      @@joshuayeager3686 Yes, you are correct. When you realise he was so poor, hungry at times, playing any instrument he could find and rose to the heights he did, alone it staggers the mind. He eventually was very wealthy but didn’t really waste his money as you might think a person would. He helped friends and family financially. He gave to many charities even from his first cheque when he helped a black school buy instruments. He believed God gave him his talent to help others less fortunate. He also put his Purple Rain money into PP so he didn’t have to go anywhere to record but stay at home. Also a business to have artists use and pay for. That put Minneapolis on the map as we say. He was the largest Urban owner of land and had $1,000,000 worth of gold bars stored away. Best known investment is bricks and mortar ( land) and next is gold bullion. You know I could ramble on about the genius of this man for a long time. Sorely missed.

      Hello.,
      First I would like to say thank you for all the children you helped. I was a Luka as my older brother (2 years older than me) and my mum. We were beaten by the man I don't want to call father anymore. He didn't need any reasson to beat us or to torture our mind by saying : I'll kill you etc... when I was 8 he emptied a jerrican of gasoil on my mother and then shilling he took à box of matches. I ran in the arms of my mother because I prefered to die livre with this monster. My older brother called à neighboor who arrived just on time. The day after this event my "father" acted like nothing happened and waited for his breakfast. And believe me that mwasn't the worst he was capable of. He had no remorse.
      He tried to push me by the Windows of my room on the third floor, he shavrd my hair to humiliated me, he push me down the stars to the bassement and made me sleep in a wardrobe etc...
      My mother is dead since 2012. She was so stressed that she always had ulcères in the stomac it end up becoming à cancer.
      I am 47 and I still cry and have nightmares. My husband helped me a lot. I am going to stop here because I don't want to bother you with the story of my life but once again for the children you helped.

      I have a child who is suffering from trauma and I don't know how to help her through it. Thank you for your honesty because it's beyond cruel people harming children in anyway. I did everything to protect my child, but her father didn't so she was exposed to dreadful situations when he was supposed to be caring for her and I can not change what happened to my Baby Girl. Years of counselling hasn't worked but I keep trying and letting her know that I love and adore her unconditionally. She is learning that she was too young to prevent the abuse, but her suffering is becoming life threatening and I cry all the time when she can't see me. Wonderful supportive response. Many of my friends still have major anger problems, I was very fortunate and able to work out blame issues. But it still hurts to know that there are people suffering out there through no fault of their own, because of their abuse. The universe is worse off because of this unaccepted violation of children and adults. We don't know what we could have contributed during the times that we had to suffer our abuse. We can only do what we can to help ourselves and others around us who might have been touched in one way or another by abuse. Good luck to you too. I am certain that all of the positive things you are doing will make a difference in your lives. Thank you so much Carolyn. I appreciate your kind words and sharing your story with me. Abuse is wholly unacceptable and has more to do with the abuser than those abused. I have promised my Doctor friends and family that I will never ever again be a victim of any kind. But I still have my moments especially hearing this song out of the blue that used to really affect me, and make me consider the pain that others are going through as well. I find that thinking about the bewildering reasons people, children and adults suffer at the hands of their abusers and it takes me just a little while to come to terms with my determination never to be abused again. I find I don't suffer fools willingly, and that has afforded me a better choice of friends. Sending hugs and healing back to you. ✨🙋

I always remembered his name, and I always remembered his face, and I didn't know much about him, but he just seemed set apart from these other children that I would see playing. As others have mentioned, you should check out her songs “Tom’s Diner” and “Left of Center.” My very favorite Suzanne Vega performance, however, is her duet with Pat DiNizio called “In a Lonely Place” by The Smithereens. The Smithereens were known for their hard-driving alt-rock, but “In a Lonely Place” has this mesmerizing bossa nova vibe. The Smithereens have a killer catalog of very catchy music. There really is no need to put one kind of abuse against the other and rank them - and I'm pretty sure any child that's abused does not care one iota whether it was a "more unlikely" kind of violence. If a kid grows up in a household where they don't have to be afraid of the people living with them, it's perfectly okay to still warn them about "stranger danger", since for them, that's where danger might come from.

    • @karikells
      @karikells 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fryke i think that's exactly what @sukie584 was saying in this comment. i read the comment as saying "the sad thing is" that US society as a whole ranks one kind of abuse (stranger danger) as "more important" to teach about. stranger danger is one that's "so important" kids are taught in schools about it. yet a more common type of abuse is ignored in those same teachings in the same schools. i thought the original comment was pointing out that the more common type of abuse isn't one that kids are typically taught is not ok & that they should report it. (i don't read anything in that original comment about "one kind of abuse" being "ranked" as more harmful than another... i agree, given the number of hours kids spend in school & the number of minutes spent teaching kids about what kinds of touch (sexual or other types of assault) are not ok - it's a shame that educational systems do *not* spend those minutes talking about the types of abuse that statistically their students are most likely to encounter. yeah, it's good that they teach anything at all about this. but it's sad that the time can't be spent making a difference in *more* students' lives.

I always remembered his name, and I always remembered his face, and I didn't know much about him, but he just seemed set apart from these other children that I would see playing. At the time this haunting track was released (in 1987...), every newspaper and TV station in New York was reporting about a little 6 year old girl, whose name was Lisa Steinberg.
    Lisa was being abused by her father Joel (an attorney...) - and died from her injuries.
    The public outrage was enormous, and the story went international.
    Every time I hear this song, it makes me cry tears of rage and sadness, as I wonder about how many a "Luka" has paid (and will end up paying...) the ultimate price, just like little Lisa.

    Yeah fortunately for Suzanne this song wasn't about abuse to Her, she's telling the story (singing the song) in the 'second person', the perspective of a little boy that supposedly lived in an above apartment from her. I of course didn't know the story of this song myself for the LONGEST time, I really only learned of it in recent years from an interview with Suzanne Vega. And from what I recall, it may be that she got most of the idea for this song, from an encounter she once had. But all in all to bring awareness to abuse of this nature. ✌

    Suzanne Vega proves that being soulful doesn't mean you have to emote or use vocal gymnastics. The beauty of this song is in the contrast between the story and the upbeat music. Suzanne sings as if detached and emotionless like Luka, and the real story is behind a veil. I think the best art gives the observer something to fill in themselves and create an interaction. Because it isn't being spoon-fed to you from the intro the moment when you figure out what's really happening hits you harder.
