As a kid i came across the countryball fandom and i was instantly drawn in, I actually learned a LOT about history and geography thanks to that fandom, i had been there for years and even created my own comics, i didn't know about countryhumans until a few years ago, once i learned about countryhumans i instantly cringed and slowly left the countryball fandom.. The countryball fandom isn't all that bad at all, but the countryhumans are something else
This literally is what happened to me but in reverse. I came across the country humans fandom first and was drawn in by the historical and my lack of knowledge on any of the topics. Afterwards a few years ago I stumbled along hetalia- enough said. And then country/Poland ball which is so much better even though I left the fandom a few months ago I learned so much about history and flags.

I had a similar story, except everything happened a lot faster, and it wasn't that long ago that I became uninterested. I just found some funny TH-cam animations with them... and eventually saw that people were making weird and cringe stuff with it and getting way too interested in it.

Same here with you, but reversed. I came into the Countryhumans fandom because i like history and tried to get my self into art once more after i stopped, and so i came in, dive, got pulled to the bad stuff (i was a kid, didn’t know any better), regret, stay on the good side and honestly still in the fandom after like 3 yrs since i found it. Probably because of my love for history and imagination.
I stumbled upon Countryballs/Polandballs from some cool history animations but was never really interested in the style of art, and then stumbled upon Hetalia and watched the anime (Hetalia World Stars), and i think it’s interesting but until now i haven’t actually drawn anything seriously besides Countryhumans :/
At least Hetalia had countries with their own personalities, personal relationships, their own unique looks that changed and their own comedic style. It was not only easy to ship countries because of history, but also based on personality like most fandoms. America was a fun, energetic, patriotic and slightly greedy 19 year old, and Japan was a quiet, understanding, mature 20 year old. Each of them had their own characteristics that made them likeable and fun to watch.

This. The reason I was in the fandom was I wanted to learn about geography, but as soon as I learned about their 'personalities' and characteristic, I started shipping. I thought that the personalities matched and I js thought it was really cute.
And nothing interferes with actual happenings and past between countries. Its just all fun.
Plus the whole thing with them being separate from the political side, they are not their governments

Like, Hetalia's fandom may have been cringe, but the show itself was super fun and innovative. The countries are basically immortal representations of their country and its people, separate from the government. That's also why Germany works as a character in Hetalia, and not Countryhumans.

I tried so hard to pry myself out of this dumpster fire only to come back to try to laugh at myself as I fall into the same pit again. I tried looking at horrendous shit until I had enough and left the fandom, instead I started enjoying the art styles of certain artists and their takes on history.
I tried to laugh at the stupid fucking fan fictions only to find genuinely good fics that don't focus on history. Keep in mind, I was looking on Wattpad. Then I found a writer in the fandom who made a historical comedy based book about making fun of history _and_ the fandom that portrays it!
I tried to destory my sanity by looking into ship art between nations that absolutely fucking _despise_ each other, only to start building up a tolerance for things like this.
Hell, I even dragged some of my friends into the fandom, to laugh at _them!_ Even that failed! I only managed to get a shit ton of blackmail fuel and a huge cringefest.
This fandom, this community-everything about it is fucking unbearable. Please help. I don't want to re-enter this place..

Honestly it isn't that big of a deal, I was just exaggerating for 'comedic affect'. The fandom is weird, but it entertained -and destroyed my sanity- me for a year straight. It also made me alot more intrested in history and such.

I’m now in the Hetalia fandom.
Though confusing, I think I’ve pinned down the question of “Why countries?” My theory is that the countries don’t matter. The only reason they are countries is to give a body to the personified stereotypes. If you have all of the personalities for a story, but you lack a body for the characters what do you do? If it’s just some random human, who will care about it? People want something to relate to, something that they understand. You see the American flag, you think “Oh, this character is probably rude and upfront.” You see the Union Jack, you think “Oh, this character is probably stuck up and posh.” You see some random human character, how are you going to know what to expect? IDK, that’s just my guess. Maybe people just find big landmasses hot.

speaking as someone who used to be a fairly popular artist in this fandom (I no longer draw CH), they're mainly fun to draw because the absurdity is so fucking funny. plus there's way less pressure to draw amazingly and the fandom is a lot more fun and accepting than other fandoms
