I went to Turkey for many years. Turks love their soldiers very much. In fact, I think the military profession is considered the most sacred and honorable profession in Turkey. When they talk about their country, it's like they're talking about a living being. I don't know if they are too much under the influence of politics or because they are a warrior society for thousands of years, as they say; As a society, they evaluate the events in the world differently. His relations with Nato, his thoughts about the EU and the USA, his thoughts about the Russia-Ukraine war, his thoughts about the events in Syria, Iraq and Iran all revolve around a fiction. And almost all of them know and talk about these things. I asked a Turkish friend of mine, "Don't you think it's an exaggeration that ordinary people care so much about these events?" He told me, "We are right in the middle of the ring of fire. We have experienced many times over thousands of years what will happen to us if we sleep instead of being awake." Now the soldier here says "you won't sleep!" This immediately came to my mind when I watched the command :)

Hello Luke, As a Turkish Veteran (I served for 6 years including 12 months of conscription) I might be able to answer some of your questions. Give you my view on those situations you might need some extra context. 00:20 - The movie takes place in 1993. In 1993 the PKK started a wave of armed uprising against the Turkish state. 1993 was a crucial year. It was a war zone essentially. One of the people of the higher echalons who's story starts here retired Major General Osman PAMUKOĞLU. Who was a colonel at the time and went when no General wanted to. It was a dark and bad time to live in and at the time. 01:10 The start of this scene is a painfull one but explainable. I have been unfortunately I have to add because I have seen the situation that he describes. More than once. It's heart breaking because a soul has been lost to armed conflict. You might agree with Turkeys way of life but a soul has been lost in this struggle. 07:45 about the commander and the surroundings. It 'takes place' in Hakkari but it has been filmed in Antalya. But a mountain is a mountain everywhere. Hakkari is an area with mountain summets of roughly 4000 meters. It's high, it's winter mostly, it's cold. Fog/clouds like this is natural. Regarding the Captain. He is a 3 star officer. As far life is concerned that man is in command. His word is law. And in the Turkisy Army. When the company commander speaks during the assembly. This is the stamdard of discipline expected by the men in that particular situation because everyone knows where they are. The Blue beret is the beret color of the Turkish Commando. Both the Infantry Commando and Gemdarmerie Commando shaee the blue beret. The insignia is different because the Gendarmerie is part of law while the Infantry is army. Same job, different way of usage by the Turkish state. Gendarmerie is internal. Infantry is external (mostly). Hope I was able to help if you any more questions feel free to ask. You took your time to give a honest and objective review. Let this background info help you in that.

That part of this script is one of the most influential speeches ever written in the history of war movies but also one of the smartest. The power of that speech can be seen by almost all but there is also the subtext beneath which becomes very clear especially when the commander moves to the camera and talks as if he is directly speaking to us; " IF YOU SLEEP YOU DIE!" which means so much for a Turk (and so hard to explain to a foreigner) and is much more meaningfull than the scene itself ;)
I did 15 months of military service in that area in 2005. The commander you watch stays like a baby with our commanders. We wouldn't know if they loved us or not. It sounded like torture to us. But at the end of the first conflict, we understand that all training and torture are for us, we know that they love us very much. A word is spoken to the Turkish soldiers while in training. in the war that does not shed sweat in education, it sheds blood. The movie you watch is completely real and tells a real event in the 1990s
As the Turkish nation, our soldiers have been trained with the ideals on this stage since history. For the Turkish nation, the homeland is sacred. The homeland is never abandoned unless it dies. You must hear what the Commander said to his soldiers in the continuation of that movie scene. The Turkish nation has always been a military nation. This has an effect on the geography we live in.
Not only geography my bro, 1000 years ago we were living middle asia but we were still a warrior nation. It is in the blood, no matter where we live :)
The reason why he's disciplining his men in this scene is because the outpost needed reinforcements. The captain is part of the reinforcements and he lead his men through a shortcut in order to get to the outpost faster. They were ambushed along the way and he lost some men. When they arrived at the outpost they found the soldier pulling guard duty asleep. So they crept into the outpost and got settled in without a sound hearing. That's why he tells everyone they are dead. If they weren't friendlies all of them would've been killed in their sleep.
In Turkey, mothers say to their soldier sons "'If you'll get shot from back, you're not my son!', meaning; "always face your enemy and never get caught unprepaired."
You said “How can they stay still after hearing all of that? If someone shouts at you like this it would be hard not to punch him” in Turkey our military is we proud most everyone who call themselves Turkish highly respects to the army and the soldiers it’s same in soldiers too. Everyone knows their rank and how hard to climb up the ranks so someone like that General in the movie says something like this we would never act, think or even feel the urge of punching it’s the opposite we feel shamed cause we feel like we disappointed our general or worst.. our nation. No one in their right mind would stand up against their higher ups cause we know he wants the best for our nation and for us.
10:33 This shot is amazing because at first it seems like he's talking to that guilty soldier, but he is talking to viewers the society, "The Turkish People". He's telling his soldiers that if they fall asleep they will die and then he turns to us the society and tells, if we sleep, everybody dies. It is also a reference to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's words: The sleeping nation either dies or wakes up as slave.
As a Turk, the movie Nefes: Vatan Sağolsun is about the tough struggle of the Turkish people and soldiers with the terrorist organizations that have been a trouble for them since 1978. My father was a mountain commando in Hakkari at that time. The stories are extremely real, which is why this movie is so impressive. This is really how our soldiers are trained, that's why we Turks have a concept called "army-nation". None of us are afraid of our police or soldiers; We see all of them as our own children, brothers and sisters, and we respect them very much in society. And we are very patriotic people. The statement said at 4:57 is common among the society and this is indeed the case. The scene at 10:33 was a reference to the Turkish people. The movie is really handled very professionally and realistically, which makes it an excellent military movie.
A small detail but you can see that the guy who caught asleep during sentry duty is not wearing his beret, an honor he's denied as he has disgraced his unit. Also this scene depicts brilliantly, that infantry leaders such as this captain here, need to command respect but also a lot of fear. Soldiers who fear their commanders more than the enemy are usually the ones who fight with discipline.
They are not marines dude, Blue Berets are Turkish Commandos. Blue color has special meaning and it was the color of "Ottoman Akinji" and it means "raider". They were scout and advance divisions of Ottoman Military.
After that should research "bordo bereliler" meaning "Moroon berets" special forces in Turkey. Worlds best elite troops if you want to look:) Btw mate, there is a really special bond with army and people.. Buttt thats a loooong story to tell..
Acımasızca değil, disiplini görevini öğretiyor.görevinin ne kadar kutsal ve önemli olduğunu anlatıyor, motive ediyor, Allah Türk askerimizi polisimizi korusun 🇹🇷

Blue beret is for Turkish commando soldier's beret, i have it too, i made similar speech in 2001 around same mountains that i forbid to being martyr, "if someone have to die, im the only one not you", such speechs are very ciritical, we call it "waking up process" it is for motivation, first break the defences in character and built it with stronger way, it is a long story but as a veteran i can say that the movie shows the reality much.
7:41 THANK YOU! im dissapointed no single SOUL in the comments mentioned "Mete Horozoglu' he is such an good actor! no one gives him enough credit for it. Especially for this role.. I like that u mentioned that :) his acting skills in this part really gives me goosebumps every single time I watch it. Film gerçekten alıntıdır orada ki insanlar daha önce ölen askerleri canlandırıyor (şehit) o filmin geçtiği karakol yıllar önce basıldı canlı çıkmadı ve o karakolu basanlar Amerikan silahları taşıyordu
In Turkish army the discipline and the fear from commander is so high, leave alone punching to an officer as you mentioned - looking directly to his eyes with an angry attitude is impossible...

Hey Luke, I will write in Turkish because of my lack English, please Google Translate it: 4:56 Biz Türkler böyleyiz. Yani üstü kapalı Kuzey Irak'a gidildiğini söyleyip helallik istemiş. Babamın cevabı: (Bu İngilizce) "Long live the Motherland, son. You have a brother!"
Blue is the commando color. A soldier, when called upon, introduces himself with First Name, Last Name and City. He catches a soldier sleeping on duty. This is a remote, mountain unit, ambushed multiple times. Need to watch the movie, it has some good messages (actually does not promote war).
I am a doctor, I received my training in Europe, but if they called me into the army on this day, I would be proud to respect the commander on this day the Turkish army is a proud force...

Dağlıca village of Hakkari's Yüksekova district, this film tells the story of 40 soldiers under the command of a captain who is in the commando brigade in a district in the southeast close to the Iraqi border and is assigned to guard the relay station at the 2365 meters altitude Karabal Hill. This incident happened in 1996 and is completely real.
Well, you at least understood what the actual context was at the end of the scene. He is not preparing them for attack, he is just making a reminder what will happen if they die because they were not alert.
Cheatsheet for you: Emredersiniz komutanım: At your command sir/commander! Ölürsün: You would die. Öldün: You're dead. Uyursan ölürsün: If you fell asleep, you're gonna die. "Ö" is reading like "oe" eg: Term: Törm "Ü" is like "ue" eg: Universe: Yünivörs. "Komiser" you're saying is only using for police officers, commander for soldiers. Evet komiserim: Yes, sir/commisery! hope you get it all and thanks for the reaction ^^

10:50 The message in this scene; "The Turkish Nation should not sleep." It is explained that the Turkish Nation should not sleep politically and socially.
When the commander walked toward the guilty soilder at the end, the moment he walked toward us, to the camera, actually there was a secret message to all people who watch the movie and the secret message was telling that if you dont do your job well enough, we, as a whole, are going to serve together. Basically he was calling us at the end.

this is about real life happened in Aktütün Karakolu ( Aktütün Station ) in September 12 , 1992. More than 27 soldier died in 9.5hours gun fight , they fought against more than 600 PKK terrorists.
Allright, i´ll point on something who serves as third-lieutenant for 1 year and lieutenant for 3 years in that south east area. The mountains there, are terribly high and steep and it´s so hard to find any plains or flat terrain, especially on the Iraqi border. The movie depicts the one of the harsh outpost raid/ambush happened somewhere in 90´s. Turkish army werent prepared to handle guerrilla warfare until 2013 or 2016. The outsposts were built only to prevent smuggling so they were just like a big shed. And the soldiers there were just conscripts because of compulsory military service in the army. Untrained good kids the son of farmers or workers. But i know these kids were fighting from heart like hell even those who haven't took a rifle on their hands before. PKK were political party at its beginning, but they turned into a terrorist organisation and used as a puppet by some country. Even their leader admit it that they supported by US goverment. They burned down villages, killed innocent "Kurdish" people, teachers, civil officers, unarmed soldiers... And said that they fighting for Kurdish people but i know in Turkey %90 of Kurdish people hate the PKK. I think there´s no any example of this in English history. Today, in the south-eastern region of Turkey, only well trained professional soldiers are servicing on. And modern outposts is like high-technology forts. My squad consisted of specialist sergeants, corporals, sergeants and non-commissioned officers. Never lost a man but i fell of the steep rocks and broke my leg, the only casualty. :) Thanks to Turkish arms technology, unmanned aerial vehicles scanning the whole area today and they do the job often. PKK cant even get its head out now. Turkish army is just like Prussian or German army in WW1, WW2. Officers is so intense and the soldiers should obey orders without any condition. Yes, most families believe when their son is martyred for the homeland and sees it as a great honor since the 1800´s of Ottoman eras. Homeland is everything. Thats why Turkish people are so nationalist or patriotic. These blue berets... Only mountaineering commandos wear the blue beret . Just like green berets in royal army in Britain. Thank you for react this, Luke. I prefer you to watch all movie. :)
my friend, first of all, thank you for your positive attitude towards Turkey. I leave a heart here in the peace message at the end of the video ❤. The Turkish military is always the protector of the oppressed and innocent people. I don't know if you have a video for the movie Mountain, or you should. (DAĞ 1 ve 2)
During the long marathon run while I was in the army, a friend of mine could not stand and collapsed on the ground. Upon this incident, our commander said "stand up soldier, you will not die, if you die, I will bring your coffin to your family with my hands"
thanks for the reaction, I just came by your channel randomly and really loved the words you said. and here is the answer for your question at the end: blue berets infantry commando/ranger or gendarme commando/ranger
I just want to say, the movie isn't an action movie, or isn't even have a proper story...It's just...a slice of life for a soldier unit. You need to watch it like watching documentary, otwerwise you won't like it
It's already been months so I'm not sure you'll even see this. By now maybe you've even watched the movie. But here goes. The movie is about an outpost(Karabal) that got hit in 1993, so this is based on a real story. Many attacks similar to this one has happened but we're talking about the movie so lets focus on this one. There was no script, a narration or anything like that. The director wasn't even sure how to go on with the story. But he had a general picture of what he wanted to shoot so they took some footage here and there. But he wanted the whole thing to feel authentic so the whole cast stayed together huddled in the set for a whole year. About the trailer: The commander is given a mission the hold this outpost at all cost and is asked to fortify the place against an attack. The commander and his squad gets ambushed on their way to the outpost losing one of their own. When they arrive, early in the morning, to the outpost the guard on duty is asleep. So is the whole outpost. They go in make themselves comfortable and then wake them up. This scene is right after they make it there. I've served a year in similar outpost as well (in Turkey of course) and I've got to say whatever he says here is true. But this is still movie. You don't leave a single person on watch and go to bed. And an outpost is mostly occupied by 40-50 soldiers in general. You'd have shifts for morning and night. You'd have multiple observation posts strategically placed all around to secure and observe the perimeter. Each post would have 3-4 soldiers (night shifts would have break time for soldiers to rest and drink something warm to help them keep their focus etc. Don't get me wrong it's a great movie, as close as you can portray something horrific as this. Just pointing out some stuff. And as to you, I'd say thanks for making a video like this. Well analyzed and a good reaction video!
@@KingdomOfLuke I wanna add one more thing to what Can Dogan already said. Military service is compulsory in Turkey. So I don't know the age of the cast here but probably all of them already did their 6 to 18 months of military service. The Actor who delivered the speech might have heard something similar pr deliver it himself before. : ) We have a saying in the Turkish Army: "This is not your mothers lofty arms. This is army." That is why he reminds them what would have happened back home and instead of returning their loved ones, they would die instead.
@@KingdomOfLuke I want to add sth here. The soldiers say "Emredersiniz komutanım!" which is translated as "Yes, sir!" in the video. "Emredersiniz" actually means "as you command" so they are not really saying "evet".
The context is, the soldier who was supposed to be on guard duty fell asleep, and the commander was able to enter the barracks (being transferred from another place) without anyone realizing. And now he's saying everyone's dead because that guy fell asleep. This is my favorite Turkish movie, and the only military movie which I like, because it's very realistic. No flashy patriotic propaganda, no super soldiers, just the reality of military.
I had commender like him when i was in army, Turkish commandos receive very difficult training, but I learned very good things i wish i can be there 1 more year😊 🇹🇷
This movie was taken as an excerpt from the real life story, the place where the film was shot is the Tahtalı Mountain in the Taurus mountains range in Antalya, the film was shot on a mountain that has an altitude of 2375 meters and with completely natural snow and fog. The commander in this movie is not a sergant he is a Captain, the discipline and sampling in our army is really done just like in this video. the mountain that i served on is almost same, has altitude 1940 meters and it was at the east on Iranian border
6:16 the stations in the Southeast Turkey are on very high ground. That's what makes possible for terrorists to survive out so long time until these new drone technologies figured out in Turkey. It was too hard to detect them with older technologies and was demanding high prices and genius military tactics to run over these terrorists from mountains. One of the great commanders in last half century managed to clear out 400 terrorists with 10.000 troops in a couple of day at 90s without losing any soldier but a couple of injured. But bad political failures occured and they were never cleared out completly.
By the way, In Turkish Army, Soldiers are totally in the responsibility of their commanders, so when a casualty occurs, the commander is also questioned and the situation follows them through their career... They have absolute power over their soldiers, the commanders, yet they have absolute responsibility too. That's why nobody will react to his/her commander in the Turkish Armed Forces. And although it seems that soldiers can't do anything, a real pain in the ass can easily ruin a commanders career in the army. Though stuff...
Hello, I am a Türk. The reason why Turkish soldiers and commanders behave like this is not to be afraid of death, but to continue to heaven for Islam. Remember, every Turkish child is a Turkish soldier."Ne mutlu Türküm diyene." Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

In fact, Turkish army has an exception for families who lost their sons on duty. They may choose to not send their other sons to army if they wish. But despite that almost all of the families will send them with pride. Wrap up their sons to national flag and escort them with music and prayers till their bus stop. If they die on duty then commander wrap their coffin with flag and escort it till the household. Every household who send their son in that season will froze their tracks when they see military escort and feel relief when commander not stop on front of their houses, then they will again feel sad because someone else will be devastated instead of them. Commander will then reach his destination and offer his apologies to family who already start crying knowing that they lost their son. He will said my condolences and get the reply long live the motherland. As a man who lost his uncle and one of his closest friend in army i felt that in my very soul.

Hello Luke,
As a Turkish Veteran (I served for 6 years including 12 months of conscription) I might be able to answer some of your questions.

Onlar bizi çok sevdiler de, biz o zaman bunu anlayamadık. Şu yaşımda ki bilincimle o yaşlara dönmek isterdim.
^ this.

It is a great honor for us to die for our country. They cannot destroy Turkey because they cannot destroy this feeling.🇹🇷🇦🇿
Yes, that was the point here.
It's easy to miss because you need to more about knowedge the Turkish culture.
Thanks for explanation.

Thank you for the information

I want to add, the reason he walked to the camera, is because he was shouting to the Turkish people watching this movie. The Turkish patriotism lol.
this is about real life happened in Aktütün Karakolu ( Aktütün Station ) in September 12 , 1992.
:) Thanks to Turkish arms technology,
unmanned aerial vehicles scanning the whole area today and they do the job often.
Only mountaineering commandos wear the blue beret

Blue Berets in Turkish Army : COMMANDO🇹🇷
Maroon Berets in Turkish Army : Special Forces 🇹🇷
Green berets in Turkish army: bedelli (paid the price) :D
During the long marathon run while I was in the army, a friend of mine could not stand and collapsed on the ground. Upon this incident, our commander said
"stand up soldier, you will not die, if you die, I will bring your coffin to your family with my hands"
thanks for the reaction, I just came by your channel randomly and really loved the words you said. and here is the answer for your question at the end: blue berets infantry commando/ranger or gendarme commando/ranger
I just want to say, the movie isn't an action movie, or isn't even have a proper story...It's just...a slice of life for a soldier unit. You need to watch it like watching documentary, otwerwise you won't like it
This movie deserves so many awards. It shows for the first time what we our young soldiers have been through. Especially in the early 90's.
This is not a story, this is reality my friend.
The blue beret is a special uniform equipment for the Gendarmerie Commando, it has nothing to do with the special forces
Thank you for the detailed information Can it is appreciated 🙂 respect 🤜
@@KingdomOfLuke I wanna add one more thing to what Can Dogan already said. Military service is compulsory in Turkey. So I don't know the age of the cast here but probably all of them already did their 6 to 18 months of military service. The Actor who delivered the speech might have heard something similar pr deliver it himself before. : )
We have a saying in the Turkish Army: "This is not your mothers lofty arms. This is army." That is why he reminds them what would have happened back home and instead of returning their loved ones, they would die instead.

"My commissioner" is said to the cops
They say "Commander" Luke
Oh I see thank you
@@KingdomOfLuke I want to add sth here.
Götten seks
merhaba abi :D
i was in turkish army 2 year so proud my tsk and turkish nation ❤❤❤
This is exactly real life story ,i was Turkish soldier, this meeting was what we get everyday a few times ,
Commander turn the camera and he says "if u sleep, eveyone gonna die" actually its a methaphor. Director wanna say to the audience, "wake up people"
Dont say "komiserim" (for police) they said "komutanım" (for soldier)
I did my military service in the southeast for 12 months. We Turks have a military spirit. I am proud to be a Turk...🇹🇷❤️
Your ears catch the worlds nicely, man!😁
6:16 the stations in the Southeast Turkey are on very high ground.
Bütün ordularda bu böyle sadece Türk ordusunda değil. Unnecessary explanation.
@@NurKurt2706 Aynen, ama Afganistanda NATO birliği Norveç ordusunu göreydin pek öyle demezdin bence..

Emredersiniz komutanim was translated as "yes, sir". This is a true meaning translation.
If you want to know the wording translation, it is; "you shall order, my commander"

Sonra aşağıda göz gezdirirken "if you want to know the wording translation, it is; "you shall order, my commander" şeklinde yorum görünce üstü okumadan direk öyle bir yorum atmışım.

He will said my condolences and get the reply
long live the motherland.
As a man who lost his uncle and one of his closest friend in army i felt that in my very soul.
they all have to go to the army
Blue beret commando soldier. Specially trained commanders in maroon berets. If you sleep, everyone dies.
This speech is one of the thousands in Turkish Army. Turkish Commenders speak lise this everyday but this is the most beauyiful and effective one in Army History of World...
We are Turk, we are warrior, mostly commanders are like him, and we are not scared to die for our country for centuries!!!

Hey I watched this scene in the past but I forget it. I’m watching with you again and your reactions and comments are so good man 👍🏻 It’s Turkey’s soul 🇹🇷 we proud of our country and we can do everything for our country 💪🏻
Hey greetings, Turkish Land Forces blue beret means infantry captain... We Turks always respect the commander, this is a real event... Turkish soldiers, our soldiers are always disciplined.
The soldier standing with his neck bowed down is caught by the commander sleeping at the border, so he teaches them a lesson. In fact, there is no abduction ambush.
Hey Luke ! I just would like to say that, this scene doesn’t have any exaggeration. Maybe they told a few part of being Turkish soldier. And the part that the father was sayin ‘ıf ı have another son ı would send it too’ completely true. Because every Turk grow as a soldier. And protect our civils homeland is our first duty. Shortly the scene doesn’t have any exaggeration :)
are you turk or not? how you know that facts
-im turk
Pilot Kalem ım Turk too if ı wasnt ı wouldnt comment like that. Because its really hard to understand Turkish soldier’s and their parent’s psychology for non-Turks
