Fun thing to note: the TAP-In Console allows the user to control the manual focus attenuation so, if one wanted a bit more throw, they could program the lens to allow for it :)
Thanks Dustin, I have always enjoyed and taken note of your reviews. Looking forward to the future episodes of this lens.... might end up in my kit bag.
Watched some reviews and bought it! This series from Dustin on it were the best I found! And after a few months of owning I admit it's more on my camera then every other lens I own
Love your videos!! I have a bunch of canon ef lenses and my tampon 35mm 1.4 is my favorite so far. ill move to the rf system the next month do you think the tamron will be good on the new system??
I think it should handle that transition fine, though I haven't tested the combination. You may possibly need a firmware update, but Tamron will do that for free if necessary.
I cover that in more detail in the final review. It works okay with good autofocus accuracy and Eye AF, but the combo will lock up the camera occasionally. I've had that happen about three times in, say 80 shots.
Dustin Abbott Ok, so you expect me, the user of your videos so far, to sort this out by clicking on your video and listening until I realize this info is not for me? Lol. You could put merely CSN if applicable, or just S if it is for Sony only. Yes? And this title doesn’t need (Fxxx), |, or 4k in it.
I think you might have some sound issues with your setup. I know nothing about setups for filming, as I just photograph, but I noticed a sound that sounds like when you charge something and you can hear the stream. I also noticed that in some of your previous reviews. I’m not so sure what it is, but I can tell that there is something.
Hi there - what you are hearing are cicadas outdoors. I don't have much control over them ;) They emit a very high pitched, very loud sound that even a lapel mic picks up a bit.
Dustin Abbott Thank you for clarifying that, Dustin! It just sounds like a charge of steam on my phone. It might be my phone, or it might be the mic not picking up the frequences of the cicades properly, which makes it sound like this. Not that this matters, but I’m just curious, hehe. Cicades are quite fascinating with how they can create such frequences. I saw one in Italy last year - they can get really big!
So I had to sell all my camera gear but this really tempts me to get a new 90D with just this lens as a perfect lens for candid family pictures. And it's super affordable.
Very interested in this review. I have the original 35L and haven’t been tempted by the mkII version. But, for 900$ this might. I still love the character of the original 35L. I’d love to see what the actual design goals were going through the different eras of photography and what they put emphasis on while designing.
I'm gonna spoil it for all and say that this lens is very amazing. I own a copy and For a modern lens it has character. It blurs like a 1.2. Overall a very good lens and you will not regret owning it.
I'm back to looking at buying the Tamron again - can't easily afford the Canon - and the sale price of $949.99 CAD right now for the Tamron. Looks like the close focusing and magnification isn't too different. I usually rent the Canon 35 L II for some cool food and drink shots and was hesitant on getting the Tamron because of those differences. Seems now that .21 isn't huge from .20. I thought they were further apart than that but I guess not.
Tamron is really tempting with its recent lens....but I do like using Canon's free DPP software which provides amazing raw processing specifically for Canon lenses....not sure I'd be willing to change my workflow or if Tamron can provide some way to import profiles of its lenses into DPP...
Development for mirrorless and development for DSLRs are two completely different things. This exact lens will never be offered for mirrorless. As for EF and F being outdated - combined those are still the largest market share by a good margin.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Canon and Nikon were the number 1 and 2 with their DSLRs so of course there are a lot of people out there with their cameras needing lenses for them. BUT...lens designs are used for several decades (sometimes slightly updated a few times to last that long). How many are going to be buying new DSLRs with those mounts in 5 years? Let alone 10+ years. That's why I was hoping they (and 3rd party manufacturers like Tamron) would shift all their development to the new mirrorless mounts. After all, Sony, Panasonic, Olympus and Fuji are already there. Canon and Nikon were slow to react for the same reason Kodak went out of business. Kodak even invented the digital camera but the inventor was told to put it back in his drawer. It was not a welcome invention when Kodak had almost countless manual photo labs as well as film roll sales to protect. A short term move by Kodak and it eventually killed them. Now Canon and Nikon has rushed to the future too. But having to diverge resources to their legacy...it splits their focus. The new mounts desperately need more complete lens sets and Canon and Nikon can't bring them out fast enough.
I'm sure the Canon or Nikon versions of this lens will work well on their respective mirrorless systems via adapter, but Nikon just announced the D6, so they aren't moving out of the DSLR space anytime soon. P.S. Look at the sidelines of major sporting events and tell me how many mirrorless bodies you see there.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Yes I know DSLRs still have a few advantages and are prefered by sport journalists. I just don't think it will last long. A majority of them will probably be mirrorless in 5 years.
Waited this review for long time. I cannot wait for the next episode. I already own Tamron 24 70 G2 and I am not sure if it makes sense to get 35mm F1.4 as well.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Great look forward to it, you have mentioned that the Canon 35mm 1.4L was one of their best so if this Tamron can match or exceed it would be the one to purchase. Look forward to view the next video.
I'm looking forward to the technical review of this new Lens. I would prefer a Canon lens over any third party glass simply because of focusing speed, accuracy and compatibility. This would be a first non Canon lens that I would really love to purchase because I am really impressed with its focus speed as well as its build quality when I personally tested in at of the shops. I just need the technical review to seal the deal. :) Thanks in advance DA.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I'm assuming image quality should be better on the newer lens. But the VC for video and maybe price would be the main incentive for the 35 1.8 VC.
@@DustinAbbottTWI They could have publlished it for sony and canon mirroless, because its the new era of cameras to go mirrorless. Pretty sure they would have more sales that way.
I'm not sure what the market share is for those two combined, but it isn't yet as big as the market for Canon and Nikon DSLRs...which is what they targeted with this release.
There won't be a Sony version of this exact lens. Tamron has done all of their mirrorless design separately, and this particular lens is designed around the backfocus of DSLRS
@@DustinAbbottTWI 35mm 1.4 is my favorite lense. i have the rokinon which has been great but i don't totally trust it. had to send one back and they can have problems. i was really hoping on the tameron. thanks for getting back and your channel is great. cheers
It's a matter of logistics. It takes money and time to make comparisons happen, and I've just done a major 6 lens comparison project that cost me hundreds of dollars.
Hardly anyone uses hyper focal distances? Are you having a laugh? Apart from nailing focus, its the second most important sharpness criteria for landscape images.
I don't think that I said it was unimportant; I said that hardly anyone uses it...which is true. The vast majority of modern photographers do not understand hyperfocal marking at all.
I have to say this review is not a review, it's more a regurgitation of specs which anyone can easily look up. I bought this lense yesterday and am interested to see how it performs. No information here on performance. You spent so much time talking about dimensions, I almost fell asleep with boredom. Who gives a care if its 0.7mm shorter than the Canon f/1.4. That's probably why it is called "first look"... If you follow Dustin's channel you will notice that his review are often divided into parts, usually starting with build, handling, weather sealing, market position etc , then other episodes cover image quality, autofocus, etc. Which by the way Dustin also tells you he will, so with a bit of patience you will get the information you are after.

It's an amazing lens, and such a good value.
is this lens can be use in sony alpha 7 for film footage?
Yes, though you won't get very good autofocus via adapter.
I can't wait for your full review Dustin. The MTF tests showed this lens to be something special.
I've just uploaded the image quality breakdown. It will release next week.
Very good introduction and as always, I am looking forward to your in the field review with lens comparisons.
Next week we'll break down the image quality.

Hey Dustin. How does it perform via the Sigma MC-11?

@@DustinAbbottTWI couldn't this be fixed by a firmware update of the MC-11?
I just bought the Tampon 35 SP F1.8 VC, is it worth the upgrade to its new big brother F1.4 Dustin?
Optically the new lens is more special, though the 1.8 is very good (and much smaller and lighter). It depends on your priorities.
Dustin, would you please indicate the cameras your review applies to in the title.
I'm usually very specific about that information in my introduction. There's only so much room in the title space.
