  • I recently quit my salary job as a Safety Professional to pursue my passion of DIY / Handyman type work! As you all know from past videos on my channel, I've always loved working with my hands and taking on my own home improvement projects. This will be the first of many Work VLOGS that I post taking you with me so that you can experience what the daily life looks like for a professional handyman.

    Congratulations on your journey being self employed. For your next moss protection job you may want to get a soft wash system to wash the roof. The materials used for the washing will kill the different types of growth that may grow on roofs. Soft washing an average size roof may take maybe an hour to an hour n half but you can charge at least $400 dollars n up. Again congratulations and continued success.

    I like your fence idea with the wire. Do you need to dato the lumber to channel the wire when you have secured the wire placement with the staples? I'm just wondering because it would be a time savor obviously if you didn't cut all the lumber. Please let me know what you think, as I have not built this style of fencing before. I am not being critical of your work, you seem to be a capable handy man. I do know that time on the job is money, and the more time we save on the job the more money added to the bottom line. Thank you so much Connor for posting your on job site videos. They will help many thinking about getting into this business like myself.

    Awesome to see you making it!!! I’m on a similar journey. My state is pretty strict on certification and licensing so I’m not able to advertise until I jump through all those hoops. I have been able to keep steady work through social media apps and such fir cash only jobs . How do you advertise for your business??

    • @TheModernMann
      @TheModernMann  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awesome! I’m glad you took the leap and are getting work! Honestly, In the handyman line of business, word of mouth is the best form of advertising. I’ve gotten so much work from neighbors of customers I’ve had. I’m also a friend with a realtor and he uses me for literally anything from cleaning a house for sale to fixing broken appliances in his rentals to installing hardwood flooring in his neighbors. I’ve been pretty blessed to have him as a friend! But I also do a lot of advertising on a social media platform called “Nextdoor”. It’s an app like Facebook but it’s only the people in your city or town. It’s typically used for “lost dog” posts or “mail thief” type stuff but it’s been really beneficial because it allows me to target people within 10-15 miles from my house which keeps commute time down

      Yeah sorry about that. I made an executive decision to stop filming and posting because it takes away from the efficiency of my work. But to give you an update, I’m fully booked with at least 2-3 jobs a day for 3 months. I feel bad for telling new customers that they have to wait 2-3 months before I can get to them but at the same time it just reassures me that I don’t have to worry about whether I’ll have enough work to pay my bills. It’s pretty amazing how much work is out there, it just takes those first few customers who are repeat customers to really fill your schedule out nicely

    The only thing you need to consider is when it comes time to collect Social Security at retirement age they base it on your lifetime proven income... If you have No claim income or Very little claimed income you may ruin your Social security when that time come around & trust me it creeps up quicker than you can imagine...

    The fact that you haven't posted a follow up tells me you have not continued as a handyman or you are so busy , there is no time to record and post.
    Hope it's the latter :) I am also thinking about quitting my salary job and doing the same. However, I am having a hard time deciding to give up a salary to the unknown. How did you get the courage?

    • @TheModernMann
      @TheModernMann  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Haha it’s absolutely the latter. To be honest, I’m not patient enough to have to deal with camera set up and placement while I working. I just like to “kill it and bill it” lol but work is plentiful. I started doing it on the side while in my salary job and once I got to about a 4-6 week wait list, that’s when I decided to take control of my success and quit my salary job. One thing I wish I would have done differently before I quit was take some 101 courses on the financial part of being self employed (Quarterly taxes, W-2s for sub contractors). But I eventually learned through my mistakes and have grown more knowledgeable in that area. I’m not where I want to be yet but I’m continually growing.
      Good luck on your decision!

      @@TheModernMann how often do you sub out jobs? Would it be a good idea to sub out easy jobs? I was thinking of just being a middle man/driver and pick up people outside of home depot and just drop and pick them up all day, maybe 3 groups of 4. Would they also require w-2’s?

      @@builditbrother4172 thats going to be a horrible idea. both your workers and the owners are gonna hate you. the owners because you bid the job, then got some weirdo they havent met and you dont know that are going to be in their house. Then the workers are going to realize what your making and will go to the owner direct to cut you out. Alot of hassle and trouble for a little bit of money, and its going to be uphill battle to get customers with bad referals. Horrible idea... do the work yourself or get vetted, qualified people you know to do it, that you can trust. Easier said than done.
