Hungary's Orban and his political alliances | DW News

  • Hungary is a member of both the EU and NATO but the foreign policy approach of the country's prime minister, Viktor Orban, often rejects the sensibilities of these alliances. Not one serving EU leader came to Hungary in August 2023, when Prime Minister Viktor Orban celebrated Hungary's birthday. Instead, his guest list included for example: the heads of Turkey, Serbia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Qatar. What's going on in Hungary? And why does Orban have the friends that he does?

Countries signed the UN asylum treaty (including Hungary) No country is "allowing immigration" most countries work according to the treaty and their independent rule of law.
Immigration is not bad per se for a country, Europe would have been bankrupt long ago as too little people are born to sustain the economies in European countries, governments walk a fine line between the population that want less immigration and companies that are screaming for more (cheap) labour.
Hungary does the US-way of cheap labour, just make 1% extremely rich, and the rest of the country gets poor and is willing to work for close to nothing just to stay alive. And Orban gets his votes because the 99% of people are afraid their life will be even worse with immigrants coming to their country that will steal their jobs.
ps. Would you clean toilets for a living? do you know any people who would?

3:29 - Yeah, and there were no "how to prepare for freezing to death" types of demonstration films here. So it is interesting that while the criticism is sharp in terms of how low the salaries are (I would note that there are more German / English / French / American and so on owned employers in the country than Hungarian ones), they expect us to give up the cheap and reliable energy source for an unpayable (at least x 5) cost and uncertain origin. So we should to practically replace the Russian gas and oil, which reliably arrives via pipeline with an American source, which arrives from the other side of the world to ports that Hungary does not have, and pipes, which ends at the national border, because our dear western neighbors didn't really care about building the right european infrastructure for the untermensch of central Europe. And just because Putin so and so, and for the holy Ukraine, where, by the way, one year after the outbreak of the war, in the former Hungarian territories (National minority areas in Ukraine inhabited by Hungarians), statues of Hungarian origin are torn down by Ukrainians and Hungarian schools are forbidden to speak in Hungarian. It was probably the most important thing they had to do besides the war... How interesting, how interesting. Of course, the list could go on and on... and if I feel like it and have time, I'll share a few thoughts, because it is more than likely that in the west, which is full of freedom of speech, such stories are not heard by the dear audience, because such excellent channels like this somehow don't like to share...

why would there be a special bond? the two countries are historically and culturally very separate. hungary used to form an imperial state with austria, and they once or twice occupied poland or parts of it for a little while, but who hasn't?
in the 20th century, poland went into WW2 as territory divided between germany, austria-hungary and russia, and got I think its second go of independence afterwards. in WW2, hungary was allied with germany. both poland and hungary were eastern bloc members, but hungary functioned more independently and more open to the west in trade and travel than most eastern bloc countries, whereas poland was almost as much of a puppet state as east germany.
hungary has more historic ties to austria and to the balkans than to poland.
in language, hungary is extremely distinct, as hungarian together with finnish and estonian form the finno-ugric languages, which originate in the ural mountain region of today's russia and are not part of and are highly distinct from the indo-european languages spoken by basically everyone else in europe. not only is polish more similar to other slavic languages like czech or russian than it is to hungarian, but it's also more similar to german, portuguese, swedish, farsi, or hindi.

There are basic principles on the separation of power, meant to safeguard democracy as well as some basic principles of human rights that the EU demands of it’s members. Hungary has been dancing on the gray line and increasingly stepping out of line. The EU is a club of liberal democratic countries, set up to try and prevent the kind of horrors that happened during the first and second world wars. When a member starts flirting with authoritarianism then the EU has full rights to pressure their member to comply. If the country doesn’t like it, it can leave the club. Brexit has demonstrated that no one is forced to be a member of this club if they don’t want to. It would be a shame if Hungary decides that they would prefer to be outside, but at the same time, if they keep moving further in this authoritarian direction and don’t leave the EU, I think they should be kicked out.

What one can see now, is clearly a political game between left and right wing in the EU. As you said, EU has left wing, Hungary elected right winged government, and since 2010, Orban is the pm again and again. But it can change, as free will election is provided really. Left wing is not so favorable to the majority in Hungary because of Gyurcsány Ferenc, who has failed as he admitted (in a closed party) they were cheating at everytimes, and in every possible ways during their reign, just to keep the power, and get more money from the system to their hands, meanwhile driving Hungary to bankruptcy....
Left wing can say, "ohh there is still the leaders are stiling money", but yet the country at least doing well, and ppl know, all on high level would still money, so whatever....
Basically no human rights or whatsoever is in danger in Hungary, this are left wing bullshits....as this "report" also false...Hungary did all the structural changes what EU wanted, still no money from EU. This is the game, aiming to have leftists in rule of Hungary, nothing else....

@@EzraBenKhazarHere is a hungarian view for you. The origins of the hungarian nation pretty much far from the present population composition of Hungary. The hungarian language is Finno-Ugric - so relating with Finn, Estonian and north-east European smaller folks. (Manshi, Khanti, Mordvin etc.). This is the core of the hungarian language - our basic words coming from the Finno-Ugric root. Hungarian or "Magyar " tribes moved to South of Ural and migrated to West through 500 years. During this period Hungarians met with turkish folks, and few of them melted into the hungarian tribe. The Hungarians who arrived to their present place in the 9th century weared turkic clothes, used turkic war strategy and tribunal system, turkic names. After Hungary decided to baptize to christianity, the western impact became determinative. During the 1000 years long history so many invasions, resettlements, war happened in the territory of the country, the uralic population melted into the big central european genetic pool. This mean the genetical map of present Hungary very similar to the Austrian genetical map. Present Hungarians keeping their unique culture, holding Eastern and uralic impacts (for example the pentatonic folk music), and holding a unique Hungarian spirit. Meantime the present Hungarians a descendants from slavic and german people - this visible in their outlook and characteristic. According to the DNA map, the Hungarians mostly Celtic R1b (27%), Slavic R1a (25%) and Germanic I1 (21%) and South Slavic I2a (14%). As you see 87% of the present hungarian population holding this very european genetic admixture. Orbán's himself has austrian ancestry. So you can see that in Hungary the cultural heritage and the very strong spirit survived the times, meanwhile the genes are not! This is based on the Hungarian language, as we saying "The nation living in it's language!"....

I like DW channel for various reasons, but i also think it's a propoganda machine.
    1. Definition of Conservative. Its someone that is change averse, someone who is not prone to challange its beliefs. If you are born in a family in US, where changing sex with surgery is absolutely normal, thinking that meat industry is the reason of climate change, or Putin is a dictator that just wants to stay in power and you are not even willing to challenge those beliefs, then you are still a CONSERVATIVE, definitely not progressive. As semantic it may sound, that exactly what media does on these subjects. So this wording in political media is absolutely misleading.
    2. If anyone watching this video is not familiar with Jordan Peterson, instantly would be shocked and condemn the organisers to invite such person. Would raise a lot of questions. But we know very well who Jordan Peterson is.
    3. I'm from Azerbaijan. DW news calls Aliev an autocratic leader, dictator and so on. Sure, i was born in 1995, his faster was in power and now him. But guess what? That is exactly what is needed. We are only 30 years independent country rich in Oil and Gas and many other resources. When you are an ally with Turkey and Russia, this is the form of goverment you get, its simple how it works. But
But we know the cost of leaning towards West and going againsy Russia. We have seen it with Georgia , Armenia and now with Ukraine. The cost to become an ally of West is thousands of dead bodies, lost territories, and decades of delayed burocracy and in the end you are not even sure if they will contunie to support you. E.g. Ukraine case.
Do we want that? No thanks man.
Im happy with Aliev and his policies. People are getting wealthier year by year, life standards are significantly increasing month by month, corruption is gone from vast majority of areas in the country, it's very safe, i can go to city center at midnight with family and not even worry a bit. Try that in Paris.
Azerbaijan keeps good relationships with countries like Russia, Turkey, Israel, China, and have economic growing economic and cultural ties with Western world.

We, Ukrainians, have been defending our freedom, territory, the right to rule on our own land, the right to exist and other sovereign rights from Russia since 2014, when Russia treacherously attacked, violating our agreements (Treaty on the State Border, Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation , Budapest Memorandum and others). Ukraine has never attacked anyone and has never been an empire in history. Zelensky, the composition of parliament, all previous presidents and parliaments came to power democratically, that is, they were elected. Yes, we still have a strong oligarchic influence, there are problems with corruption, but if you look at the trend, you will see progress (largely thanks to the European vector). For 300 years in the Russian Empire (and then the USSR, remember Holodomor), the Ukrainian language and Ukrainian identity were infringed on at the state level, but now we have strong support in the world and we will not give up the right to our own national state, for which we fought for so long.

One thing his government does that others should do to counter the lack of babies being born in western countries is cutting income tax from new moms. Meanwhile in places like Canada those without kids (who want them but can't afford them) work to pay a high tax and barely get any help for their children when they have them. If a couple even gathers the means to be able to do it (an ever so rare thing these days) the tax benefits and returns are a joke, barely scratch the surface of how much it costs for a family so survive.

With 3 children also the gov grants about half a flat worth of money and gives a super cheap gov protected loan that covers about the other half of a flat and the repayment is about the same ammount as the monthly tax cut. So after all if you have 3 children, you get granted about 15 years of salary of an average Joe.

Hungary is not an anti-EU, pro-Russian country, as it was said in the whole video. Yes, Orban has insane and corrupt policies and I hate him as a Hungarian. But don't equalize the whole Hungary with Orban. Most of the Hungarian population supports the EU and Ukraine.
