    We seem to be covering an awful lot of Taito games recently on Battle Of The Ports and here we go again with Darius Gaiden.
    Please note that the PlaySation 2 and Xbox Toato Memories / Legends version is not featured because it's nothing more than an emulation of the arcade rom and in the case of the PS2 release, not a very good emulation.
    Time Code
    00:28 - Arcade
    03:54 - PlayStation
    05:52 - Saturn
    08:01 - Windows '95
    10:12 - All versions side by side
    Enjoy!

    I'd never played Darius Gaiden before, neither at the time of his release, nor on emulator. A couple of days I took the compilation for the Switch and WOW, it's one of the most amazing shoot'em ups I've ever played. It's definitely in a top ten all time. Incredible graphics, crazy sound (it's like listening to an opera), immediate but deep gameplay... a masterpiece.

    Of all the Darius games, this was the one I remember the most. I'm glad to have the Saturn version of Darius Gaiden as a kid, and it's one hell of a 2D shooter from Taito. Also pretending to forget Acclaim published it in the US, like various other Taito games for that system.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Taito really got shafted with that Acclaim deal. Acclaim got to release many Taito games in the West making it seem as if they produced products of quality while Taito in Japan released crap by Acclaim such as that awful Spirit of Speed on the Dreamcast.

    The Windows 95 version expected the user to raise the volume of the CD music through the hardware volume control on the CD drive (back when computer CD drive weren't just a CD drive but had an independent built-in audio CD player with playback control buttons, volume wheel and a headphone jack) or through Windows volume mixer for the CD audio drive. Your machine must have the volume on the CD audio player set too low.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well that's a bummer for modern PCs. Yeah, I remember when drives had headphone jacks and volume wheels on them :)

      So the music on all ports including Legends is supposed to be low? That blows; at least in CS mostly with headphones you can hear it fairly well

  • @chunkycjw
    @chunkycjw 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    The Saturn really was a 2D power-house, I think this is why it did so much better in Japan because they still loved their 2D fighters, shoot em ups and top down rpgs (and still do) when the rest of the world was getting wrapped up in 3D polygon gaming.
    I always remember Capcom games Xmen, SF Alpha etc running better on the Saturn as it had more ram for animation and even had ram expansion cartridges for Capcom and Neo Geo fighting games.

      It was just harder to program for than the PS1, developers who could get the the twin Sega Hitachi cpu's working together and talking to each other could do amazing things.
      VF2 was very high Rez and the developer behind Exhumed, Duke Nukem 3D and Quake really pushed the Saturn too.

    It's always good to see another lovely Taito game getting some love. Darius Gaiden is a lovely game. It's really hard and unforgiving at times but, boy, does the game compel you to have just 'one more try'.
    The presentation's as nice as one would expect from a Darius game and the ethereal electronica is just so good.
    Thanks for making and sharing this. :)

    And the winner is... Sega Saturn, once again the king of 2D arcade ports is on top! You mentioned how the PS2 version of Darius Gaiden is emulated from the arcade with slowdown and horrendous 480i video resolution, but how about the original Xbox emulated version that is also included in Taito Legends 2? Is it any better than the PS2 one?

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I beleive the Xbox version doesn't run in 480i or suffer from the slowdown issues however I've not personally seen that version.

    • @hugo-garcia
      @hugo-garcia 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course you can. Xbox is the 480P power house, Taito legends is one of them. Here is a list with displays resolutions of xbox games.

    • @gaminggoof1542
      @gaminggoof1542 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He hardly spoke of the PS version. As for slowdown it works to my benefit like with G darius as these games are notoriously bullet hellish. The port works fine for me and owning a PS my Legends copy is the only way I can play it, but it is still Gaiden and I love this game. The game still looks beautiful to me even though it's hand art, especially the space levels. My only complaints are (let me know if it's true for all of them) the fact I keep my bomb upgrades no matter what but if I die there goes my shield and weapons, unlike my G where no matter what I keep my ranks throughout the game. Secondly he was right about the controls though as while I'd love to use my d pad it's TOO stiff so I use my joystick. Lastly it seems like the music is too low, mainly self, EEG and axon, is that the port? But as the game it is I love it

I just love the beautiful graphics, uniquely otherworldly soundtrack, tons of action and well designed stages and some of the coolest Boss designs ever. @@RetroCore I've been trying to install the PSOne version of Darius Gaiden on my PSP, because realistically, it's the only version of the game that has any chance of running smoothly on it. Unfortunately, the freaky music won't play no matter what I do, and that's a big part of the game's draw. I could forgive the PSOne port's other failings, like the lower number of onscreen enemies, but losing the soundtrack is a bridge too far.
      Regrettably, I may have to buy Cozmic Collection for the Switch to get Darius Gaiden on the go. Having already dropped a big chunk of cash on G-Darius a few weeks ago, I'm not eager to spend another twenty bucks on another fishy shooter. (Oh well, at least it's not Deep Blue.)

    When I played this game in my Taito compilation of PS2, I thought that there is something wrong...previously I enjoyed it in my Saturn a few years ago. I thought that it was just my imagination, but I didn´t have the Saturn to confirm it. Now, thanks to your vid I see it clearly. Fortunatelly, all the ports of this game are enjoyable enough.

    Darius Gaiden is easily in my Top 10 shooters list. My good friend that passed away back in 2008 I remember when we were younger him and I would go back and forth...even skipping school just to hang out and try to beat this game with the different paths. Nostalgia for sure! I had the Windows version back in the day that I got from Electronics Boutique.

    Love this game so much. I had it for my Saturn back in the day and loved it then too. It's easily in my top 3 shooters of all time and very possible it is #1. The difficulty level is just right, the soundtrack is amazing and the Graphics still look phenomenal. Nowadays I play this through Mame but damn that Saturn port is so good it's easily the next best way to play it if for some odd reason someone has something against playing through Mame. The Windows version just butchered the sound and the Playstation just feels off.

    • @RetroCore
      @RetroCore  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Saturn version is pretty much arcade perfect and I feel that the Windows port is just as good besides the messed up sound effects. The PlayStation port is just crap. Many of the background effects are missing. Check out the underwater sections. The arcade, Saturn and Windows ports all have a wavy background while the playstation is perfectly still.

    SEGA Saturn wins again baby! Never cared for the Darius series personally, though I have to say that I really like Gaiden on Saturn.

    I am a shoot'em up fan, but I really couldn't get into Darius series. I think the culprit may be anti-climatic music. Now, when I'm listening to it, it sounds great, but it doesn't really fit the game for me. Additionaly, it takes too many power ups to have a fully powered up weapon. That wouldn't be a problem, if you didn't lose everything upon death, making already hard game almost impossible to come back after death, but that's just a minor complaint.
    Maybe I should give it a second... a third chance?

      Darius is a series that can take some time to get in to. I was never really a big fan myself. In fact I though Darius gaiden was total crap when I bought it back in 1996. however the series does grow on you. Now I'm a big fan of this Darius and G-Darius.
