it blows me away every time I see this jet just getting off the ground,, Thank you Wright Brothers!!.. 200 tons of Metal with 4 jet engines rated at 50,000lbs of Thrust each.. Amazing
I miss G-VAST ‘Ladybird’ very much already, you don’t often see footage of her in the old ‘Silver Dream Machine’ livery. She was scrapped at St Athan in November unfortunately, joining G-VBIG ‘Tinker Belle’. Two of the best registrations in history.
Me and my Autistic 18 year old son love this video. We will be flying to Florida with Virgin in Feb with my brother and his family, it is their first time and after seeing this video they are so excited!! Well done and thanks for sharing x
I'm into planespotting after having a 747-400 gaining altitude over me just after taking off, with the engines roaring at full power and causing the walkway where I was to vibrate. No video can capture the feeling of awesomeness and majesty of that magnificent plane leaving the ground. Great video, by the way.
The sound of the engines screaming as they throttle up for take off gives me shivers every time I hear it. This is the most beautiful aircraft in the world. I cannot wait to fly on one again - it's been so long!
Very beautiful video. I remember taking off in one of these things is unlike taking off in any other plane. So graceful! Thanks for the upload. had to watch it twice!
747 is legend and barely grows old! I love both A380 and 747 but the A380 is the new state of the art super jumbo. I saw it taking off and lmanding many times, it is an awesome aircraft!!
I can watch this video over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over without getting bored. I love the 747. It's the best plane out there! Especially in the Virgin Atlantic livery!
I've seen many videos of planes that were shot from this airport. It must be the greatest place in the world for filming, and it still surprises me how close one seems to be able to get to the planes.
I am remembering my mother these days. One fond memory is when she had to fly to Asia because of my ailing grandmother. I remember that day because I missed her just as I miss her now. She passed away. She flew to Japan on NorthWest Orient and then on to South Korea. I thought I would lose my mother by plane crash.
Of the 1.2 million views, I think most are me. The sound, the size, the lift off, all are beautiful. Lufthansa is still using these 747, they charge a premium when you book to fly in it, I think passengers of Virgin would pay the premium too. Bring back the Queen's!!
there are many smart people in the world after all, i guess im not, but its amazing that there is people out there who make these amazing things, wow, incredible.
Depending on weight, wind, air temperature, etc a 747 reaches about 150 to 175 knots before rotating. As it's rotating to take off its still accelerating. Below 10000 ft planes stay below 250 knots, then accelerate to whatever speed ATC tells them to fly at. In Flight Simulator I usually set my auto pilot to 300-320 knots. As I climb the air becomes thinner and the plane continues to accelerate to maintain 300 knots when the ground speed is actually higher... ~400 to 525 knots.
the 747 has quite a smooth climb, it is a lot heavier than most aircraft but at the same time more powerful, the 747-400 has tremendous force, you'll find the initial rotate it feels the strain s bit then powers into the sky, a beautiful aircraft, the best to fly on
Never ceases to amaze me how something THAT big actually flies... Frank Whittle had to have been the ultimate genius, scrawling the first theoretical jet engine on a scrap of paper - all those decades ago, and within 20 years of the first flight...
finally i found someone who agrees... take off is my favourite part because of the engine noise. Unfortunately the A380 is all quiet and modern... bring back back tingles!
There would be other considerations involved. You have to consider Head Winds and also if the plane has STOL (short take off and landing) capability like the installment of extra extending flaps. I think thats standard on all ER models. So, depending what conditions we're talking about; about 125-132 KTS could very well be Plausible even for that size plane.
This is the same aircraft that made the first Virgin Atlantic scheduled flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico!, VS flight 81 London Gatwick to San Juan, Puerto Rico via Antigua on November 7, 2009. It makes seasonal Saturday flights though, services ended in May, will restart in November 2010! :)
such amazing clip Went to orlando last year with British Airways and am interested in trying Virgin but its pricey. We travelled nicely in TravellersPlus out but economy coming back which was uncomfortable Any suggestions in price for July 2014???
they stand the throttles up then check all engines rotating at roughly the same speed then apply full power. auto throttle sets actual power for the take off i think.
Nice video! Bit long time to wait for takeoff You said the video taken in widesecreen, but it looks like a phone cam capture! Even it made the B747 look v narrow vertically!
I remember once when I flew on a 747 to Orlando, due to the amount of time we spent taxing to the runway, a child in the row behind me cried out " Mummy I thought we were flying to America, not driving" Had most of the cabin in stiches.
I love these planes. When someone I loved died when I was a child- I remember seeing one of these planes in the sky like a shooting star, it was so beautiful. I always thought the virgin planes had a certain magic since then. I am also scared of flying - what scares me is the noise as I am very sensitive to sound - does anyone have any tips for over coming this fear? I can manage to fly but only with valium and hypnotherpy and classical music lol. I still love it I just wish there was no fear
it blows me away every time I see this jet just getting off the ground,, Thank you Wright Brothers!!.. 200 tons of Metal with 4 jet engines rated at 50,000lbs of Thrust each.. Amazing
Incredible video Bradley!
Bradley Penny Aviation Thanks Bradley, this ones a golden oldie! Ladybird in the famous purple boarder colours 😍
It certainly is a shame to see them go after all these years
Me and my Autistic 18 year old son love this video. We will be flying to Florida with Virgin in Feb with my brother and his family, it is their first time and after seeing this video they are so excited!! Well done and thanks for sharing x
you will love florida, loads of stuff to do, look out for Parkers diner, they do a loveley breakfast, if i rememeber right its near the Florida Mall.
no matter how many times i watch an airplane takeoff,it never cease to amaze me!!SMFH!!!
I'm into planespotting after having a 747-400 gaining altitude over me just after taking off, with the engines roaring at full power and causing the walkway where I was to vibrate. No video can capture the feeling of awesomeness and majesty of that magnificent plane leaving the ground.
Great video, by the way.
Amazing that this plane can trace it's beginnings back to the B-17.
I would never get tired of this video, love it
Thank you! :) I'm pleased you enjoy watching my video.
Fantastic, the best ever sound of any plane taking off. The jumbo is truely magnificent.
Beautiful aircraft. I really miss when Virgins fleet was just this and the A340’s!
Simpler times
747 is legend and barely grows old! I love both A380 and 747 but the A380 is the new state of the art super jumbo. I saw it taking off and lmanding many times, it is an awesome aircraft!!
Ohhh man.. That sound runs chills down my spine!! Awsome video!
I went on this aircraft in 2008 from Gatwick to Las Vegas. It was my first time on it and first time on a boeing 747 jumbo jet. It was fantastic.
I can watch this video over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over without getting bored. I love the 747. It's the best plane out there! Especially in the Virgin Atlantic livery!
Done the 747 51 times but it is always immortal. Thank you.
dear god have mercy listen to those engines sing oh wonderful plane how i wish i can hug u...
General electric engines by Americans. that's a perfect innovation... engine stabilization and then take off thrust
dingleberry
That is impressive. How on earth does a beauty so big soar into the sky?
And the noise as it is taking off - wow!
Cracking camera work. The sound is deafening, but my God, it really is a leader of the skies. Top stuff.
I went on this aircraft from gatwick to las vegas in 2008. My first time with virgin and first time on a boeing 747 jumbo jet. It was fantastic.
I've seen many videos of planes that were shot from this airport. It must be the greatest place in the world for filming, and it still surprises me how close one seems to be able to get to the planes.
This exact plane was used in the Top Gear Car VS Boeing 747 test

She passed away. She flew to Japan on NorthWest Orient and then on to South Korea. I thought I would lose my mother by plane crash.
I wonder how is it possible that the first 747 was delivered more than 40 years ago and it is still a great, beautiful, powerful plane..
Is anybody else just smiling whilst watching this take off into the clouds
Great video! waiting for it to go was worth the wait to hear those turbofans throttle up. Love that sound! Beautiful rotation and climbout...
Of the 1.2 million views, I think most are me. The sound, the size, the lift off, all are beautiful. Lufthansa is still using these 747, they charge a premium when you book to fly in it, I think passengers of Virgin would pay the premium too. Bring back the Queen's!!
thanks for making and sharing this, I am a proud plane spotter and I could do it all do long,
Beauty footage. I had flew on 'jersey girl' to Las Vegas from Manchester. Best flight ever:)
just amazing how that huge thing gets in the air
IKR. I'm always thinking..."How does something THAT heavy get into they air." But then again, there's logical physics behind it. 😁
Howard Hughes was onto something when he envisioned large aircraft flying.
Such a beautiful aircraft.
Looked great when the sun came out, beautiful plane! Great video.
I've been on a Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 :) from Gatwick to Florida. Proper good video :)
must say.. amazing camera zoom.. just mind blowing... both aircraft & camera...
This Video it just WOOOW !!!!
Beautiful , specially the noise around 5.00.
flew on a virgin 747 yesterday from orlando, FL to London gatwick. best flight ever.
Never ceases to amaze me. Awesome vid.
went on Ruby Tuesday December 2014 Florida and our seats were in the bubble truly amazing
Couldn't agree more - 747 still the best aiplane on the market.
there are many smart people in the world after all, i guess im not, but its amazing that there is people out there who make these amazing things, wow, incredible.
Those 747's are big ass airplanes. When I looked at one before boarding, I felt like an ant gazing upon this monster aircraft!

The Virgin atlantic 747 is the best looking 747 in my opinion!
Thank you for that. Such a great film.
Yes, I agree. The best, and the best looking aircraft ever built.
Never ceases to amaze me how something THAT big actually flies... Frank Whittle had to have been the ultimate genius, scrawling the first theoretical jet engine on a scrap of paper - all those decades ago, and within 20 years of the first flight...
its amazing how an aircraft that huge can takeoff like a champ. Simply amazing! Now i cant wait for the Boeing BWB cargo jets!
Virgin Atlantic airline are the best I can't wait to be going back on one again soon when I head of to Florida
I used to visit Manchester airport regularly and still go occasionally. I wonder if this was one of the days I was there.
finally i found someone who agrees... take off is my favourite part because of the engine noise. Unfortunately the A380 is all quiet and modern... bring back back tingles!
I flew back to the UK on this aircraft from the U.S last Sunday, flown on her a few times, old but good.
Fantastic footage! Thanks for sharing.
I love this video. The sound of the B747 is just amazing. :)
Really fantastic video ..thanks for posting.. loved it
Why are people saying its the most beautiful plane ever built? CONCORDE was and still is the most beautiful plane ever built!!!
I've been on that exact b747-400 "ladybird" 5 years ago from Manchester to Orlando, Florida
Didn't seem like it had run along the runway long enough to take off. Bloody great isn't it.
I know this ain't much to do with this, but i'm 17 and i just can't wait to be an air hostess working for virgin!
It's my life's long dream!

Oh man.. i always get shivers when i hear 747 taking off
great vid , seen a few shot from this location , whereabouts are you standing to get such a cool shot ? is it the viewing park ?
ah yes, the first video i ever watched on the platform in 2011.
Wooooww I'm 21 but the close up of the plane makes me feel 8 lol. Hard to believe the Airbus A380 makes this super cool plane look small...
It went slow as shit going down the run way
Crazy how that Bird gets off the ground.
Fascinating
Great video of takeoff! Beautiful VA B747-400!
might be going to Florida on one of these in December. its a beast!
Flew on this in July 2017. Best flight ever.
What a wonderful plane and u must love the sound of those engines
flew from the same airport to the same place with the same company last month only we flew on the jet named "hot lips" awesome plane
I love the feeling when you are on a plane waiting to take off...
Excellent video ... I've flown on Ladybird a few times to Vegas
going on one of these in december to get to Orlando! so excited
such amazing clip
Went to orlando last year with British Airways and am interested in trying Virgin but its pricey.
We travelled nicely in TravellersPlus out but economy coming back which was uncomfortable
Any suggestions in price for July 2014???
cool vid. love the engine throttle-up. how'd you get so close to the runway?
That's cool !
Excellent video - well captured A+++
flying on virgin to florida from gatiwck in 4 weeks.. cant wait love it
Great trip as long as your upfront. LONG flight if you'e down the back.
brother, you video is very good and sound is great, greetings.
I love how they work the throttle in 2 stages like that to relieve stress on the aircraft. I think some pilots do this in 3 stages maybe. :-)
they stand the throttles up then check all engines rotating at roughly the same speed then apply full power. auto throttle sets actual power for the take off i think.
Nice video! Bit long time to wait for takeoff You said the video taken in widesecreen, but it looks like a phone cam capture! Even it made the B747 look v narrow vertically!
@aklosvik Fair question. I've never seen a commercial airliner wait so long for ATC clearance.
please have a proper look at a380..... its simply amazing
I remember once when I flew on a 747 to Orlando, due to the amount of time we spent taxing to the runway, a child in the row behind me cried out " Mummy I thought we were flying to America, not driving" Had most of the cabin in stiches.
Holly!!!
HOw long does it take to get the clear for take off????
Beautiful plane by the way!
amazing.. but im guessing the upstairs seat is first class ?
Nice video mate, will be flying with virgin to orlando for the 6th time in under two weeks cant wait :P
Right now at this moment, this particular flight is en route to Gatwick.
Am I right to say that you have got a tripod now? Great filming Brad!
what a viewing spot!! you have runway access? lucky you.
the a380 maybe a bit bigger but the great 747 will always be my queen!
are they RRs or GE engines ? cant hear that buzzing noise the RRs are know for ? So im thinking GE or PW ??
Went to Orlando on one of these bad boys best flight I've ever had.
amazing, where was this video captured from?
nice vid thanks for upload
I love these planes. When someone I loved died when I was a child- I remember seeing one of these planes in the sky like a shooting star, it was so beautiful.
