A comment you spoke made me realize the meaning of the video for the first time. "Burn down a library. Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do." Africa cannot be found in a book, in facts, in intellectual knowledge. It is a place that must be experienced. And like the rest of life, words and facts can become a barrier to experiencing the incredible reality of something.
I'm 56 years old, so I've been listening to music for a while now. Honestly, I think that this is my favorite song of all time. I don't know why I love it so much. It just sounds so dang cool. The music along with the harmony of the voices gives me chills to this day, at a point in my life when I don't get near as many "chills" as I used to. Something about this song makes me feel adventurous and brave.
For the longest time, I thought the line was “I left some rains down in Africa”...had no idea what that meant. My other big misread of lyrics was what I thought was “rises like a leopardess above the Serengeti”. Actually, I like my lyric batter 😀
This group is a "supergroup". They are actually a collection of "session musicians" who, not only played a lot of the best music you heard in MANY hit songs, but they ALSO got together in this group and put out their own string of hit music. They really had a head start on most groups out there, so their catalog is pretty deep and the music is top notch.

This is a great song and made it to #1 on the Billboard charts. The first member you see behind the books singing backing vocals is Steve Lukather, lead guitarist and founding member. Steve is one of the most accomplished guitar players in the business having played on over 1,500 albums in his career. He contributed to several Michael Jackson albums including Thriller. You should definitely listen to more Toto, they're great.
His name is Steve Lukather. Quincy Jones didn’t just rely on him for session work, but the whole damn band! Toto has played on NUMEROUS albums back in the day. They were all masters of their craft. I say “were” because some of them have passed away.
I read an interview with Eddie Van Halen where he was asked what it felt like to be the world's best guitarist. He replied, "You would have to go ask Steve Lukather that question as he is the best."
This song always reminds me of my long lost Ghanaian friend. We used to escape to the rooftop of our office building during work. We'd play this song as we looked over the Los Angeles landscape, from the mountains to the sea, and planned our trip to Africa. Alas, we never made it but I have never forgotten our friendship so long ago. Joseph, I hope your life has been as magical as those days we shared as friends and I hope you remember that time as fondly as I do.
Steve Lukather on guitar & and Jeff Porcaro on drums, were two of the best at their crafts. Sadly, Jeff has passed away. He is considered by many, many of the greatest musicians, critics and fans as one of the finest and most talented drummers to ever sit behind the kit. He was not only Toto's drummer, but played on a great many amazing albums by other artists. (by the way, the band did use the name "Toto" from Dorothy's dog in "Wizard Of Oz")
This great song has a special place in my heart. I listened to this song many times while flying to Kenya during my Air Force days. I'll never forget Nairobi and Toto. Great reaction and Thanks for the journey!
This was written by the lead singer back in the 70s after watching a documentary of the droughts in Africa. And seeing many people suffering without food and water. That's what this song is about
The drummer, Jeff Porcaro died at a young 38 years of age. He has many famous acts to his credit along with all the other studio musicians that formed this band.
Your video got me a flashback to a computer game I played years ago... It's called "Firewatch". A man serves as a firewatcher. He's alone in the middle of nowhere, sitting in a firetower, watching the woods for signs of smoke and fire. Once he's on a trip, watching for signs of a kid, missed years ago. He finds a cave, enters it, goes deep inside... Then he reaches a very big cavern... In total silence, suddenly the charakter sings as loud as hell: "I BLESS THE RAINS DOWN IN AAAAAFRICAAAAA..." and an amazing echo comes back!!! It was so much fun and took me by a BIG surprise!!! Watching your video I remembered this scene and had a lot of fun again! :o)
Yes this song is a journey. Close your eyes take in the vibe and go on a melodic adventure every time. The arrangement of low register, high register vocals and backing vocals is spot on and the blend of instruments, notes, time signature and meter are off the charts. I love it every time Bobby Kimball comes in with "Gonna take a lot to drag me away from you. There's nothing that a million men ever do. I blessed the rains down I Africa. Gonna takes some to...." then when he cranks out the even higher "I blessed the rains" note during the instrumental solo.
Watch the bass player - he holds his bas very high on his body - a clear sign of enthusiasm. They also say the bassiest is always the prettiest of the band - usually true - striking. The band still exists today in parts - another song: Rosanna... All in all - gigantic!
I love this group. TON'S OF TALENT. Another fantastic voice or voices, from the era. My generation. So much talent. AND this was song of the year . And I believe Rosanna won for the year it came out. I don't have a fav from back then. They all are. Rock on!
True Fact: in January 2019, a sound installation was set up in an undisclosed location in the Namib Deseert that plays this song on a continuous loop. The installation, appropriately named "Toto Forever" is powered by solar batteries, allowing the song to be played indefinitely. The music plays out of six speakers which each sit atop individual stone plinths, all pointing in a different direction. According to the people who maintain the installation, the song is still playing to this day, two years later, with no plans to ever let it stop.
Simon and Garfunkel did perhaps the most beautiful and timely song ever, "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Paul Simon went on to eventually make "Graceland", his ode to Africa and the their beat, with Paul's impeccable songwriting, makes for a MUST HEAR for you! You would simply love it!. As did America, picking up several Grammy's, one for Album of the Year. Keep up the love!
3:45 Definitely no hate there, I'm super stoked you're the kind of listener that actually takes note of all the pieces of the recording! So many people just key in on vocals and don't listen to the arrangment of some of these great songs. So I'm effing pumped that you went back to revist the subtle flute they had in the mix there. Interesting story regarding this song - An artist in Namibia created an art installation in the middle of the desert where he set up speakers to run on solar power and the speakers just continuously play this song on a loop.
Play this song to people originally from Africa, it’s like our de facto continental anthem. I left South Africa in 91, and everyone I hear this song, I want to go back

If I'm in a "less good mood" I play the songs of Toto, and they make every time my day. These are all studio artists, and there is no tuning involved in their layers of voices. Amazing group and feel of their songs. And the songs never age. That's why Steve Porcaro started very early playing synths, Steve Luke on the guitar, one of the best guitar players like David Gilmore, Jeff Porcaro the brother of Steve with his amazing drum grooves, and Bobby Kindall with his hi pitch voice. David Hungate on the bass and the lead singer, on this song, David Paige.
there is a great video on youtube if you can find it about each individual instrumental track solo and when you hear each instrument independent of the others, your brain somehow magically fills the rest of it in and you can somehow hear the entire song in your head. its a pretty good testament to the musicianship of the band.

If I wouldn't be half planet away from US and a bit too old too, I would propose you Roxy :)... And this song is not just a classic but kinda universal...
Toto was obviously not a band that sold themselves on being fashion models. But YOU get it Ms. Rxyce. They were studio monsters who put out there own music. They played rock, but more than that. Thank you!
1979- L.A. Colosseum. Calif World Music Festival. I met the band back stage, got an autographed album. Shook hands with Guitarist Steve Lukather. the show was awesome.
I have the original album of that song. It's from the album of TOTO IV. The songs are: Rosanna, Make Believe, I Won't Hold You Back. Good For You, It's A Feeling, Afraid Of Love, Lovers In The Night, We Made It, Waiting For Your Love, and Africa. I remember when it came out when I was in high school back in 1982. TOTO was on top of the charts back then!
Great reaction from this great Toto song from '82. There are 2 good Toto songs from the late '70s "Hold the Line" and "Georgy Porgy" that are very good. '

The wild and pure beauty of the continent of Africa ... is always a great inspiration for a musician and a composer ... but first you must know , Her music inheritance .
one of my ate songs and never noticed the flute. thank you!
Peter Gabriel - In your Eyes (Secret World Live). Well worth the listen. And worth watching.
They still put on a great show!! I have seen them a few times in the last ten years or so.
My dad was never into pop music. He was born in 1940 and somehow skipped right past Elvis and the Beatles. But I remember him really loving this song!
I love your reaction, I love it that time, probably is from the time of where there's was a world helping África.
You took my back to aerobic dance done to this song
in the 90-'s. My favorite one of all times.
If I wouldn't be half planet away from US and a bit too old too, I would propose you Roxy :)... And this song is not just a classic but kinda universal...
That voice is Mr Bobby Kimball. Unreal power
Toto was obviously not a band that sold themselves on being fashion models. But YOU get it Ms. Rxyce. They were studio monsters who put out there own music. They played rock, but more than that. Thank you!
bobby kimball double tracking the chorus singing the lead vocals deserved a grammy one of the best singers of all time
Sound brings back memories of the '80s when I was in my mid to late teens and I love when songs do that because the 80s was the best time ever
THIS WOMAN IS BEAUTIFUL

Every time you post, you bless my day. Thank you ;)
Great reaction young lady!
So, so beautiful. The song is nice, too.
I enjoyed this thank you. I love Toto and there are many excellent songs by them. They did another song a long time ago called "99" it has a similar feel as "Africa". 😎👍
Rosanna and 99 are two of my favorite Toto songs.
This the BEST reaction to this song! 💯😎💯
Thanks for 👉 out the flute...I've heard this so many times never noticed it.
Bless the rains down in Africa
If you want a fun variant of this song.. Leo Morachioli did an amazing METAL cover which is just a hoot! So much fun and so well done!
Luv me some Leo !

First time watching your Reaction to anything. You seem like a person that is beatiful inside and out. Keep it up, you earned a new subscriber (in the sea of subscribers)!
That singer is the son of John Williams of Star Wars and Indiana Jones (and many others) fame. Just learned this not too long ago and wanted to share!
Think i might watch a few more of your reactions later, love the way you get lost in the music.......... And you're kinda easy on the eye too, which is always a good thing 😂
Another blast from the past you should do a reaction to is:
FOREIGNER: “I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS”
Check out Sade, sweetest taboo, the live version intro and groove is off the chart
They have so many hits. My favourites are pamela, stop loving you, anna, lea, straight for the heart,I’ll be over you, only you, without your love, hold the line, rosanna and till the end.
She already reacted to Hold The Line, Without Your Love, Out Of Love. Did you see those?
@@deborahbryan3639 no I haven’t seen those reactions yet, but i will. Thanks for telling ! 💯
recuerdo una amiga se fue a recaudar info de las especies en africa y ella colocaba esta cancion en su celular siempre
If you like african music try "Osibisa" Sunshine Day, "The Dawn" and lots more. Great band from the 70's onwards.
3:45 heard this a thousand times, never heard the flute til now... wow.
