When I use a guillotine cutter, I gently press the blades against the cigar and rotate the cutter about a 1/4 - 1/2 turn thus slicing the wrapper very slightly. I then press cut the rest of the way. The cut is always clean and perfect never damaging or crushing the wrapper. Once I tried this technique I never looked back.
Been smoking cigars for 2-4 years now. Used to be deathly terrified of straight until I saw a video on how to properly do it. Pin was confusing at first because I thought you had to take out what was cut but then again, another video I happened across showed me otherwise. I use all 3 cuts, what I use now depends on my cigar and mood. Haven’t smoked a torpedo yet but now thanks to you and your video I’ll be able to not just cut but smoke one.
As a newbie I like to sick with the kiss method. My Cigars Daily order will be arriving today. Just wanted to give a big thank you for the fast shipping!
I learn something new every time I watch these videos from you, Tim. I just bought a box of Oliva V Melanio Figurado cigars, which are shaped like torpedoes on the cap end. I forgot my straight cutter at home, and had to use a V cutter, which I had never used on a torpedo before. I cut it straight, and it was still fine to smoke. In fact I love using a V cutter on torpedoes now. But I didn't do it at an angle, even though I always cut at an angle with a straight cutter. Seeing you do it in this video kinda opened my eyes to a better way of enjoying torpedoes. Thank you Boss!
Biggest cigar I’ve smoked was a 7x70 Ogre and I was grateful to have a punch cut for that. 99% of the time, v cut works for me. I’d never seen the torpedo trick before, that was great!
Excellent video, thank you! I've fallen in love with the v-cut over the years and it's pretty much the only cut I use. For this reason I have avoided the torpedo and similar shaped cigars because I always assumed you couldn't get a good v-cut on them. Thanks to this video I'm looking forward to adding torpedo shapes back into my rotation.
Tim, love your content brother. Only a few months ago your channel found its way into my feed....I was a non smoker but your advice and knowledge led me to try a cigar.....now my world has changed....this hobby is soooo relaxing and stress relieving!!! I have been missing out on the "brotherhood of the leaf"....this is true therapy and meditation!!! As usual Tim, great vid. I have all 3 types of cutters, straight, v, and punch. I typically use a straight cut. I do like v cutters as well. I usually use a punch if I smoke my cubin sandwich bundles, because I've noticed I get more tobacco pieces from them if I use a straight cutter. Stay safe brother and thanks again for the awesome videos.
Thank you Tim. I am just getting into v-cutting from a punch and I have definitely noticed a difference in draw. Thanks for the cutter recommendation too.
Very helpful! I use a backstopped straight cutter most of the time. It's got the logo of my favorite cigar lounge on the backstop. Plus I have a backstop from LaGloria as well. Very classic. I also have the JetLine FatBoy with punch, which can actually have 2 depths if you don’t use the locking setting. And I love the cigar rest on it. I'm going to try that Colibi SV! But, the visible difference is that the interior of the cigar stays drier (fresher) longer than a straight cut. The interior of the V doesn't get wet, which definitely alters the flavor. So while I still like my logo backstop cutter, and the built in punch on my Fatboy, the SV has become my Goto at home by the fire. Thanks for all your great content and enthusiasm, Tim!😊

It's very easy to ruin a cigar with a punch unless you have a quality one. The ones built into lighters dull after like 3 cuts haha.. I use a punch more than anything else, you just need a nice sharp one and licking the cap helps as well. If you hold cigars in your mouth because you're using your hands than a punch just feels better and holds up to teeth and drool better lmao
I mostly use a punch. Mostly because it’s built into my lighter and it’s convenient. But I’ll also use a V-Cut at times as well. Especially when I’m out at the cigar lounge enjoying a good smoke.
+1 on the H-Steel cutter. I'm probably 150 cigars deep on mine and it's still sharp enough to collect a debt. Infact I sold my Colibri V because I completely stopped using it after getting the H-Steel.
I prefer the V cut because the cap of the cigar can at times be a just a little dry and if you use a guillotine or a punch it could cause the cigar to unravel at the tip though using a V cutter to me will prevent from that happening
@@joeysaucedo3428 I use a punch a lot and they will crack a cap pretty easily, I've found just moistening it a bit makes a huge difference. Happy to help, that's why we're all here!
Thanks for the video man, I just got the exact same SV-Cutter and love it so far I now ordered the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.3 and was wondering if I should use the V-Cut kind of like you did with the torpedo here?
I have a punch cut on my keychain for when I am out and about, a v cutter for when I am home and a straight cutter is in my bag for beach/pool/barbecue days.
Call me old fashion but I love a straight cut. Currently have a Calibri Double Guillotine with 440 stainless blades that I have at least 800 cuts on and it's still sharp as the day I got it. The black coating is looking almost as bad as that old V cutter you showed but its still cutting great. If I forget that I usually just grab my pocket knife (also 440 stainless) ,which is always kept razor sharp, and use that. My lighter does have one of those punches built in as a last resort but doesn't get used much.
I got put on the Perfect Cutter a long time ago, so I've used a straight cut for years, but to be honest, lately I've been more and more interested in the V-Cut. It's more versatile... Torpedo? Works great. Big ring gauge? Crown cut. It just seems like it would be really handy to have.
Straight followed by Punch (largest punch for the ring gauge) and the V. I received a perfect cut straight cut as a gift and love it. Deep V cut by Colibri is my favorite V.
I use a punch a lot as well, on bigger gauges I do what I call a pig nose cut, you use a smaller punch and make two holes with a small space between. It looks kinda like a pig snout haha
Bruh! This is exactly what i needed to hear about. Im smoking a liga privada t52 while you dropping this. Also thanks for dropping this video on gay valentines day. Appreciate the support❤
I'm actually buying that SV cutter after watching this video! I've been holding out on a V cutter because I have that stupid douchey "straight cut is original style" bs mindset sometimes but I love an easy draw so I'm going to give it a try! Thanks Timmy!
straight cut, cause I haven't tried the other versions of cuts yet, and don't own a different cutter. Still new to this thing. Bought two sample packs from Cigars daily - just getting into this
V-Cut is my preference, in some cases box pressed cigars are a little challenging but if you take tour time it can be done, also depends on the size of the cigar.
I started with a straight cut. One time I didn't have a cutter but I had a knife. I was scared to use the knife so I cut a v cut with my knife. After that I found I enjoyed the integrity of a v cut. but I found for some cigars, it didn't provide enough draw. So what I started doing and what I do now, is I use a V Cut, but then I rotate it 90° and cut again. Making a "cross" cut. Feels nice, prevents me from taking the risk of damaging the cap too much especially when I'm smoking and not just sitting there. Sometimes I smoke when I work so this lets me get a firm grip on the cigar with my mouth. Try it!
Viva la Fernandez! Colibri deep V-cut. I always make a crooked cut with a straight cut. I've not done a punch yet. As for lighter i use Eagle torch. Inexpensive and reliable.
When I buy sticks, I usually buy 3-4 at least of each kind, so that I could try each with a different cut to see if I can taste any differences and note them. But the V is my favorite! Sometimes with the 👑 head cut and thepunch behind that
Ever since I've gotten the colibri SV, I've only used the V side! xD But on some larger cigars when I started back in the day, I may go for straight for a more open draw.
I typically use a deep V cutter. Colibri works great. I use a punch cut when I don’t have it handy as it’s on my lighter. What I do is make two punches side by side to enlarge the draw area. Sort of a “figure 8” look. Work’s reasonably well.
I prefer the V-cut personally because of the mouthfeel and also because I don’t cut too deeply. I usually cut torpedoes on the bias slightly with a straight cutter, but I’m definitely going to try the V-cut for that going forward. Punch is okay but does cause cap issues
Great video, as always. I use a double guillotine cutter from Colibri and love it. I am curious about the V cut, so might pick one of those up. Thank you, Tim, for such great content.
I have been using a punch because it doesn't need any additional hardware other than the punch on my torch, but I've been desiring more draw so I'm leaning towards a V cut.
Nice video.i have all types of cutters but i find myself using the v cutter the most. A lot of loose tobacco leaves get jammed into the bottom though so eventually I'm worried it will clog and prevent the cutter from closing. The straight cutter just requires too much attention. If I'm in my car driving making a perfect straight cut almost always ends badly. My least favorite, like you is the punch cutter. I find it rarely extracts the punched part properly and ends up making a mess when i try to pull the piece it by hand. I vote v cutter. The only downside of a v cutter is not being able to cut down a cigar if you want to save a lit one for later. I know that's a bad practice but it happens so i always keeps a straight cutter around too
I go back and forth from v cut to straight cut. I very really use a punch matter of fact almost never lol. I usually us a straight cut for smaller ring gauge cigars on a ring gauge 56 or bigger I go with a v cut. Torpedo I go mostly with a straight cut, but to be honest I've never cut a torpedo with a v cutter that way you did so I'm going to try it. Again thanks for the video like always.
Tim, love your content, curious how many cigars you smoke daily? How many do other viewers here smoke? I’m on about 2-3 a week. Is that too many from a health perspective?
You're probably smoking the right amount , it's easy to start smoking more than once a day. I had neck surgery 6 weeks ago and I was smoking twice a day before that but stopped a month before the surgery. Doctors orders and now I just had my first one a couple days ago but I will be cutting down because nicotine affects the healing process , technically my Dr wants me to wait 6 months. But I am going to limit them after that time , I was smoking 2 full size and 4-6 cigarillos a day. Like I said I'm going to cut back going forward , plus it's easy to spend hundreds a month on cigars when you start smoking several a day...
I mix it up, and sometimes it’s situational. In my Raptor, I have a Straight Cutter, so that’s what I normally go with while driving, but at the office, I use a punch, since there’s one on my lighter, and the cigars that I keep in my office humidor are normally toros or robustos. At home, I do all 3, wherever is convenient at the time. I have like 20 cutters total, whether it’s a V- cutter , Straight cutter or punch, whenever is in reach, I use. Plain and simple. My wife likes the Straight cutter. To each their own.
I used to kinda look down on punch cutting cigars, but it's slowly become my favored way of cutting cigars. It just has a better mouth feel, the cap always remains intact even if I'm holding it in my teeth and it's really hard to get it wrong when you hand a buddy a punch who doesn't know what their doing. I do v cut larger gauges, but my norm is a punch.
I have the Colibri SV. Love the V cut side. The straight cut side leaves a small step in the cut. Have a buddy w exact same cutter. Has the exact same issue. Is this common or did we both get duds?
I’ve been using a jet line punch cut torch lighter combo for about a year now. My favorite cut but anything under a 50 ring gauge I’ll whip out ole faithful guillotine
I am used to do punch cut everywhere I can, it is easy and always on hand, because it is on lighter. When I need to cut torpedo I need to dust off my straight cutter obviously 😁
I don't really have an allegiance to one type of cut over the others. I tend to mix it up a bit with my cuts. Depending on the cigar I'm smoking, I'll use the Jetline H-Steel cutter, Colibri V-Cut or the Colibri Quasar Punch. I like the Colibri Quasar Punch because it has multiple size punches on the same unit, so there's never an issue with the hole being too narrow. I've never had an issue with cracking caps. I have seen several instances, even in this video, where the V-Cut can apply too much pressure to the cap and crack it though.
LOL. That's the same thing I did 30 years ago when I started smoking cigars. But admittedly, me and my buddies were idiots and didn't know any better. We'd seen it in movies and thought it was how we were supposed to do it. These days, V cutter all the way.
It is all about retaining the shoulder integrity. For a press box, v-cut never fails. For a large ring gauge, punch is the way to go. All others, a straight perfect cutter is reliable. Lastly, go all metal. They last forever.
Love all the vids and I love the rundown of the different cuts for cigars, but I wanted to mention that you can make a bigger surface area with a punch cut in a pinch. What you can do is double punch the cigar. This is a good way to make a larger surface area on your cigar. If you only have a punch cutter. You can do a punch and a half by punching part of the way into the original punch cut and that will make a larger surface area for your draw. That is a great way to make a larger surface area if the punch cutter is the only cutter that you have with you.
Ive got a knock off perfect cutter from Amazon, the one that stops you cutting too much off your cigar, that just does a straight cut, i dont know if i can be bothered trying another way lol.
I use punch. I have done it on torpedos straight on only issue was leaving a tail lol but I had a knife on me and cut the tail off but it smoked grate none the less lol
For me, it depends on the cigar. If it's a large ring gage, I will use a punch, most standard ring gage parejos I use a V-cutter. And for torpedoes, I use the straight cut at an angle.
OMG THANK YOU! At the end of the video you mention how "many cigars in x,y,z and dominican Republic just kinda hand twist it at the bottom" I visited Punta Cana recently and I bought a couple early in the day but waited until the girlfriend and kids were sleeping to step outside and enjoy one....totally forgot, they took it at the tsa before the flight Almost like a vacation miracle, right as I'm about to bite it, I notice a little leaf ever, ever so slightly frayed from the cigar... I give it a gentle tug and it was like boobs falling out of a bra for the first time. I'd never seen anything like it. Perfectly ready to light without a cutter at all. So of course my dumb ass thought he discovered something new because of course all the cigars did it So I get back to jersey and a couple dozen cigars later I check every one to see if I can unravel it, losing my mind. Becoming unhinged. Wondering if the entire vacation was a dream. You made it right man, thank you
I usually just punch everything and if it’s a smaller ring gauge like 38-44 then ill typically do a V cut! Rarely do I straight cut but if I do it’s usually on a smaller gauges
I prefer use the v cut on the box press cigars since the straight cut might tend to damage the corners of the box press the I use the punch for the round cigars 🤙🏼
The ‘straight cutter on the table’ method is a great idea!
I also just used a straight cutter and nip the cap off. My most preferred.

Hi!!! I’ll be getting some of your cigars, in the mail, today! I’ve grown to be a big fan of the V cut! Happy Smoking!
V cut for life!
wow tim thanks for the amazing video, as I get more into enjoying cigars I am learning so much information.

I use them all. I liked your tip on V cutting Toros. Thanks for the tips
When the torpedo hits your uvula: "Hey buddy, throw up now!"
Made me giggle 😂
I have been going with the crosscut more and honestly I love it
Thank you Tim.
Seems to have the best combo.
Thanks, Tim!
UPDATE: So I bought the Colibri SV and I love it! Subjectively, the V cut seems to me to allow a slightly richer flavor to come thru the cigar to my pallet.
I never use a punch!
I don't know how many cigars I've ruined trying. I gave up. I use a V-cut mostly and of course the straight a close second.
Great educational video as usual Tim!!!

Lick the cap just a little bit before you cut and the cap will very rarely crack. Just don't do it if you're using someone else's cutter lol

A mature cigar shouldn’t do that. You can also moisten the cap with your mouth and use your own cutter to avoid making anyone angry.
Thanks for the video man, I just got the exact same SV-Cutter and love it so far
I now ordered the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.3 and was wondering if I should use the V-Cut kind of like you did with the torpedo here?

I prefer the crown cut for my 60's what do you think? I like short fat cigars the nub is one of my favorites.
Is one v cut cutter okay for large rings?
Crown 👑 cut can't go wrong with that type of cut
I don't really have an allegiance to one type of cut over the others. I tend to mix it up a bit with my cuts. Depending on the cigar I'm smoking, I'll use the Jetline H-Steel cutter, Colibri V-Cut or the Colibri Quasar Punch. I like the Colibri Quasar Punch because it has multiple size punches on the same unit, so there's never an issue with the hole being too narrow. I've never had an issue with cracking caps. I have seen several instances, even in this video, where the V-Cut can apply too much pressure to the cap and crack it though.
Not so much about the taste but definetly the feel. I prefer large but shallow punch cuts
How do I sharpen a straight double cutter
Please test the "la fines lames" cutter and punch bracelet 🙏🙏
It's probably because he was in the military but my grandfather bites the cap off his cigars. Heathen. 😂
LOL. That's the same thing I did 30 years ago when I started smoking cigars. But admittedly, me and my buddies were idiots and didn't know any better. We'd seen it in movies and thought it was how we were supposed to do it. These days, V cutter all the way.
I like the punch.
It is all about retaining the shoulder integrity. For a press box, v-cut never fails. For a large ring gauge, punch is the way to go. All others, a straight perfect cutter is reliable. Lastly, go all metal. They last forever.
WHAAAAAAT!!!!! The Deep V and Torpedo's???? OMG, I know what shape Im smoking tomorrow!
At the end of the video you mention how "many cigars in x,y,z and dominican Republic just kinda hand twist it at the bottom"
I visited Punta Cana recently and I bought a couple early in the day but waited until the girlfriend and kids were sleeping to step outside and enjoy one....totally forgot, they took it at the tsa before the flight
Almost like a vacation miracle, right as I'm about to bite it, I notice a little leaf ever, ever so slightly frayed from the cigar...
I give it a gentle tug and it was like boobs falling out of a bra for the first time. I'd never seen anything like it. Perfectly ready to light without a cutter at all.
So of course my dumb ass thought he discovered something new because of course all the cigars did it
So I get back to jersey and a couple dozen cigars later I check every one to see if I can unravel it, losing my mind. Becoming unhinged. Wondering if the entire vacation was a dream.
You made it right man, thank you
I switch between a straight cut with a xicar x1 and a v cut with a colibri v cutter. It depends on what I grab first.

That’s what I give my friends that are getting into cigars. I call them training wheel cutters.
I’m a straight cut guy, but will occasionally go v cut. I will do a punch as a last resort since my lighter has a built in punch.
Is that cutter you use self sharping like some others
Almost always a V cut guy. Got a xifei 3 in 1 for those times when I need a punch or straight cut. 60 bucks well spent
I generally use a punch, because my lighter has on built in. And I have never messed up the cap with it.
What about the table cutters that are a bit rounded out. Different sizes and a bit more of a rounded cut
I prefer a v-cut. Specifically, the Colibri SV cutter in the event I want to do a straight cut.
I look at the cigar , size, shape , length.. base my cut on that. So I use them all.
I usually just punch everything and if it’s a smaller ring gauge like 38-44 then ill typically do a V cut! Rarely do I straight cut but if I do it’s usually on a smaller gauges
Depends on vitola and press. Box pressed demands a deep v cut. Torpedo must be straight. Other than that, it's whatever you're feeling.
I prefer use the v cut on the box press cigars since the straight cut might tend to damage the corners of the box press the I use the punch for the round cigars 🤙🏼
Crown cut works well for me
I have them all but find I use the v cut the most. Straight cut any torpedoes that cross my path but almost never use a punch.
I use a straight cut. My cutter is from the Warrior Poet Society. It is the WPS Figaro.
Usually V cut from robusto size and up. Straight cut for the rest. And a punch when I’m on the road and bring my lighter with built-in punch cutter.
I'll take those pre-cut cigars 😅
Straight V and Punch for me depending on the cigar.
