All you need to know about Thailand’s Education Visa

  • There are many ways to stay in Thailand legally for an extended period of time. One way is through the Education Visa or ED Visa.
A Non-Immigrant ED Visa is the official name for a Thai Education Visa. This visa is for foreign nationals aged 12 or more who wish to remain in Thailand to follow a full-time educational program. For those who want to stay in Thailand but aren’t eligible for other Thailand visas, the education visa for learning Thai is a common choice. However, because Thai authorities are coming down hard on the problem, this strategy is no longer effective. If you sign up for classes only to get a visa, you risk yourself being banned from Thailand unless you really want to learn Thai and actively attend classes.
An education visa is granted in Thailand to enable a foreigner to learn the Thai language or take other related courses at approved schools in Thailand. People have been known to get an education visa to learn other skills such as Thai boxing, scuba diving and many more instead of just studying the language.

My wife and I stayed 6 months in 2007 on an education visa to take a SCUBA diving instructor course. There were folks at that school that had been there for more than two years because after becoming a SCUBA instructor there are multiple higher levels to study. Those at the school that stayed longer to become staff at the school all married Thais and got permanent residency.

If your over 50 years of age you can't get a ED visa to study Thai, Thai immigration changed the rules in Nov/2022. Before that there was no age limit. I applied for an ED visa in October/2022 was approved by the Ministry of Ed, when I went to immigration with the school to start the visa process I was not approved. Immigration changed the rules if your over 50 they won't issue a visa.

I'm a little frustrated, have watched a few vids like this and none give the hardcore details. Like I heard minimum 8 hours per week. There aren't a fixed number of weeks per month so is that 8 hours at least 52 times a year? OK so what happens when the school has no classes for a week with a holiday or you are between sessions? Also: You have to pay at least 50% for the entire course (12 months stay) even though the government may randomly refuse to renew your visa at 90 days 120 days 180 days 240 days renewal points? That's rough. The school I was looking at (some of them) said you can get 12 months but they only had a large class package only 7 courses long (400 hours),, if I finished their curriculum in that time and moved on to advanced classes and needed to switch schools (very likely) it wouldn't make sense to have already paid for 1 full year at a school that doesn't have enough advanced classes yet. I would burn through the 400 hours in only ~6 months. Also can you really not take a single week off to rest at some point?

...I don't think it is illegal to study as a retiree? (Worth double checking, I think Indonesia is the only country where it is really illegal.) So even considering all the trouble of an Ed visa and the government looking over your shoulder seems crazy when it is so straight-forward, being 50, to get a retirement visa. Anyone else know?? Retirement is like literally just put money in an account and be done with it. Easy peasy
