The Rookery - Episode 0 - The Awakening

- The Awakening is when a mundane mortal, a Sleeper, has the truth of the real world, the Supernal, revealed to them. It is traumatic and intense, and thereafter, they are one of the Wise, the Mages, living in the Fallen World, surrounded by the Lie. They strive to learn more, to bend reality to their will, to call forth creatures of the Underworld at a whim, or delve into the souls of others to learn their dark secrets.
This is our Session Zero, abridged! We talk about who the player characters are, where they're set up and what they're expecting from the game. Nothing flashy yet, no adventure, just a look into the beginning of something... magical.

The whole idea of robbing a bank and then teleporting out gives me an idea for some sort of criminal investigator character who Awakened because he was diving into a case of thieves doing that and inadvertently awoke as he obsessed over the evidence.
I have no doubt that kind of Awakening has happened! Literally fighting to figure out the Truth...

Player: "2nd Amendment preacher, grew up in a militia family. Aspiration: desperately hoping for someone with bad judgement trying to attack the character, so she can get to legally end a live."

Oh nice, I was saddened by the lack of WoD content on youtube when I looked into it a year or so back. Just looked into it again stumbling on this series, this looks fantastic. Running a few mage games myself though all except one are on hold now due to the pandemic, the one being done online with friends. Looking forward to watching the rest of the series!

It was a part of Thier "master series" with the name "mages: the Ascension" but they talking and talking about fluff they could have settled before the session and they barely used Thier magic power or abilities and Thier character were just bland in my opinion (and this is a very personal criticism but Thier characters were the exact opposite of min maxed so I just couldn't imagine the doing anything interesting with such weak characters)
Mage: the Ascension is a very very fluffy game and it is all about the description and character beliefs.
@@OccultistsAnonymous I have got nothing against stories and fluff but I came to see magic and even in cases where there were obvious magical solutions without attracting witnesses they never used Thier powers

Why does Chis only have five Arcana dots while the others have six? IS he just playing a newer mage?
Good catch! UI failure basically, we were just showing everyone's top 3 Arcana, but he has Force 2, Prime 2, Life 1, Mind 1!

I'm from NYC and I've written up a ton of mage lore for NYC and if you want I can share it with you any time you want. I've been running CofD for years now.
I appreciate it, but I really like coming up with my own lore and concepts! I hope we do your city proud in our depiction of a CofD version of NYC.

Oh, welcome in! It's a great system and while these first few episodes have us stumbling along, it's a pretty good way to see us learning! If you want to see a more experienced crew (with 3/4ths of these players!) check out the Into the West game that we have running now.
Also, swing by the Discord! We've got a great community and you might find a game there, and plenty of folks who can answer your questions.
This seems really cool, though I still have $400 worth of 1st Ed Awakening Books I never got to use laying around. :(

Those books are still useful! Great sources for magic items, spells, merits, and story elements.
@@OccultistsAnonymous That's good to hear. The real problem is that everyone I know that tabletops are old world of darkness fans and hate the new world games with a passion, except for me.

@Ryan Stump , best way to some up Vampire:
Sabat Eastern vampire= first person shooter.
Ventrue run city= bridge commander.
Old World werewolf/ mage, it was overly hard as hell to create a Hollow/ carin for spirit energy.
New World" it is easy to create a Spirit Pool to drink from. A three or five year character of the right mage path can do so.
I bought the books cause I really like Reading them, playing with a given group, uh.. it was funner watching grass grow in my area.
Is this overlay just a youtube thing or how did you do it? I'm going to be running a VTM 5e game virtually and this is super cool
It's an OBS thing we put together for streaming. On our end, we're just looking at Discord cameras and Roll20!

I highly suggest trying online, there's a pretty active Play-by-Post community on The Onyx Path forums and you can always try Roll20's LFG forums. Best of luck in your search for a game!
Could you add hashtags for mage the awakening?
I only found this just now through reddit but when I was starting my MTA 2E campaign six months ago, I couldn't find anyone playing on TH-cam when I searched :\ I'm sure other people have had this issue

What platform are you using for this?
We use Roll20. It gives me some good organization tools and the provided character sheet covers all the basics for CoD 2E.
