Cigars (like everything else) have diminishing returns once you break a certain price point ($11 ish). For example the difference between a $3 cigar and a $10 cigar is massive but the difference between a $10 cigar and a $40 cigar is borderline negligible.

I rotate my cigars 1/4 turn every 2-3 draws. If there is a breeze (outside) or draft (inside) it can impact the burn. If you're sitting in totally calm environment, it doesn't matter, but most of us don't have that luxury.

When I was younger and originally switched from smoking cigarettes to cigars, I naturally was inhaling cigars as I smoked them and I never had a problem with inhaling them. I then quit smoking altogether and when I came back to smoking cigars, it was no longer natural to inhale them. I had heard that you weren't supposed to and the few times I accidentally inhaled a small amount (as I learned to retrohale), I quickly learned that I definitely did not want to inhale cigars.

Thanks for being honest on the whole plume vs mold thing. It's incredible that people still not only think plume is a thing, but think it's a *good* thing. It doesn't really even make sense. If you think about it, the most likely way to get oils to the surface would be to dramatically under humidify, so the cells of the leaf desiccate and shrink. Obviously, that is not a good idea.

Got into cigars about half a year ago and I'd definitely agree with what Tim says at 5:57. I live in Europe where I pay significantly more per stick than in the U.S. There's more variety in the U.S. and it's usually a LOT cheaper, sure you can't legitimately buy Cubans at home but there's so much more on the market than just Cubans, which are nice but definitely not the be all end all of cigars.

The "canoeing" as you call it or uneven burn. Rotating the uneven burned part up has always worked for me, /shrug. I wouldnt really call it "misinformation", maybe somewhere along the lines of rumor. I generally rotate mine throughout the smoke which I think maintains an even burn. Personally I think the cut has a lot to do the overall draw and burn. An uneven cut may produce a more uneven burn.

Love your show and the fact that you do a pretty good review on a lot of cigars. I just recently found you and am happy I did. Thanks for all the content.
That being said I would like to correct one of your misconceptions. That would be your comments on Cuban cigars. I think we all get the fact that you have a cigar shop in the US and you make a good living from it. I certainly didn't expect you to come out and say yea Cubans are the best. LOL. I've been smoking cigars for 23 years. I started out on non cubans. Mostly Fuentes. Then someone gifted me a cuban and for the next 22 years that is all I smoked. Now with the prices going so high I am looking at non cubans once again. Anyway, a fair statement would have been that some people prefer Cubans over non Cubans. Comes down to personal preference. Look at the European and Asian markets. They are buying up Cubans faster than they can make them which is one reason why they have become scarce lately. Non Cubans do poorly in those markets except for a select few that are trying to gear their cigars towards a more cuban profile.
So, my recent experience with non cubans is that they are getting better. Some manufacturers have tried really hard to make some high quality sticks. Tatuaje and Dunbarton are 2 of them off the top of my head. I would go as far as saying that i like thier cigars. Still not as good as Cubans but decent smokes.
As for pricing, I will spend money on cigars. 925 in the last 2 weeks alone. All non Cubans. Sadly none with you. For some reason your not even close to being competitive but I did want to support you. i think your a good guy and enjoy your shows. So, as far as buying cigars goes, I can buy excellent custom rolled cubans for 250-350 a bundle. so when non Cubans get up to even close to that price, I prefer to buy Cubans. So what I am looking for is a good quality non Cuban cigar that is nowhere near that price point. Some Tatuaje and some Dunbarton fit the bill. Not all of them because they are getting up there in price. I have tried and am trying some of the higher end stuff but only on a one time deal just to see where they are at.
In conclusion, non Cuban producers are geared toward the US market. 99.5% of US cigar smokers are probably smoking non Cubans. There is little chance that that will change anytime in the next 10-20 years. Even if the embargo is lifted, the prices are so high now that most couldn't afford them anyway. They are still the best cigars on the planet and will be for at least several more decades. Non Cubans have come a long way in 10 years but they still cant reproduce that Cuban salty twang. Thats whats really missing from the non Cubans. If they ever get that figured out they will be onto something and be able to compete with the Cubans.

I Recently started smoking cigars on and off since the last year. Idk if it is MY tastebuds of just me burning bad but, I really don't feel or TASTE any difference between a LOT of the budget sticks. There's only about 4 cigs that I actively taste a difference. Macanudos Whites, flavored small tatianas, cuban rejects, a random romeo and juliet, and Backwoods honey berry. Out of those Im starting to not even try any other cigars. Factory smokes and Camachos are also good (Light/Connecticut's only for me too.)

I was told if you have a canoeing cigar you should put the slower burning in down when smoking because of the way oxygen is pulled into the cigar it helps the bottom heat up more and catch up. I have done it in the past and it worked but sometimes the canoeing is so bad nothing but a flame will fix it.

    • @BladiRuiz-te8yl
      @BladiRuiz-te8yl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agreed. Slow side down AND at 45 degrees to the ground will fix canoeing if you catch it early enough and it was lit right. Slow side up will not. We need a proper myth buster experiment. Small canoeing vs large canoeing at different angles, up vs down and see if it can be corrected. I do this all the time and never need to touch up. It does slow you down though. I challenge the CD crew to experiment and I challenge this as misinformation.

From what I have learned about the various cuts and learned from my own experience, the cuts I use depend on shape and type of cigar. I use V-cut for belicoso or torpedoes to keep the integrity of the head shape. Straight cut and punch cuts depend on what I want in a draw and/or mouth feel. Most depend on preference, but with the V, I think shape is the main factor.

I’ve seen a lot of cigar makers inhale cigars. Saka, for example. Jones and Nodal.
The myth I want busted is that you should freeze your cigars at home in your kitchen refrigerator. My thoughts are that a residential style freezer found in most homes will not get cold enough and that condensation or humidification can present a real problem.

Been smoking cigars for 25 years +
Canoe'ing is easily dealt with lick your finger and wet the side thats burning fast it will slow the burn on that side. Or burn it off before it gets to far works to.
Cutting, different cigars will smoke and have a different experience depending what cut is used. Typically flat rounded ends ( Parejo style) with a leaf cap will have a better smoking with a plug hole. Where pointed end (Torpedo ) will smoke better with the flat clipper. Rounded or semi pointed (Belocoso) styles can favorer the V cutters. Keep in mind that just in general, it really comes down to the cigar itself some are simply just a better smoke with a different cut. Try the same cigar brand with a plug or a flat clip, you will find it does provide a different experience when you compare the two cuts.
Cubans or non Cubans, All countries that make cigars have different climates, soil, sun , shade and other factors like altitude that can change the tobacco plant flavor where it is grown even though it is of the same seed . This can be a subtle change or a significant change. Even where the picked leaves are stored until aged and rolled can change the flavor.
Personally I prefer the Cuban's myself. In particular the Hoyo De Monterey Coronations are my base cigar. I find over all to be the most desirable consistent flavoring when a plug is used to open the end.
However Cigars from Nicaragua, Honduras, Ecuador and even Dominican Republic can produce well made top end cigars that stand on their own. Really each of these counties in general produce unique cigars and have a style that is easily identifiable as to which country they are from.
Fun fact : Guantanamera Cristales are a cheap Cuban rustic like and in general considered to be a low end machined rolled cigar however if you age it over 2 years or longer it completely changes and becomes something that will challenge the highest end Cubans. I recently smoked a 7 year aged one and it tasted very similar to a Cohiba Siglo 3.
Plume, is a white mold that effects tobacco leaves and no it doesnt show or reflect the age of the cigar. Although some aged leaf cigar tobacco may have more signs of it. I have seen it show up on a wide range of cigars, even in tubo's. It simply means the cigar has had some sort of contamination at the source. it could be the leaf wrap , where it was stored before rolling, moisture, spores or even from the hand roller themselves in what they touched. If found on cigars in a box it can be rubbed off and for the most part wont effect the cigar being smoked. At most it may be a bit musty if overly infected. Keep in mind this refers to the white plume that the tobacco leaf usually gets. This does not include black mold or other colour molds. These would mean dont smoke it, the cigar is ruined with those other types of mold.
Inhaling, yeah cigar smoke is not really meant to be inhaled. Originally cigars or what was rolled like a cigar was used to be smoked and kept lit to keep the mosquitoes at bay while in the tropics by the locals of the area.
Like Tim said pulled into the mouth , taste and mix with a whisky and dont forget to spit occasionally. However I have met some people that do and even met some famous people that do. These people tend to be Old Boys Club tough old grizzled men.
It really comes down to personal preference, taste, experience ( dont be afraid to try different brands ) , availability, research and aging can all play a factor as to what your own personal preference will be.
    Cheers Everyone !

Considering uneven burns if you have a very thin pin and stick it in the side that's not burning so the air gets through that helps or let the cigar cool off and then touch it up on the unburned side only.

I was always told to start with Connecticuts and lighter shades of cigars. Smoked like 5 of them and didn't like them at all, almost thought cigars weren't for me. Then I smoked a Tabernacle and realized that I just needed something with a stronger and heartier taste.

To store your cigars in a humidor, is it best to remove the cellophane wrapper or leave the cigar in the wrapper? Have been told both... 😐

If a cigar has the cellophane on in the humidor it just takes longer for it to be acclimated but it honestly doesn’t do anything bad at all it just pretty much delays how long it’ll take to for the cigars to reach the humidity level. I personally leave the “wrapper” on just so I can check the cigars for mold, cracks or holes without having my fingers accidentally damage it, and so I can hand them to other people who want to look and smell them without them grabbing it and disrupting the aging process. In the end it’s all up to you but I would just leave it on.

Cigars and pipe tobacco are very similarly honest with prices. The prices are not because of what you will pay, they are because of the price of production. If you have a 5 dollar cigar then it was easily procured tobacco and an easy process.

At home, if no one sees it, I remove the banderole before I cut the cigar. I know there are people who would tar and feather me for it. But I just like holding a bare, original cigar between my fingers. Especially with Short Robustos, where the banderole is already reached after 2cm of embers. Of course, I know that something like this would never be possible in a public lounge...

Just here to say that the statement "storing wine upright will dry out corks" is a total myth.......and would belong in a "Wine Daily" video of similar subject:) Simple physics tells us that the humidity inside the bottle is 100%. Regardless if the liquid is touching the cork. The entire bottle of wine would need to evaporate before a cork could possibly dry out. On the other hand, wine cellar humidity does matter and an arid environment can dry out a cork.....but from the outside.
Good video guys. I enjoyed it.

When I first started I saw a bunch of things saying to start with Connecticut shade wrapper as it is a smoother and more mild cigar. I found that I dislike the flavor profile of the Connecticut for the most part, and it almost it almost drove me away from cigars altogether. I decided to try a Drew estates undercrown Maduro and found I really enjoyed that stick and continued with the hobby.

I have often seen real plume, the sugar crystals, on very aged pipe tobaccos, it will gather on the paper inlay that is found on top of the tobacco in the can. Big, brownish yet clear, sticky crystals. It has nothing to do with the white, powdery stuff on cigars some people think is plume, and they look nothing alike. The white, powdery stuff is mold.

  • @AlexP253

I think folks ignore the “wrapper to filler ratio”. Try to find similar tobaccos in a 6x60 and a lancero….lancer is have a better ratio and often a more flavorful smoke.

I know age doesn't really matter but I kinda hope these weren't made in 1959 because the box smelled a bit moldy and the label seemed to be a bit dated but I'm not sure. Great video! Thanks.
