    We bought a Model Y standard (built in China) version in February in Portugal. This is my first EV and we find the car to be a great luxury vehicle. We had range anxiety for about one week during which we discovered that chargers are almost everywhere. We already have 11,000 km on it and we don't yet have the option to charge at home. We need a second smaller car so we are hoping to get the Model 2 ... hopefully very soon.

    Hi Sam. Absolutely. We have an Atto 3 and this has the BYD Blade battery. It was one of the main reasons I purchased the car last January. My new Tesla MY RWD here in Australia has the LFP battery but I understand it's the CATL version as our Teslas are coming from Shanghai. I wish it could be the BYD Blade battery but I have no say in the matter. I'm sure the CATL is also good.

  • @jimgraham6722
    @jimgraham6722 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Atto3 has a 400V 61KWhr 129S blade cell battery. 60KWHR is usable, 1KWHr is buffer.
    To be on the safe side, I dont let mine drop below 10%, ie 6KWHr.
    The safety of the blade format lies in it being thin and spread out. If you stick a nail through it the electrodes are only penetrated once. In a jelly roll battery a nail would penetrate the electrodes many times.

    Generally its a good move - I mean start of production of base model in Berlin. What is positive is a softer suspension and better seats from Berlin and new colors, specifically quicksilver. On the other hand I will miss standard red color option. What I am hoping for, is to have similarly to model 3 in US have an long range LFP battery option so to have dual motor affordable option.

    I would love to have one, unfortunately they are way too expensive for me. Hopefully I can get a second hand one in 3 or 4 years time. Which brings me to structural battery packs, hopefully the batteries will last at least 8-10 years, what happens when they do need replacing? I am aware that a few older EVs have been given a new lease of life by replacing the battery, can you still do that with a structural battery?

    • @4literv6

    • @ohger1
      @ohger1 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Physically swapping the battery isn't that big a deal (certainly easier than changing out a gas engine or automatic transmission). The question is whether the manufacturer will make *new* packs available for any length of time. If Tesla continues to make the same exact pack for many years including updated models, then they will be available from salvage yards for a very long time. In any case, I would think that any Tesla battery would last 15 years and 300K miles.

    • @4literv6
      @4literv6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ohger1 there is also a growing aftermarket for refurbished or renewed ev pack's. Even one's where they take out all the old cells and put in new ones of better energy density. There are companies doing it for bmw i3s, Nissan leafs using prismatic lfp cells with double the capacity and even various year's tesla model s&x. I think that industry will grow exponentially alongside the most popular ev model's sold. 🤔
      Just look at what our next energy did with an older model s pack? They removed all the Panasonic cells, swapped in a killer hybrid lfp&nmc setup of their own design&chemistry. To more than double the total pack capacity from the same shell of 100kwh-204kwh.
      They bolted it right back in the car and went 808 miles in the summer on 1 charge and over 750 miles in Detroit winter at hwy speeds.
      Only gained about 350# to. 😎👍🏻

    Most parts of an Electric car can easily last 20 years, but the batteries do degrade, and occasional cells will fail, and when they are in a series wiring configuration, an open circuit in a cell will turn that whole sub-unit dead. The current Tesla batteries are very difficult to repair (about $5000 at Gruber Auto in California), but a blade battery is designed to be modular, and should have a much lower repair cost. I am hoping that all EV manufacturers move to modular battery systems.

    • @FrunkensteinVonZipperneck
      @FrunkensteinVonZipperneck ปีที่แล้ว

      Gruber is repairing batteries from 2008 - FIFTEEN YEARS AGO. Those batteries are obsolete, but still can be repaired. But there is not point. Batteries will last 4 times as long as the car.

      @@sunrisejak2709 Just plain obvious. Tesla cranks keep banging on about Tesla's vertical integration and here they are outsourcing the most expensive/important part of a BEV.

      @@mickzed6393 Yes, unfortunately the top 10 EV global battery suppliers are 7 Chinese, 2 S. Korean , and 1 Japanese. Even Tesla boasting of vertical integration is nowhere on that list.

    I don"t want to give any money to mainland Chinese industry if I can avoid it, so it's a "no" from me as a consumer.
    As an engineer, I'm glad to see the innovation. Still waiting for a 400-mile range (at 100% charge) EV in the 30,000 USD and below price point before I leap. My 2021 Accord Hybrid will be my DD until then.

    So soon we will see these BYD Tesla cars on the roads on fire and in many videos on youtube like we see the BYD cars on fire in China. Great idea Elon.

    The range of EV is still insignificant compared to fossil fuel power, if usable range becomes 550 miles I will be purchasing an EV.

      For you that makes sense. For the other 98% of the population, range only needs to be 150 miles, so 300 mile cars are more than enough. My 300 mile Tesla can run over 4 hours on the highway, way longer than I want to drive without a break to pee, stretch my legs and back, and get a coffee or food. A typical stop for any of those adds more hours to driving.

      @@thomaswilson2917 I do understand that a lot of vehicles have 375 to 400mile ranges on a tank of fuel but in 5 minutes you can refuel. I did alot of research before i purchased my latest vehicle it gets 26 MPG and caries 30 +2reserve gallons of fuel. The lack of recharging stations and recharge times at some of the stations prohibits my use of EVs.I travel dailey and drive 600-1400 miles a week for IT work. I can assure you if the range and charging situation changes I will be using an EV.

      @@michaelchafe1889 if you could charge at home you would not need to charge on the road.
      1400 miles is 200 a day.

      Also only cost me $6.
      How much in fuel does it cost you to go 200 miles.
      Also since last June I have put about 15000 miles of long distance road trips around the USA
      Never had an issue charging.
      If you can't charge at home I would not of bought my EV.
      Closest supercharger is a 20 minute drive and I don't usually go in that direction.

      2 4500 mile trips and just came back from a 3500 mile road trip. All since last July.
      Just trying to understand your situation.

      Did you try plugshare to look for fast chargers on your route?

    Thought all teslas used high explosive batteries. Guess not. LFP is awesome. You can get a short ofc but explosions and fires from piercing dont work on LFP. And yes good LFP should only lose 20% capacity pr 6000 cycles or almost 2 decades if you cycle it once a day. This is great.
