@@monkeplaysgames7049 there was some permanent muscle loss - i can walk and use my arms and legs, but fingers is tricky. so tricky i went and bought a fight stick actually, controllers give me massive hand cramps unfortunately

There's been a lot of "how to pick your main" videos for Tekken 8, but they've all been pretty boilerplate. As a newcomer, it's nice to have a video that goes over different characters and actually says something.
tekken is not an easy fighting games. TMM goes over them in 8 minute but trust me... That is only the basic and that is not the full potential of the character but TMM will give you the basic to build on... Learning the In depth of a character will take like 30 minuites to 1 hour of explaining depending on which character and the game is very new so there always something new coming up.
Great list. What I’ll say is if you love an advanced character, play them. That goes for every fighting game. Just accept it’s going to be slower to start winning and getting good. Best time to start was 10 years ago but that’s impossible next best time is now. The reality is you’re going to have to learn fundamentals whoever you play. I see people say to learn basics with one character and then switch but I personally believe this is wrong, play the character that’s going to make you keep playing the game, the one you like, the one that fits YOU. I know it’s not Tekken but I’ve seen so many Ryu players, playing like psychopaths because they should have picked an aggressive rushdown but were told he’s the beginner.
This is the truth, most people have no clue what they're doing in low-mid ranks so even if the character is super high in execution like Lee, Kazuya etc... you will win games by just doing some of their stronger basic moves or even if you execute slower than optimal difficult moves its not a big deal because most of the time it will land anyway.. Most games you lose will be because you lack fundamentals or got knowledge checked which is frustrating but that's how people learn
That's pretty generic bad advice. Learning the basics with a straightforward character is always better than trying to learn some advanced character who has completely different gameplay, which is also why a lot of people get stuck in lower ranks for years. They skip the basics and just get their ass beat by people who know the basics of the game. If you have fun, I guess you do you. Your advice isn't terrible and I'm not sitting on it, but it's just not good either.

Sure this may be the “best way” but it’s also terrible for player retention. Fundamentally these games are meant to be fun, none of us are getting paid for it, why make it feel like homework? Also some hard characters are hard because they’re unique, learning Ryu will mean fuck all if you’re trying to play Dhalsim. He just moves and plays so differently. The opposite can be true as well, “harder characters” can be very fundamentals based like the mishimas for example, you have to get solid fundamentals, but if you pick an easier character, who may be easier because they allow you to win with less fundamentals, or even no fundamentals because they have several tool to skip neutral, guess what ? You aren’t learning good fundamentals, you’re just trying to win.

For Reina, I feel like they struck gold with her design. If she truly is "I will mash you to death" while also being super complex, you have a character that can shine in all levels, newbies (me included) will be happy to pick her up, get some wins and when going gets tough they will have to naturally improve. I am ready to give my time to learn her moveset. If that fails, Asuka will be there for me I guess :D
I was going to pick lee as they just murd3red law's gameplay in this game but more and more I get interested on her. I also main kazuya, so maybe she'll be a middle ground for me. I think I'll enjoy maining her, let's see

Fahkumram was broken at every level, even being banned from being played in a majority of Pakistan's tournaments. Anyone could take advantage of his countless built in mixups, insane mobility with small hitbox especially when sidestepping, and absurd range.
People don't talk about it a lot but you're so right about King struggling with evasion. Some characters just go under his high hitboxes if you don't play really tight and force them to respect gou.
I love how some characters have 3 sentences as their fighting style and then: Super Spy, Ancient Assassination Techniques (?), Law = Martial arts, as if he didn't have an estabilished one already. Very funky BIOs by the developers
I haven't bought the game yet, but I was also an LC main... Is Azucena actually like LC? I'm unsure if I want to buy the game right now because looking at the roster I don't know if there's anyone on there atm that I'd actually want to play :(
I remember the first time I played Tekken 3 on console at a friend's house over 20 years ago, when I finally had time to choose a characters without worrying about time limit, I saw Paul and thought he looked cool so I chose him, that was pretty much the beginning and end of my process of picking a main in Tekken.
I picked Jin, because I thought the fire on his pants looked cool and his roundhouse to triple spin kick was really good against the AI. Of course, when he completely changed styles in 4, I was devastated and confused.
Lee was my first and main in T7, off a vague memory of trying him after getting tired of playing King vs AI on my PSP while stuck in a hospital. I was still a super casual and bad player. I managed to get to Tekken God (potentially more if I didnt get so stressed playing ranked, lol) . It may be tough, but dont feel intimiated if a character is advanced, it's very rewarding. I had basically no competetive fighting game experience when I started, which means anyone can achieve the same if you want it
I main Lee too and I see everywhere that his slide got nerfed, but to me its a huge buff.. being full crouch +frames after hitting from the other side of the screen is really good.. b33 natural is good too.
seeing you on that bandai namco eu channel was amazing. i picked up tekken again after years of not playing because i found my old ps2 and when i searched for some guides you popped up. you made tekken feel accessible instead of it being so overwhelming. gg's

Lili is my second main so ill go with her for the time being but i might try other characters but once Anna is revealed as DLC im definitely maining her as i did since the begining in Tekken 1
it makes me sad Anna isn't in the main roster anymore too, she wasn't my main in any game b4 but i always loved doing the arcade mode with her and Nina and seeing their rivalry

Unfortunately it's true...In terms of design, he looks the best in my opinion and also he's got plenty of new cool moves with the exception of some devil flips he's doing but he's so easy to play which really takes out the fun from the character for me.

I just had to stop the video to give appreciation to what SWE said in the intro. Picking a character that looks cool to you to start with is always the proper thing to do. I do it every new fighting game I get and think others should too because you'll have a lot more fun if you do. I just want to call out people that don't do this though. Everyone that hops on a new fighting game and immediately asks the question "who's good in this game?" or "where's the tier list" and picks their character based off of that I don't respect unless your aim is to go to National and International tournaments. You're not getting on the game to actually enjoy it and have fun at that point imho.
Rooflemonger among others makes vids that promotes that mentality but very few say pick who u like...as for people that want to pick based upon their strength, u can't really blame people for wanting their character that they like to also be good. Think of sf5 ryu until v-shift...
@@TheFightingGentleman Not knowledgeable about SFV but I am more so knowledgeable about 6 since I've got many hours in it. I get what you mean however my thing is people only looking for good characters and only playing them because they're like top 5 in a game. There's plenty of people I see play JP and Ken specifically cuz they're like top 3. I don't blame anyone for wanting the character they play to be good but all I'm saying is don't immediately go for that and only that cuz its lame in my opinion.

And that that doesn't matter if you're a good player pushing the character above the basics. That's why everyone always says tier lists only matter for the pro ranks/actual tourneys

Excited to get to play Tekken 8 tonight. I already plan on playing Reina, Leroy, Lee, maybe Claudio, I enjoyed playing him in the demo so actually getting a chance to train with him will be cool, zafina seems interesting, and so does Victor. I foresee big training montages in future.

Jin (The main), Devil Jin, Lars, (maybe Leo too?) is probably the lineup but man I wanna play so many characters, Jun, Hworang, Asuka, Victor, Reina, Raven, Leroy, Kuma and maybe even Bryan and Yoshi everyone just looks so awesome to play it's insane, I'm not sleeping tomorrow. Jin has been and always will be that guy for me, obligated to main him, no matter his changes he's the character i will always main in tekken.
As a hwoarang main who knows how annoying he can be i genuinely appreciate your honesty on him, alot of people tend to dowplay the character due to his annoyance
I always played Eddy and Lee but decided with a new game it's time to learn a new character and finally (hopefully) git gud, so I'll be playing raven in T8 and spending a lot of time in training mode lol 😄

I totally disagree with mainman, getting xiaoyu to work beyond the basics took many days. Interrupting xiaoyu is much easier than playing her and i never had difficulty beating her. Same with learning flowcharts, after you use a tactic two times, you need to switch it up. Its not that easy.
Thanks main man. I was in a dark place finding a character. I used Zaffina and Xiaoyu and often felt something was not right. Im new to tekken and like you said, they are cheese characters ( i didnt know ) and i feel im not properly learning tekken with them. People in purple rank start to counter my cheese and i felt puzzled. I looked at your list to try and find myself a good fundamental character to restart my tekken journey in a healthy way and learn back from the start
I really like Jin in this game. I’ve been playing tekken since tekken 3, and I’ve really dove into the competitive aspect of tekken since tekken 6. My 3 mains have been King, Bryan, and Jin. It took me a while to master Jin but when I did he was incredibly rewarding. I’m pretty good at executing his more difficult inputs and I feel like I can play Jin at a pretty high level these days. I for one actually like that they made Jin a little easier to play. I love that he has one button electrics now and his moveset being simplified for me has made him significantly more fun to play (he was really fun already it’s just now you don’t have to work as hard). I feel like the only negative about it is you really can’t argue that as a jin main you have better execution than any other players. But that doesn’t matter to me and that doesn’t mean his high level execution has been taken out. You can absolutely play Jin the same way by using high level inputs. It’s just now you have the extra option of going into breaking step with easy electrics and I for one have been loving mixing the two actions in game.
Not that armor King was easy to play, but having those traditional tools in a move list made all the difference sometimes. Brian's complete lack of traditional tools in Tekken makes him extremely difficult to play in regular situations. You constantly have to be out thinking and rethinking everything that you do. I noticed that the most when I spent some time learning armor king
Tekken 8 is bringing in a lot of new Tekken players, including me, havent played Tekken since T5 came out. Making Jin easier to use makes sense. He's catches the eyes of new players
Rather than analysing a character which is pretty cool btw in terms of the breakdown you've shown here, the way I pick my mains might be a bit weird. I pick characters that resonate my inner personality - aggression. I need characters that give me the oomph factor, with move sets that looks aggressive rather than just light kicks and punches. This is why all the Jack robots are my mains across Tekken games. So in Tekken 7, I mained Jack-7 and brought him to online matches more than any of my other mains. So in Tekken 7, my main-main is Jack-7, while my sub-mains are the Mishimas/Kazamas (Heihachi, Kazuya, Asuka and Devil Jin, normal Jin I actually find a bit harder to grasp surprisingly), as well as Xiaoyu as some of her moves are pretty aggressive compare to how she was in earlier games. So overall, you could analyse the characters before choosing one or a few more to be your mains, but there are many other ways to choose some, could be the one I mentioned (characters that resonate your inner personality), looks, command inputs that look easier than others, or just plain random such as easy to button mash if you are still new to Tekken games.
My mains in Tekken are Raven, Hwoarang and Jin. I like mainly Raven because he's very unique and authentic, and because he resemble Naruto characters in his unorthodox fighting style approach. We need diversity in the category of fighting styles, so Raven it's a very good all-rounder authentic character exemple in my opinion. My first Tekken that introduced me to the Tekken series was Tekken 3 and my mains there was Hwoarang and Jin, fast forward a couple of years and when Tekken 4 arrived, my mains there was still Hwoarang and Jin, and Christie or Eddy. But when the Masterpiece Tekken 5 arrived, Raven has always be my trump card and my first main of the Tekken Series, follow by Hwoarang, Jin and Christie or Eddy. So all of these characters that I mention are considered OG staple characters of the Tekken Franchise by many Tekken Veterans. 🤷🏻♂️☯️
I find myself wanting to play so many characters. I main Steve, but I'm looking around and going "omg, everyone is cool now". Bryan has always been sick, but it looks a little easier to get plus frames going now. Jun looks easy but also egregious, might be fun. Claudio same jam but the single hit nature of him is appealing. Reina having a df2 pushes me into wanting to play a Mishima finally, it's a nice safety blanket while getting used to electrics. It's just so cool to see everyone play so interesting
I go with Xiaoyu, simply because I played her most in the last Tekken game I ever owned which was Tekken Tag Tournament on PS2 launch. That was an age before guides and training tools and she was the one, I just figured out some good combos on my own, that carried me to victory over all my friends, that knew even less about fighting game fundamentals.
An aspect missing about Yoshi is his Freestyle Potential. Yeah we lab a lot of flowcharts, but the real magic happens when you just remember certain stance transition moves, a couple of ways of how to get into those moves, how to transition out without breaking the mix and then just going at it. When you get into that "flow", how the fck is the opponent supposed to guess what you are going to do next, if you are making it up as it happens. But you are at the risk of being launch punished for this a lot, so this is where as TMM said, the flash comes in. Or you read the opponent trying to interrupt and launch them instead. Its really fun and organic, the types of matches you can have with a yoshimitsu that knows his whole movelist and transitions i think.
I thought that we were going to see TMM talk positively about every character, including Xiaoyu for once LOL. Instead a 5 minute tirade about how people who play her don't really know Tekken and how the best part of her is seeing someone beat her. Well I guess we would never recommend her to people looking to pick their main anyway... considering you do have to be absolutely *monstrous* at Tekken to main her effectively. Those "flow charts" take monumental amounts of labbing and calm and composed execution, absolutely nothing is free about Xiaoyu. No abusable and brainless gimmicks like Jin d+2, Bryan QCB+1, Feng 3+4 in heat, etc.
I was hoping for an explanation about Leo. "Will anyone even go to this part of the video?" Yikes. I know they are an all-rounder, can you give literally anything else? Good info on other characters, it's just some characters definitely got better explanations than others. Can really tell where biases/experience is.
Yea, it’s like he still hasn’t grasp the concept of those characters. Some characters can simply oppress you with big plus on block moves and hard hitting 50-50s. Others don’t have that luxury and have to read their opponents while in the negative frames. Having an opponent “steal their turn” seems to trigger him if it’s not done with a basic sidestep lol. For some reason he keeps assuming everytime that happens, it’s because of a pre-planned flow chart 😂 How he omits Feng when he does the exact thing is also pretty funny, but I guess he’s masculine enough to get a pass

I love King there is no character that will ever make me drop him other than Kiryu. People call us cheap but when 30% of the cast can just back away it’s tough lol. Leo in particular is a nightmare to deal with for me

I'm pretty new to Tekken and I went straight into Kazuya only because I play a lot of him in smash lol

I remember the first time I played Tekken 3 on console at a friend's house over 20 years ago, when I finally had time to choose a characters without worrying about time limit, I saw Paul and thought he looked cool so I chose him, that was pretty much the beginning and end of my process of picking a main in Tekken.
I picked Jin, because I thought the fire on his pants looked cool and his roundhouse to triple spin kick was really good against the AI. Of course, when he completely changed styles in 4, I was devastated and confused.

Lee was my first and main in T7, off a vague memory of trying him after getting tired of playing King vs AI on my PSP while stuck in a hospital. I was still a super casual and bad player.
I managed to get to Tekken God (potentially more if I didnt get so stressed playing ranked, lol) . It may be tough, but dont feel intimiated if a character is advanced, it's very rewarding. I had basically no competetive fighting game experience when I started, which means anyone can achieve the same if you want it
I main Lee too and I see everywhere that his slide got nerfed, but to me its a huge buff.. being full crouch +frames after hitting from the other side of the screen is really good.. b33 natural is good too.

Lili is my second main so ill go with her for the time being but i might try other characters but once Anna is revealed as DLC im definitely maining her as i did since the begining in Tekken 1

Unfortunately it's true...In terms of design, he looks the best in my opinion and also he's got plenty of new cool moves with the exception of some devil flips he's doing but he's so easy to play which really takes out the fun from the character for me.

I just had to stop the video to give appreciation to what SWE said in the intro. Picking a character that looks cool to you to start with is always the proper thing to do. I do it every new fighting game I get and think others should too because you'll have a lot more fun if you do.
I just want to call out people that don't do this though. Everyone that hops on a new fighting game and immediately asks the question "who's good in this game?" or "where's the tier list" and picks their character based off of that I don't respect unless your aim is to go to National and International tournaments. You're not getting on the game to actually enjoy it and have fun at that point imho.
Rooflemonger among others makes vids that promotes that mentality but very few say pick who u like...as for people that want to pick based upon their strength, u can't really blame people for wanting their character that they like to also be good. Think of sf5 ryu until v-shift...

I get what you mean however my thing is people only looking for good characters and only playing them because they're like top 5 in a game. There's plenty of people I see play JP and Ken specifically cuz they're like top 3. I don't blame anyone for wanting the character they play to be good but all I'm saying is don't immediately go for that and only that cuz its lame in my opinion.

And that that doesn't matter if you're a good player pushing the character above the basics. That's why everyone always says tier lists only matter for the pro ranks/actual tourneys

Excited to get to play Tekken 8 tonight. I already plan on playing Reina, Leroy, Lee, maybe Claudio, I enjoyed playing him in the demo so actually getting a chance to train with him will be cool, zafina seems interesting, and so does Victor. I foresee big training montages in future.

Jin (The main), Devil Jin, Lars, (maybe Leo too?) is probably the lineup but man I wanna play so many characters, Jun, Hworang, Asuka, Victor, Reina, Raven, Leroy, Kuma and maybe even Bryan and Yoshi everyone just looks so awesome to play it's insane, I'm not sleeping tomorrow.

I totally disagree with mainman, getting xiaoyu to work beyond the basics took many days. Interrupting xiaoyu is much easier than playing her and i never had difficulty beating her.
Same with learning flowcharts, after you use a tactic two times, you need to switch it up. Its not that easy.
From a few videos I've seen he really hates her because of her cheesiness, so he is probably a bit biased about her
Thanks main man. I was in a dark place finding a character. I used Zaffina and Xiaoyu and often felt something was not right. Im new to tekken and like you said, they are cheese characters ( i didnt know ) and i feel im not properly learning tekken with them. People in purple rank start to counter my cheese and i felt puzzled. I looked at your list to try and find myself a good fundamental character to restart my tekken journey in a healthy way and learn back from the start

I really like Jin in this game. I’ve been playing tekken since tekken 3, and I’ve really dove into the competitive aspect of tekken since tekken 6. My 3 mains have been King, Bryan, and Jin. It took me a while to master Jin but when I did he was incredibly rewarding. I’m pretty good at executing his more difficult inputs and I feel like I can play Jin at a pretty high level these days. I for one actually like that they made Jin a little easier to play. I love that he has one button electrics now and his moveset being simplified for me has made him significantly more fun to play (he was really fun already it’s just now you don’t have to work as hard). I feel like the only negative about it is you really can’t argue that as a jin main you have better execution than any other players. But that doesn’t matter to me and that doesn’t mean his high level execution has been taken out. You can absolutely play Jin the same way by using high level inputs. It’s just now you have the extra option of going into breaking step with easy electrics and I for one have been loving mixing the two actions in game.

Not that armor King was easy to play, but having those traditional tools in a move list made all the difference sometimes. Brian's complete lack of traditional tools in Tekken makes him extremely difficult to play in regular situations. You constantly have to be out thinking and rethinking everything that you do. I noticed that the most when I spent some time learning armor king

Rather than analysing a character which is pretty cool btw in terms of the breakdown you've shown here, the way I pick my mains might be a bit weird. I pick characters that resonate my inner personality - aggression. I need characters that give me the oomph factor, with move sets that looks aggressive rather than just light kicks and punches. This is why all the Jack robots are my mains across Tekken games. So in Tekken 7, I mained Jack-7 and brought him to online matches more than any of my other mains.
So in Tekken 7, my main-main is Jack-7, while my sub-mains are the Mishimas/Kazamas (Heihachi, Kazuya, Asuka and Devil Jin, normal Jin I actually find a bit harder to grasp surprisingly), as well as Xiaoyu as some of her moves are pretty aggressive compare to how she was in earlier games.
So overall, you could analyse the characters before choosing one or a few more to be your mains, but there are many other ways to choose some, could be the one I mentioned (characters that resonate your inner personality), looks, command inputs that look easier than others, or just plain random such as easy to button mash if you are still new to Tekken games.
My mains in Tekken are Raven, Hwoarang and Jin. I like mainly Raven because he's very unique and authentic, and because he resemble Naruto characters in his unorthodox fighting style approach. We need diversity in the category of fighting styles, so Raven it's a very good all-rounder authentic character exemple in my opinion. My first Tekken that introduced me to the Tekken series was Tekken 3 and my mains there was Hwoarang and Jin, fast forward a couple of years and when Tekken 4 arrived, my mains there was still Hwoarang and Jin, and Christie or Eddy. But when the Masterpiece Tekken 5 arrived, Raven has always be my trump card and my first main of the Tekken Series, follow by Hwoarang, Jin and Christie or Eddy. So all of these characters that I mention are considered OG staple characters of the Tekken Franchise by many Tekken Veterans. 🤷🏻♂️☯️

I find myself wanting to play so many characters. I main Steve, but I'm looking around and going "omg, everyone is cool now". Bryan has always been sick, but it looks a little easier to get plus frames going now. Jun looks easy but also egregious, might be fun. Claudio same jam but the single hit nature of him is appealing. Reina having a df2 pushes me into wanting to play a Mishima finally, it's a nice safety blanket while getting used to electrics. It's just so cool to see everyone play so interesting

I go with Xiaoyu, simply because I played her most in the last Tekken game I ever owned which was Tekken Tag Tournament on PS2 launch. That was an age before guides and training tools and she was the one, I just figured out some good combos on my own, that carried me to victory over all my friends, that knew even less about fighting game fundamentals.
An aspect missing about Yoshi is his Freestyle Potential.
Yeah we lab a lot of flowcharts, but the real magic happens when you just
remember certain stance transition moves, a couple of ways of how to get
into those moves, how to transition out without breaking the mix and then
just going at it.
When you get into that "flow", how the fck is the opponent supposed to guess
what you are going to do next, if you are making it up as it happens. But you
are at the risk of being launch punished for this a lot, so this is where as TMM
said, the flash comes in. Or you read the opponent trying to interrupt and launch
them instead. Its really fun and organic, the types of matches you can have with
a yoshimitsu that knows his whole movelist and transitions i think.

I thought that we were going to see TMM talk positively about every character, including Xiaoyu for once LOL. Instead a 5 minute tirade about how people who play her don't really know Tekken and how the best part of her is seeing someone beat her.
Well I guess we would never recommend her to people looking to pick their main anyway... considering you do have to be absolutely *monstrous* at Tekken to main her effectively. Those "flow charts" take monumental amounts of labbing and calm and composed execution, absolutely nothing is free about Xiaoyu. No abusable and brainless gimmicks like Jin d+2, Bryan QCB+1, Feng 3+4 in heat, etc.

Yea, it’s like he still hasn’t grasp the concept of those characters. Some characters can simply oppress you with big plus on block moves and hard hitting 50-50s. Others don’t have that luxury and have to read their opponents while in the negative frames. Having an opponent “steal their turn” seems to trigger him if it’s not done with a basic sidestep lol. For some reason he keeps assuming everytime that happens, it’s because of a pre-planned flow chart 😂
How he omits Feng when he does the exact thing is also pretty funny, but I guess he’s masculine enough to get a pass
