What are Generic medicines and Branded Medicines, Why branded medicines are costly, How to purchase generic medicines and where to purchase them? Jan Aushadi or Makkal Marunthagam are the central government Generic medicines shops where we can get quality medicines at low cost. This video explains about them in Tamil.
All the medicines we buy has two names. First is the Generic name-It is the name of the active ingredient in the medicine. It is also the Standard name. Second is the Brand name. It is the unique name given by the pharmaceutical companies for each medicines and they advertise it in the brand name. Are there any differences between generic and branded medicines? Actually NO. Almost 99% they are same. The active molecules present, dosage, mode of intake, side effect etc are same. Only the fillers added in the medicines which give color and taste may vary. Otherwise branded and generic medicines are the same.
However, the cost of branded medicines is 30-90% costlier than generic medicines. Usually, pharmaceuticals companies invest crores of rupees when they discover a new drug and finally get its patent for 20 years. During this period they decide the cost of the medicines and hence they are costly. After the patent period of 20 years compulsorily the pharmaceutical companies should release their drug production formula publicly. Using this other companies manufacture the same drug at low cost. They are generic medicines.
Government of India introduced “Pradhan Mandri Bharathiya Jan Aushadi Scheme” through which 4100 Jan aushadi medical shops were opened throughout India where we can get quality medicines at an affordable cost. Janaushadi sugam is the mobile app.
