  • We go hands-on with Laser Dance, Starship Home, and other mixed-reality games shown at this year's Game Developers Conference! With both the Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro now in the hands of gamers, we chat with developers about how they're implementing mixed reality and hand-tracking technologies across each platform.

    as a game developer and a masters degree student for game development and design, imagine this 50 years into the future, we're in the beginning of what would soon enough become our reality for real. AR wouldn't be called AR anymore, it would just be called "life as we know it".

      Yeah I don't see why we couldn't have a game "layer" always active, picking up rare items on our way to work. We've always been really confined to starting a game and playing it in a time slot. When people start wearing glasses all the time, it will open up to more interesting game modes, eventually existing in many different "dimensions". I always think about dennou coil.

    14:40 I'm so happy to hear Unseen Diplomacy getting a shout out. Still worth a buy at three bucks on Steam. It's short but so awesome if you have the play space. The dev's Triangular Pixels were working on a bigger follow up to the game, but I think they ran into funding issues and/or life happened, kids, etc. Unseen Diplomacy really captured my imagination with the possibilities of VR all the back back in 2016.

    I mean, that just seems like something they will use to get even more info about people for advertising and other stupid shit. Sniffing in the mesh algorithms to be like 'oh hey, that's an Xbox and I don't see anything I recognize as ___ peripheral...let's make sure to advertise that to them constantly.' Or do worse things.
    Plus, simple things like the laser game requiring AR is one thing...but the more complicated you get with mixed reality games will make it more 'haves' and 'have-nots' shit from RL that most people play video games to avoid. A lot of people just don't have the room to play those games. Even the laser game I could never play in AR at home. That's why current games have that sort of thing as optional usually and all VR games tend to have alternate movement options for people who just can't move around large spaces RL to play a game.
    I get that Adam can be a bit myopic about things - especially overpriced Apple bullshit because they give him a lot of $$ to make their overpriced garbage look better than it could even dream of being - but that's exactly the point. It's too easy for the predatory companies to buy people off to lie and insert crap into these products that most of us would consider malicious if they knew the full details. But usually Norm is a lot more level-headed about the negatives of things and provides a balanced view...strange that he didn't even seem to ask that question about users who might not have the space or scale of space to play some of these. Perhaps he used that bedroom as it was the most cramped room in his house, but that room is spacious as hell compared to what I've had to live in most of my life and share with other people at that.

      @@armourosWell, these kits do have object tracking and even the Q3 has a depth sensor that gives the kit really accurate cloud-point data. My Q2 even has pet and human detection so if a person or animal is right outside my boundary or goes inside my boundary, I will get a 3d mixed reality view of them in my space. So it;s entirely possible for the game devs to make it so other people, pets, or things could trip the laser.

    • @evolicious
      @evolicious 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fletcherjacobs3688I don't think you are understanding this technology at all. The quest is just an on-board computer (SOC) with XR and VR capabilities. It is not projecting anything into the real world, it is using IR cameras and a depth sensor to make a point-cloud based 3d environment in the on-board computer that can be used to create virtual apps in or on. It's just a device to play games on.
      Though I admit, I have strapped a widelens IR flashlight on my Quest3 and hiked around in true darkness and saw literally everything, in 3d, arguably better than military-grade gen 3 NVGs. The resolution sucked in comparison, but I had such a wide field of view, I didn't really care, lol.
      I'd say it makes for a perfect way to move around your house in complete darkness if you have an IR light.

    • @evolicious
      @evolicious 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Doubtful that is the case, with a proper frame rate and choosing to teleport for locomotion (until you can acclimate to artificial locomotion), you will not get any sort of nausea. You may also be not adjusting the IPD or the HMD correctly on your head, that is also super important to not getting nausea.

    I still can't accept that the OG term, Augmented Reality, is being replaced with mixed reality. It's so much less cool.

    • @evolicious
      @evolicious 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That is not true. VR, XR, and AR are still very separate technologies. What we are seeing here, is XR (mixed reality). The only AR device in the consumer space(well-kinda), is the Hololense/2.
      If you are perceiving the real world through digital means such as a optical sensor, then it is XR. AR is only projected or overlayed onto a transparent material to AUGMENT reality. While Mixed reality can completely change the entire scene and dimensions due to it being in an underlying VR environment.

    • @98Zai
      @98Zai 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've heard people say before that there is a negative connotation to AR, since there were a lot of crappy apps that capitalized on it way back. Mixed reality should only really be used for applications that include both AR and VR.

    • @evolicious
      @evolicious 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope. Mixed reality (MR/XR) is a halfway step into AR from VR. In XR, you are perceiving the outside world through digital means (an optical sensor) and then that world can be changed or configured virtually in any way with the dimensions provided (room-scan and object tracking) (seen on the Quest2/3, snapdragon XR2 dev kit, Varjo XR3, and Apple Vision Pro). AR is the real world with digital augmentation. Such as a transparent material in front of you that allows virtual things to be projected on it or into your eyes to augment the reality, and limited to the dimensions it sees (some room-scam and object tracking) (as seen with Microsoft Hololens/2). VR of course is completely without any reference to the real world (such as Vive, Rift, WMR kits, Pimax, etc.) outside of some passthrough/MR mechanics like Quest's room tracking that will give you better sense of boundaries while in VR.
      Now, what you may be referring to is, "spacial computing". This is a very stupid marketing term that Apple has come up with (as with all things they try to "innovate" with), as a means to make their technology seem proprietary to their tech-illiterate market. This way they can separate their technology from the perceived notion of what Meta, Valve, MS, Google, and Varjo, have created. However the fact is that it is the same technology, though much worse in many ways due to Apple's R&D isolated ecosystem that does not account for what these companies have spent tens of billions of dollars to learn about this technology and how to make it viable for use.
      VR/XR/AR is the correct format for all three of these technologies. Currently the best kits are VR & XR, old gen kits are only VR, XR is commercial-only (besides AVP), and there are no consumer AR kits (outside of paying for a hololense/2, but why on earth would you do that).

    • @evolicious
      @evolicious 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@98ZaiYup, games like pokemon go that stated the app was AR, when it was indeed mixed reality. There was a lot of marketing companies that jumped the gun and had no clue what this technology was and they didn't know how to market it to people. It was a pretty bad mistake that hurt the viability of mass adoption.

    • @98Zai
      @98Zai 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@evolicious Anything that uses a camera background or projects on the real world and does NOT have a VR mode is AR. Laser dance is AR. The term Mixed reality should only really be used for stuff like tracked real life objects in VR, it's actually a very narrow term. Things like valve's room scale VR could be perceived as MR because it allows you to see furniture and room boundaries, but a program for Index that doesn't functionally utilize those things is not MR. (allowing valves grid to pop up does not count)
      It's different in terms of headsets, something that can do both VR and AR could be a mixed reality headset.
      In terms of software I see it as nothing but a fresh buzzword. It's meant to sound new to attract a new audience who were burned by that crappy implementation of pokémon.
