To be entirely fair: the decision about it was made in Moscow and not in Kiev. USSR was a name given to the Russian Empire by Lenin after the Revolution. Neither Kiev (or Baku, or Tibilisi or Erevan or, or, or were involved in decision making. So to blame Ukrainians for the Soviet invasion is funny.

I remember back in 2015 millions of Syrian migrants went to Hungary and Orban rightfully said that Hungary can't host them but they're free to go elsewhere. The mainstream media immediately labelled him as a 'racist' & 'authoritarian'. Eventually the migrants went to Germany and Orban ensured that Hungary's borders remained secure. He's one of the few remaining leaders in Europe with some common sense.

I knew Hungarians living in the Western Ukraine. In the late 90s and early 00s they were regularly attacked by Ukrainian nationalists, many were forced to denounce their heritage and language. Don't let the propaganda fool you, it's not GOOD vs EVIL.

After that Crimea and the region of Donbass (ethnically Russian) officially turned to Putin for protection. Crimea was lucky and, hope, will stay peaceful. No, what you're talking about is suppression. This stage is too big and it's reach too wide for a mass scale propaganda scheme to work- especially on the population in the united states. The government can only suppress it can't hide what is actually happening around the world- the only way they'd have success is if they ALREADY had North Korea level information suppression and social isolation. The US and NATO's strategy is to aid Ukraine as much and as long as possible in the hope that Putin either gives up due to the high cost of war or is deposed by a disgruntled populace. Orban correctly realizes that neither of those 2 scenarios is likely.

Despite the sanctions placed on Hungary Orban is going to great lengths to sabotage the war effort in Russia's favour. He knows that a ceasefire without returning occupied territory back to Ukraine will only lead to more invasions of Ukraine by Russsia. So, his policies will only lead to more Hungarian Ukranian deaths in Ukraine rather than save their lives, which he is claiming to do.

We don't confront them like that because our energy dependency, the (oppressed) Hungarian minority in Ukraine which can be target for retaliation, we don' let go weapons in the Hungarian-Ukrainian border from any source because they would go trough that territory and make it a target (but we let through weapons to other NATO countries even if they end up in Ukraine), also although I don't know how much Orbán is basing his decision on that, but as I said most of the Hungarians have no blind faith in the West and NATO, so the prevalent opinion is to leave us out of your power games. Especially tat we have no obligations mixing in this conflict as Ukraine is not a NATO country. It would be different if a member state would have been attacked, then all other would have bound to treat it as an attack on themselves. I mean NATO would collapse if it's doesn't keep article 5 from whatever reason, because all other member state would loose it's trust in the alliance.

Orban is right to call for peace talks. It’s a complete stalemate. The longer this war goes on the worse it is for everybody.
They tried that from the start. Russia didn't budge, instead they used it to take even more territory and hold a sham referendum. How do you think peace talks will work with a country which uses every other reason or lie to invade Ukraine (which they wouldn't invade once they surrounded it)? There were talks for seize fire and peace talks, none stop especially in first months, Russia was still bombing Ukraine during "seize fire". After that everyone saw there is no point in trying to talk with Russia. Its words means nothing. The only way is to support defense in Ukraine.

It's funny how when these interviews take place re Russian invasion and this conflict, the interviewers never approach the subject from the standpoint of a violent coup d'etat in Kiev which removed the legitimate Government of Ukraine, which in turn heralded a raft of anti Russian legislation, and attacks on ethnic Russians, and a war waged against the largely ethnic Russian populations of the regions of the Donbas right on the border of the Russian Federation. At the point the Russians invaded, this conflict had been going on for 8 years and some 14, 000 people, thousands of them civilians, had already died. It might be refreshing to hear some of that background if you're trying to understand how things have reached this pass.
The Western media are in denial that Bachmut has been taken. I wouldn't hold my breath about the origin of this war.
The 14k figure, 2014-2021, includes combatants and civilians on both sides. You pretend that Russia invaded only now, but the entire separatist movement & militias in Donbas were Russian orchestrated and supplied. MH17 was shot down by a Russian Buk system in eastern Ukraine. Russian regular army forces aided the militias. After the first two years, civilian casualties were minimal. Now, after a little more than 1 year into the "special military operation" Russia has lost 200,000 kia/wia at least. Who knows how many of the so-called DNR & LNR forces have been killed-in fact, far more in this phase of Putin's war than in the early period, 2014-2021.

And I am sorry for all those Hungarians, who want better and live in freedom. Of course I have nothing against them. But seeing how country, which should have learned from history, is flirting with the bully, makes me angry. Only way to save Ukrainian people is to make this war stop, and Russia listens only force. It does seem like ukraine's negotiating power is only going to decrease or flatline. Russia being a large and authoritarian country is just in a better position to maintain a war of attrition compared to Ukraine who's funding is dependent on democracies.
