Hey Guys, I recently picked one of these 6Ds - body only. Do not fool yourself thinking that it only has 1 cross type focus. All i can say is WOW!!! It is sharp and you will going to love it. Just thought to share it with you :d Thanks!!!
I shoot hockey for a pro hockey team here in Denmark using the 6D with the canon 70-200 f2,8. And i must say that the focus is okay really, i dont have any problems really, i am also shooting at the player bench the whole game because i am the team photographer but other then that, it works amazing!
I love video reviews where it is so easy to hang on to every word and asimulate data. Great job Jared. Looking to replace my aging 5D classic for street portraiture
I think what Jared did was practical. Not everyone can afford a full-frame Canon DSLR and mount a Canon lens on it. The majority of us will opt for a hybrid. I also appreciate his honesty in telling the world that this is not the best camera to auto-focus in low light. I read plenty of reviews before I purchased my Canon 6D. All of them literally sang songs about this camera's ability to focus in low light. After buying the camera and using it with Canon's latest 24-70mm L2 lens, I discovered that that was simply not true. There were more misses than hits. And only the centre focusing point did any good at all. Using the other option, was an exercise in futility. The only consolation for me is that I will seldom require to shoot in almost or complete darkness. I find Jared's review of this camera to be informative, down to earth, fair, honest and practical. Thanks Jared.
Of course the center point is the only one working in low light since it is the only one that is cross-typed. The praises on the 6D's ability to focus are based on that center point that can read up to -3EV, when the 5DIII has only -2EV. If you or Jared can't get any good results, of course it must be the camera's fault, not your lack of knowledge and understanding of how a camera works.
Behram Cooper I was in the exact same boat as you Behram. I ended up selling the 6d with all my canon gear and went back to Nikon. Got a D600/D610 and couldn't be happier. Not until you end up using both can you possibly appreciate what the Nikon brings to the table.
I went back to the nikon video and honestly i bet no one could tell the difference between the two. And thats really the thing, all that matters is you capture the moment. It doesnt matter if it was the nikon or the canon.
I have a Canon 6d and have to agree with Jessica in that the focusing is not that bad. I shot a low light concert with just one light on stage and I was really impressed with the shots. I did not feel I had to work hard at all to get those shots and could really take time to compose my shots. So far...I'm loving this camera!
Not a fan boy for any company and can take or leave some of your videos but I really appreciate how real and honest you were in this review in taking the camera through its paces... Thanks for helping with my own decision in which full frame to invest in as a advanced enthusiast.
thanks for the review.. i went back and forth over the last few weeks prior to purchasing a d600.. i still wanted to see your review.. some of the points you mentioned I agree on and it helped my decision in going with the nikon.. thanks again.. glad I found your site and videos.. thx
That is interesting about sending photos right to the desk by clicking and sending, that is cool. If you can live with the autofocus than sure. I liked this camera.
I am more concerned personally about stills but the video for how I was using it was perfectly fine. Its not a pro camera but its not being sold as one either.
i had the same issue i went for the 6D and honestly i love the the low light performance and image quality i still use my 7d but more for speed you will notice the difference in the speed of the af and the top plat being polycarbanate and the buttons feel less resistant than the 7d but after a while i believe you will love it
All of this stuff I really dont know much about. I think my shutter speed was around 1/50th. Im not a film maker, just picking up bits and pieces here and there on that stuff.
I had actually been playing with the 6d center point focus with the ai servo in store and didn't think it was too bad with people walking by, but I wanted to see what people thought with real action. I'm glad to see that you were thorough and even used the center point focus to get the best shots and see how it did in the best settings. Thanks!
I bought the 6D in March 2014. I chose to get another lens rather than going with the 5D Mk3 and I am happy with my decision. Overall I love the camera (I have had the XTi, 1D Mk2N, 5D, 50D, 7D, T2i) however the AF system isn't the greatest. Yes it locks on in ultra-low light, but I find I have a much lower in focus hit rate than I did on the 5D, 50D or the 7D. I am shooting about 2500 pictures a month at events, concerts, portraits, and a few landscapes. I wish the other 10 AF points would have been cross type or even capable down to 2.8. The high ISO sensor is the real gem. As w/ Jared,. I have gotten usable shots at 25600, and coming from a 5D this is amazing, now I can shoot w/o a speedlight in near darkness at a nightclub, so I don't bother the patrons. Overall I give it an 9/10.
THANK YOU for such a good real world review of this. I've been wrestling with whether or not I want a 70D or a 6D as my first DSLR camera and this was a big help.
I'm only halfway through the video so I don't know if he mentions it, but this is a Trenton Titans game, They are the ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers. I'm a season ticket holder and they are a GREAT TIME! I also shoot there for fun, the staff is very cool and normally doesn't mind where I stand during warm ups. So if you're in the area please check it out!
Great review! I honestly think this will be what pushes me up from my 50d to go full frame. I can't help but to think that some of your focusing issues could have been caused by shooting behind the glass wall though. Those things can be tore up in places. The one cross type is a bummer, but I normally focus my shots at the center spot and then recompose before taking the shot. Again.... great review!
I personally ONLY use the center focusing point on any of my cameras. I'll point at what I want focused, hold the shutter button half way down to get the focus, then frame my shot. This works for me on everything but the fastest moving subjects. Even if I use a tripod I'll use this method except move the AF switch to M after I obtain focus so the focus doesn't change and I can take multiple shots.
+Fai27 I remember doing that on my 70D and stopped using it. If I remember correctly it was because it made my thumb uncomfortable if I used it very long. I might give it another shot with the 6D though, thanks for the idea!
+Kory Easterday you don't have to keep Holding the back button to keep focus like the shutter button. Just Focus and let go, it will stay at that focus until you refocus or move the camera/subject
Same here, also shoot sports with my 1D like this, I aim for focus and recomposite directly. Never failed on me for sports, weddings etc. Do not get the fuss about the 3 million focus points, for me it works like shit. Tech heads worry about the focus points in CT, photographers care about their images.
For anyone reading this 8 years later, good luck and riddance using focus and recompose at f/1.2 or even f/1.8. Every single one of your shots will be out of focus at these apertures..unless you're incredibly amazing at this technique.
I was surprised at the start when I saw you were shooting sport to review this one. This review is very fair to the 6D, and I think that while the auto focus is primitive on this model, the low light capabilities make up for it.
That would have been a better test for how you would use a camera. Look at the portrait of the goalie on the bench, thats spot on and amazing. If a camera can handle ice hockey it can handle anything.
I bought this camera about a month ago. I shoot just about everything other than action. It may still be Canon's best body for everything other than action. There is a reason most astrophotography on Canon bodies come from a 6D. Real Estate photography...wifi shutter control to smartphone, yup. Portraits, may still be best Canon portrait body for low light.
I'm already getting a 5D mark III, but I think if I were to upgrade my second body (60D) I'd go with a 6D. I think it's really underrated and people are giving a bad wrap with just seeing the specs. Thank you for the wonderful unbiased review! I've used it at my work and it's actually quite the talented camera. My friend even kept the raw file of an image and he said that it was absolutely amazing. And he's a biased Nikon user. I was surprised to hear him praising a Canon camera.
I have to add to this that when it comes to moire, alot of people are unaware of the mosaic engineering anti aliasing filter that essentially eliminates moire completely. It's a post rear element filter. Worth the dollar for alot of people, especially considering the only major down side for the 6d is the moire in video.
Can't wait for spring, funds will be available...my L glass is hungry for FF digital, they work great for film on my EOS-3's. Thanks Jared, great review...I'm a center point recompose shooter and won't find the AF too much an issue, but as you stated, a few more cross types would have been better.
If you plan on using Magic Lantern (which you should), the 7d is already supported, but low light performance is incredible on the 6d, so it's probably something you'll have to weigh for yourself. Also, keep in mind we're likely to see a 7d Mark ii by the end of 2013.
Good review, but using the tamron AND shooting through the plastic window might have affected AF performance? Do the same with a 5D3 please to compare or maybe just start over and use an EF 70-200mm and don't shoot through a sheet of plastic!
I dont own any of it and did not have any at my disposal. With that said there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Sigm 70-200 2.8 OS. Canon knows there is an issue with the auto focus.
You could have shot the low light photos at much slower shutter speed (I see 1/400sec), thus lower the ISO and get less noise - unless the guy wasn't moving too much. But I understand you wanted to test the low light capabilities of the 6D. I currently have 7D and I'm looking for second body and deciding between 5DMK2 or 6D and so far 6D seems to be finer camera as far as image quality and low light performance. Thanks for the video.
At around the 12:02 point you indicate the 6D has a "joystick" for controlling up/down/left/right. Not to pick nits, but the 6D does not have a joystick (at least mine doesn't). My 7D Mark II does have a joystick. The 6D uses the spinning multi-controller for the up/down/left/right stuff.
My K-5 (as well as my K10D and K-x had as well) has 9 cross types focus points (and two none-cross type at the outer edges). It's nice to have all the 9 points, but you can get by with only a center one.
I think ill be alright with the 6D, i currently shoot with a t4i and i find that 90% of the time i only use the center point. im doing the jump to FF and this camera has a lot of the features i want, if i had the money of course i would skip to the 5d3.
thanks for the review man, i'm still here deciding... i'm about to jump from an super zoom point and shoot camera, (canon SX30is) to my first dSLR, and i'm thinking about this camera. i think this would be more than just perfect.
Great review. I have the same issues with the 9 point AF on my T2i and I was disappointed when Canon announced almost the same AF on the 6D. Not that I'm in the market to buy it or anything. I'm just going to save up for better glass for my T2i for now.
Excellent review, you did say and show what the camera can do. and coming from Nikon shooter. is great to see people that are impartial like you are on this review. great review
I'd have preferred a portrait session or landscape shoot for a better test of the camera as this is more its intended purpose. Jared is pushing the envelope somewhat here with the hockey although the concert shoot is a better test. I am considering this camera and one BIG feature for me is the built in wifi as I want to shoot tethered in studio or at social events where I want to shoot to a computer and then print out for customers immediately. This feature was never mentioned in the review.
Since I do not intend to use my 6D for sports and fast moving motion (the fastest motion I will be focusing on is a concert, which my nikon can do anyway) I think the servo relying on the single cross type will be fine. This review is awesome!
To add to this review. The Canon 6D includes a WI-FI data transmitter (a great feature for studio photography). This is not a useless option that replaces the on-camera flash.
Thats my experience with Sigma glass too... optically great, but there are some focussing issues sometimes. Would have loved to hear that in the video.
Sure but I did not have that ability. Also not everyone who buys a 6D will be spending 2,400 on the L lens. I know how important it is but most wont spend that. The sigma was very good, the results are very good.
Fantastic review Jared! I disagree with a few points though. I hate the wheel at the back; I much prefer the joystick. Also not having dual card slots and a dedicated WB is huge. For me not having a pop up flash is no big deal; I would never use one. The Wifi on this camera is amazing! I love being able to tether to my iPad/iPhone. The AF system is awesome in lowlight when just using the centre point & recomposing. And surprisingly it is noticeably cleaner than the D600 or even the 5Dmk3.
the new Sigma 35mm f1.4 just won a gold award from D preview, and DXO mark says it's the sharpest lens they ever tested on a Canon Camera, and has better optics and is sharper wide open than the 35 Canon L , Nikon or Sony 35, and even out performs the Carl Zeiss Distagon T, and I just bought it myself, but I also own the Sigma 85 f1.4 and it's also a sweet lens, but I do own the new Canon 70/200 f2.8 L IS ll ,,,,,,, but ( I am curious what your favorite lenses are ? ) Mr. L glass only
Jared, you were saying you found it personally hard to focus in low light . the cross type is - 3EV so i am assuming that did nothing to improve the focus in low light situations ?
wow Jared. I wishI found your reviews sooner. This review is incredible. Thank you! I want this camera but.....that crosstype focus sounds like a bummer. I would love to see how this ocmpare to the 5diii
I don't know what you're editing on, love the concept with the I assume go pro on top of the camera while taking stills. If you cut and delete your video stream under the still photos in your timeline you won't have those edges of video underneath the the stills. Though I know you hate cropping photos as do I so maybe its intentional. Liked the idea of the video for sure. Well done.
I love canon, I'm a Nikon shooter and use a 5D MkII when I tag along with my photographer. I've always hated the focusing on the Canon compared to my D7000. I love the Canon cameras, the glass, but the focus issue is the only thing holding me back from jumping ship.
Good stuff man, the holiday deals were great for the D600, came with $600 glass. But also, the D600 is $100 cheaper. I would be perfectly happy with either so long as they perform well and since they are both full frame, I'm not too worried about it. Tomorrow is when I get the new Nikon, can't wait to use it. Also even though I do like Nikon over Canon, I will say that Canon seems to be more user friendly. I need to start doing night time b/w for bands, yours look great.
6D blows D600 away in low light. that single cross-type sensor will still find focus when light so low that D600 cant find focus. it even beats 5D3. also "back in the day" sports photogs were doing more with less, i think they just getting spoiled with the highend, can match with low-end just have to work a lil harder ;p Jared got some good shots of the hockey game, think he would see more and better shots with use, you learn what works and what doesnt, go with the cameras strengths and try to stay away from its weaknesses ;)
Thanks for covering Canon, Jared. I shoot a 5D3, and am fairly appalled by the 6D's 11 Focus Points.. not sure what Canon was thinking here, and 1 cross-type is just ridiculous. That being said, I agree with other users: "glass glass glass" should've equalled Canon 70-200 L II. Also pro-sports shooters tend to shoot wide-open and -at least- 1/1000th to 1/1250th. Your 1/800th shots, thru Sigma, and thru an inch of scratched plexi could easily account for lost/soft focus. Thx again! Love your work
But by that reasoning you would test a Hasselblad by shooting sports. I think that would not be a fair test and neither is it of the 6D in my opinion. The 6D is just not equipped to shoot high speed action but it is very well suited to shoot landscape or portraits and should also be good for lowlight events. I was surprised how well it did shooting hockey but you did not mention what the keeper rate was (or I missed that).
2) Highly visible noise when you shoot at ISO 6D for example 4-5000 in the gym or in other places where there is little light, and what it is the business value in 6D ISO?
Excellent review! I have a couple of questions: 1) Does the Canon 6D problem of what "band" matrix when shooting at ISO 400 and the shutter speed to 1/60? On my 5D Mark 2 is the problem that is very annoying me, I would like to know about the Canon 6D, he has this problem?
This is the only video where I've heard someone down rate the 6D as a not so hot camera for low light situations. Every other video or info I've come across raves about the 6D being superior to the 5D3 in low light. In addition, the camera has multi-focusing points. Why is this review different?
the 6d is a super low light performer For anyone looking for real customer reviews go to dslrcam.net/shop/canoneos6d they have the cam for sale there but go to the actual customer verified reviews.
I have 6D and I am more than happy with it. I was thinking about 5D III but I went for this option and saved money for a new lens. Only one BIG thing which made me want 5D III was autofocus system, but now as I have 6D I am happy for my choice. Literaly, you can FOCUS IN DARKNESS with that center x type point! That is all I needed as I offten work in low light. I never used auto selection as I am not taking sports and I know what I want in focus :) That is why I dont get why Jared on his review was unhappy about it. It is not sporty AF as 5D III or 7D
Well for starters, the 6D is obviously a portrait camera. I rarely shoot action, but I've tried it and it's pretty hard to do. I agree with him that the AF is pretty mediocre. In low light, the 6D is a 1 point AF camera (the outer points are useless), but that one point will focus in near complete darkness. Then he puts a third party lens on it and goes to a hockey game? I enjoyed his 1DX test at the skate park. That was an appropriate test for an action camera. The 6D is a lower cost full frame portrait camera that has exceptional image quality in low light. AI servo is horrible is just about any light. Use the right tool for the job you need to do.
Thank you this was really helpful! I'm thinking of buying my first full frame camera but i'm not a professional so i don't think cameras like 5D mark 2 or 3 would be necessary for my needs. This could be the camera what i'm looking for! Great job :)
I bought 6D yesterday and I'm pretty satisfied, I was on 40D. FF is outstanding and I love it! 17mm finally means 17mm :))) Of course, I'll keep 40D for backup camera :)
hey, thank you very much for this nice and complete review. I sold 1 year ago all my DSLR equipment and bought a NEX7 equipment, now i´m needing again all the capabilities of a DSLR. I will buy one of those cameras, D600 or 6D, not doing sports or action pictures. What do you recommend to me mainly for studio, portraits and social works? I have to say that i like more the body layout of the canon and im scare about the dust and oil issues of the Nikon. But ive come concerns about the AF of the6
Nice video coming from a person using Nikon systems. But you mentioned it is not a camera for stills? Hmmm, I really don't think so. The images, considering it only has one cross-type AF point, are yummy. High ISO performance reputation, and I heard it focuses fast in the dark. -3EV, I think...
I just noticed Jarod Motor Driving. I have watched MANY of your videos to know you hate Motor Driving. Now I don't feel bad when I do it. :) Very good video.
I am ready to go full frame from D7000, so D600 looks familiar to me but I also see great things on Canon 6D. I sold all my dx lenses to start a new lineup. Which one would you recommend. I take photos as a hobby, from landscape to portraits and weddings.
Hi Jared, great unbiased review. I use a canon 1d mk4 and a 5d mk 2 with L glass as a pro. I was thinking of getting the6d as a light weight option for quick press shoots where people are posed. The ability to send images to my phone and email to clients and news desks quickly may also be useful on occasion. Would love to know if you think the 6d is decent for this kind of work. Many thanks

I think the focus problems happened because he used the Sigma lens, if he had used the Canon 70-200 f /2.8 is 2 the focus would be perfect
Wait what?
I agree, Sigma has had focus issues with Canon cameras because they’re essentially reversed engineered and that’s never perfect.
It wasnt an error, when I made the video the prices were the same.
yup, or something like a 39 point 20 cross type or something. Not the best of the best but something good still.
I use the tripod adapter for gopro than a cold show thing to go into my camera. Il take a picture sometime.
being that I was shooting RAW plus jpeg fine that slowed it down.
Thank you, i take pride in it.
That is interesting about sending photos right to the desk by clicking and sending, that is cool. If you can live with the autofocus than sure. I liked this camera.

correct.
The gopro was used for the first person perspective.

I think for sports it did fantastic considering this is not a sports suited camera.
I think i will always prefer having the bigger heavier pro body over a camera like this.
With this bicep back than ;)

The 5D MKIII is outdated? You sure about that?
thank you.
All i can tell you is I used the camera in low light and had issues. Thats really how I base my reviews.
not really no.
I was surprised at the start when I saw you were shooting sport to review this one. This review is very fair to the 6D, and I think that while the auto focus is primitive on this model, the low light capabilities make up for it.

Awesome review! I ordered mine last night. I have a 550D right now but can't wait to get this!
Can't wait for spring, funds will be available...my L glass is hungry for FF digital, they work great for film on my EOS-3's. Thanks Jared, great review...I'm a center point recompose shooter and won't find the AF too much an issue, but as you stated, a few more cross types would have been better.
I love your reviews man! theyre very informative and useful. im going back and forth between the 6d and the d600 right now and these help a lot.
Very professional review Jared, well done reviewing this Canon product being that you are a Nikon shooter.
That second close up of the Goalie was bananas! :D
Great review! I won't be getting one but this and the D600 occupy a very interesting spot in the market right now.
Hey Fro! Do you think 6D is still good full frame DSLR in 2020 as a entry cam? 🤪
Easily the best review for Someone interested in the Canon 6d
Hey Jared I just bought your beginners guide and it helped me out tremendously. Thank you fro!!!!
Canon 6D for 2020?
Thank you so much, Jared. Been waiting for this. Your reviews are truly the best.
thanks for the review man, i'm still here deciding... i'm about to jump from an super zoom point and shoot camera, (canon SX30is) to my first dSLR, and i'm thinking about this camera. i think this would be more than just perfect.
I posted the images for you to decide for yourself.
Sure but I did not have that ability. Also not everyone who buys a 6D will be spending 2,400 on the L lens. I know how important it is but most wont spend that. The sigma was very good, the results are very good.
I would love to see a comparison between the 6D and 7D
Now THIS is a review! Well done Fro!
Awesome review Jared!
Waiting to see the comparison with the D600.
And surprisingly it is noticeably cleaner than the D600 or even the 5Dmk3.
getting this tomorrow. upgrading from my 5d mark II. thanks for the video man
the new Sigma 35mm f1.4 just won a gold award from D preview, and DXO mark says it's the sharpest lens they ever tested on a Canon Camera, and has better optics and is sharper wide open than the 35 Canon L , Nikon or Sony 35, and even out performs the Carl Zeiss Distagon T, and I just bought it myself, but I also own the Sigma 85 f1.4 and it's also a sweet lens, but I do own the new Canon 70/200 f2.8 L IS ll ,,,,,,, but ( I am curious what your favorite lenses are ?
Would like to see a comparison with the Canon EOS 7D, but on the lower ISO ofcourse
Loving the top gear theme in the beginning!
6D blows D600 away in low light. that single cross-type sensor will still find focus when light so low that D600 cant find focus. it even beats 5D3.
also "back in the day" sports photogs were doing more with less, i think they just getting spoiled with the highend, can match with low-end just have to work a lil harder ;p
Jared got some good shots of the hockey game, think he would see more and better shots with use, you learn what works and what doesnt, go with the cameras strengths and try to stay away from its weaknesses ;)
i was blown away what it could do in low light. my kitchen has horrible light, and even at a reasonable ISO it looked fully lit.
I have a couple of questions:
1) Does the Canon 6D problem of what "band" matrix when shooting at ISO 400 and the shutter speed to 1/60? On my 5D Mark 2 is the problem that is very annoying me, I would like to know about the Canon 6D, he has this problem?
Great review ! Do you think a 6D is a 5DIII 'light' ? Is spending 1000 euro's more and buying a 5DIII a good idea ?
I'd love to see some sports shot with D7000 the way you did it in this video.
This is the only video where I've heard someone down rate the 6D as a not so hot camera for low light situations. Every other video or info I've come across raves about the 6D being superior to the 5D3 in low light. In addition, the camera has multi-focusing points. Why is this review different?
the 6d is a super low light performer
For anyone looking for real customer reviews go to dslrcam.net/shop/canoneos6d they have the cam for sale there but go to the actual customer verified reviews.
I never used auto selection as I am not taking sports and I know what I want in focus :)
That is why I dont get why Jared on his review was unhappy about it.
Great review, thanks. Much more informative than most review i've seen out there. keep it up.
I've actually heard that the 5d Mark III is even worse in low light with auto focusing even with the 60 something focus points..
hey, thank you very much for this nice and complete review.
But ive come concerns about the AF of the6
thanks for the long and unbiased review jared, I liked it very much...
don't u think that the out of focus issue is contributed by the Sigma glass u put on it rather the camera itself?
Nice video coming from a person using Nikon systems. But you mentioned it is not a camera for stills? Hmmm, I really don't think so. The images, considering it only has one cross-type AF point, are yummy. High ISO performance reputation, and I heard it focuses fast in the dark. -3EV, I think...
Wish I saw this before I got my 6d a little over a year ago. I have had nothing but hit or miss focus with it, and ready to move on.
Many thanks
