I work at the network rail carstairs depot, those sleeper trains truly are beautiful, west coast mainline was probably shut because we were working on it 😂
In the late 1960's I travelled north from Euston many times on the overnight sleeper, so had a great feeling of nostalgia as you walked along the platform beside the sleeper carriages. It was pretty basic in those days, and I was interested to see the inside of the modern cabins, with shower, toilet and amenity kit. Pillow spray was a great idea, and your breakfast looked great. Thank you for another interesting trip.
Now you need to do the Highlander service on the other way round from Fort William to Euston. The route is spectacular but you should do it in mid summer or the route is in entire darkness.
Rocky's Trains Hopefully once Caledonian Sleeper fix all the issues they’re having. The Fort William - Euston service broke down in the highlands the other day.
@@rockystrains8891 wow I took a train to Mallaig last year and only remember Corrour as being the most remote train station I'd ever seen...that must've been terrifying
Might be slower and a tad more expensive. But sure is a relaxing and stress free way to travel the country. Nice review. You should do a review of similar train travel to / in Russia as it is also interesting and i remember meeting some great people. Also fun when the lift up the train to change the wheels at Polish border because of different gauge size.
Nice review of the new train! I rode this line back in 2011 to Glasgow--looks like lots of amenities on the new train! Either way, this train beats an airplane any day!! Love train travel, thanks for the share and the tips. 🙏🏻
Really enjoyed this. I've never traveled by train , but these vlogs are so interesting, I'm going to plan a trip somewhere in the US. I don't think it will be as inexpensive here as it is there! Thank you for sharing. Great job!!
my dad was part of the project to build the fourth bridges and every time we go to Scotland we drive across it and its always so beautiful u can see the 3 lights at the top when its dark and its pretty cool
The State Hospital at Carstairs? Isn't that where Serco Group plc's managers responsible for the Caledonian Sleeper trains either come from, or end up?
Good review 👍 The Caledonian Sleeper uses Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queen Street. As the highlander service from Euston to Fort William stops at Queen Street low level.
Great video. Thanks a lot. We took the old Caledonian Sleeper from London to Inverness last year and honestly it was one of the highlights of my life. The new trains look more comfortable and luxurious but the old ones were fine. I hope to do it again sometime. Curious about the double compartment available but can't seem to find much on the Sleeper site. Thanks again. Very enjoyable and informative.
Highly recommended this We took our whole family 2 adults 4 children. We have been all over the world with them this is still something they talk about Nice little review Thanks for sharing Very highly recommended
I took this train from Glasgow to London this Summer and loved it! Even though the shower was sort of not so warm. I treated myself and booked the double bed room since I'm very tall, and it was a bit shaky but I just loved NOT having to deal with Airport hassles (as you said) as well as someone bringing me a bacon butty at 6:30AM. Fun video!!
Great vlog as always! I need to travel by train more often. All I have is time. I am a sink. For Norway and the Covid-19 everyone has to holiday within the country this summer, so it will by train, car or sea. Be safe, and stay safe my friend!
understanding why the long stops happened, for an American, the idea of a train being ahead of schedule (shed ju wul) is mind-bending. if train riders were informed we had stopped at Joliet b/c we were running an hour early, there would be mass panic. great video. (I had a better experience with the shower/bathroom years ago. ended up taking two showers from Chicago to Washington d.c.)
You should do a 7 day 1st Class All Line rover, At 796 for 7 days its a steal, less than a lot of business class flights, for this you get food, cooked breakfast, drinks, alcohol, any First Class lounge, if you use sleepers have pay supplement, any traveler or rail enthusiast should do a 7 day 1st class ALR, I’m doing on starting tomorrow Sunday 29th September, done them before too, always great so fully recommend, great way to see the UK rail network, make for a great vlog and reviews of many different First class journeys, from hot dishes, cooked breakfast to just coffee etc and a biscuit etc,.
I went to London on the sleeper in May from Edinburgh to London and i thought it was worse than the old stock, the shower is a good idea but having the water tank in the roof is not I spent most of the night listening to the water sloshing around this was my fifth time travelling on the sleeper don’t think I’d do it again this is my own personal opinion
Living in Switzerland, I almost regret that our country is too small to have a sleeper train. It would be grand to be able to travel within your own country on a sleeper train.
Funny how I remember the last time I took a sleeper train in the 70's and then see one today! Is it me or at they more cramped? It was in Fort William and I just used a sleeper car, thinking in my ignorance it was included in the ticket to Glasgow! It was run by British Rail .No one stopped me and I had an incredible nights sleep.
It was nice to see the train service.....I do like the first class service on trains...To have to private space and first class service by a nice guy and or lady is really good...
Carstairs is where the State Hospital is ( Secure Psycatric Hospital) Crosscountry, Avanti and Scotrail trains slow down fully to roughly 15mph due to how close the State Hospital is and for the risk of a patient escaping being on the tracks which is thankfully rare.
Great video...... I would have been looking at the beautiful views out of the window too. Good point about waiting around in airports. I used go to Paris every month for work and once Eurostar opened that was always my preferred choice rather than fly.
Nice trip report certainly the best way to go from London to Scotland I hope all the teething problems with the new carraiges have been sorted out and I wish the UK had more than just 2 sleeper train services I would like to try this out someday as I've never been on a sleeper train before (or even gone this far away from London) I want to see what the experience is like
I’ve very recently become hooked on your channel and am binge watching. However trains have always been my first love and so this was right up my street. Thanks Noel. Ps the accompanying music was perfect for the journey.
What an incredible journey! I've been to England a few times (as far north as Lancashire) and it has always felt like a second home to me. I have never been to Scotland, but I am a scotch fanatic. I must say though, £6.70 for a dram of Laphroaig 10? £6.70 = $8.75 USD right now, which is a fantastic deal compared to what I pay in bars here in Southern California for the same thing... $13-15 for 50mL! I am adding this train ride to my plans for my bucket-list trip to Scotland. Slàinte!
Nice video. I'm waiting for the new Caledonian Sleeper carriages to go to Inverness. Here's a video tip. Set your gopro to video format "PAL" to reduce flicker. Then change frames per second to "50 fps" to make the videos even smoother. Then change field of view from "wide" to "linear" to reduce the fish eye effect. "Linear" mode only works at 1080p or 2.7K, not with 4K. Filming with 4K consumes a lot of battery and needs a pretty fast MAC or PC to edit.
New subscriber, been watching loads of the plane videos, was surprised to see my town Motherwell. My new favourite TH-cam channel the videos are great.
If you want to get the train from London to Scotland, I’d personally go in the daytime on LNER (to Edinburgh) or Virgin (to Glasgow). Regular services also, which is good, especially with the nightmare the new sleeper trains have been in terms of reliability. It’s only about 4.5 hours with food & drink complimentary in first class. Booking in advance it’s fairly cheap too. Then catch onward connections to the Highlands.
@@johsa2162 sorry for the confusion. Like you, I have never been to Scotland! I would love to go however. I'm free in August if you'd like to arrange something haha
I know you probably won’t read this, Noel, but is there a chance that you could disclose the full list of the music used in this video? I especially love the piece of music upon arriving into the Scotland; it used bagpipes and female vocals.
You take the high road and I'll take the low road and I'll be in Scotland before, oh sorry I got carried away. That room had such a small window and for such a short distance I would take a day train for the scenery.
Nice *Looking* trains... So far they are not nice at all. Brand new, only a few months in service and FULL of snags. Constant power failures and broken equipment. Not great for many passengers. Hopefully just teething snags that can be sorted!

Lovely video. Also, seeing that Laphroaig 10 at 3:20 with ice made me a tad sad :) Ice in single malt scotch is one of the world’s most contentious issues but adding ice is going to dilute the flavours if you ask me. The best way to drink whisky will always be neat.
thanks for this vid. I just took the Caldonian Sleeper from Waverly to Euston in May. Only thing I'll do differently next time is skip onboard meals. the food was really good; but making time to eat can quickly cut sleep time down so you feel a little tired the next day. still, ensuite shower on a train was a pretty cool experience ;)
Thanks again for another great video Noel! Informative and interesting as always thanks again and Hope your fam is well also 🙌 ps how many people turned up when you got the night light confused 😝 we have all done it!

I like automobiles too ;)
