    I love the pinker versions of this color, it's the kind of loud and bright that I enjoy :) I think I'll have to keep note to check out the Holbein and Mission Gold versions :O

    Such a helpful series, thank you!
    I started off building my palette with DS, then tried WN after I discovered Handprint.com, but after doing a bit of my own "Colossal Color Showdown", I chose Holbein. The DS is a more "natural" magenta, being slightly duller, but still distinct from Quin Violet. The WN is bright with just a hint of texture. But the Holbein is so pure and bright, I just couldn't resist. I found QoR too difficult to work with, and it seems to lose saturation way too unpredictably. I also found a place in my palette for Quin Lilac, because it's just a stunning magenta.

      I know what you mean about the quin lilac Amy, it's also such a gorgeous color!

    Even after watching this I still love Holbein's the most. It's just so bright. I surprised myself when I picked them over Daniel Smith to put in my main palette.

    The DS Quin Lilac is the PR122, and is much closer to what people expect a Q Magenta to be, if they're looking for a 3 color mixing set that is all DS, but it's not that different from DS Quin Rose.

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, that is a much better primary magenta color. This series is about comparing colors by their names though, which is why this lovely color wasn't included in the episode.

    I've been reading, searching and viewing comparisons all over the internet the last week and I honestly found one of the best PR122 reviews! Only thing I would add is a PR122 from Sennelier. Just to see them side by side! All in all an excellent review that helped me decide which one to buy. Many thanks!

    Da Vinci Quin Fuchsia PR202 is more comparable to the other Magentas, Perm Magenta looks much, much bluer than any of the paints you tested. And Sennelier's Helios Purple PR122 might be closer to the others than the Perm Magenta you were able to test. As usual, names and hues rarely match across brands :)
    As always, so interesting to see the comparisons!

    My favorite is Sennelier's ... which goes by the name of Helios Purple (I think Jackson's sells it as Quin Purple). Have not tried Daniel Smith's Quin Lilac but I also have the QoR which was my introduction to this pigment.

    @anam00090 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Love the comparison, thank you. Wonder how Sennelier does in mixes. I have QOR, as well as White Nights and they are very comparable. White Nights' one is called Quinacridone Rose though, it is PR 122 and behaves very much like QOR's (minus the flow). I have actually found that White Nights' Turquoise is also comparable to Daniel Smith's Phthalo Turquoise (hue-wise. pigments are different). If anyone cares for a cheaper alternative, this may be a good way to test the hue.

    Hi Oto. I have the QOR. I like it very much except it is the only one of their 12 colors I have that cracked in the pan after the first use. It didn't crack up completely dry to falling out of the pan but more like a lightning bolt pattern. Then I got the M Graham Quin rose which is warmer than the qor Quin magenta. I must admit, I use the Quin magenta more. Thanks again.😘

      I have QOR as well and it cracked on me too. Out of all of the High Chroma set tubes, it is the only one with a crack, but it does not have that Winsor&Newton dry crack look, still rewets well. Maybe it's a pigment characteristic...

    Thank you for the video, Oto! I find this comparison series very helpful!
    One thing I do want to mention. Though M. Graham doesn’t have a quinacridone magenta listed in their watercolor line, they do have a quinacridone violet (a PV19 that’s more violet). You explained in the video how quin. magenta can be made with PV19 as well. So I was wondering, could M. Graham’s quin. violet be their version of quin. magenta, just under a different name?

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's most likely. However, this series is about comparing colors by their name, so that's why M. Graham's Quin Violet wasn't included.

    I have a question and I apologize because it isn't about this particular helpful video. I like to use some watercolor pastels. I understand that I can water down any color and get the washed out effect of pastel versions but in order to have consistent tints and for convenience I have bought a couple of what I perceive as pastels from Holbeins, such one if the pinks and lavender, and I also made up some pastel tints in pans by adding some Sennelier Chinese white to straight pigments. however I have read some artists declaring that the mixtures do not work as well as ready made pastel versions,that they will always look chalky and dense so I wonder if my perception of my mixes is off, and reflect personal bias since it is my own mix and I am new to painting, so who am I to question a teacher. I chose to use white watercolors and nit white gouache in effirts to create a but more transparency in my mixes. I use Sennelier Chinese white watercolor noted by Sennelier as semi transparent and good for mixing. I also use Daniel Smith titanium white for mixing for the same reason as they note it as transparent. Have you any thoughts on creating pastels with white vs. watering down pigments vs buying pastel watercolors when the artist wants a watercolor effect and not a heavy gouache effect? I did have the Prima Pastel Dreams but found the colors too pale for my needs, and they do not glaze well to try and darken them. Obviously this is not an issue when I mix my gouache paints as they are all opaque and I use artist brands of white to avoid chalkiness. Thanks for patiently reading my question and again, I apologize for going off topic but I value your opinion over other artists since you are professional and thorough in your teaching and comparison videos.

    • @OtoKano

      No worries Farmwife! I always think it's nonsense to just go ONE IS RIGHT AND ALL OTHERS ARE WRONG! kind of thing. We are all looking for different things from watercolors and doing completely different things with them so I don't believe that one thing fits everyone. I also don't think someone could say A is better than B, when they do not know whether you're trying to get the effects of A or B in the first place. There's just no hard and fast rules about what is right and wrong, especially in art. I would always say that the technique or a way of doing something that works for what you are trying to achieve is the best choice. Don't worry about teachers that say your way is wrong, your way is right for you.
