Thanks for the overwhelming response to this video, as well as our other videos on The Real Gunsmith Channel! We appreciate your comments and questions. Due to the volume of the comments and questions, some which would take some time to answer, we just don’t have the time to respond to them all. However many of the questions will be answered in future videos.
Our first priority is to our paying clients. Writing out long answers would take time away from that, and I won’t put them “on hold” to post long answers here.
If you have questions about getting gun work done or a custom rifle built, contact us at randyselby@randyscustomrifles.com. I have a wide range of prices for custom rifles so even the “average Joe or Josephine” can get into a custom package, just as accurate as the higher end rifles.
For our detractors, we appreciate your difference of opinion, too, but I stand by my decades of experience.
To all of you, thanks again for your overwhelming support. Stay tuned! God bless you all. Randy and Cathy

I live in Ohio. My name is Charles. I have a 45-70 HR handy rifle. Is this a good gun for deer ,Elk,bear or any other big game in the USA. I don't know the maximum range of this round. I don't think i would take over a 200 yard shot on any big game past that. I just don't practice any further and don't want wounded critters running around. I have watched several of your videos and your very wise and respectful. I hope you reply to me. Thanks ,Charles

Randy, I have been watching and loving your video's. Most recently the 7mm Rem Mag history. I reload and always see the COAL but never see anything about Ogive from load data. I have been told from several loaders that the bullet length can vary and you get more accurate and consistent loads when loading to a specific ogive. Being that you have been doing this for so long and what you say makes sooo much sense to me on so many subjects I thought I would pose these questions for your response. What I have been doing is using a Hornady precision overall length gauge. What I measure from the OAL gauge is the Ogive when I reach the rifling lands. Then start with loads using Ogive 10thousandths off the COAL and decrease in .040 increments. ie:-10, -50, -90, -130. Find the most accurate seating depth. Then perform a ladder test at that seating depth. Then make final seating depth adjustments for accuracy. Am I going about this correctly? Am I taking the best approach? Your comments would be greatly appreciated and not taken lightly. Sincerely, Erik

I was born in 63. A month after I was born my father bought a 7mm Mag. My grandfather bought one the next year. When I started hunting I chose the 7mm Mag and have been using it for over 40 years. My brother shoots a 7mm Mag. One of my nephews shoots a 7mm Mag. I don't know how many big game animals my family has taken with this round but it is in the hundreds. It does what I need a cartridge to do.

Just picked up a Winchester Extreme Weather SS in 7mm Rem mag. Far more versatility in reloading than I realized. Great round and totally agree as to the range you suggested as maximum. In reality a LOT can go wrong within 400 yards as well. I much prefer being in close. So many seem to think they are snipers instead of hunters.

I inherited a ruger m77 mk1(tang safety) in 7mm RM from my grandfather as my first rifle(it was a pretty large rifle for a 10 year old, but I learned a lot about fundamentals and recoil bracing from it). I'm now 20, have 2 AR's, a couple shotguns, and a rem 700 precision build, to this day that m77 is my favorite rifle. not only because of the deer I've killed with it, but because I can go through my mom's photo albums and see that it was my grandfather's favorite rifle as well. thank you for making this video, it was very cool to see the history of the developement of the round, and helps me understand why it is such an effective round, because it was designed by experience, not science or philosophy.

Long ago, I knew a gunsmith-gun shop owner in Tyler Texas named Bob Reynolds. About the same time as these events were transpiring, he built himself one of these rifles. According to Bob and his brother, the rifle was so spectacularly accurate, he wouldn't even blue the gun, leaving it in the "white". Also, according to him, he showed the rifle to his Remington rep. Not long afterwards Remington came out with the 700 in 7mm Mag. Obviously, being unaware of the events narrated here, Bob felt that he should have received some credit for the cartridge. Statistics being what they are, he probably wasn't alone. When I was a kid, I loved to read articles by Les Bowman in the gun/hunting publications of the era.

It hasn't been very long since I found your channel. You Sir are a true treasure of the Old Knowledge. Most of what you talk about I learned back 30+ years ago when I took a home study Gunsmithing course. I never wanted to get into the business. Guns where just a big part of my family and I wanted to be able to not understand more about them but be able to take care of them better than the average shooter. It's amazing how much of this old knowledge is not being passed down in current courses. Thank you for sharing your experience with the younger generations.

I couldn’t agree more but a 7mm has plenty energy left when out past 500 yards. It all depends who is behind the rifle! Is this person capable of making that shot? Do they have enough since to know what it takes to make that shot? This goes to say with any person at 50 yards as well. I ran across a guy that was hunting at the same lodge as I once and he had missed a whitetail deer. I asked is it sighted in? He said I had it bore sighted! Lol
This is what I think for what it is worth. I think 7mm is probably one of the best rounds out now that you can hunt deer with or even Elk. To me I have more faith in 7mm than any other. But I will say for 150 yards or less I do like my 45/70.

I was in the AF in 1977 when my first sgt. sold me a 7 mag. I'd just gotta my orders for AK. I had no idea what it was except that it was an Interarms Whitworth with only about 10 rounds shot thru it. Custom montecarlo stock and a beautiful gun.
After returning to my home in Wisconsin after my enlistment, I used it on every hunt for white tails, muleys out west and even coyotes.
My youngest son always hunted with me back in the day. He named the gun "Jerry Lee, the killa" He called it that because he could recognize the sound of my mag and whenever he went to find me after I shot, there was always a dead deer.
Just a short story of many stories I have about my "Jerry Lee" over 4 decades of hunting with it. Thanks so much for your informative video.

I am a huge believer in the 7mm Rem Mag. I’ve been hunting with one since I was a kid. I also have a 300 wby and a 338 win mag and I have never felt that I needed more than the 7mm provides for moose or elk. It shoots flat, doesn’t burn the throats out of the barrel like some of the barrel burners out there. It’s not too hard on brass and with a 154gn load with IMR4831 pushing it I am well under a MOA and can drop anything I plug with it. 243/308, 7mm Rem Mag and a 338 win Mag covers everything imaginable in North am era and the 7mm will do it all without giving up much to the others

Looks like I made the right choice , I chose arem 700 270 over 30-06 , nice flat line with a comfortable recoil , great deer and even elk rifle ... wanted a larger longer distance for larger hunting such as moose/elk , was considering a 300 , came across a Sako 7mm rem mag in closet condition for almost half its cost so I got it, same reasoning , flatter line/ comfortable recoil ...Was questioning how it would do for moose but from your comment I should be good to go .... as far as long distance I dont see me hunting much further than 400 , maybe 500 yds , heck , I dont want to walk that far lmao.... Ive also got a browning 6.5 creedmoore and a 308 gunsight scout and the ever so worthy Marlin 3030 (1969) so im should be covered for all !!!

Thank you for the video, brings back memories of my younger years and my father who passed a great rifle on to me. I grew up shooting the .276 Dubiel which was and still is a fine shooter (used reformed.275 H&H brass). It was my first and only rifle for 15 years. Many elk, deer, antelope, and coyotes fell to this rifle. I often wondered why, for years, that some version of the 7MM was not chambered as a factory round. Was happy to see Remington bring out their version of the caliber.

Thank you for sharing your great wisdom. Here in Australia, I like the W.270 ... I had a Sako Finbear set up with the varmint barrel and a custom stock. Speer 100gr and 130 BTHP were my favorite.
I set up a 7mm Remington mag for a friend many years back. Without accurate ballistics, just bench resting on the range, I sensed that the 7mm seemed about 20% up on the W.270 as far as groups at distance. I really liked it.
Here in Oz we don't have the big game that is found elsewhere on the planet, however, a lot of our small game is taken in the >300yd range.
In summer, the extreme heat haze often makes it impossible to even make out the target properly at 200yds, .... forget 500yds!
Thank you for your very honest 400yd call out. It's very refreshing to read real facts, especially on TH-cam.
Thank you for posting, and I wish you good health.

Good morning Randy. Great video, excellent information! Love my Remington’s. My main rifle is a Rem. Model 7 in .308. Started out of coarse, .303 British, way back in early 1960’s. Then moved up to Rem. 788in .308. , shoot a .300 win mag Rem 700 , just bought this fall for moose hunting! No kills yet. Bell& Carson tactical stock, mill dot night Force scope. But my main story, I just bought a used Remington 700 BDL in , get this !!!!! 7 MM Mag. From a elderly widow. Be here on Wednesday!! So excited. Will make a very good all around rifle. Antelope , mule deer down here in southern plains Saskatchewan. Thanks so much for your knowledge & info!! Short true story time! Long time ago my friend using a Rem 700 in 7 mm mag , was asking a RCMP member , that hunted with us a while back. He had been transferred way. Up to the Yukon. My friend asked him one time if he could come up and hunt the big Kodiak ? Bear. With him. He said sure, are ya still using that 7mm , he said yes! The Mountie asked him , still got that front site on said rifle, my friend said yes. Then you better take it off. Friend said why. Mountie said , cause if you just wound that big Kodiak bear, then he’s a gonna shove it up your butt!!! If and when we find ya, if your still alive, it will be easier to pull out , with that front site off!!!! Oh funny, funny humour, from Northern Saskatchewan! Thought you’d get a chuckle or to, keep up the good videos of excellent years of professional knowledge, and down to earth COMMON SENSE. Have a great day. God Bless America. Tks. From Joe Bush.

Went to buy a rifle to hunt in Wyoming many moons ago at a local gun shop. The guy said don't sell to many rifles in illinois being a shotgun only state but I might have one you might like. It was a Ruger #1 7mm rem mag. What a shooter. Love the videos.

I can tell you love both the 7mm Rem. Mag. and the story behind it. It’s hard to beat the 7mm. Ammo is cheaper than 300 win mag., has less wind drift and better trajectory than .300 win. mag. after 500 yards. I will never go with another caliber. It is a win all on any game at any size in North America. Thank you for the story.

My 13th birthday was in December and my grandpa gave me a Ruger 7mm Remington Magnum. Grandpa said he’s had it for a long time even since b4 I was even born!
Anyways dad helped me get a Vortex Viper scope for it. I have been shooting long range with it now for five months and it’s so fun and addicting! Even got two classmates into long range shooting. So far I’ve been able to hit 3 out 10 shots at 1,000 meters

It has the best ballistic coefficient and sectional density of any calibers cased in the belted 458. I also reload using Nosler 160 grain partition. I do like also your Atlas Craftsman 12” Commercial lathe in the back round which I also have. Live long and of good courage.

He had a special spot across a canyon in Idaho he shot elk from...730 yards and even he said he wouldn't stretch any beyond that distance...even with that horse of a rifle.

I'd have to agree! The 7 Rem mag is a fine cartridge for elk inside 400 yards! I hunt mainly back east in VA I do occasionally hunt in Montana. I wanted a rifle that works great on whitetails as well as elk. Oddly enough here in SW VA we have elk. The skill set for most hunters is 300 yards and in. Learning to shoot long range past 300 or 400 yards takes practice. I don't think anyone should even attempt it without training and practice. The 7 Rem mag is capable of delivering heavy bullets with high bc out to a mile. It's great for steal. I've hunted on farms where I've made 600 yard shots at deer. I've only done that twice and with success. I was in the Army as a squad designated marksman. I felt confident to take those shots. The hardest part was getting used to hard hitting and flat shooting cartridges and recoil. Knowledge of your ballistics is a must as well as knowledge of what's going on in your environment that day. You have to know how to use those variables. The 7 Rem mag's capabilities are greater than what a majority of people are capable of.

This video has so much good information and history that I was surprised at how much I really liked it. Randy's delivery of the facts and story are like combining Eistein and Mark Twain. And his straight forward talk is refreshing to say the least. Maybe do more videos about other calibers, 270 winchester or the Weatherby magnums. Maybe a video about how military rifles and calibers became good civilian combinations. Anyways, keep up the good work. There are a lot of people enjoying your videos and your decades of knowledge.

My dads sister was a hippie in the 1960s and she bought her boyfriend a brand new 7mm Remington Mag 700 BDL but they were both druggies so he pawned it and my Grandpa went and paid $150 to get it back. In 1987 I was 17 and was hunting with an old 7mm mauser that wasnt very accurate so my Grandfather gave me the 7 mag well me being young and dumb and broke I thought those 7mm mauser shells were for the 7 mag also so I put one in the barrel and pulled the trigger and nothing happened well 5 shells later i threw the whole box in the river thinking they were all duds so i was disappointed and continued to hunt with the 7mm mauser and use the other box of shells i sighted it in with and a few days later my best friend's dad John asked me how that 7 mag shot so i told him all the shells were duds and at the bottom of the river so he asked to see the gun and if i had anymore shells. Well he about whipped my ass with a belt for being so stupid and said I was lucky the gun didn't blow up in my face. John was in the military and I was probably closer to him than my real dad and he taught me a lot about hunting, fishing the birds and the bees haha. Since then I have killed quite a few deer with that gun and a couple small trees along with a few coyotes. That old gun is a tack driver still today, I can consistently group in a 2 inch circle at 300 meters. Thanks for the true history of the 7mm magnum.

I agree the 7mm Rem Mag is a great cartridge and have a Sako chambered for it . I bought mine for a proposed Colorado elk hunt. The hunt naver came to be but I've shot it a fair bit with lighter bullets as a varmiter and found it - and the Sako - more than accurate enough even with 140 gr. Noslers . Its certainly stout enough with enough leg to take just about anything on North America at reasonable hunting ranges with the proper bullet . I know I can punch through 3/4" mild steel plate at 100 yds with a 170 gr. solid .

So, 1294 ft/lbs of energy at 1000 yards (almoat 3x's a 45acp at point blank range) isn't sufficient energy to humanely drop an elk? I humbly disagree, sir. The limitations of the shooter, should not limit the cartridge.

Due to the home confinement of this period, I decided to review the long passed epasodes form you tube here... I particularly enjoy the subject matter of hunting in the western region of the states where I live. I too am a fan of Jack O'Conner from way back when! Being a spokane kid I too followed into the footsteps of the .270 win... Some 5 decade later I'm still empressed with it's caliber and legs for ranges that many other calibers fall away at distances often taken by the hunters out here. I'm a fan of the 7mm range of cartridges but still going to be shooting the .270 win until I can no longer get into the field. I'm just too set in my ways and I'm fine with that.
