Banish Ammonia Taste: How to Remove Imperfect Flavors from Cigars

- Everything about cigars is designed to produce one thing - an experience. The growing, curing, sorting, fermentation, aging, rolling, and every other part of the cigar making process is aimed at producing a particular flavor profile in a hand crafted blend. But what is an aficionado to do when a cigar's flavor is tainted by an imperfection, like ammonia?
It's true that ammonia is a naturally occurring part of the leaf growing process. But it doesn't mean that anyone is stuck with ammonia flavor notes in a cigar. In this video, I'm sitting down with Brian, factory owner at Cavalier Cigars to talk about the process of creating a clean cigar experience. And what cigar lovers can do if that nasty ammonia taste ends up in the cigars in the home humidor.

Tim, I have the cigar medic to check humidity. It has taken the guessing away completely.
Thank you. We really appreciate the feedback.
Tim, Brian was awesome! Bring him back some more!
I'm new to cigars, but I learned that smoking one too fast can really ruin the flavor. Yes, I've had cigars go strong ammonia on occasion. Most times I can save it by slowing way, way down and maybe a purge now and then. I continue to be surprised at how important the smokers technique is to getting good flavor from a cigar.
That's right! Most of the time i like to give a 2 minute rest between puffs. Really helps keep thing cool and tasty. Every cigar is different though, sometimes i run into a stick that wants to be smoked faster, sometimes slower. Just gotta listen to the cigar🎉❤
2 you should puff on average once 2 times a minute if you are waiting 2 mins your cigar is always trying to combust @anthonybrakus5280
If that doesn’t work you can also purge it and it should help
Thank your for covering this, I had a hell of a time figuring it out when I first started smoking cigars. I dropped my humidity down and boom the ammonia was gone in a couple weeks. I also think smoking a cigar too fast and getting it too hot can cause some ammonia off flavors too.
Good tips. If I find a cigar is a bit funky I take them out of the cellophane and let them rest at 65 degrees.
Happy wife, happy life! Same is true for cigars! Treat them well. GREAT INFO!😊
I have found that “dry-boxing” helps if you have over humidified cigars. I have been thinking about dropping down to 65% bóveda packs instead of 69%. I live in Nevada so I assumed I would need more humidity… awesome video.
This was a great video. I have not had this problem myself, but I'm sure I will eventually.
Great information guys.
This video makes me miss Bradley… 😭RIP Brad
What a great video!
That was wonderful I really enjoyed that, thanks Guys. 😊
Dream. Early, early stages of starting my own and man, to be able to be in the factory constantly would be so amazing
Good info Guys, thanks!!!
For a sec I thought it was Skinny Steve Saka 😂
Bet me to it
Awesome info.
Some cigars I get come with recommended 3 days in humidor. My personal experience is 60 to 90 days. But I have smoked them right off the truck and had no problems
Great info !!!!
Had a Blue in Green the other day was a complete ammonia bomb!
I found this with the Jaime Garcia Succesor Sumatra. I feel it will taste better with age.
On my way to my favorite smoke shop 💨💨💨
Could taking the cello off help with bringing the humidity of the cigar up faster?
My Raching humidor an amonia removal feature. It turns on randomly so I assume it had detected some amonia. I keep my cigars at 64% and no issues
I work in a cigar lounge where they spray some sort of fragrance in the ventilation. All of the cigars in the humidor now have the taste of perfume, and it overpowers any natural taste of the cigars.
Holy cow where? So I know to avoid it
@@charliehill6428 that’s not good
Aganorsa supreme made me sick. Smoked half of it. Tasted like cat pee. Later found a trend of those cigars being under fermented and have ammonia flavor. Left me feeling burned!
Cavalier is good Cigars.👍
So an acrylic humidor with a pack of baking soda and a low RH boveda or a desiccant packet to get the stank out of a stogie.
No! That will suck out all the moisture too quickly. They'll be cracked and dry.
I’m curious would dry boxing for 24 hours fix the ammonia issues?
Cigarette companies add ammonia to their tobacco to make the smoke less acidic allowing nicotine through cell membrane walls to make the cigarette more addictive.
I recently bought a box of well known top rated manufacturer (#2 cigar of the year) and threw up after two draws. I thought at first it was me, but the second cigar caused the same reaction. I dissected the second cigar and sure enough, smelled like cat pee.
I returned the box to where I bought it, and a clerk was chosen to be the guinea pig. He could not get past the second draw.
Can a second fermentation occur from misting tobacco leaves prior to rolling? Causing ammonia from a second fermentation
Keep my Humidity around 65 to 68
If it's not done and ready manufacturers shouldn't be doing that if they want to keep customers. I think this I s some the reason new brands fail.
Its like watching steve saka junior
My cigars would always go nasty the final third. I've noticed the last several months it hasn't been happening at all. I can't think of anything I'm doing differently, I wish I knew the answer. I suspect it might have to do with me taking a cigar out of the humidor for 2-4 hours, maybe drying it out a bit.
Cool beard Tim should let his beard grow 😜
I thought he was steve saka when I clicked lol
Its a Temu Steve Saka
What’s up guys!
Purging... I do it every time any stick gets bitter
This video is the reason I don't smoke Southern Draw I really wanted to like them but they just never got the age right of you buy them and age them 6 months 2 a year great smokes but if not you might as well have the cat piss on a cigarette
Time to invent some breathable cellos 🤔
Tim has said in the past that cello is breathable as its organic matter
Neither of yall puffed them cigars at all through he whole video
Bro, you blew any modicum of credibility when you started bashing ketchup. A new york cut is dry, bland and screaming for ketchup! Sometimes I am pretty sure that the only reason God invented food was so there'd be something to put ketchup on.
Catsup on the other hand... ❤🎉
If you age your cigar in cellophane, and it was packaged before it was ready, after a good amount of time in storage; will the ammonia still be off-gassed or become inert? Love your channel.
You think u like them dry. I leave mine out for 3-4 hours here in AZ. They are twice as good than smoking right out of the Tupperdor. I call it pre smoke curing.
I got to be better about that. Also in AZ. I get a free hour, pull one out of my humidor (~67%) and light up outside. So many crack and split, and so many taste…off. Need to plan ahead.
