- Dogs want, and even need, rules to follow! Consistency makes the world predictable to them, so they become more confident and less stressed.
- It’s OK to put a sweater or a coat on your dog during walks if you have a toy breed or a breed with short hair. Your best bet is a blend of washable wool and cotton or acrylic.
- They rely on your body language to try to figure out how you feel or what you think.
- Remember this: what’s funny for a human, can be hurtful and offensive for an animal.
- Your dog can not only read your body language, but also the leash tension levels. When you pull it, you signal that you're tense, nervous, or on alert, causing stress.
- Most dogs love swimming in the open water because it makes them feel free. However, even breeds that love swimming in lakes, lying in puddles, and running through lawn sprinklers might hate taking baths.
- Dr. Alexandra Horowitz has pointed out the typical signs of a dog feeling uncomfortable during a hug: ears pinned back, lip licking, yawning, and trying to get away.
- Dogs are afraid of loud sounds and can’t understand what you want from them. If you’re unhappy with your dog’s behavior, take a certain pose of your choosing, and make an upset facial expression.
- Your pet needs to release its energy, and if you can’t help with this, it’ll find its own way. And you won’t like it. Playing with your dog is important.
- Spend as much time as possible with it when you’re home. Follow a precise schedule.
- Veterinary behaviorist Dr. Ilana Reisner explains that your dog’s character or mood can be different, and even the most sociable and kind dog can be reactive.
- If you’ve noticed that your dog is sad, pay attention to your own state of mind. Your pet feels your mood, and if you feel bad, your dog can become depressed too.

One of my dogs used to get overly excited when outside was mentioned (unfortunately he passed away). So I started spelling out the word to my husband when asking if they had been O U T S I D E. Within a week that one dog started to understand what I was meaning when I would spell outside and get overly excited again. And on hugging all my dogs have wagged their tails and bounced around afterward licking me crazily. One of my pits even comes up and puts his head on your shoulder when needing a hug.

I actually have a really close relationship with my uncles dog! We took care of him when he was a puppy for 2 weeks at a time, and he’s a fully grown dog now. He has the most adorable personality and he’s a medium sized dog, he also somehow seems to understands everything we say!
As far as the bath one, my pup got over her fears a little when I bought her her own personalized pool and started playing in the water with her. I think hovering over here while bathing didn’t help either, so when I squatted down, she felt more comfortable. She even tries to help out and lifts all her legs now :)

When my dogs are upset, I get to their level, pet them, and talk to them in a calm soothing voice.
This channel is so insightful! I love the fitness and health ones. Just recently started my fitness channel and love these tips. But then of course as a dog owner I had to watch this one too!! Equally as valuable ! Especially the body language communication point
My dog loves people. She loves getting pet/ hugged and loves other dogs and cats. she is very sweet. If you are sad and cry she will lick your tears way. She loves when even strangers pet her because she is around people a lot and gets a lot of food, toys, and love :)

My 80 pound heeler mix understands I love to give him hugs lol. When I come home he pushes his head into my chest and i'll give him this really cute hug around his head for second or two. Its freaking adorable~ but I know he doesn't like it much. I'm pretty sure he just does it for my sake

Very informative and thoughtful video. I think routine and consistency helps dogs feel safe. My dog is a rescue dog and even though we've had him since he was 4 months old (he's 12 years old now) there are still signs of the bad treatment he had by whoever owned then abandoned him in the first few months of his life. He hates people smoking near him so we make sure no one does. He is afraid of young men he doesn't know so we don't make him be stroked by everyone who passes if we see he looks worried. He doesn't like being left alone so we make sure this is rare and when necessary, as short as possible and with a routine where he has voices on the radio, toys to play with, and we always leave him with a treat so he sees us leaving as being more of a pleasant experience. He has his walks at around the same time everyday. He has an inner body clock (like most dogs I think!) and reminds us when it's walkie time lol! He comes for cuddles and leans on people he loves. He was scared of water so my daughter was so gentle and patient with him on holidays over the years, encouraging him in shallow rivers and the sea edge, staying with him, playing with him, and now he adores playing in the water and it's such a joy to see. He is such a happy dog now and seeing a dog enjoy life (as dog owners know) is such a reward for us humans. It's worth watching videos like this and learning about what we need to do to enable our pets to be happy and confident, they deserve it and are such a joy :)

If your dog is sleeping too much, that means it is getting old, dealing with stress, and could have a serious disease that you need to pay attention to.
Sometimes dogs sleep for 12 or more hours. But that is completely normal!
Just take them to the vet if you are getting too worried.

All animals express communication through body language and that is universal. Only a very few ones can understand some verbal human language. Even if you don't talk to your pet and have good body language skills for them, you are on your way up to a very good if not the best relationship with your pet. The best yet to avoid stress to your pet is to watch your own body language and most of the time dogs can get upset if their pet owners give them the wrong signals. That's what I learned for today. Dogs are individuals, not conformed robots. Your dog likes to be hugged but that won't necessarily mean that it is true for all dogs. If they love it, good. If they don't, stop. It's not bull. It's just different in your case.

If I notice my dog is sad, I normally try to figure out what's wrong first, but if there's nothing that she wants or needs, I just give her some attention and try to comfort her the same way she comforts me when I'm sad and she always seems to be super appreciative of it. She loves licking my face and asking for hugs(she's a lab who will literally press her chest against yours and wrap her neck around you, so yes, a dog who loves hugs).

Thankfully I don't tease dogs, never have. I was raised by a hybrid wolf so I learned has he did. I use body language more because I never spoke until 9 years old. I learned how to communicate through my body like my hybrid wolf. Unfortunately this didn't help me learn human communication. Double edge sword. Something I am still trying to work on even years later. Also don't blame dogs for not liking hugs, I'm autistic I don't do well with hugs either.
Edit: to help Alpha calm down during stressful situations like electrical storms and fireworks or police sirens, I have a weighted blanket just for him. He feels so much better when he's got the weighted blanket on him and is laying beside me. This may not work for all pets but it is something you can certainly try.

Yes I agree in regards to allowing others constant access to a dog family member. I am getting into the habit of when others wish to approach her that it is best to ask her by gently approaching her and basically reading her body language , if she does not respond then like us she is not in the mood and if she is receptive then she is , simple. Generally she is keen but like us she does not always wish to say hello , which is fair enough and I respect how she feels and try my best to act accordingly and encourage others to do the same around her as she is NOT a pet but a valued family member

mine too but obviously not by strangers, like he gets visibly upset if I hug my daughter and dont hug him afterwards... I think it's because he may not recognize hugging fully but he recognizes it's a bonding thing between me and "my pack" (daughter, family, close friends) so he doesn't like NOT being part of it... I've also had him 10 years and I started hugging him as a puppy so hes really used to it

You dhouldn't be putting a Leash on any Dog to begin with, always a Harness instead. It doesn't choke them and allows you to better control their behavior while being far more comfortable to them.

My dog chewed through her harness. My mom got mad and said she isnt gonna get another one. She keeps telling me to take her on for a walk but I refuse each time cos I dont like the idea of walking her with the leash on her collar cause she does pull on the leash. I told my mom I wont walk her until she gets a new harness for my dog

When my dog is upset I sit down on the floor and pat my lap and she puts her head and front feet on me. And i'm really not allowed to talk to anyone else or she will start vocalizing too.
When my dog is upset I like show her love and make sure that I spend more time with her. She usually initiates hugs when she's in the mood or when she senses that I'm upset or sad.
