@@rickh5088 it was more of just being humorous, instead of factual. Didn't mean to come off as sarcastic. But it was interesting to see the spread not be effected that much until basically it had no barrel, so seeing the video you could get a funny conclusion that adding length to your shotgun is diminishing returns where the added length would make it more cumbersome in tight areas. Then assuming that the choke comment is correct then that could make people believe that a really short shotgun with a choke is the best balence for a shotgun.
Near-maximum velocity in tests is usually achieved by the 60cm mark (in 12-bore caliber). As far as spread is concerned the tests by the Greener company indicate that shotguns gain around 2% less spread per 2 inches of barrel ( ~5cm). The bibliography for the test can be found online. However an important parameter to shotgun barrel lenght is fitting to the shooter. Depending on the biometrics of a person, they might shoot better with a 71cm barrel than a 66cm one etc. In the end, provided a barrel is longer than a sensible minimum, its all personal preference from there, or a matter of intented use. Has to be said this is all based on shooting shot. Slug shooting has whole different parameters and usually benefits from short barrels (50-60cm)

I'm a foreigner that previously had no idea about the ATF and gun control, until Wendigoon's Waco video and his most eye-opening quote: "you gotta remember that the ATF is an extension of the IRS." That shit expanded my brain, ladies and gentlemen.
Not really, no. It may have started out that way (before there was an IRS, and before ATF was ATF), but that's really not accurate. ATF is Department of Justice. It really was never the ATF until it left the Treasury. The argument that it has much of anything to do with revenue doesn't make a lot of sense (although you could say it did back when $200 was a lot of money, that was really more about keeping guns out of the hands of regular Americans than about making money).
Try doing work for an IRS man and then having him rip you off and refuse to pay for the extra work he had you do. You realize that these Orange man hating folks that work for the IRS are seriously crooked individuals. I asked him if he thought the IRS would target conservatives again like they did under Obama, he said the IRS has never been an impartial agency and he had elected officials dead to rights on obvious tax fraud and was told by his superiors to cease and desist on those cases. Pretty eye opening experience.
@@reliantncc1864 The ATF isn't actually an extension of the IRS but it might as well be because most of what they do is make sure people pay their taxes on NFA items and arrest those who don't.

There are audio recordings of people instructing their underlings on which parts of the building to soak in fuel.
The white material that imbedded itself to the surface of the ballistic gel block is called “shot buffering” and its purpose is to take up space in the payload portion of a shotgun shell. Additionally buffering helps prevent shot deformation as it travels down the barrel and the first couple of feet after the shot exits barrel while the shot string is lengthening in flight

This is correct. The shell length and chamber are the same. If you use a 2 3/4" shell in a 2 2/2" chambered barrel the chamber pressure will be too high and will eventually cause a big problem. Be safe Sir.
Fun fact: the stated length of a shotgun shell is actually the length of the chamber or a fired/empty shell. The shell will be closer to the stated length once it's fired and the crimp opens up. Fun fact No. 2: Matt needs a chrono.
@@hipointuser333 Wait it's not actually illegal!? You don't say! Wow I never would have realized a Law abiding citizen like Matt would knowingly post a video of him committing a Felony. Color me very disappointed /sarcasmendshere

I have no idea why shotguns are nerfed so hard in video games where the effective range is 6 ft and the spread is worse than birdshot out of a 2" barrel lol
11:54 the reason is when you fire the shot the chamber has to be as long as the unrolled casing otherwise it would make the barrel smaller than the projectile going through increasing chamber pressure and the danger hopefully that makes since I feel I could have said that better
When you think you think about it Matt technically has been showing us how to get into felonies since the beginning of his channel when he would put random stuff in shotgun shells!
Oh is that what he said? Not trying to be cute I thought he said “All good laws are an infringement” which is the opposite point and technically true lol. That’s genuinely ironic.
Im curious about the ballistics now Surely shortening the barrel (though increasing spread) would remove alot of the energy behind those shots- because theres less barrel as you said. It wouldve been pretty neat to see penetration throughout the cuts Either way, cool video and thanks for sharing!
I mean the spread increase from what we saw wasnt much. at 5 yards it's roughly always center mass and from a farther distance, I'd assume the trend would follow proportionally although I don't have a shotgun or a license to chop it's barrel off to test that.
I had a polished nickel barrel 12 gauge shotgun that the barrel was so short that I could fit it, broken down, into a lunch bag. The bag was just around 10 to 12 inches deep. I sold it to that very cop but the good news was he gave me twice what I paid for it.

Ever seen an anti-shark 'bang stick'? It's a 12g sealed buckshot at the end of a pole. Slamming it against the shark makes it go off a point blank range. You just created a land version! :)
The length of the shell is measured before the hull gets crimped, so the shell will be the listed length AFTER you fire it. If your gun has a 3" bolt stroke and you put in a shell that's 3" long when *crimped,* then you won't be able to eject it after firing.
It is measured that way because the chamber is length of the un-crimped shell. This is so the shell does not extend into the forcing cone when fired potentially creating an overpressure situation.

@@hedgehogdinosaur3023 My apologies, I am with you in spirit. I assumed that was you trying to be factual and an ass at the same time, my bad.

I'm a foreigner that previously had no idea about the ATF and gun control, until Wendigoon's Waco video and his most eye-opening quote:
"you gotta remember that the ATF is an extension of the IRS."
That shit expanded my brain, ladies and gentlemen.

The white material that imbedded itself to the surface of the ballistic gel block is called “shot buffering” and its purpose is to take up space in the payload portion of a shotgun shell. Fun fact shotgun shells are measured from the full length of the shell before they are crimped😊 great video as always keep up the good work
This is correct.

I'm still trying to get over the fact that Matt didn't know that they measure shotgun shells from the unrolled length

i dont even know the difference between rolled and unrolled
I know how you feel. I thought he was playing it up for the camera, but I'm not sure
Modern shotgun shells are crimped, not rolled. The entire shell is measured after firing, not before. The chamber is the fired length, not the unfired length otherwise upon firing the shell would be longer than the chamber creating excessive chamber pressure and deformed shot
Cringe
Finally a shotgun that works the way the ones in videogames do.
For sure
Yep.2mm(millimeters) effective range just like in games (okay i'm overexxagerating but still,)
I guess if they were as deadly as in rl those games would be broken
We need a kolibri style shotgun. A micro mossberg pump that runs on snake shot. Ths atf rippin us every time we want to do a barrel length velocity test my guy
I have no idea why shotguns are nerfed so hard in video games where the effective range is 6 ft and the spread is worse than birdshot out of a 2" barrel lol
11:54 the reason is when you fire the shot the chamber has to be as long as the unrolled casing otherwise it would make the barrel smaller than the projectile going through increasing chamber pressure and the danger
hopefully that makes since I feel I could have said that better

Surely shortening the barrel (though increasing spread) would remove alot of the energy behind those shots- because theres less barrel as you said. It wouldve been pretty neat to see penetration throughout the cuts
Either way, cool video and thanks for sharing!
I mean the spread increase from what we saw wasnt much. at 5 yards it's roughly always center mass and from a farther distance, I'd assume the trend would follow proportionally although I don't have a shotgun or a license to chop it's barrel off to test that.
Same as short vs long spitball shooter, the longer one has more power.

3:10 Cameraman speaking straight facts.
Yeah, it's both uncrimped *and* chamber length for safety and extraction. I've been taught this when got my shotgun license (not American)
