I've been working all day on sliding into the major third from the minor and it's already a huge help. Really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us Levi! Can't wait to start messing around with the 6th too.

Great lesson, this is such an important concept so many people ignore. There's a lot of mileage you can get out of this.

'Why do I like this?, why does it sound cool, How can I adapt it to my own playing?' That, in a nutshell, is the true lesson...You hit it spot on...

Two ideas I picked from analysising Marty Friedman and from his lesson videos that help in this break out of the box idea is one he calls "the neighborhood" and one where he puts notes, either chromatic or diatonic, inside the phrase, be it filling or enclosing the phrase. The neighborhood idea is let's say we have a minor pentatonic coming from a natural minor harmony. Wherever my hand maybe, it's legal to play notes or arpeggios from that harmony along with my a minor pentatonic phrases in a way to make the sequence more exotic. Like when you are phrasing, you probably have a standard road you go down and this "neighborhood" takes you down a different road or path to get to the same point.

Aye and that's why pentatonic scale is the king for improv. As long as you know your basic intervals and learn them on your fretboard, you can start adding embellishments and spice things up. =)

I find when soloing through the changes ,using caged shapes there is alway's a pentatonic shape of each chord under the fingers using major or minor scale, as well as dominant 7th arpeggios, by the way great lesson, you've got that Matt Schofield flavour nailed. Best wishes.

yeah man! It's ALMOST like those 5 pentatonic shapes are the 5 CAGED positions and all these guys that shit on the system use it extensively! haha
thanks for the kind words :)

Hi, Levi! Recently found out about your channel, great content! I have a question related to the caparison mjr, you made a video about it but since its a bit old, I thought about asking you here. I too am a big MR and SX fan and I just stumbled upon an opportunity to get an MJR. Its the matte version owner says its from 2011 and claims to be the last year this model was produced. In your mjr vid you said something about the changing in neck construction. I cant find this info anywhere! How did his model change? Sorry for asking you here. Could really use help. Cheers, man!

Great lesson. Very clear when just play an A(7) chord. But the next chord is coming soon in the blues progression. 😂😜😎
A good starting point though. Thx!
