when I fall asleep, because it's the only way I'll ever come close to it.
Oh my, oh my! The parachute shirt is in the exhibit! Johnny Rotten (and the other Pistols) wore it A LOT in the late 70's!!!! A Westwood classic! Thanks a lot for this video!!!!!!
PLEASE make a video about Johnny Rotten's style in the 1970s!!! that guy was waaaay ahead of his time!
You have to talk about Alexander Wang like NOW it’s very very important to spread awareness about this
He'll get away with it, cos he's gay, Asian and his victims were men. The fashion world/Hollywood/woke media don't care. Kevin Spacey was cancelled cos it was right after Harvey got exposed ( after decades of assaulting women ) and the left was desperately virtue signaling. WW 1984 has a rape scene of a man and the mainstream media ( woke ) is not saying anything. Alexander Wang will be fine. I wonder if Luke who cancelled D&G cos their not woke enough will say anything about Wang.
What happened??
@@sabrina1646 Several male models have accused him of drugging them with Molly water and sexually molesting them.
@@cheong728 oh no 🤢
@@cheong728 Damn I literally had no idea until you said so. Wtf, that's disgusting.
Also Luke what happened to the iconic HauteLeMode intro song
Same. It’s kind of iconic in my head.
right? this one is nice but is just chill...the other one was fashion
@@aesthral really? I find the new one more sophisticated and fashionable
My best guess is that Hautelemode probably just wanted something to mark it’s growth and change, so why not a new intro sound. I personally like it.
Knew something was off but I couldn't put my finger on it! Also, I too want that skinny mask
Fashion definitely IS art. A beautiful painting makes you feel emotions; elevates or saddens you maybe. Beautiful garments do the same..but hopefully with sequins!! Bless you Luke xx
if only Harry Styles wasn't with Gucci, that Nicholas Ghesquiere for Louis Vuitton ensemble (paired with the Morin Blossier riding jacket) would be PERFECT on him
the best thing about fashion analysis is when you can see similarities in design and inspiration. this whole thing was a 10/10 👏🏾
Thank you for sharing this video. I have wanted to go to the MET for so long and these videos help me feel a lot better about not being there. Also thank you for empasizing the importance of fashion history and the ICONIC garments.
Ugh. Just when my chronic depression and procrastination *screamed* for another Haute Le Mode upload. 😓
I got the book back in June. I loved that it provided corquis for hows some of the garments are built and created.
Could you please talk about what's been happening with Alexander Wang. I feel like people need to be talking about this ://

A VIDEO ABOUT JOHN GALLIANOS TIME IN DIOR
my favourite designer at my previous favourite house! (not my favourite anymore as Maria has changed it for the worse, for the sheep of the world)
There's a great book called 'gods and kings' can't remember the author but it covers Galliano's career alongisde Alexander McQueen 's x
Well done. This might be one of your best videos. It’s interesting to watch the evolution of your videos. You’re able to speak about clothing completely differently than in the beginning of your work. Really well done!
People were really saying crap about you not having airpods people really? Damn people need to stop this..
I mean to be honest my niece when she was in ninth grade had the newest Samsung Galaxy phone and kids at her school would bully her because she didn't have an iPhone I was like are you kidding me and then I thought yeah that actually makes sense because I've heard this girl say before that she met this really good looking guy and he was funny and sweet and she really hit it off with him but she had to turn him down because when she gave him her phone number she realized when he texted her that he had an Android and she just could not get past that" and I was like wow it's your that shallow of a person gross man..
Sorry I know this has nothing to do with your video great video btw
i know,, it’s just a barrier between people.. and unnecessary 💜
Fashion like interior design are for me Applied Arts, and when the application/use is in the context of capitalism, of course a mayor part of it is also product production. But just like artisanal stuff can coexist with mass products, I would also say Art in fashion can also be achived everytime a Creator makes something in a non-alienated way.
virgil abloh is totally product production
I don't remember the last time I saw him not wearing peter do
literally
I also want to be a Peter Do ambassador
Finally, I almost read a book.
this is why i subscribed. i love you omg.
Luke! Please give us your 2021 luxury and affordable bag recommendations!
cool exhibition! full of delights! love that luke does pronounces the name of iris van herpen and rudi gernreich in the way how they are originally called and not the English version of it.
i honestly thought this exhibit was genius in its own way and that andrew bolton just knows how to do it right, whether it’s by pairing startlingly obvious pieces together, or more nuanced ones. as a fashion history nerd it was so fun to be able to see two timelines with such iconic dresses by iconic designers, that not only highlighted their aesthetic qualities, but also their context as you mentioned, which is so so important when talking about fashion!! i literally can’t wait for this years met gala (hopefully we get one!!😬)
Omg!! I would LIVE to see you at the Met! Interviewing people and asking them about their clothes?! Yes, I would live 🤞🏽☺️
our king serving us content! WE STAN 😤😤😤😤
I am so glad you uploaded this, Luke. Ur the best!!
Bolton's tiny mask actually reminds me of the time I threw on one of my 6 year old's masks by accident. But he's working it.
I wish you do a book recommendation video!!! Talk about your favs and the books you learned the most from :)
I was lucky enough to see the show at the Met and making connections between the different garments gave me a weird sense of comfort. We live in times of upheaval and uncertainty; it only makes sense that we would look to the past in our art and fashion to find some sense of stability. We want to wear clothes that not only have meaning and history, but will endure for the (chaotic) years to come.
I think it's really interesting that younger people and the fashion industry have pushed things like sustainability, repurposing old fabrics, and bringing back trends that evoke styles from centuries ago. In a way, the idea of clothes being timeless and transcending centuries has become a trend itself. It's not as if people weren't referencing the past and thrifting 10-20 years ago, it just feels more prominent now in our collective consciousness. And it's strange to think of sustainability and timelessness as a "trend" because trends are supposed to be temporary.
"Lowkey a bich...in the most loving way." The way I want people to describe me when I'm gone
It would be cool if you did reviews of runways from the 80's 90's 00's . Then you can add how deeply a certain trend inpacted the fashion culture of that time . You can also do iconic fashion pieces that had a widespread effect on fashion from the 60's and 70's.
THANK YOU 11:59 Please do a video on Halston. I am a fashion graduate and I had never heard of him until I bumped into a fantastic documentary here on youtube. Mind blown. I was super confused how he was almost forgotten or even erased from popular fashion knowledge. Also netflix is making a whole series about him.
As a fashion newbie, I agree that context would be appreciated. Accessibility is important and people should be able to appreciate the exhibit to the fullest extent without being fashion experts
I know nothing about fashion but the short dress with the zipper wrapping around it is KILLING me
The exhibit and the explanation is really beautiful and the message in within has so much food for thought and intelligence about the history contexts and different ways of presenting fashion and its future! After seeing this video I'm kinda glad they did not do the MET ball last year, because I can see a lot of celebrities getting it wrong and in the end would be just a waste of time and fabric what would actually be opposite of the theme.
So excited about this video! I was so sad I didn’t get to visit NY and see this exhibit in person, but I got the exhibit book guide which is great!
love to see how passionate you are about fashion. thank you for this video
The information that you would have liked to see during the exhibition you will possibly find it in a book that museums usually produce for each temporary exhibition and that you can buy in the museum's own store that collects the information of the exhibition in addition to detailed and quality photographs of the pieces.
I think that the reason why they did not include plaques diving into detail of the comparison is that it was assumed most would watch this video? There giving it a more shared experience of the audience bc the ones at home truly can see just as much as being there. Loved the video keep up the great work
The Sarah Burton for McQueen and the 2003 Alaïa live rent-free in my mind. They're incredibly gorgeous!
That was fucking riveting. Watched it twice. Luc, your fashion knowledge is dazzling to behold.
I love the Elsa Schiaparelli jacket, the Alia zipper dress, and of course the Iris van Herpen and Charles James dresses 🙌🏻🙌🏻
It was like I was walking the exhibit with you lol I love this!
Yeeeeesss Luke! Please do a history video on Halston ! I cant wait for your take on it. Love you and your content as always ❤
Liz Hurley wore that safety pin dress in 1994. I had to google it coz I remember it being in celeb gossip magazines when I was a kid. I was like that can't have been in the 80's?! I was a baby
am i the only one who seen an electric automatic screwdriver in the fireplace glass reflection?
I appreciate that Bolton went and re-curated this exhibit with a focus on black designers. I read this quote from him on the decision "I wasn't thinking about race, ethnicity, gender, or sexuality. I was really looking at it purely aesthetically. Black Lives Matter made me realize it can't not be. When you work on any show going forward, it has to be part of your intellectual framework. It has benefitted the show tremendously."
Looking good Luke
I am so in love with that Nicolas Ghesquiere waistcoat and the riding jacket 😍😭
THANK YOU for being anti-colonialism in fashion! It's so refreshing to hear that and it made my year
8:45 lady Gaga wore that Gound for her first perfume launch
I told my friend in New York he has to go see the exhibit so I can live through him vicariously
omg u should react to rupauls drag race! there’s some great fashion on the show.
The white Charles James dress murdered me as soon as I saw it
The first letter of Iris with the Iris van herpen name is actually pronounced like the e in be. Nice vid
This has nothing to do with the video but Peter Do has become my all-time favorite designer now because of this channel
Best thing to do is bring opera glasses to museums. You can really get into the detail without being in anyones way.
I see you, Peter Do hoodie!!
Edit: I just checked out Peter his webstore and you have more of his clothing. Your grey and black turtle sweaters were nice to see. Now I know where you got them.
so i assume the 2021 met gala (if fashioning) will have a different theme? that makes me sad lol, I would've loved all the different dresses from different time periods
HERE SECOND YASSS but fr these are so beautiful ❤️❤️ but so are you!
Still waiting for your new Closet Fashion Archive vid! ✨
Liz Hurley wore the safety pin dress in 1994. She wasn't famous at the time and got turned down by other fashion houses, this was the last dress left at Versace press office when she called them. And of course all anyone remembers from the Four Weddings premier is Hurley in that dress.
Oh wow, I didn't know the whole exhibition is just postponed, so happy that I will not miss out on this year's. Luke, thanks for the info.
Since the world recently lost this bright star in the world of haute couture, can you in the near future make a video on the life and history of Pierre Cardin?
Thank you for another great video I really enjoyedit! It was very interesting and informative! I love the white dress by Charles James and I think it would make such a beautiful wedding gown or an opera singer's gown!💝💖💗💓💕
I live vicariously through your peter do clothes
I can’t wait until I can go into a Museum again, but these in-depth digital media, make it super accessible. Would helped me in my art history classes in college a lot too.
Both of those spiral zipper dresses were probably inspired by an 1892 Worth tea gown, where the closures are sets of hooks and bars that spiral around the bodice
honestly from what you are saying I think if there was an explanation on these pieces I think there would be a greater appreciation. I like fashion but its when I watch people who are into fashion and they explain the cuts, fabrics, etc. is when I appreciate fashion and get a little bit smarter in why I pick clothes. I think if the met was able to share that knowledge base more you will have more people understanding why clothes cost the way it does and help with the decrease of fast fashion. Also low key I know they will NEVER do this, but I wish we can have real people modeling these clothes. Movement and how it looks on the body is so important! sigh. Shame Iris ..clothes look the best when in motion.
I wish they’d showcased a regency era dress with the Chanel & the off white
My favorite will be the Iris Van Herpen piece. The skirt got me.
The Dior bar suit is from the 1947 New Look collection. Early 40s silhouettes were much narrower due to war-time rationing. Shaking my vintage-loving head lol.
as always, your taste is IMPECCABLE
I think it’s interesting to use the word Craft as it is its own complete area of research and academia. I would like to hear you speak more on this as the term has been overused to sell things such as “craft beer”
Love this! Can you do a video on the looks in HBOs “We Are Who We Are”? Kinda different for you but I’m super interested in what you think
I dreamt that you approved of a giant pink and orange Valentino hat I had and we danced at a dinner party. 😂😭 The high point of this weird day.
If I could just give you a tip for your earbud situation, it would be greatly improved if you just bought a 3.5mm jack extension cord. It would keep the cord from tugging and you can also wear them with the cord behind your neck and back. I love your videos and I've always wanted to suggest that!
I have a friend who made me a 1750 french court suits.....feeling amazing every time I wear it....💗
I think the take that fashion straddles the line between art and product is interesting. Because there are some pieces, like that fabulous IVH dress, I consider more to be art. It's basically a wearable sculpture. But yet the dress it was right next to, I would consider that a product. You can see the similarities but yet one screams art, and one screams product.
Luke, honest to god this is a Chef’s Kiss 💋
I am guessing their is no personal audio tour devices because of covid? There is a wealth of knowledge here that would be beneficial to listen to during the tour.
I wanna talk to you Dear

I’m just starting to get into fashion history. Would anyone recommend any books worth buying? I’ve already learnt so much from this channel but ya gal is a sucker for details.
you should do a video on how you've learned all this history! maybe book recommendations, movies, documentaries?
omg not me waiting for this video the whole day bc of my time zone .... anyways very happy now
Idea: You should reach out to the MET to see if you could host a private tour with your subscribers for next year's big fashion exhibition. We could have our own little MET gala. 🙂
Wow, that was very interesting. Sounds like a day trip to the city in the middle of a pandemic? Hummm I don't know Thx for the video, super impressed. A+ One of my favorites from you. Happy New Yew
With the two suits (Margiela and Bertha Lewry) the point was to show different ways men’s suits have been interpreted into women’s suits over time. I think it says a lot about how our attitude towards women’s clothing has changed. The first suit is very fitted and emphasizes the wearer’s hourglass shape while the Margiela jacket is boxy and loose it goes for more of a “cool” look than sexy by emphasizing the figure
“Sarah Burton has done it again” kevin kwan... i agree that dress was beautiful 😍
Can you please review old award shows? That would be awesome!!
Is there a video where Luke discusses concepts ideas/intro for the casual or haute couture illiterate?
