What a Fantastic Gentleman this Man is! To send you the Actual means of his entire way of supporting himself and his life in the form of a gift speaks to his Character and how much he sees in you as a Craftsman. Outstanding.
Very good information as always Kevin. These are the exact tips that can save you from creating a time bomb in your transmission. Thank you for taking the time to do this video
Speaking of shipping woes, I had my twin cam short block rebuilt by Dark Horse and shipped back to me in NC this past week. It arrived having had something dropped on top of it, or something too heavy placed on it that caused the cylinder studs to pierce the cardboard flaps - one went completely through two layers of heavy cardboard (it is a Dark Horse provided box). The studs were bent just enough that I couldn't put a jug on them at all. Dark Horse sent me a new set of studs under warranty and my motor is together and ready to go in the bike. Thanks to Andrew and his team for taking care of me!
A hd dealership just told me I needed my trans rebuilt. I was having some new noises I couldn't pinpoint. They rebuilt the trans and after it was done there was more noise. Tried telling me "it is normal". I was pist. After a couple days arguing the tech " shop foreman" told me he had checked crank runout and it was 9 thou. I was pretty pist at this point t. I stead of stoppi.g and calling me to inform me, he just carried on rebuilding the trans knowing at that point 99% chance all the new noise was due to crank being junk. Well since he hadn't told me about crank, I went ahead and put another couple thousand miles on bike. Then drivetrqin was really noisy. Drain oil and its full of brass. Now my entire engine is trashed. And I have a trans that now makes a bunch of noise because it was rebuilt poorly, when it never made a noise before rebuild.
I’d love to go back in time and learn to do what you do. I’ve loved Harleys my entire life. I’m 42. I own a home (or the bank does), support myself and my ole lady .. so starting from scratch isn’t in the cards. I didn’t even know I liked wrenching on anything until a few years ago. I do basic maintenance and basic work on my scooters and car. I wish I knew what I do now back when I coulda gone to school for this stuff then apprentice with someone like u (a machinist and engine builder) for several years to be one of the best such as yourself. Love watching these vids. Makes me sad sometimes tho while I get ready to ride to my dead end office job that sucks the soul outta me. At least I have my ride home to put the soul back lol. Anyway thank u for the glimpse into a top tier shop so we can live vicariously through your vids. The funny part is later on in life I found out my grandpa and my wife’s grandpa were both machinists lol
What wonderful gifts you received! I'm still using many of the old tools my father gave me almost 50 years ago including micrometers dial indicators and such.
Kevin when I built transmission for caterpillar some times when we had a bearing spin and it wasn’t to bad, we would ping the case with a center punch and then use green lock tight ……..
As usual though I may nothave a Baker DD7 the information and knowledge passed is so useful and appreciated! You are an excellent teacher and know how to relay information. A truly dying art.
I literally did a dd7 install yesterday and had to change the shim ( I had 005" and brought it down to 0.001"). The other thing to note is that you need to trial fit your gears and look for gear to casing contact and dress this per the bakers instructions. I had some contact and sorted it. 👌 love your videos and a great reference for anyone who wants to learn
Well done mate, good job. Precison is as precison needs, and "near enough" is NEVER good enough. Do it properly the first time and it won't come back to haunt you! Cheers from Oz. 👍🇦🇺
As most of us don't have precision grinders, but love it if we did, are spacers available in other thicknesses from a supplier? Keep up the great videos as its nice to see old school mentality and accuracy at work.
Kevin IF your interested I have a Good Friend that can replace almost any crystals on then tools . He was a watch maker Now if you want to talk about precision ,OMG he drives me crazy LOL but he's done several for my Machinist friend & it really make them come back to life. PART 2 Evaporust will make the rust go away but don't use it on a "C" spring like on a divider . After the rust killer wash with soap & water then cover with synthetic motor oil.
I'm glad to see you had some trouble, as a home mechanic my first thought is what did I do wrong? On my DD7 I'm on 3rd main drive gear seal, first one went just over 10,000 mi, end play was at 5thou when checking it, got it to 1 thou second time and got about 20,000 mi before having to change seal again. I asked Baker for some advice, didn't get any besides recommending I change seals again, noticed part number for main drive gear seal changed, when asking about it I was told it's a little bigger now. After 3rd install and approx. 10,000 miles it's still ok, hoping 3rd times the charm but keep expecting to see that dreaded drip! I've also been running oil on low side of range. Happy to see this video and any feedback would be welcome.
Question for ya Kevin, I opted to not go through my transmission with my 107" build. If, well more like when, the time comes that I need to go through it can it all be done without pulling the motor? I've debated on, when the time comes, just dropping a DD6 in it.
Awsome video Kevin after we get Zeuz back up and running a transmission is my next upgrade down the road but I'm gona get some time set up probably in September and come see ya and get things rolling
Thanks Kevin for the great tutorial. If my maths is correct you will have to grind a 125 thou shim (116 thou+9 thou) which should give you 1 thou end play?
Good morning. Isn't it possible to have Baker send you the proper spacer, or offer a wide range of a selection. Clearly, its off by too many thousands. Does Baker have these?😊
That Bridgeport is looking very lonely in the background. It needs some go fast parts on its bed to be the happiest. Out of curiosity what CNC integration setup are you using? Ive got a very aged Bausch and lomb Acu-Rite 2 setup that is very?? How should i say aged? I guess though so is the Series Special 2 its on or Bridgport Textron.
Just to add that in WW2 when the US and UK got together making parts for the same aircraft us UK people had our parts rejected because we had a system where we would pair assembled parts (just like HD do today) whereas the US manufacturers would make parts to a finer tolerance so that if you needed a part you could just fetch one from the parts store and it would fit without the need to pairing.
I don’t understand why baker can’t already have the tolerance set! It has nothing to do with the factory cases so I disagree with that statement tho I believe you was just using as a general term. My point being is that the tolerance is set up between two bearings and their supplied carrier/race assembly and their supplied final drive gear… This tolerance could very well be setup at baker and take the bs out of you and I having to grind shims…. Very informative video however thanks!

No doubt, hope this man has a great retirement!

What an amazing gift! Wow!
And examples of the value of buying expensive high quality tools that will last a lifetime, or two.

I LOVE doing trans rebuild work like this. Very rewarding. You know it's either 100% right, or it's 100% wrong.

So good too see someone taking the time and effort to do it RIGHT. A real rarity these days. Good stuff !

Never too late

Doing things right is why we watch your work. Thanks as always.

Try knurling the loose interior of valve guides
Your attention to detail is awesome and quite admirable. Thanks for talking on this video.
That was a awesome Gift. Major Gift!
Now that's a great video, showing the work as you talk, instead of talk videos!!

I like and appreciate the talking Kevin. You're a great teacher...thank you for doing this for us.

I was hoping to actually see you machine a spacer.
That's quite a care package.

Running a DD 7 in a 2009 FLTR with a R&R 131” complete motor. Lot of fun and at 1900 miles seems good.
What a gift 🎁 congratulations 🎊
Need to see everything Kevin! 😉
Even machining the spacer.☝️🧐
👌👍✌️
Great Video Kevin 🤘⚡️🤘✨✨

I like the shiny parts best.

If the end play is set correctly, will that eliminate any neutral knock there mayhave been beforehand?

Hello Mr Kevin. Been a while. This is Max. Had to close the shop after a few back surgeries. That's why I have not been in contact
Sorry to hear about closing up the Shop. Your Health comes First
Do you charge by the hour😁😁😁, I bet HD doesn't do what you do!! Keep up the good work!!!
I’m curious was it your recommendation to go with Bakers or did your customer choose? And why Bakers and not Jim’s?

Cool video
Never seen a 1/2 of a 1/10th of a thousandth dial indicator. What in the world would he be measuring.
Kevin I’m a machinist I think u should 5/10 or 1/2 a thousandth
I wanted to be a mechanic but failed
