When railways were at their beginning here in the USA, Welsh iron workers were sought out and many migrated here. The B & O Railroad was the first commercial rail in the Americas and it was predominantly Welsh ironworkers who built the first rails. This ironworks was located in Mount Savage, Maryland in the Allegheny Mountains. Ironwork is large in the history of Wales.

I have a number of American DNA cousins of Welsh ancestors, through Ancestry, but I haven't worked out the connections, yet. Thanks for the history lesson. I knew that the Welsh migrated to the USA and used their coal mining skills but didn't know that they were also involved in the railways. Australia is a huge exporter of iron-ore.

I've actually been making them myself for 30 odd years and still haven't mastered it but I'll keep practicing.
