This came out in 1987. It was very popular on the radio. Some DJs mentioned the message, but most didn’t. I was 18 years old. Every time I heard this, I wept inside for all the nameless/faceless children in this situation!! Unfortunately, 35+ years later, I still weep!! There could be a “Luca” down the street! One of my teenage daughter’s friends could be a “Luca!” I pray that someday, there will be no more “Luca’s!!!!”

Every day in every way all we can do is try to be a little kinder, and to look out for those ones around us that might need help, and help if we can. 💖 Only love is real. Only love can heal. Thanks for this one!

It's interesting watching people listen and then react to this song for the first time. The tune is so snappy and catchy...fun. The person reacting will usually start with a smile, getting ready to get all into the song...then bam! Like a smack in the face the lyrics are dropped...and so is the smile. You did a fantastic job with this reaction. You were very sensitive and heartfelt...cudos!

Thanks so much for your empathetic reaction! I was in abusive and violent relationships as well - you get stucked within when you grow up feeling worthless, blaming yourself! It’s though to step out of this circle but you can do it!!! We just need empowerment and voices to stand up for us so that we can do it for ourselves! So thanks for your empowerment

My husband and is roommate watched a dude kick his girl down a flight of stairs so they returned him the favor. They went to jail and had to sit there all weekend while she bailed her man out. When they got back to the apartment the couple had moved.
Then about 5 years later he and I were at a friends house and saw a guy across he street beating on his girl so the guys went across the street and detained him till the cops got there. We had to testify in court what we witnessed.
When my husband was 5 his dad beat on them and his mom so this was something he has always been passionate about.

    First time hearing this song.
I'm right with you when you say that you can't just sit and let it keep happening. There were numerous times I called the cops if I knew neighbors were fighting. Last year, I literally saw this young man (25ish) kick his mother down to the ground. I called the cops immediately and they came to talk to her, then they came and told me that she denied it all and said she was just fine. My brother knew them and he let them know "my sister doesn't stand for any of that. She will call the cops every time."
It's because I have been physically abused by relatives and boyfriends. I wish I would have had someone to make those calls for me or to stand up for me.
I once drove 3 hours to check on my best friend. All I had to hear from a mutual friend was that she said, "if anything happens to me, it was him." I had just finished my 10 hour shift at work at like 3am, drove home to pack a bag and then drove 3 hours to her town. On my way, I called the police department and told them I wanted them to do a welfare check on her. They said she was just fine - "they were sleeping." So the next day I texted her that I was in town and I had gotten a hotel room. She invited me over and while I was there they said a cop had stopped by last night. They didn't know who called the PD. I looked her husband right in the eyes and said "It was ME!" And I slapped my chest. I looked at her and I said, "NOTHING is gonna happen to you! Not on my f*ckin watch!" I wanted him to know it was me, that I'm not afraid of him. I'm not afraid to just pop up unexpectedly, to call the cops, to do WHATEVER I CAN for HER, even if I have to fight him myself! And if anything was to happen to me, my brother would be after him. Don't f*ck with my sis! Of course they both denied it all, but months later their daughter (7 years old at the time) told me in private that her dad shoved her mom down and was dragging her by her hair, and she said she was so scared and sad. It had happened a while before she told me, but I told her to call me and let me know if anything ever happens again and she said Ok. Their 2 youngest had phones and only had a select few phone numbers in their phones -- my number was one of them.

"Yes, I think you've seen me before" -- Luka is watching carefully to see what people are feeling - like a dog'es eyes flick back and forth when people are talking, trying to understand what the mood is - the child is operating on full defensive mode all the time

Such a sad song about child abuse from the child's (Luka's) point of view told effectively through song. Through music and lyrics via Suzanne Vega, Luka is trying to rationalize the abuse that has happened to him. This song touched many people when it came out in 1987 because it connected to both victims and non-victims of child abuse. The uptempo music was meant to add contrast with the harsh reality of Luka's painful situation.

Yeah, I feel you. Do you feel a small boned white woman in an abusive relationship? Your IMMMEDIATE thoguht is probably yes! Hey, I'm a white man who was in a long relationship with a black woman, who got a lot of racism from part of her family. So, just think twice, thrice or even four times before you answer. It can be hard to put yourself in someone's situation, and our mixed race daugther so definitely agrees.

Stop abuse, I can trace at least 5 generations of physical abuse in my family. My great grandmother was probably the worst from what other family members have said. My brothers have said we want to stop this cycle, now my youngest brother is expecting another grandchild. I know it’s said too often but if you see it say something. My teachers could have said something because I was always bruised. They could brush that off as a bruise from football, wrestling, or just something I got fighting or just messing around.

I remember my little brother when he was about 3 running around with 2 black eyes and people thought he was being abused. The thing is one of them was really from getting hit with the door knob when I (age 10) flung the door open. The other he got the very next day. My aunt told him to tie his shoe but he was slow about it so she knelt down to do it for him. Ended up blacking his other eye with her knee. We laugh about it now but my mom was pretty freaked out about it at the time.
