- In this video, we tell a story.
A story of transition. The transition that the illustrous havelis of Sekhawati, Rajasthan have gone through. This video summarises the journey these havelis go through - from being storytellers of opulence, to bearing the brunt of migration. Such changes have brought in desolation of these townhouses and brought lives in them into a standstill.
The present century has given a new lease of life to a handful of these havelis, as private enterprises have taken over the task of their revival (well, to a certain extent). Heritage hotels that allow visitors and travellers a peek into the past glory of these townhouses - as they and the frescoes within are restored.
Hope you enjoy this short story spanning 6 chapters!
Chapter 1: Folklore & Art
A haveli whose walls are adorned with traditional Rajasthani puppets (katputli) in multiple vibrant colours, beautifully crafted handpulled fans and a terrace offering vistas of old the Mandawa city during sunset.
Chapter 2 : Partition
A double haveli which has perhaps been divided among joint owners within the same family. So, one half has been restored with modern colors while the other half is decaying.
Chapter 3: Desolation
Two havelis - one, with ornate frescoes on the outer walls but inaccessible from the inside. Second, with beautiful frescoes (including, Krishna leela) inside but yet remains uninhabited.
Chapter 4 : Fading
A haveli with frescoes depicting a style quite different from the ones we visited. Both style and subjects are very unique, is heavily influenced by European style of painting - but is sadly fading away.
Chapter 5: Standstill
A beautiful johara in with chhatris on four corners, and viewing galleries cum stairwell in traditional bangla style - now in dire need of attention as the water has turned green, making it unsuitable for potable use.
Chapter 6: Revival
A 1890-mansion that has been restored into a luxury heritage hotel, that boasts of unique frescoes, alongside a graden cafe and a dine-in restaurant.
