Thank you Oto! I recently did my own test between DG and MG and was shocked how differently they switched out mixed with other colors. I appreciate the transparency of DS but adore how the MG mixed to create rich vibrant colors.
I know you're doing this series by name and not pigment, but just as an FYI, Daniel Smith actually has a handful of PY42 and PY43 options including the two you mentioned (Yellow Ochre and Burgundy Yellow Ochre) as well as Mars Yellow, Transparent Yellow Oxide, Verona Gold Ochre, French Ochre, Raw Sienna Light, and Mt. Amiata Natural Sienna :) You know my fav yellow ochre in in general is DS's OG (though it used to be PY42 as well).

I own the WN Yellow Ochre, DS Yellow Ochre and DS Burgundy Yellow Ochre (a more neutral version of transparent YO), Pruche Spanish Gold Ochre (semi-opaque but beautiful) and a few student grades. I was surprised by the black paper tests, because while DS versions are very transparent, which I also prefer, the Winsor & Newton Yellow Ochre is semi-opaque at best so I'm going to have to play and test them myself now, maybe the WN version is more usable than I remember. I love using this color in skin colors, and really only have Windsor and Newton for reference, so It pleases me that it holds up well. And still, schmincke isn’t disappointing me in your series.
I ike either traditional heavy opaque yellow ochre or Schmincke Transparent one- which you should defo try, since you're into transparent watercolours if you haven't already. It's exactly what it say on the tin, with colour skewing slightly to quin gold.
THIS series is my absolute favorite and really THANK YOU SO MUCH!! next time i have to buy new colors im definitely gonna pick my favorites from this! i do wish tho that turners was here! haha i hope you reference this swatches in future reviews so we can see the comparison! :D you have done an excelent job! keep it up!
Thanks for the video! Great comparison! I like both DS and Holbein and they both seem to handle similarly. For some reason, I'm able to get a little more color harmony out of the Holbein Yellow Ochre, especially when I use it with other Holbein colors. As a side note, I'm a huge Holbein fan and they are the only other brand I use other than DS. One of the reasons I enjoy your videos so much is that you are also a Holbein fan. ha ha JDub, HOBEIN FOR THE WIN! lol You might be finding Holbein's one easier to work with other colors becase DS's one has a very low tinting strength. I'll show that more in the next episode.
You need also opaque colors for aquarelle to put co;ors in front or add it as last color to stand out. For example you need an opaque Cad Yellow middle and a Hansa Yellow deep which is transparent. This in all color groups.All great painters like turner used this method !
I loooooove yellow ocre; really interesting seeing the variations on this color in particular. Super interesting about the pigments in the Mission Gold - I had noticed my MG YO doesn't quite behave like my other YOs, so it's super interesting seeing how it behaves next to more traditional versions of the color. That black transparency sheet, besides being super useful again, is so aesthetically pleasing to me. Truthfully, YO is a color I'm not that picky about, since I tend to use it for monochrome stuff - quick studies or value "sketching" and the like -, but I have a feeling I may change my mind after seeing the next episode and how these mix. Transparent granulating Yellow Ochres for the win! Daniel Smith's hue is also perfect, not as yellow and softer than the rest. However it's a bit weird to handle straight from the tube (very gooey) and is a bit hard to rewet. You're right it is weaker as well. I'd say a good Raw Sienna may be a better option to have. They fulfil similar role in most palettes.

Did you try out Daler Rowney artists paint? I ask because they are on sale at Gerstaecker in Germany and I could get some at a good price. Also Schmincke Horadam is really a lot cheaper in Germany in one buys at the art supply stores (not the craft stores... there the prices are frightening!).

I love Yellow Ochre, it's a mainstay on all my palettes. I really love Mission Gold watercolors, probably because they were the first Professional/Artist quality paint I tried, but I really can't defend them on this one. I have both, and I do use both for different applications. Ironically, Holbein is one of my favorites, despite not loving Holbein as a whole; they have so many double and triple mixes, and a lot of really opaque colors. It's definitely a brand where I pick and choose colors because some of them are quite nice, Yellow Ochre being one of them.
in my mixed pro set my fav yellow ochre is the gold ochre by sennelier with a raw sienna in place of the yellow ochre, I also thought that yellow ochre just came in opaque, thanks for the video
This is such a underestimated MIXING color! Most palettes have a yellow ocher and i think most people woll use it here and there....but try it as your ONLY yellow and you will find that you dont really need any other yellow.
I'm realizing that this is not a color I use a lot... It's in most starter sets but for some reason, I don't reach for it often. There are so many variants of hue on that pigment that I usually end up with one of those, preferably one with a slightly redder hue. It was interesting to see the opacity of the pigment on the black paper. Looking forward to part 2 ♥
I also don't use ochre really often. But I got a tube of the transparent ochre Schmincke (657) they introduced in 2017. The paint has an absolute weird consistency, so weird I actually wrote them to ask whether this should be like this. They said yes, also with the other new transparent browns due to the production way, but worst with the ochre... but... after trying it out and getting used to the strange consistency, I fell in love with it! While there are colours I don't mind using that are rather opaque, it seems that I don't like that in ochre.
Me too, I don't use yellow ochre at all unless I am sketching a building in Edinburgh. For the longest time I did not have ochre in my palette, and I am still thinking of taking it out again because of how little I use it.
@@saraccinocf it’s the weirdest texture! And it’s so unexpected from Schmincke. But like you, I get past that lumpy texture because I LOVE all 3 of the transparent earth tones I got from Schmincke. Especially the yellow ochre. It’s the best ochre I’ve ever tried!
Want to see what you make of yellow ochre.. i usually reach for raw sienna and if i want to warm it up a touch i just add some quin gold.. ochre often get's muddy on me and since i got that ds palette i hardly use it. goodluck with the braces; that feeling of talking with your mouth full will pass,did with my kid anyhow.

Something I found very interesting... I recently bought the Winsor Newton professional watercolor sticks to have a chance to try out their watercolor range as so far I only had Magenta... Their yellow ochre pigment is a mixture of Py42 and PR101, I was literally just wondering if it would be different in tube form as I was curious they had two pigments. So far my theory is they've either added the pigment as a less expensive filler or because they have some sort of waxy base maybe they have to add a pigment to it for strength...it just has me so curious right now because it's just PR42 in tube form! Lol And for comparison: I also bought the D.S sticks but those are identical to the tube and beautiful as always. there's no fillers, D.S never disappoints me. 1 stick = 3 full pans 12 ml so 3 ml less than tubes but I got a great sale so saved a ton of money. I just know you're a color junkie like me lol so thought you'd find it interesting too :)
@@OtoKano the two colors are very similar. The sticks are still a shade lighter, when I examine closely the yellow sinks into the paper and the PR101 shows most on the raised tooth. I started researching a little bit looking at the costs of PY42/43 & the different PR101 pigments... now I realize they are in France but, I imagine the cost difference is about the same and PR 101costs more... So I don't think it's a filler to cut cost. These pigment sticks have a waxy feel and I'm hypothesizing they do it because the binder lessens the vibrancy and strength of the stick. Which I do find you get less pigment load than the regular tubes.
I just find so interesting that they are different. The D.S sticks have no fillers but are softer and harder to use like a crayon but I just put them in my pans. Haha this has me so intrigued! Xo
I love my M Grahams, but as loyal as I am, I just do not like their yellow ochre. It's so muddy, opaque and to me look way worse in person that what's shown on your screen. It literally dulls any puddle of color I add it to on my pallet. I use it mainly for portraits and so I'm interested in glazing properties. I may have to go dark side and get some of that daniel smith 😂

Most of Mission Gold's 105 paints are just "ready-mixed" shades from a few, hardly more than 25, pigments. And most of them organic. They are apparently in the indoor wall paint business, rather than Artist paints. 😒 . And that kind of lack of seriousness is typical for most Asian manufacturers. ...printing ink pigments are so strong, bright and cheap, I guess 😑. If it must be Asian, stick to Holbein and Paul Rubens.
Yellow Ochre is NOT one of my favorite colors. Something about this color that I just don't like. I prefer using MGraham's Raw Sienna or Eve Bolt's Spanish Gold Ochre if I need a color similar. Yellow Ochre to me is just... blech... >.< in any brand. But that's just me xD

It is very nice and soft, perfect for more subtle palette. Unfortunately it kind of gets lost in my very bright palette!

I really like w&n’s gold ochre which is made from PY43 it’s a very warm almost orangey yellow ochre

I only have the Schmincke one and I use it often, but I really like the Sennelier yellow Ochre... I need this one!

Yellow ochre and either viridian or phthalo blue make a great sap green. I love yellow ochre.

I love yellow ochre when painting next to a blue. I find it rarely has a tendency to mix to green if they happen to bleed.

Paul Reubens has a color they call yellow sienna… Nice color

The Van Gogh has dark hard edges which is unfortunate. It looks like the M Graham is the best of these.

I love yellow Ochre in transparent washes and mixes-- not so much in mass tone.
Oh, and I like WN and Van Gogh yellow ochres because they seem a little brighter.
Yellow Ochre is NOT one of my favorite colors. Something about this color that I just don't like. I prefer using MGraham's Raw Sienna or Eve Bolt's Spanish Gold Ochre if I need a color similar. Yellow Ochre to me is just... blech... >.< in any brand. But that's just me xD
