I got this exact chainsaw and a bunch of files, greases and wrenches for $30 in an auction. I find these chainsaws have a lot of complaints on hard starts and bad running. After I got myself comfortable with the parts (courtesy of your videos) these chainsaws are fine once you tune them really well. Thanks for the handy videos!

the carb is an after market carb. the original Polun carb has a different linkage that does not interfere with the housing. I have a Craftsman Saw that had the same problem and I trimmed the linkage and was able to make it not hang up at idle. I still however with an after market carb

All I can say is welcome to the club. The one I HAD was just like this, new carb and all. I could never get it to open up. When the secondary would start, it'd lean out and die. I bent linkag4es and did everything I could think of except getting out the BIG hammer or cranking the wood splitter. You are 100% on the mark. That is Amazon/eBay Chinese after market carb for Poulan. They do work well but you have to do some modifications to make it work on Poulan 42cc saw. I ended up shortening the throttle linkage on carb with pliers to prevent rubbing on rubber closing as it was causing throttle to be stuck.

I noticed the issue with the carb and as I have reviewed and played your video a couple of times I have noticed that the rod that runs thru the brass bushing @ the 8:43 mark appears that it is too straight and needs to be bent outward a bit to clear the rubber seal and the cover a bit.
but I did see one gentleman (James Hedrick) state that it is an after market carb and I have to agree; however I think this adjustment may work aside from replacing the carb with an original one.

Great video, just the right amount of detail for somebody seriously trying to fix their Poulan Pro chainsaw - liked and subbed! I have the bigger brother Poulan Pro PP4218AV saw and finally got it to run again after a thorough cleaning of the Zama C1M-W26 carburetor and replacing the airhead body assembly (broken plastic arm), new fuel lines and fuel filter. Oiler isn’t working, I am waiting on a new one to arrive. Question on a compression tester: Several YT commenters on other channels have said the Schrader valve should be closer to the engine cylinder and not at the other end of the hose next to the gauge. Other than needing to pull the starter cord several more times to pressure up the hose, what difference would it make where the valve is located? Anyway, looks like you have a LOT of great fix-it videos. Thanks for sharing them!

@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE hi house garage so I got the chainsaw back together and started it up and it worked just fine I just needed to adjust the carb a little bit and then I cut some wood with and it cut fine and then I shut it off and then when I came back to give it a cold start it wouldn’t start and I only changed one of the fuel lines the one going from the primer bulb to the carb and when I pressed the bulb sometimes it would stick inwards like it wouldn’t come back to it original shape and then when I would prime it the bulb would fill up a quarter of the way and then sometimes all the way and my dad told me that it might be that the fuel line that we replaced isn’t sealed around the carb properly but I would like to know what you think so let me know if you know what the problem could be thanks

Mine started after replacing the fuel lines, idled high like in the video and died as soon as I pulled the throttle. Complete junk. It's sitting by the curb for trash pickup.

Once I discovered those first few obvious mistakes I wouldn’t trust anything else to be correct, even if at first glance it appeared okay. That especially goes for what appeared to be a new, replacement carb. So many lacking knowledge, patience or attention to detail throw a new carb at a machine, and in this case it’s consistent with the other things. I would not have assumed the replacement was the correct one and I suspect that is the reason the original cover and inside edges were abraded and cut away - the new carb is the wrong one for this saw. This may explain why the original gasket was incorrect on this carb.

    • @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
      @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE  ปีที่แล้ว +1

you are correct, the first few mistakes should have clued me in, that things were very wrong, from the beginning.

  • @dagorithe

What size fuel lines did you use in replacing the old ones? I have the 42cc version; it looks just like the one you fixed. I can’t complain too much as it was reconditioned when I got it nearly 12 years ago.
Mine is giving me a little trouble staying running. I have pulled the carb off and was dirty; the metering diaphragm appeared soft enough to not replace. I think I need to change the fuel primer bulb, so I’ll change the filter and lines as well.

Poulan is the most troublesome, unreliable saw on the market. Husqvarna should be ashamed of themselves for producing it. Pay a few dollars more and get an echo or a stihl.

I had to cut the linkage on the tip where it was hitting the plastic cover. Break out the Dremel, baby!
The Chinese replacement carbs apparently all have this issue; Amazon shows several images of people who had to do the same. Very poor craftsmanship.

What with all the shoddy maintenance issues isn't it conceivable that the previous owner bought the wrong replacement carb? You shouldn't have to cut away seals and housing to make the machine operate properly.🤔🤕

That's the classic sign of an air leak when you have a high idle like that
Still way too lean I will double check those rubber boots that you replaced for air leakage.

Unless it is a high quality name brand chainsaw it is not worth fixing even when free. You are fixing something that is not worth it but for your own knowledge.
In 2023 I bought off Craigslist two saws new in box never used $80 each. A Poulan 42cc 18" & a Walmart black max 50cc 20" , both never used were gifts they didn't want.
