  • Randy goes over a bit of progression of the 7MM and the different 7MM performances, how they relate to each other in performance and desirability for big game hunting. Are the new calibers better than the first 7MM’s?

    I use the 7mm Remington mag exclusively. It simply works. I don't shoot game at stupid distance. It groups under an inch with factory ammo. 7mm Rem mag is a good entry level elk cartridge especially if you do get lucky to hunt elk in Kentucky, Pennsylvania or Virginia. I think that's where it shines in woodland environments. Also if you are an inexperienced younger hunter and recoil from larger magnums is an issue. To me 7mm Rem mag's felt recoil isn't much more than 30-06. You keep your shots 400 and in you are golden. I also emphasize use the correct bullet as well. The Eld-x and SST is OK for deer, antelope and Varmints. Don't use said bullet on elk same with hogs and black bear. Since I hunt mainly in VA and PA our problem is coyotes. We contend with that every year. Here's something interesting, 7mm Rem mag can be loaded down safely to .280 Rem/.270 Win velocities for whitetail hunting. I like the 140gr Nosler partition, or accubond going around 2900fps. I like the 7mm Rem mag because of versatility, load it down for woodland deer, run normal Accubonds, and partitions in160gr and 175gr loads for hogs, black bear and elk. I don't like hail Mary shots. I prefer to shoot game no further and in inside, my rifles maximum point blank range. No farther than 400 tops. I agree that this elr (extreme long range) stuff should stay into the tactical and competition world. In my opinion this ELR junk has become popular because of the tactical and competition world. A lot of technologies the military uses has become affordable to civilians. Manufacturers need to sell their wares to civilians because the military doesn't need this stuff anymore. Gun writers get paid from said Manufacturers whether they like to admit to it or not. These Gun writers act as salesman for any Manufacturer. Often times they promote bad habits that are quite frankly unethical. In my neck of the woods these gun writers sell the lie and encourage folks to use 22 cal centerfires for deer! Ive seen and heard of stories of guys losing deer shot with .223's. People like shiny new things that's how they get you. People view what some of these gun writers have to say as Gospel. Gun Writers should focus on the Truth. High BC'S ,that only matters in tactical and competition applications. High BC'S only help with wind deflection. It's not by a significant margin like the salesman make it out to be. When you hunt at reasonable and ethical ranges for most people which is 200-300 yards high bc bullets don't really matter and it's a moot point. It's bullet construction. This is especially true if you hunt mainly in woodland environments. Well anyway, know that your videos and knowledge are appreciated. I wish more folks would listen to what you have to say and would quit drinking the proverbial coolaid.

      Thats a stretch into conspiracy theory. According to your point of view there is someone with similar values, a shared love of hunting and shared enjoyment of firearms lying in wait to deceive you in every video or magazine article to make a commission that amounts to pennies. That is just non sense. Let people think for themselves. Yes people suck at this, but its not your place or my place to control them. I take ethical shots and teach my students to improve their skills and get closer rather than risk the animal. I never take a shot for which I have not proven the exact rifle, ammunition, scope, etc on paper targets at the exact range, grouped at that exact range, and done the calculations to determine sufficient energy and velocity is remaining for the bullet to perform. But expecting everyone else to do that just because we do it is an unreasonable expectation. We just need to coach and promote the best ways, stay upbeat, laugh at the sillyness. People will always be silly.

    I am a huge 7mm Rem Mag fan and I think Mr. Selby's dear friend, Mr. Bowman, got it right with what we need in a general big game round. A 160gr Nosler Accubond at 3100fps gives enough energy for elk and moose size game, enough velocity to expand the bullet properly and accuracy to as far as I need or want to shoot, around 600yds. And all with manageable and acceptable recoil. This is all done with around 65gr. powder, much more efficient than a 300 Win Mag shooting a 20gr heavier bullet with 10gr more powder to only get around 150 ft. lb. more energy at any given range with the same bullet design.

    Having graduated HS, around 65-early66 I decided I needed a big game centerfire rifle. A sporting goods store in a nearby big city had a selection of used rifles on the wall, and that surplus 98 Mauser for $18, if I remember, became mine! I bought a box of surplus 8mm to go with it and headed out to the desert to try it out. Not one round out of 20 fired. I guess 20 years was past the shelf life of WWII German primers. I took the rifle back and paid the extra dollar or two to upgrade to the other 98 Mauser on the wall, a somewhat sporterized (stock shortened and varnished) which had been chambered to .30-06. It began life as a 1909 Argentine Mauser, and I've since learned many were later converted from 7.65 mauser to .30-06, even though the barrel's were in .311 caliber. I never new of this back in the 60's, and never shot it with anything but the stock military sights, so have no idea how it grouped. I ended up using the rifle to learn DIY gunsmithing, and I think the disassembled parts are still around here somewhere. In the early 70's I was thinking of rebarreling to 6.5-06, but soon lost the urge. I too used to oogle at the Herter's catalog, and do remember those U-9 Mauser actions. I did end up with one of their extra beefy "U" single stage presses, which I still have. And those fancy wood stock blanks in the catalog in full color sure looked nice, too!

    For low velocity at long range. A soft and accurate bullet is needed . The front half of a Nosler partition is soft. I have hand loaded a few Noser partitions but never got the accuracy out of them as I have had with Sierra and Nosler Ballistic tips. The greater the distances one shoots the greater the accuracy needed by the shooter and firearm. 400 yards is plenty far enough to shoot critters. I'd guess a minimum velocity of 1800 feet per second and minimum of 1800 ft pounds of energy for elk size game.

    • @kylemartin832

      The confusion isn't cartridge related but bullet related. You have target and hunting bullets. The cartrage is irrelevant. The 7PRC is going to be a great hunting round for a few reasons. Suppressors are becoming more popular and with that, shorter barrels. The 7PRC is getting a 175gr to go 2925 out a 20". Also, an 8 twist barrel will stabilize 195gr bullet. That until recently has been 30 cal territory. The perfect do all hunting cartridge if you really think about it. Cheers 🍻

    Point well taken about ethics and common sense… Even concerning bears finding the kill before you can recover it… I am with you on that…
    But…
    The number of elk in Wyoming has nearly doubled from approximately 65,000 in 1980 to just around 117,000 in 2021. There are currently 35 elk herds statewide with the largest being the Jackson herd. (Oct 13, 2022)
    Wyoming is home to around 600 bears. Some of these bears live in Yellowstone National Park, which is largely located in Wyoming. The grizzly population of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem has gone from 136 bears in 1975 to an estimated 730 bears today. (Nov 4, 2022)

    • @TheRealGunsmith
      @TheRealGunsmith  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That may be in OTHER Parts of the state and even here they say elk are at or above objectives. Sadly, their objectives have dwindled greatly. In areas 55 and 56, the two areas covering our valley, North Fork of the Shoshone, the # of elk is, compared to pre-wolf era, down 80-90%, depending on the year. We know, we live and cover the back country. Using their own data obtained a few years ago, from 1998, when #'s started dwindling, up to 3 years ago, we'd had over 6,000 cumulative elk draw tags taken out of these two areas alone! That is criminal. And we've lost more draw tags since.
      And those griz, in YNP alone, by their observations, kill and eat up to over 90% of the elk calves in days.
      Our elk herds in this area, while looking better than they have for a long time, are still not here during elk season. The #'s they use are from data collected in Jan and Feb, away past the hunting season.
      But those elk, since they are migratory aren't here during the season.
      We are WELL aware of the "stats" you posted, but our living, breathing and covering this country for my life time and our youngest son's, who covers even more ground than I do, proves their propoganda does not hold water in these two areas.

    As to those four inch groups at 700 yards, was that a four inch group for each load, or all four of the loads in the same four inch group? This was not clear to me. I would load the Remington Core Lokt 175 grain spitzers with the WC 860 and three shots touching. A super deer load with my 28 inch barrel.

    Thank you for saying what needed said. Hornady makes crap hunting bullets. They are ok with varmint and target bullets, but they don't make hunting bullets. They do have a couple in their catalog, but they are not being made. BTW, Partition bullets are scarcer than teeth on a worm. Seems like the only good hunting bullet one can find around here is a TTSX. It seems like if one wants good hunting ammo, he has to make it himself.

    You said you purchased a Herters u9 FN barreled action made in Yugoslavia. I think you’re mixing manufacturers up. FN actions were always made in Belgium. Your U9 action was most likely a commercial Mauser action basically a copy of the fn made by Zastava factory in Yugoslavia same as the old interarms imported Mark X actions and rifles. They still make them to this day though they are no longer Yugoslavia.

    I don't like to see Randy get so upset. Game reports don't account for all the missed and misplaced shots where the animal ran off and died days later. I think we must let people have the freedom to fail, but there is also a responsibility that comes along with freedom to be honest and do the right thing even if doing the right thing means you don't get sales. All we can do is lead and encourage others in the right direction, teach and model the best knowledge and methods.

      @@SpudOutdoors I could be wrong, but I think Mr. Selby's point is that the Berger Elite hunter is not a game bullet, no matter the name they give it. It's wideley accepted that the Bergers are all very thinly constructed and not designed for deep penetration, in fact they perform the opposite. Typically penetrating about 3" and then massive fragmentation. Yes, they kill under some circumstances, but not the best game bullet design.

    • @SpudOutdoors
      @SpudOutdoors ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnfaulkner4067 3” gets its through the hide and bone then it’s implodes destroying all vitals. That is the point of the bullet and it’s design. Not all bullets have to kill the same way. Say the elk your shooting at 800-1000 yds away takes a subtle side step and your Berger bullet enters back towards the hip area and some how by miracle this puts the angle of the shot to wear the exit would still be through the vitals and out the far front shoulder… will the Berger or eldx type of bullet penetrate three inches and hit any vitals? No is the true answer and now we have a bull who runs off then dies two weeks later. You can say all you want about how you would make sure it was broadside and perfect conditions and may say like the others “well it’s killing game all the time” but the problem is it doesn’t make it ethical or right and no one wants to talk about all the poor shots and the point behind the bullet construction argument the poor hits on the animals. It’s so simple to realize you need penetration and bullets with the constructial intregrety to drive through bone, hide and vitals because it’s hunting and hunting and there is never perfect conditions while hunting period. I’ve seen myself what those bullets do when they hit any bones or even just a rib cage at close and far range and they are not what you want or need in a hunting bullet. Well I take it back they are good on predators and ground squirrel. The best analogy I’ve heard lately with the long distance debate is watch a video of all these guys shooting at targets 1000yds away under controlled environmental conditions with out the adrenaline rush of a 380” bull on the other end of the barrel and see how many hit the 24x24 steel plate with a cold barrel and that should be evidence enough this bs is un ethical and unacceptable. But then again we’re all entitled to an apinion of or own thank goodness. Thanks to you Randy I understand and appreciate what your truly trying to accomplish with these videos. It’s not to point but to teach and I respect you for that reason!

    Seriously, I understand delivering sufficient energy down range.
    I don't believe that elk, or any game animal should be used/treated as a "target".
    Yes (as another gentleman/commentor already stated), if the animal was wounded, you do what you must to put the animal down, but shooting at an unmolested elk at 700 plus yards is (IMO) unnecessary and irresponsible. The vast majority of people simply cannot shoot at those distances no matter what school they go to.

      An old friend of mine, now passed, rip Tom, built a 7mm-378 wby some years ago now. It was based on the classic Mauser98 action with , if I remember correctly, a 30 or so inch barrel. This was built about 35 years ago(or more) and he was way ahead of the current fashion for long and heavy bullets. With the powders available at the time, he could not get the full potential from the cartridge. I used to tease him that he should grind up some charcoal briquettes for propellant. I would love to see what some of the newer powders could do with that cartridge.

    1200 ft lbs barely enough to kill a deer? Right...people have dropped deer with far less for decades. Just admit that Hornady is threatening your business model by designing superior cartridge and chamber dimensions for FACTORY rifles. This is undercutting your business as the average joe can buy a great factory rifle cheaper than a custom one and not need special dies to reload for it. I was skeptical of the new cartridges but I'm seeing more PRC stuff around than I anticipated. The future is now.

      @prowler10393 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Alex sounds like an argument against Nosler partitions and one for Hornady ELD-X for longer distances...didn't think that one through did you? You're right there is a minimum expansion velocity, and tougher the bullet the less likely it is expand at distance. But I agree with Randy's opinion, that we shouldn't be taking big game much beyond 500-600 yards. Too many variables. The ELD-X bashing is over the top though as plenty of people have taken large game with them. Sure at close range they're going to frag with high velocity, but it's about knowing your gear. There is no perfect solution in hunting unless you're setting up over a food plot at a known distance where you control the variables.

If you really think you can shoot that difference with any consistency, then you are totally delusional! But, if you could, it would make absolutely No Difference in the actual outcome for "hunting purposes"! This is ALL "Marketing Hype"! 🤮

If this guy ever built one rifle that would do this every hunter in the world would be on his waiting list. And by the way when did you develop the Wapiti express again? In the 40’s?
