As someone who tiled houses for five years... The cracks between tiles are called joints! And the best way to grout them is diagonally. Especially when you are wiping off the grout, this ensures you aren't taking too much out from the joints. Also, normally the cut tile would go on the bottom against the counter as sometimes it can be uneven and it's usually less noticeable. But it looks great!
I think there's also different sizes of joints, right ? Kelsay said the tile company should use spacers instead of designated scratch protectors... but that doesn't make sense if you want a different size of joint, no ?
@@meinhartfrancois Well, in this case, those tiles are almost always placed with the same joint size, but that is not the reason why it wouldn't make sense. The scratch protectors are part of the packaging process, the tiles aren't 100% cooled down, that's one of the reasons why they the protectors are necessary, you cannot just place a spacer, since it would become completely useless if it deforms with the heat. Plus, it wouldn't be cost effective, plus tile manufacturers aren't in the tool business, they don't make the spacers. It a very dumb idea, but I don't blame Kelsay, she doesn't have to know all this, and she was probably just joking around. (I worked for a tile manufacturer in Spain for many years)
The way they set up that kitchen you would be sorry to eat what they are serving. Meaning, I do not think cooking is their forte. Jaunty decorating DYI is something they do better.
Same! I just wanted to comment on that, that’s why at first I wasn’t convinced that the tiles would look good but once the shelf was up there it looked so much cleaner 🙈♥️
Some tips for next time you do tiles: wear glasses when you cut, put adhesive on both side (tile and wall) and if the surface is lustrated you can sand it a little bit for best adhesion. ( I'm not an expert but I've done multiple tile project floor and wall) The design is nice and your new studio is awesome I'm existed to see you next projects! 😊
Also I wouldn’t tile that much in one day you should have done like three rows, let it dry, then do the top two rows. That’s a lot of weight for the bottoms rows. Hence the sliding down.
They often don’t wear safety Gear cuz they’re too busy being dressed cute to show a good example of how to use tools and do DIY safely. Shame I’m addicted to watching DIY and room makeovers though.
@@Aa-ke9pp They never wear safety glasses and somehow I still hoped they would wear it for cutting TILE. ffs. Glazed ceramic is as sharp as glass when it breaks. You can hear the force that the tile breaks with. Chips can literally fly across the room. I love their show too, longtime viewer, but every episode I have an anxiety attack because they are so unsafe. It's only a matter of time before one of them is seriously injured. It's not cute, it's not funny, it's not 'relatable' . It's endangering themselves and all the inexperienced young people who watch them and emulate them. They have an actual responsibility to model safe practices.
Lihz Bailey I disagree 🤷🏼♀️ putting too much weight on a wall at once can cause the bonding mortar to pull away from the wall and create air pockets etc. If I was doing the project, I would have only done three rows at a time since they are using the tiles vertically. It’s a lot of weight.
Every episode I’m amazed at their ability to paint/saw/drill etc. in cute clothes. Like Kelseys on the floor in PANTYHOSE. Like I have to have a specific paint/DIY outfit because I’m so messy. So happy for you two! Thanks for pushing yourselves to try new things. It’s always inspiring
I think the sconces go how the were originally. Like down and then up. Edit. Yeah they definitely go how the electrician put them. The light has to face the tile not the room. The way you put them in my opinion makes them seem out of place Other than that the space looks amazing very lived in and homey yet stylish and trendy.
I agree. I think the bulb shows much more with the way Becky moved them, unless that was just the angle we were shown in the video but seeing the bulb more is not chic
Becky and Kelsey your reno videos are so aesthetically pleasing to watch! Though, I am also definitely convinced the wall lights face the way the electricians installed them. But hey if y’all like it the other way, live your best life bc that could be a look. Ultimately, if you’re happy with your kitchen space, then I’m happy for you too
I think the lights should be flipped the other way... Also when I’ve had rugs that have color that is too saturated for me I always get out the pressure washer and spray it down good for about 30 minutes making sure to get the spots when I really want the color to calm down and I let it dry in the sun. Always takes the saturation down in my experience.
I think the point of lights above a counter is for task lighting, so they should point down. Pointing up only lights the wall above and brings nothing to the space since all the fun stuff is below.
@Alessia N Now the bulbs just face out at the faces of people sitting on the stools. They should definitely face downward @ the kitchen counters. The way the electrician had them was right.
The backsplash turned that space from an 'office kitchenette' to a cozy cafe moment. It's amazing how covering the cinderblocks with the gorgeous tile made it feel bigger and more friendly!
Favorite is the shelf, tile, curtain rod hack situation Honestly I loved the previous season of loft vibes, but somehow this is even better. Way to go girls!!
I'm not sure if this has been said but I would definitely recommend wearing protective goggles or eyewear when cutting that tile and also to wear gloves when working with the grout.
i don't think they'd be able to orient them to the other position without either moving them up more or taking things down from the shelf. The arm might actually not be able to go the other way because of that shelf.
ooh and that beautiful kimono? *swoon*. I'd love to be able to rock an outfit like that, but sadly I'm too short lol . My 5'2 self cannot could neverrr
I just have to say, I woke up at 1:30 last night with allergies and anxiety and was up for three hours trying to get back to normal, and I saw you had posted this positive , productive video with such a warm and inviting outcome! It gave me a flashback to good times and hopes for the future to come. I enjoyed watching it and envisioning the things I want to do to our own renovation we are in the midst of living in. I love this season of loft vibes, it really feels like I’m making over my own space as well 😭✨ BUT! I can. not. wait for the bathroom makeover I already know it will be *chef’s kiss*
Fantastic kitchen! The splash back tiles are gorgeously warm and beautiful. Awesome job on that you girls! It's incredibly encouraging to watch you tackle things you've not done before and leave the 'mistakes' in. That is what DIYing is all about....persevering and winning!
I am constantly amazed that y’all can paint and build things in such cute clothes. I legit can’t do paint touch ups without getting it all over me and sweating profusely.
Their style is absolutely not my aesthetic at all but the diys are legit and the problem solving is insanely smart and the overall "make it how you want it" is inspiring. The videos always feel like ive been transported to a different dimension where things are just slightly off but in a positive way. Its so wierd but i love that this channel is able to cheer me up in a year like this.
The backsplash looks great with the shelf above! However, one tiny fix that could elevate it even more is if you add grout between the shelf and the tile so the finish does not have a gap and looks seamless like one whole piece!
I've definitely been using curtain rods for many years for all types of things! For example I have one as the head board of my bed... I hung a curtain rod on the wall, hung ivy type faux plants all over it hanging down and lights mixed in.. it's so dang cute. But also same thing, with S hooks for storage.
@@JillianCristina you totally should girl! And its SO cheap! You can use Christmas lights bc the wire is green so it would blend in but I'd actually found some super cute lights.. they look "vintage" and they're like large clear circle bulbs and it looks so cute. Also, I sorta snatched the idea from Arie. I was in the mall and walked by the Arie store and saw they had like a wall of greenery and lights for I guess taking photos in front of and I sorta made a version of that but cheaper!
I like seeing the serious side of you learning new skills. I actually love it! I am recently turned 60 year old separated for 4 years and wanting to keep on learning and doing. Thank you!
I love it sooo much. I probably would've taken the rug outside and just sprayed it down with tea or something to mute the pink. But painting it worked!
Becky in her faux fur vest grouting tile is a mood. Kitchen turned out great! I love the runner and all the light fixtures. Definitely a cool style in there.
Omg I was thinking this whole video how it always seems like Kelsey is doing all of the physical work and Becky is always camping hahaha. But I’m sure they split a lot of the work we don’t see as well.
Kelsey and Becky, you knocked your DIY Communal Kitchen out of the park!! I like black splash so much. I have lived in my house for 18 years and have wanted to tile it from day one. You have inspired me!
Omg I just saw your lights in a clothing store here in Germany! They have them hanging the other way around and it looks so much better! Wish I could attach a photo, I took one 🙈
Looks great! Weird note... I noticed that you placed the apples and bananas in the same basket, I recently found out that apples emit an acid that make your bananas turn brown faster.
I have ultimate respect for you for tiling that backsplash! And this is literally what I love about you guys! That you make me do things that I would have easily given up on just because it's hard for me to do. You do mistakes but that is part of the learning process! Ugh! Just love you guys
Didn't know beige could look this good: until now. Awesome job you guys! I'm waiting for that bathroom glow up and the final loft tour. Will there be an "area" left to be a "room" for you to do mock ups of spaces? Like for the seasons and different decor styles? Don't know what the future holds. This way you can do "room makeovers" and continue producing great content for your channel. You can also use it for demos. Thanks for sharing
I LOVE the shelf and rail hack!!! I'll definitely have to use that some day! This kitchen is so pretty with the warm tones, the backsplash and the 3 separate tables. Great job!
True! But let’s be real... they won’t be doing much cooking in here. I think the space will be used more as kind of like a “break room” slash community space.
I'd love to hear more about Kelsey's experience in the film industry. Were you working in the art department? That's what I'm hoping to do after I graduate!
You know what I want? An episode where they tell us all what witchcraft they use to keep from ever getting paint/grout/mastic on their clothes as they work. They are so good that if I didn't see a video of them doing all the work I would swear they had a team that actually does it. Teach me how to not be messy!!! ❤
With the pots and pans and lids at 28:32 try sliding the skillet handles through the handles on the lids, makes for a sleek look. AND you know where the matching lid is! Y'all are awesome! Love the vision board! I'd forgotten about that!
I really loved the old loft but OH BOY Kelsey and Becky are KILLING IT in the new space! ✨ plus, every single makeover (in and outside the office) is turning out amazing since they moved to a fresh new place. they are bubbling with ideas and I'm so proud (and inspired!) to see where they are now. Been a TSG fan for years now and thought that I couldn't love their content more.... I was wrong. 🧡
Great backsplash, wrong execution. The tile adhesive you used commonly called (mastic) is not suitable for painted cinder block, as it won't adhere properly which can result in grout cracks and tiles falling off. Use thinset mortar on concrete substrates, and if the substrate is painted, you will have to prime it prior to installing the tile.
You all are amazing! I’m always so inspired by the bravery and willingness to try new things. You’re continually pushing your skills, which just goes to show that we can do more than we think. Thanks for awesome videos!!
Just made myself something to eat and went on TH-cam to see what I can watch, imagine my excitement when I saw that the sorry girls posted a new video 😍😍😍
I really like your new 'loft vibes' kitchen! One note though, if your range/stove has a glass top, take care what items are hung above it. If an item falls, it could be costly to repair.
So happy and inspired by this makeover! My fiancé and I are gearing up to do things we’ve never done before in our house, like replace sinks and faucets - and boy, are we scared! TSG nailed the tile installation! Here’s to learning by doing ....
I really appreciate y'all's effort to support social distancing. Even going so far so as to sit everyone a sensible distance apart for the lunch shot. Sometimes it feels like the world is trying to rush through this without being responsible and it's heartening to see such a popular channel do their best to keep up with guidelines and encourage everyone else to do the same.
@23:30 One of the first things I had noticed at the very beginning of your video was that refrigerator door and the opening on the wrong side. I am so impressed you fixed it! Way to go!
You should do an episode in the estimated market value of your improvements to this space when you're all finished! I bet your landlord is thrilled at all the value you guys are adding. Well done! This kitchen is lovely as always.
Once my friend and I made a parody of “a whole new world” that went “a whole new roooom, a whole new place to put your stuff!” 🎶 Can’t remember the rest but we did a good chunk of the song, lol
I built shelves and installed a rod similar a underneath a few years ago. It’s a wonderful idea, I placed cook books on the shelves and hung coffee mugs and kitchen utensils on the rod.
You did a fantastic job on the backsplash and shelf/pot rack. The shelf and rod are my favourite part - I’m not a fan of keeping pots out in the open (I live in Calgary and have three animals, so dust and pet hair gets into everything). But I absolutely love the idea for plants! Especially if you want to keep the plants away from the cats! Awesome job, ladies! I love how this room turned out. Can’t wait to see how you transform the bathroom!
my favourite office makeover so far!! I was unsure about the vertical tile at first, but the second Becky said it would be perpendicular to the grain of the counter I knew it was gonna look so good!

not an acid, it's a gas! Ethylene gas (I'm a chemist ;)
"don't let one bad apple spoil the rest" also is about chemicals in apples spoiling other fruit. You can use it to ripen avocados too
Thank god I was so tired waiting to make this banana bread
K B this is a mood
Stella Ray thanks, I knew “acid” didn’t sound right.
Great job!
You NEED to put a nonslip rug pad under that rug or just not have it in the kitchen. Just imagine slipping while holding a knife or a hot pan?
True! But let’s be real... they won’t be doing much cooking in here. I think the space will be used more as kind of like a “break room” slash community space.
I love watching them film on different days because I get to see all those different outfits!
I'd love to hear more about Kelsey's experience in the film industry. Were you working in the art department? That's what I'm hoping to do after I graduate!
They talk about it a little on their podcast A Little About A Lot. Episode 2 and the one Kelsey cohosted with her boyfriend
Kelsey was a production coordinator!
You know what I want? An episode where they tell us all what witchcraft they use to keep from ever getting paint/grout/mastic on their clothes as they work. They are so good that if I didn't see a video of them doing all the work I would swear they had a team that actually does it. Teach me how to not be messy!!! ❤
Posh Spice and Boho Spice right there when Becky gets back from her trip XD
With the pots and pans and lids at 28:32 try sliding the skillet handles through the handles on the lids, makes for a sleek look. AND you know where the matching lid is! Y'all are awesome! Love the vision board! I'd forgotten about that!
The hanging baskets are incredible, wish I had those for my kitchen rail! ❤
I came to the comments looking for a link but I can't find them 😭
i am obsessed with tile and the shelf that bridges the overhead cabinetry & the herringbone tables omg !!!
I wasn't so sure about the tileing at first, but I really love it.
I love the curtain rod, lighting, and tables/ islands and the fact you Brought up the issue with the orientation of the fridge..well done ladies!
Wow! It looks fantastic! I especially love the three tables!
This sounds sooo fake
I really loved the old loft but OH BOY Kelsey and Becky are KILLING IT in the new space! ✨
plus, every single makeover (in and outside the office) is turning out amazing since they moved to a fresh new place. they are bubbling with ideas and I'm so proud (and inspired!) to see where they are now.
So excited every week! Also love how you guys have been posting more on insta
I have watched HGTV for many decades and other countless reno shows. Your loft vibe series warm my heart! So inspiring, girlies! 😘😘
Just made myself something to eat and went on TH-cam to see what I can watch, imagine my excitement when I saw that the sorry girls posted a new video 😍😍😍
The tile project turned out perfect. Love the overhead lighting but my favorite is the bar above the counter for hanging pots and pans!
I really like your new 'loft vibes' kitchen! One note though, if your range/stove has a glass top, take care what items are hung above it. If an item falls, it could be costly to repair.
New Lights, lovely, Great tables and chairs , the back splash is so perfect ! GOOD JOB ! Well Done !
So happy and inspired by this makeover! My fiancé and I are gearing up to do things we’ve never done before in our house, like replace sinks and faucets - and boy, are we scared! TSG nailed the tile installation! Here’s to learning by doing ....
TSG! Is “scary bathroom” the next episode of loft vibes?!! I’m so ready to see the transformation of that spot!!!
I wished you gone with the criss cross technic u know the one when they look like mountains
I think it's called herringbone and I agree!
I loved how the final look has slow shots and it was not super fast!! I got to really look at the amazing job y’all did!!
And now I know why I got recommended a "castle renovation" a few days ago on TH-cam 😂
@23:30 One of the first things I had noticed at the very beginning of your video was that refrigerator door and the opening on the wrong side. I am so impressed you fixed it! Way to go!
I feel like it was too late to flip the wall sconces around , because they look like they are hanging too high now...
REVOLUTIONARY!!!!
What a glorious kitchen. Those tiles really makes the space - together with the shelf above them
Becky!!! Where are those pants from??? (The green ones at the end, I've even asked in vlogs, I need those pants 😭)
I built shelves and installed a rod similar a underneath a few years ago. It’s a wonderful idea, I placed cook books on the shelves and hung coffee mugs and kitchen utensils on the rod.
"Soldier" is a name for for brick/tile runs. I know you understand the "Tall and short" part...
Is anyone else impressed by how cute they're always dressed when doing these projects? When I do home projects I look like a hot mess 😂
The outfit needs one more accessory: safety glasses.
@@lestranged Agreed, but I did see some in a few parts!
my favourite office makeover so far!! I was unsure about the vertical tile at first, but the second Becky said it would be perpendicular to the grain of the counter I knew it was gonna look so good!
