I am about to try my hand my first species only shrimp tank. I turned to TH-cam and so glad I found your channel. You are a wealth of information. Thanks 🤗.
Hi Reggie! I really appreciate the feedback. It makes me very happy to hear that! Good luck with your first species only shrimp tank! I'm sure it will bring you lots of joy 😊
Shrimps are fun to have and I love to watch them. Mine breed a lot in my community tanks without any special care or specific foods. Good video and keep up the good work
Great video! You've got some really nice tanks going! I love Shrimp! I've noticed that my cherrys have slowly found their way back to natural types in the tanks that I haven't bothered to maintain strong colour lines. Interestingly I occasionally get a pure black or brown one come through as well which is always cool.
Thank you! I absolutely love when a pure black shrimp pops up. They look so cool. If you don't mind the odd colours, you can always add a few more shrimp to the tank. I have found the yellow gene to also be quite dominant.
@@ellies_exotics Interesting! I've been looking at getting Yellows and Blues next, just trying to find a dcent local breeder. I find getting them from local places where they are used to the tap water is the best for survival rates. Some of the online ones can be a bit hit and miss. They are really fussy with water parameters.
@@IndoorEcosystem yeah that's unfortunately always a risk. Do you drip acclimate your new shrimp? If you slowly introduce them to your own water parameters, your survival rate should be decent. I drip acclimate new shrimp for 2 hours.
@@ellies_exotics Yeah I always drip them in over a few hours. Usually no less than 45 mins if im just doing home tank transfers. Shrimp are funny sometimes though. I recently cleaned out my canister filter and found 3 shrimp having the time of their life (happens sometimes). I just dropped them straight into a totally different tank (with my betta) as an experiment to see if he would eat them. Oddly enough they all survived with out any acclimation. Plus he hasn't even eaten them yet which is a pretty nice surprice. He might actually be a gentle soul.
@@IndoorEcosystem I also dropped some of my prolific breeder shrimp in with my one Betta and he doesn't touch them 🤣 I've now put shrimp in all my Betta tanks.
If the gene for Cherry Red is truly recessive, then the color can't show unless only the recessive genes are present. If this is the case, then that same shrimp showing the Cherry Red color can't have the dominant "wild" color. So how does mixing various colors result in eventual "wild" colored shrimp, if all the non-wild colored varieties are recessive gene based? The genetics are not nearly as simple as the simple dominant/recessive gene chart would show. Do I have this right?
There are things I don't understand. If I have a population of reds, which have been red for several generations and each time selected in such a way as to eliminate the grey ones, normally I only have the red recessive gene and not at all the dominant gray gene in the gene pool. If I put them with similarly selected blue shrimp, why would the offspring have gray gene? It's as if the two recessive genes end up canceling each other out. Is it possible to Is it in fact a co-recessiveness?
It is likely that there are a handful of genes that control color in shrimp. I forget the number off hand but human eye color is controlled by ~7 genes. I think evidence for shrimp color being controlled by numerous genes is that from what I have seen you get some cool varieties of wildtype/color as the gene pools get mixed. So the gene that controls 'red' might not be the same that controls 'blue.'
Not as beautiful as she is! Oh and her voice is so calming and soothing to listen to, I rather listen to it all day rather than the sounds of the ocean 😊
I haven't had a skittles tank, but I have mixed the same coloured shrimp from different breeders to give more genetic variation to avoid inbreeding or at least limit it.
I'd like to know what the fish is in this video. Is it a Borneo sucker? I want to add some fish to my shrimp tanks but don't want any fry or shrimp eaten. Have you any suggestions?
Hi Jack, I believe you're referring to the Ottocinclus catfish? They are 100% herbivores and won't harm any shrimplets or fry. I have them in all my shrimp tanks 🙂
From my personal experience I would say yes. The brown ones seem to be much hardier than the colored ones. But I'm not sure if it's been scientifically proven.
I hate killing Shrimps. I cull my Shrimps by giving them away. I also put the cull Shrimps in another aquarium, so that they can live out their lives in another tank. Shrimps don’t live for very long anyway. You are easy on the eyes. I enjoy watching you and you voice is a sultry dreamy level, so thank you for sharing.
I never kill my cull shrimp. They get their own tank (which is why it became a Skittles tank) to live out their lives in peace. PS: I'm glad others don't find my voice as annoying as I do. Thanks for the comment!

When I set up my tank, I will try mixing yellow and blues to see what will pop up :D Thanks for the video! Cheers from Brazil
Thank you for the comment! And enjoy your new tank once it's ready! They are fascinating to watch 😁

Thanks Johann! I agree, they are a lot of fun to watch and fairly easy to keep once you get the hang of it. I appreciate the comment!
Learning so much from you as I have just started keeping shrimp, namely super red cherry and orange sakura neocaradinas. Your videos are outstanding. 👍

The best video about!!! Thank you!!!🦐👍🦐
Very well done.
I just started shrimp tank. I already have berried shrimp! Mixing red, blue, yellow and green in one tank. Also have ghost shrimp. Love them.

Hi, would the shrimp be hardier if it returns to original brown form ?
From my personal experience I would say yes. The brown ones seem to be much hardier than the colored ones. But I'm not sure if it's been scientifically proven.
Based! It's my favorite anti skittles video ever.
