    I have to give you props. I read through a lot of the conversations you had with people that left less than desirable comments. You didn't run from them you face them head on and had good answers for the questions and comments. Way to keep a level head. I do handyman work on the side and my prices are not as high as your but it's not my regular job and the cost of living isn't as high as your area. I just wanted to let you know how impressed I was on the way you handled it all.

    The easy way to estimate is knowing for whom you will be working for, a low income people cannot pay what a middle class could and so on. I charge so I can make a living and feel my heart that I am helping people . I have made some good friends 😀

    I think your prices are fine, if people complain about other handyman doing the same job for a lower price then he’s probably in the 80% that failed in the first four years. Good videos and you seem as a successful business owner, keep up the good work.

    I recently ended a job relationship with a customer who after several jobs decided I was charging to much. Her thoughts were that because she bought the supplies on clearance my labor should be less because it is low income housing. I tried to say just because you buy cheap tires doesn't decrease the the cost of putting them on.

    Years ago I tried that with quickbooks but I found that every jobsite had it's own unique degree of difficulty due to the surroundings. (ie. ceiling height, kids running around, dogs, furniture, landscaping.) which would not make standardized pricing practical. I would also throw a 12 volt cordless drill in my estimate bag and maybe a tool belt. I'd rather work than drive, that's just me though.

    Hi, I'm looking to starting my own handyman business and am a little confused with pricing. For example, if a homeowner asked to have all electrical outlets replace in her home one day and let's say it runs her $500 and also wants to have a wax ring replaced and it runs her I don't know $150. Would that be considered a $650 project or two separate projects? I would really appreciate your input.

    • @liers99
      @liers99 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would consider that 2 separate projects. They are unrelated and being done at separate times. I would estimate them separately and invoice them separately as well.

    Hey Lee, do you have a trailer hitch lock? Have you seen those hitch ball locks? Makes it almost impossible for anyone to drag your trailer away. You are in CA!

    • @markman63
      @markman63 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here in the bay area you can't even leave a trailer or truck with tools in it in your drive way. If they can't steal the trailer they'll cut a hole in the side and steal your tools. Thanks to the miracle of cordless power tools.
      And those hitch lock are only a minor delay for thieves

    Been doing handyman repairs for almost 10 years in Hawai'i and I know I should be charging more but how does one know how far to push it? I'm at 30 per hour and it is pretty much just time and materials so far. As and retired mechanic, was used to working flat rate from a manual that said how much a job paid hourly. All my advertising is work of mouth plus having several real estate agents sending plenty to me. I was intrigued with your webb sites mentioned but couldn't really see how to use them. Have you done an in depth video to help use them a bit easier or help get started? I know I need more organization than I've got right now! LOL

    • @handymanjourney

      Hey Roy....now you sound HONEST...I been at it for 30 years ...here in the uk.... and i make a living..like yourself no ads just word and mouth...and i tell my customers " I have made all the mistakes" Theres no substitute for experience. I once fitted a kitchen from IKEA and the customer showed me their quote....i did not attempt to go near that price ...I charge for a fair days work and what i think its worth.People use people like us because we dont charge like the bigboys.Its a bit cheeky to charge their prices when you dont have their overheads and you clearly have LIMITED experience.

      Not to mention the experience a confident handyman has with them. The most important tool a handyman can have. If I don't have the knowledge or the experience to do a particular job . I will not do it . It saves a whole lot of trouble in the long run for me and the customer. So don't take ajob you aren't sure of just for the job

    My only issue w your estimating software are the prices for each individual tasks.
    I much prefer handing my estimates with an overall price.
    I feel that it’s easier on the eyes as some things cost more than others and the last thing I would want this to have a client question me on individual costs.

      Another reason for not itemizing the prices: The customer will sometimes want you to come do items numbers 1, 2, and 6. They expect the same pricing even though they've cut the job to a fraction of what they originally talked about having you do. (The 100 widget price for 7 widgets please!) Not always worth it if there's not as much to do when you get there. I price by the overall job. List of items to do, what I'm supplying, what they're supplying, what the total is they'll have to pay for the above, and what the payment arrangements will be. But I realize we all do things differently by what works for us.

    Im a handyman in the business for 26 year's. I have my own company. I'm old school in my trade and estimate. Most of my customers are referral. Im in south Florida and those prices would never fly here. I can look at a job and know what it will cost both in labor and material. Plus taxes. But i never give a customer the price on the spot. I will give them an guesstimate aka ball park figures and its always higher. The reason is this. I always add 20% more for what i call the. WHAT IF'S. Unseen Thing's behind the walls. Good luck with those prices brother.

    Installed that exact same door sweep two weeks ago, make sure you have a large enough gap between the bottom of the door and the threshold. I learned that to hard way and had to take the door off the hinges and saw off about 1/4 " off the bottom. This threshold was as flat as it could go, so maybe you will be able to adjust that one and have better luck.

    • @davfinport
      @davfinport 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, that seems way too cheap, at least in my area. 150 would be the charge here, plus the part. You will have to cut it too. Let me know if it is easier, my way was about 2 hours to make it right.

      Yes thank you for your comment David! I have encountered some of these that are a pain! This one has an adjustable door threshold and a pretty even gap so I just estimated that it will take me about 15 minutes, maybe 30, but there is always room for learning! I hope I dont encounter any issues!

    Does anyone charge for mileage/time getting supplies? Also when does the free estimate end?

    • @TobiasRaphael1
      @TobiasRaphael1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Howard Yes, I charge for getting supplies. As far as the free estimates, I learned from another contractor to charge by the hour when there is a laundry list of jobs with too many variables. A way to win those jobs is to give them a range price... between this and that, barring any inforseen issues etc. People are usually understanding of this. Also, to give them an idea on total cost, add the jobs up in your mind by how long each one will take you.... half day or whole day time frames and then tell them supplies are extra - give a range on that too. This gives you some cushion room and gives the customer an immediate number or range to make a decision/ask questions and for you to feel them out and seal the deal. Don't waste more time than you have to... life really IS short!
      The free estimate ends if when they start asking for estimates on things other than what you were called there to give a price on. If they say they are 'just wondering' what it would cost or for something they plan in the future, just tell them you will look at it (after they hire you for the job you came to look at) then and give them a price. You can think about it and not waste too much time by doing it on a coffee break. Hope this helps!

With this method the homeowner doesn't have to guess what it will all end up costing, they can pick what they do or don't want and you can focus on being efficient to maximize your earnings and your quality will have them bragging about you and calling you back for more. You and my buddy Matt down in SC are my favorite TH-cam handyguys and I want to see you guys kill it out there. I watch a few other guys that really disappoint the hell out of me. I'm a carpenter by trade and worked for myself doing remodeling and repair work back before the economy slowed way down. Thats what I love and I'm planing on heading back in that direction, but I love my job at the moment and I'm torn.
      It looks like the need is definitely out there. I've been remodeling a bathroom for my parents here in Florida this week and I've definitely been bitten by the bug again.
      I get a kick out of watching videos on TH-cam and seeing all the different styles and thoughts about pricing and I could definitely tell you some stories about under bidding. That software you were using looks pretty cool.

    Totally disagree my friend. I don't do free estimates. First call is $39 Assessment/Service Call. I show up on time, and prepared to fix something. They know they have problems or they wouldn't have called me. In less than an hour, working from my service truck tools and supply, I can do a hell of a lot of good work. After that, I own them with zero competition. If I have to go shopping, or it's more than an hour, then, an Agreement is signed and down payment money flows to me on the spot. Listen, Pro time is too valuable to to waste it driving to give free estimates.

    • @Boogan-D
      @Boogan-D 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also, don't let customers buy supplies and materials. You control all buying so you can buy your favorite brands that you know you can quickly and expertly install. Yeah it’s hard to price stuff because what’s easy to you is impossible for someone else. I feel I price very low but I tend to work for people I know so I feel bad charging to much. What usually happens though is the people pay you but then add to it because they know your not charging enough. If you asked for that much in the beginning though they’d think it’s to high. Another way I charge is a low rate per hour. That threshold I’d probably only charge $20 for plus material but I’d charge to go get it from the store too. The fan probably $50 because it as well is 5-10 mins. Nothing pisses me off more than a guy spending 20 mins at my house then asking for $300-$500. I gotta eat too overcharging for quick jobs will turn people off. Save someone money and they’ll always call you first

      Mega Dave I'm not looking for a debate. I truely appreciate your opinion and I really appreciate you taking the time to comment back, most people who leave mean comments won't reply so I appreciate your willingness to have a conversation. I have plenty of videos on how I price and how I came to that price for me personally, you can check those out on my channel, I would appreciate your opinion. I have figured out what my hourly/ weekly/ monthly income needs to be to support my family and my business and that is how I figure my rates. Typically my hourly figure comes out around . I know that sounds high but I am not an employee making that I am a business owner and that is definitely not what I pay my self, my take home pay is much less. Where are you located and what is your hourly rate? I understand that I can always grow as a person so I look forward to your opinion!
