I back up a singer, we do old traditional, Hawaiian folk songs, some have fast chord changes, thinking ahead with arpeggios to the next chord has proved to be so important in my improvising, if a chord has more beats to it I fill the arpeggios with pentatonics, and if it gets alot of time I'll throw in the modes, it's such a simple idea but its something that has helped me stay in the groove when jamming during chord changes.
Note names almost never exist to me, other than to see my root note. From there it’s just an interval. What’s the 6th of Db? No idea anymore, but I’ve played it before my brain even begins to process the question.
@@LeviClay If knowing the note names plays such a small and unimportant role, why the hell am I trying to learn all the names on the fret board and the note names in the arpeggios?

In the arpeggios: It helps to understand how to use different triads over a given root to create different chord extensions. That can also be done by intervals and learning patterns but knowing the notes allows you to see how certain extended chords contain different triads you weren't aware of before.
Ok. So here’s an honest review of your channel here (hopefully you read it). I am a 43 year old, self confessed grumpy sod. I started following you because of the whole Rob Scam’man affair. I then moved into Guitarsoles (which I love), so by this point I thought “yes, I’ve found two kindred spirits”. Now I’ve played guitar for 30 years (with a brief decade break in between). Admittedly I’m pretty much a major/minor pentatonic player and play lead in a blues band. I’d like to think I get away with it through phrasing but have pretty recently discovered the likes of Josh Smith, Matt Schofield et al. I’m actually going to sit down and practice the things I’m learning from your lessons. So, in all, thanks for giving my old, tired two shape fingers a new lease of life. Ps Lance Benedict sucks ass. 😂
Levi Clay my pleasure mate. I’m not one for ass kissing or blowing smoke up anyones arse. I’ve wanted to incorporate some jazz/bebop type playing into my lead (and rhythm) for a while now. I think this will help, so thank YOU really. Keep up the great content of the vids.
Yes play rock, then you don't have to worry about playing over changes, one pentatonic over everything, then you can fall asleep while playing, how cool is that?

levi mate, when you're thinking about which note to play are you thinking in terms of scale degree or the actual note name?

Call me crazy but that's way closer to jazz than blues. Which is awesome, But not blues.
