Another good video from Mark and Adorama, even seven years later. Glad that you added in the discussion of placing the model in the shade with a darker background. I attended an outdoor wedding a while back a d the photographer was an amateur with a nice camera, but no speed lights, and took many family photos with a sky background. I was cringing.
So good!! You answer the practical important questions other videos seem to leave out. Not being able to shoot in this lightning is like not being able to shoot 80% of the day ahah.
Although I have not yet tried HSS, it is an intriguing aspect of flash photography. I have purchased a flash capable of HSS, and I truly appreciate your time and effort in these videos to help us learn. Stay safe.
Because 2 reasons: - it's an educative video and not everyone has a 5D mark iii ^^ - Mr Wallace might be sponsored by PocketWiard (have a look on youtube). Not a grief, I would do the same if I had the opportunity ^^ But as always, Mr Wallace masters its subjects: such dedication in sharing his knowledge and such comprehensive videos ^^
You stole my old vertical flash trick !! Glad you said this technique is a "last ditch solution" --- having done many weddings I always try to move people to a better spot --- but --- its true that sometimes that can't be done -- nor a reflector holding assistant - so this is the last line of defense. Your model is is hot enough to fog the lens !
Hello Mark, Where was this video shot? I just found out about 6mo ago you are in Phoenix. I don't know how I missed that fact all these years. I am an Arizona native and now I always want to know where your videos are done. Keep up the great work.
Hi Mark and thanks for your wonderful videos ! I just have one question : if the model would be in the shade in this example, would you adjust the white balance to 7000 Kelvin for instance and, if yes, would you also add a CT blue gel on the flash ? Many thanks for your next answer, Olivier
I got a question please ... does the high speed sync work with Nikon creative lighting system on the Nikon D7000 ? or I have to stick to the normal flash sync speed while using the CLS system ?
I have just purchased a yongnuo 560 IV and have a GH4 camera. I am having trouble figuring out how to set up the flash and camera for the high speed sync. Thoughts?
A very tiny point but at the end of the shoot, Le Ann looks bored and distracted. She is looking off camera, at the ground, off to the side everywhere but at the camera or at you. Did she need to be somewhere else, or need a break? The video and the learning points were great, and you delivered the info quickly thoroughly and did not repeat yourself 11 times like some folks seem to do. Thanks, I subscribed for more.
+Matthew Elyash I agree. She looked like she was asked to do it at the last minute and no interest at all. No light in her eyes.. She might have good body but no personality.
+FIT MAUS We get a model to be entertained and to learn about Flash. If she was a big gruffy prick with a fat guts, there would not be one person on the planet that would sit through and watch this video... right? You need to grow up and wake up I think. You seriously don't get it. No one wants to watch ugly people. Fact.
+FIT MAUS Actually, I just had another look at the video and he would have been better off without her. The tree had more personality and she is only good for one thing anyway. put a bag over her head and it would be fine.
High Speed Sync: Ep 141: Great show, love watching Mark's tutorials. I've learned a lot. My question is I bought a SB-700 speed light but can't find FP settings on my Nikon D3200 DX camera. Does this mean I cannot increase my shutter speed above 1/200 with flash on? Thank you, Bob.
elwelcom No. Our are similar and there is no setting for high sync. I still use the flash off camera in manual mode. Play with the flash power and camera shutter speed to get the results you want.
Hi there! can I set up my pop up flash camera at high sync? and I checked Pocket Wizard Flex Transceivers TT5 and it's over $400.00 and that's to way out of my budget and I will like to know is there's another affordable option?
I have a Nikon D5100 and an SB-910 flash. There is no Auto FP in the camera setting to turn on ,my question is ,by using a remote trigger can I go into low shutters speeds as 1/4000 , 1/8000 of a second. Thanks in advance
Hi there, I have a question about high speed sync. Let me start by saying that I've used HSS before, So I do understand how it works. However today I was doing a photoshoot and noticed an issue with the photo. I noticed that the top part was coming out a lot brighter than the button, even though I was using HSS to shoot. The shoot took placed during the day around 4pm when it was still bright but not overly sunny. The lens was using an F2.8 aperture. My plan was to use the fill flash to avoid shadows on my subjects face and using HSS so that I could use a faster shutter speed to avoid overexposing the image. With HSS both camera and flash can go as far as 1/8000 of a sec. any advise you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
Hi sir. I'm using canon 6D mark too. I borrowed speedlite canon 580 ex ii. So how many trigger do I need to buy ? I saw some people put one trigger on camera and another one on the flash and some people use only one trigger. Why they do that ? Later I'm going to buy my own flash. Probably 470ex ai. Do I need to buy two trigger or not ? Thank you for responding to me.
Do I have a high speed sync mode on the Nikon D5000? It doesn't come up in the menu. I also have the Nikon SB 600. Please HELP! thx Enjoy the heck out of your videos Mark...keep up the great work.
Can I shoot High speed synch with a Canon 7D to a high speed non Canon off camera strobe as long as I have the HSS transmitter on the hot shoe of my camera
Hi, please I need help.... I have got a Canon speedlight 550ex and I would like to use the high speed sync with a Canon remote. Does any Canon remote will do the job with the speedlight 550ex which is a hold flash ? Many Thank in advance. Kind regards. Victor
Hello I have a 5D Mark III and I just got a Flashpoint 600pro and I can’t seem to do high speed sink. My shutter will not go above 1/200 even after pressing the high speed sink button on the strobe.
Hi Mark do you know if the transceiver and the receiver needs both to be High Speed Sync ? Or can we use pocketwizard TT5 as transceiver which is HSS and use any other pocket wizard as receiver ( that is not HSS)? the flash doesnt need to be hss. Thanks Antoine
Excellent videos as always, very informative. Just had some queries regarding HSS. 1) Instead of using a Speedlight as the key light, can I use my Elinchrom 200 ws strobe (flash duration is 1/2000 sec at full power) (set to slave mode) and fire it with a Speedlight mounted on camera on its lowest power 2) If the above scenario is possible then is it true that I CAN NOT take my shutter speed higher than 1/2000 because this is the shortest flash duration of my strobe at full power 3) To overcome the limitation in step 2 can I dial down the power of my strobe to let say half power, which brings its flash duration to lets say 1/4000. Now, what happens to the exposure if I keep my shutter speed at 1/2000 and 1/4000 in this situation. I think if someone could answer this, I would be very grateful and I am sure this will probably help a lot of other people as well. Trust me I have put a lot of time to frame the questions so as to make my self as clear as possible
+Campbell cts - I have an SB910 and you don't set up anything on the flash itself. You're obviously shooting Nikon and you do that through the MENU on the camera. Look for the menu item that says Flash Synch speed and set it to FP 200 or FP250 HSS.
Ok, so does the camera need to have HSS as well or just the flash? Or is it just the transmitter that has to have HSS? I recently saw a transmitter calle the Cactus V6II and Im not sure if it is meant to give the camera HSS capability or if I am just overthinking this...
So, i have a Canon EX430 ii speedlight, and a couple of cactuc v5 transmitters/receivers. I use a Canon rebel t5i currently, and I would love to get high shutter speed shots using my flash off-camera. Is high speed sync possible with this beginner system?
Hi guys, I have high speed sync turned on in my D600 and I am using an SB700. But I still get shutter curtains showing on my shot even if I use a shutter speed of only around 300. I know I must be doing something dumb, but any help would be gratefully received.
Do you guys have these videos in something higher than 720p? At least 1080p? They look horrible and when you're trying to see details in examples - defeats the purpose. Videos are awesome but higher quality (even 2013) was available. :)
I have a Nikon 7000 and Nikon speed light sb700. Question about High Speed Sync: If my camera is set to Camdr mode at Flash sync speed 1/320-Auto FP, does my SB700 set at Remote automatically flash at the required higher power?
I use 2 x TT5's but they are unpredictable. Sometimes they go off, sometimes they don't. Tried them out today and my flash never went off at all :( I did notice, however, that Mark has those little antennas open. Could this be where I am going wrong???
Hey Mark, I know that I can set my nikon d7000 to high speed mode, I have the phottix strato 5n1 wireless triggers, will they work for high speed? My flashes are not hss. May have to upgrade. Your thoughts.
I have D7200 with Ad200 Godox flash. Once I have my XPRO on HSS, high do you know what is the correct shutter speed? Thank in advance for helping. I’m new to HSS.
I know this video is old, but it help me no like other. Thank you Mark!!
Mark is amazing with his instructions!
Mark thanks for you tutorials, very easy to follow. I have watched most of your tutorials helped a great deal.

excellent tip! This will come in handy when shooting senior portraits outside!

Absolutely top notch advice, full of useful concise information, thanks Mark and Adorama TV

Goodness Leann, couldn't take my eyes off you!
You do a great job thoroughly explaining your point in an easy to understand way. Thanks so much!
Thoroughly enjoyed it. I have learned something useful here Thank you.

Thanks Mark, finally a tutorial that made sense and easy to follow
This is the best most simplified high speed sync tutorial on TH-cam. 👏👏👏
Hello Mark,
Where was this video shot? I just found out about 6mo ago you are in Phoenix. I don't know how I missed that fact all these years. I am an Arizona native and now I always want to know where your videos are done. Keep up the great work.
good video Mark.
Yes if it's the Sigma EF 610 Super. No if it's the EF 610 ST
Awesome Video!! Thank You!!!
Thank you! Mark Wallace!
I love your videos!
Thanks Mark!!... very informative
What is the product you have on the flash? Is it another FlexTT5 or a MiniTT1?
Could the same thing be done by using an Nd filter with a speedlight if your camera doesn't have high speed sync?
Hey Mark,
Could this problem be solved by reducing the exposure?
Thanks,
Raj.
this is great!
Has this been updated using the ST-E3 and Canon RT flashes?
Yes, if your flash is powerful enough. Use ND-filters to get below your sync-speed (~1/200th) and use your flash normally.
thank you leanne
Late to the party but what types of transceivers would be accessible for canon cameras that would be just like this now?
What mode do you use to take the shot? Manual?
Thank you Brian. I discovered that eventually, and am glad to say that I like the creative ability to set my sb-700 manually.
Thanks for the tutorial mark!
@snapy Mark Wallace! What about manual flash settings?
where is the episode 17 on sync speed? clicking on your video does not bring it up
can you still use high speed sync with the mini TT1 and a plus 3, or a plus x?
Good video , thank you
So to use high speed synch, the camera has to be in manual mode to adjust the shutter speed independently from the aperture setting?
Yes. Otherwise your camera will automatically adjust aperture to compensate.
Good morning... How do you set up High speed sync using a Yungnuo 560 vi on a Canon 70D? Help please!!!
Fab Lab at the end !
great info
good job
Im confused though, is the HSS capability have to be on just the flash, transmitter or both?
I have just purchased a yongnuo 560 IV and have a GH4 camera. I am having trouble figuring out how to set up the flash and camera for the high speed sync. Thoughts?

HSS is not available on the D3000 series or the D5000 series of camera's. You must have at least a D7000 or 7100 to get HS sync.
What metering mode did you use?
what metering mode are you using here?
What was the bracket you had for the flash?

key mark.......the screen show the 5D M3 but .....the camera u mention 1Ds m2 ??? any way thanks a lot Mark
I love u guys tips and Technics thank you...

Does TTL light metering work when the speedlite and the distance of the lens is not same?
what is the process to get internship and learn with you?
How can I do high speed sync with a Nikon D5100 and the SB700?? is it possible??
Hello I have a 5D Mark III and I just got a Flashpoint 600pro and I can’t seem to do high speed sink. My shutter will not go above 1/200 even after pressing the high speed sink button on the strobe.
So,... to utilize HSS we can use any speedlite?
Add a 7" reflector with diffusion to get softer light?
thanks Miley, that's what I have. the yongnuo ex568 with hss. they're great flashes. thanks.
Sold my 5D Mark II and bought a Sony A7r instead.
Now, wondering what HSS-enabled trigger to use with the Sony.
Have you suggestions, Mark?
Thanks.
You can also use a battery powered portable strobe system that would allow you to use a soft box with added power.
can putting flash on camera is also possible to get same results of high speed syncing
You can use HSS using the pop-up flash as the master but only if you set it to NOT contribute any light to the scene.
Hi Mark do you know if the transceiver and the receiver needs both to be High Speed Sync ? Or can we use pocketwizard TT5 as transceiver which is HSS and use any other pocket wizard as receiver ( that is not HSS)? the flash doesnt need to be hss.

Hi, there. Do you think 1/4000 s is a constraint for high sync speed? Do I need to go to 1/8000 necessarily? Tks
David De Vita check your flash specs. if supports HSS, it should say which speed supports.
I enjoyed your tutorial. However, I would greatly appreciate be told the steps to get HSSs on my Nikon SB900. Many thanks, Campbell

Hi Mark, is it possible to do the Auto FP on Nikon SB900 in manual mode instead of TTL mode?

Many thanks. That was very useful. Could anyone guide me how high-speed sync could be done in D80 and SB 600.(I did not find in the menu)

I am using a Canon EOS 70D and my speed light is a Nikon SB-800 How do you program the high speed sync?
You can't really use high speed sync with different brands. It needs to be a canon camera with a canon flash, or a nikon camera with a nikon flash.
Joseph F Photography or a godox system which does hss.......
Tom Bridge Indeed. I do have Godox X1 system with TT685 units (integrated receivers) and works great.
Canon m6 ii mark does it have

How did I turn on higher speed sync on my elinchrome studio light ?
Cool vid....
Does HSS work if the speedlight is in the hot shoe?
Yes
How can I use high shutter speed keeping built-in flash on? (I need to keep built-in flash on to use speedlight in remote mode.)
Thanks
Very useful
does high speed flash sync also reduces distance of flash firing or actually it affects range of flash firing
i own d5300 does it support hss flash ? and please recommend what hss speed light will work with my d5300 nikon i am new on all this
What power did you have the flash st?
Marie Van Hecke as he said, flash was on TTL...
thank you, I thought ttl meant it is on the camera, just confused here....

i liked the first photo, nice buble action
Please can you tell me how to achieve faster shutter speeds than 1/200 with the Nikon D3200 and an SB-700 speedlight?
Make sure that flash is HSS capable
The D-3200 in a entry level camera and doesn't have HSS capability.
does Flex TT5 work on canon mark iv at all?
how is the model? she is new?
Is there HSS on canon 7D + Sigma 610 flashgun?
Does a canon m50 support HSS?
I have D7200 with Ad200 Godox flash. Once I have my XPRO on HSS, high do you know what is the correct shutter speed? Thank in advance for helping. I’m new to HSS.
