      Ref finishes: This is #45's first unsportsmanlike foul toward potential disqualification.
      Collinsworth: Yeah, the league is going to look at that play. He's looking at probably a $25,000 fine at least for killing another player.
      Tirico: Come on, why can't they be allowed to *play the game anymore*?
      Terry McCaullie: Yeah, that's a good call by the official to see that holding by 21 while he's being murdered. He was grabbing at 45's head and neck area and the league is trying to prevent head or neck injuries when their players murder each other. It would have been really easy to enforce the 15 yards for beating a player to a bloody pulp.
      Collinsworth: You know if Patrick Mahomes killed someone, I'd still defend him!

    That fact that Tomlin didn't get flagged for standing on the field right in front of a returner with a clear path to the endzone is insane and always one of the most irritating things I have ever seen in football, I wasn't even a fan of either team in that situation, but I was as irritated as the Baltimore fans probably were

Honestly, though, it would've been the call of the side judge to give him the second unsportsmanlike depending on what Sherman said...all I can figure is that he somehow kept it professional and didn't dip into personal.

      Well, there is a rule ("Palpably Unfair Act") that allows the refree to impose whatever penalty he feels is appropriate in extreme cases. I've never heard of it being used, but it does exist.
      The rules should be revised to include something along the lines of "if any of the following penalties occur on a play in which, in the judgment of refree, the act that caused the penalty is the sole reason that a score did not occur is a palpably unfair act. The penalty is ejection of the offending player and the score is awarded".

      There should be some sort of disqualification for egregious facemasks. Disqualification for the remainder of the quarter plus the next full quarter would be about right. A "flagrant facemask" penalty, for where the victims head and neck were violently jerked and twisted in a way that could cause injury. Defining the standard for flagrant will take some work. Will need to be video-reviewable to determine if it meets standard for "flagrant", because it's too much to ask of human refs to make that judgment in real time.

      1) at live speed there's not 1 ref on the planet who wouldn't call that a facemask, you have to take it down to slo-mo before you get to ok technically it's really enough to be a facemask
      2) taking a guy down by the shoulder like that is a textbook horsecollar as the rule is written, so different penalty, but ultimately still a 15 yarder that put the ball at the same spot and gives an untimed down.

    • @ryanstejskal1506
      @ryanstejskal1506 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I don't think it's feasible to design the face mask to both (a) pop out when pulled and (b) reliably stay in place when hit/pushed. Face masks, especially for linemen, take a decent amount of contact, and you don't want it to pop off and leave the player's face unprotected (after all, that's the point of having the face mask in the first place).
      As is, the face mask is actually screwed onto the helmet, to make it very unlikely to come off accidentally (but still changeable in the locker room; there are several different face mask designs, and different players have different preferences).

      @@ryanstejskal1506 You could be right. However I interested to know if any tests have ever been done? I also suggest that if a face mask is developed to detach by being pulled and able to withstand significant impact then it gives added deterent for the foul in the first place.

      @Alsebra 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It may also have to do with leaving fewer hazards on the field of play. Say a facemask pops off apropos of nothing (say a manufacturing issue) at the very start of a play...that means that the play would have to immediately stop and either be repeated or penalized and repeated.

      Seeing as players have received unsportsmanlike penalties for tossing the ball at refs, I think he knew that would've been the game for him. That said, both the interference call and the holding call were valid and the unsportsmanlike came when he decided to remove his helmet (which is part of the rules). The side judge was the one who actually allowed him to stay in the game...had the judge decided the commentary got too personal, he was within his rights to ring him up on another unsportsmanlike and disqualify him.

    I wish i could find video of it, but i believe it was Ravens @ Washington maybe 2009 give or take. But Washington was down at Goal to Go inside the 5 and the Ravens kept stopping them. Every time it got to 3rd down the Ravens would commit another penalty and Washington would get a new fresh set of downs. Washington must have had 8 or so attempts to push the ball in from just a yard out and each time Baltimore stopped them dead at the line of scrimmage. Finally on like the 9th attempt that resulted in a clean 4th down either Kelly Gregg or Haloti Ngata turned around to the Washington end zone stands and flipped the fans the middle finger in triumph. Ravens got ANOTHER flag and 1 play later Washington finally pushed it in for a touchdown lol.
