    A good question was raised that I'll answer for those of you who invested in an aftermarket filter system: my Fotodiox WonderPana system for the "G1" (A013) works perfectly with the new G2 (A041) lens. All of the diameter measurements are identical.

    I'm curious to how wide it is compared to my 16-35 f4 canon

    • @billzidis2656
      @billzidis2656 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shawn McDermott Not very wide because the 15-30 is 15.8mm on the beggining...Still 16-35 is a better option due to filters

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not true. I've compared it to all kinds of 15mm lenses and it is as wide as them. Someone started that rumor and it just got repeated. The Tamron is much wider than any of the Canon 16-35mm options.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it were 15.8mm, Tamron would have HAD to report it as a 16-30mm - you don't get to round up that much!

    Very happy with my G1 but I'm not ruling out upgrading if the image quality is improved. I use my 15 to 30 a lot, I like that my G2 24 - 70 is tap in console compatible so it would be nice to have this in the 15 to 30 also. If the VC is as improved as suggested then that alone might sell it to me even if optically there is little difference.

    • @LuigiNespeca

    I bought this lens. The few photos I have taken look pretty good, but I am not a "lens tester", as I have limited knowledge. I am waiting for Lightroom to add the lens profile (it is already available on ACR in Photoshop, I believe, but it has not been added to LR for some reason). I guess the G1 version lens profile might work OK on the G2, but from what you said, it is a little different optically. And, no, I am not going to create my own lens profile. Dustin, I hope you end up liking this lens, as it set me back $1300 for the N version. BTW, I bought the 24-70 G2 and LOVE it.

    Excellent! Coming full circle with this lens review now. It has been a very exciting time for third party lenses since this v1 came out! No one has documented this better than you on this channel. And so, I see Canon’s recent R release very much as a response to Sony bodies and, perhaps even more, a response to Sigma and Tamron lenses. Those new R-mount lenses by Canon are designed to fight back at the third party manufacturers. And, perhaps most importantly, I doubt that the native R mount will be accessible to third parties any time soon. But hey, especially this lens will be perfect with the adapter that has a built in polarizer/ND Filter. This lens will probably will be more user friendly with the R mount than with any EF body! Could you please also test this lens for astrophotography and coma? And, when can we expect a R review from you? Many regards from Spain, Dirk!

    I have the original version of this lens. Who’s I had the money for the new version but the old one is great in most aspects. One where it fails for me is its af speed. I shoot live music photography and videography. In the photography department live music is many times action photography in low or high contrast light . So many action times the lens just misses. It will want to focus on the brighter areas and not the subject. Even with the af point on the subject. I believe now it will provide better accusation of the subject in low light high contrast action situations . If you can will you try this out ?
    I love how good the VCison this lens. I have used it for videos hand held and had great results. So if it is better this is phenomenal.
    Also is this new lens an actual f/2.8. The old version doesn’t seem to be. I shoot low light and really need the lowest apertures I can get sometimes. Then is it’s focal lenghts actual. It seems the 15mm end is actually 16-16.5mm. This also is something I use is the width . In close and needing to get a whole band into the scene. 14mm being perfect probably for many situations. The great thing about this lens is it going to 30mm which I use a lot too. 27-30mm is one of my favorite looks for action portraits. This tells a story but has isolation. Thanks Dustin for your super detailed and very professional reviews. The best !

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stay tuned for my IQ segment, which will answer many of your questions. AF performance is definitely snappier on the new lens, as it has a dedicated processor for AF. The 15mm on the Tamron is very near 15mm. I've compared it to a number of 15mm primes and it is as wide as them, and noticeably wider than the Canon 16-35mm zooms. That rumor got started by someone and was oft-repeated, but it simply isn't true.

    For me it's an useless upgrade. The G1 version was an excellent lens, no need to make a G2.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

    Here is the problem with these kinds of hands on reviews. They are not actually hands on.
    First of all, switches. They are crap, pardon my French. Very easy to change position inadvertently. Tamron told me it is because they wanted people with the gloves on to be able to use these switches. I had to put electric tape on my 24-70mm G2 and 70-200mm G2 to prevent this from happening because my lenses are constantly lose AF because the AF switch changes position.
    Second of all, the new G2 lenses are aluminum now but Tamron did not use thick paint or even compatible primer. So I already scratched both of my lenses.
    I think Tamron should recall ALL of their lenses and repaint them.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what your technique or carry system is, but I've spent extensive time with all the G2 lenses (and own the 70-200 and 45 and 85mm VC primes) and I've never had an inadvertent switch issue. Not once. I've done dozens of events, weddings, and portrait sessions. Not once. I'm just curious why this seems to be such a big deal to you. I haven't had any issues with paint scratching off, either, though I do think that Tamron's new flat paint on plastic surfaces (lens hoods or the non-G2 finishes) is very prone to marking.

      P.S. All of my reviews are in three parts. The first look is only the first segment of the three.
      P.S.S. How can you say it isn't "hands-on" when you can literally SEE MY HANDS on the lens demonstrating the build and features?

      @@DustinAbbottTWI I am not the only one complaining about the switches. There are several threads on DPreview about this. People usually grab the camera by the lens and it happens. One guy made a hub for his 100-400mm or 150-600mm another guy made something similar and wrapped the whole lens in vinyl wrap. I scratched both lenses. I had to put tape on the switches so they don't move because I missed a lot of shots. Both of these situations never happened with G1 version. G1 versions were un-scratchable and the switches were recessed. Take a look at the Sigma. Their switches are a lot better and their paint is a lot better too.

      All paint is prone to markings. While Nikon and Canon and also Sigma(the lenses I dealt with) use proper primer and thicker paint Tamron doesn't. On the thicker paint the scratch does not go all the way to the metal. On Tamron even a minor scratch goes all the way through. I think there are pictures posted on the Dpreview about that too. Look how thin the paint is.

    The first generation that you gave very good characters is nothing but a crap lens with terrible discoloration and a monster to carry around (just my opinion).

      I'll give you that it's heavy, but here's lots of reasons why your other statements are false: www.flickr.com/photos/thousandwordimages/albums/72157650361615877/page1. I've put that lens up against a LOT of other competitors, and it has come out well many, many times.
