12 Most Hated Places to Live in Wales

- What are the most hated places in Wales? There are surely two sides to every coin. When you see the passion with which some people admire and love their homes in Wales and name nice seaside towns, dockyards, communities, villages, and hamlets in Wales, you will be left to wonder if there can ever be anywhere hated in Wales. Yet, there are places in Wales that are also passionately derided, mocked, and treated with utmost disdain. While doing our due diligence, we discover that some hated towns in Wales are not hated absolutely, not by all. In this video, we have compiled the list of the 12 most hated places to live in Wales. Please note that many of them are also among the worst towns in Wales.
12. Cwmbran
We’re kick-starting this in Cwmbran, a town in the county borough of Torfaen. A lot of terrible things have been said about the residents and the by fellow residents and outsiders. However, the main reason we are mentioning this town is the safety concern. While it might not top in the overall crime rates, you have to look more closely to find up to three towns of its status with a higher crime rate in Wales. Thus, this town is hated, not for environmental factors, but for human factors, occasioned by the residents.
11. Colwyn Bay
Colwyn Bay, a town, community, and seaside resort in Conwy County Borough on the northern coast has expanded to the point of becoming the second-largest community and business center in the north of Wales and the 14th largest in the whole of Wales. Yet, it has little or nothing to show for that economically. It’s a drab and miserable place to live. Compounding its woes are its high crime rates. Its beach is dirty and hasn’t shown anything for the efforts to make it better; the horrendous concrete building appears as if the last time it was maintained was 1970.
10. Aberdare
We once argued against the notion that this is a town loved by criminals. Yet, we can’t turn a blind high to the high crime rate of this town in the Cynon Valley area of Rhondda Cynon Taf. As of the last check, it’s the third most dangerous small town in Mid-Glamorgan. You just need to see what we’ve discovered about this town in our video about the 12 worst places to live. If it is conveniently and justifiably listed in that ranking, we all know that no one will love to live in one of the worst places.
9. Fairbourne
Fairbourne, a tiny village nestled between Snowdonia National Park and the Irish Sea has been begging for a slot on this ranking. The place is currently facing an existential crisis, no thanks to the high risk of future flooding as a result of climate change. A while ago, Natural Resources Wales (NRW), the organization in charge of flood management in Wales, spent £6.8m on strengthening 2.9 kilometers of concrete tidal defenses so that over 400 properties in the town can be protected from storm surges and flooding, and to complete other constructions. But we’re not happy to let you know that the Gwynedd Council, in charge of this village has said since 2014 that it couldn’t maintain flood defenses of the village indefinitely. By 2054 latest, the village will no longer be livable. Who would ever love to live in such a place?
8. Denbighshire
You might want to argue against the inclusion of Denbighshire on this list if you consider some of its towns like Llangollen, a community situated on the River Dee. However, when it comes to how good and convenient a place is for living, the entire county is generally hated, except for a pocket of towns there like Llangollen and Ruthin. Reviewers have not been generally kind to this county in the northeast of Wales.

Clickbait. No evidence, jusr poor guesswork.
Colwyn bay is a lovely place, the beach there is golden sand and the place has a new pier and amazing nature walks. The people are friendly and I have never seen any trouble. It has a good community and I prefer living here to the midlands where there is more crime and it’s much more dirtier in the air with hardly any countryside.
Thanks, I'm moving to Colwyn bay from Brum in a few weeks and I was glad to find this comment.
@@davidturley4916 I would move back to Wales in a heartbeat also from the Midlands!!
I live above Old Colwyn. And theirs lots of groups you can join. I moved here in 2007 full time from Tameside Manchester. I feel safe walking around Colwyn Bay everybody knows me and are friendly. Where ever you live you will find good things and bad it's called reality
Love the area go there every year and have doe since the 60’z as a young child , would move there also in a heartbeat it’s beautiful and lots to see and do
I moved to port talbot from harrow (London) a few years back. I love it here. It’s full of areas of natural beauty, the people are friendly and welcoming, despite the steel works there is no pollution (compared to london at least). It could do with some tlc from the local council and some commercial investments but overall it’s a great place to live. I don’t agree with the no2 ranking.
I lived in Milford and in Haverford most weekends , great place to live !
@@curtisducati I was working there yesterday, it’s beautiful, much nicer than port talbot. 😂
Port Talbots a pure shit hole
''As a result of climate change'' - Bollocks.
Who ever made this list is off his head
No bars in Pontypridd? Plenty of pubs. The Tumble Inn, The Patriot, The Llanover Arms, The Bunch of Grapes just for starters.
Tumble Inn, love it!
Remember the Colliers? The New Inn, Half Moon. The Regent on a Saturday night, followed by a stoned stumble into the Georgian club, or Sweaty Betty's in Mill street. The old Market Bar. Was it the Pony and Trap, just up the hill from the station? And let's not forget the Wheatsheaf. Man, I'm showing my fkin' age now.🙃
Apalling! 😝 Presenter has no idea about these places and should at least learn to pronounce their names before posting his unsolicited vitriol ❤🏴❤
I agree. I don't speak Welsh, but I would like to hear it spoken properly!
Propa, Talk Tidy mun
We love living in Aberdare. If you look into any area, you will find crime, but apart from the sad twats with their extra loud hatchback cars, screaming up the main road sometimes, I can honestly say that Aberdare is a great town to live, it's convenient, some decent shops and great cafes and restaurants. I also find it very friendly, which is something, coming from someone who doesn't generally like Wales anymore.
I am also originally from Aberdare...great town in the '70's and '80's...worse now however...I'm Danilo's brother from Joes Fish Bar in Whitcombe St. by the way!!! Best Fish &chips in Aberdare
Hi yes if the antisocial behaviour in Aberdare would calm doen it would be great unfortunately it seems to be going in the opposite direction
I completely agree with numver 1 being Rhyl. Whilst holidaying in wales I was advised not to visit Rhyl whilst staying in North Wales. I now know why, completely run down with very rude scouse staff in the hotels and literally dog shit the length of every pavement
Rhyl is Liverpool's dumping ground.
Turdtowns does this better and with good pronunciation of the Welsh names. (Apart 😢 from Penrhys.) This is like a bad news report from Channel 5 . When he says Aberdare, it sounds depressing.❤
Yeah this is definitely a shit version of turdtowns.
I'm from Portapotty, its not that shitty
Good channel that
This man needs to follow a course in Welsh pronunciation to gain credibility!
The way he pronounces Aberdare sounds like the English equivalent of 'unlucky' or 'that's a shame' .❤
Prynhawn da.
He’s not speaking Welsh, ergo it doesn’t matter.
Diolch.
@@MiningForPies Cynon pronounced as synon? yes it matters.
@@dronez7884 no, it doesn’t. Unless he’s speaking welsh. As he’s not not, it doesn’t.
@@MiningForPies Ah right. Even though Cynon does not have an english equivalent, it is OK to pronounce it synon, it doesn't matter. gotcha.....ignorant sunt.
Rhyl still the undisputed champion
So no mention of Flint, Shotton, Connah's Quay or Garden City?🤔
Or Pembroke Dock or Milford Haven.
People from Flint sound like scoucers to me???
@@shaundavenport621Thats because they are .
This guy havent got a clue
Residents dislike the town for its lack of mountain biking???
as I agree with most of these places I have to disagree with Fairbourne, my family has been going to Fairbourne for over 65 years and it is a lovely place the locals are lovely and so are the geographic elements like the beach and the lovely mountain walks. The miniature railway also gives this village a lovely feeling. because of recent events ( such as the flood warning ), the town really come together to fight the crises. it is a lovely place and I would really recommend it to anyone.
Yes, it's an interesting visit and scenic.
3 Years ago I tried to get a place to live permanently in Fairbourne and sadly failed. Its a great location. Lots of fishing just over the sand dunes. I've heard all the BS about global warming causing the area to flood. But..facts are facts. Just down the road from Fairbourne is Harlech with its fine castle. When that castle was built, the base of it was just above SEA LEVEL! Now it's a hell of a way over the sea. The sea levels will NEVER rise enough to go back to the times the castle was built. Fairbourne is safe and I'd still move there in a heart beat.
the way you pronounce Cynon proves how little effort you put into your videos.
Seriously have u ever been to Colwyn Bay?! It's like the complete opposite of what you just said!
Sorry for laughing at you.
@@bensalter7997 do u disagree?
@@bensalter7997 u gonna answer me or what?!
The guy who made this video is a m0ron
Did he say it wasn't a shithole?
Port Talbot isn't that bad, has a decent town centre and excellent scenery. It's only the steelworks that make it feel grey.
Treasure island.
Swansea; twinned with Chernobyl….

Suprised to see Llantwit Major on the list - it's a decent place. I live in Barry and although not terrible, it is objectively worse than Llantwit. Newport deserves #1 - a slam dunk!
Llantwit Major is a bit Posh
@@don1estelle
I agree , very posh I lived and worked in LLANTWIT MAJOR and LLANMAES ,I have moved around many areas but I still think of home in GLYNCORRWG ,it was a wonderful village , loved every minute. 🏴🏴🏴🏴
use an Ai that can at least pronounce welsh names before you conjur this clickbait hate.
What a load of nonsense . Badly researched and careless.
Llantwit major?
Llantwit is a nice area and expensive to live there, no one local ever says anything bad about llantwit.
Sorry for laughing at you. Sorry for laughing at you.
Is he messin' Llangollen and Ruthin are sound.
I never really liked newport when i get off the coach i cant wait to get to my hometown Caerphilly only one thing i do like about newport is the 7 bridge and the view over the bank from the bridge
Love your video. It's obvious that you have never been to wales. As your probmnounsiation is shocking. I like in Port Talbot and Love it there the people are very friendly and the town is certainly better than some other towns in wales. We also have a fabulous beach and sea front. ❤❤
Surprised that Llanelli wasn't on the list
What’s wrong with Llinelli?
To be fair Llanelli has some outstanding qualities and some deprived areas. Llanelli like Swansea is bordered by some shite satellite towns.
The first picture is of Brockwier which is in England.....
Mountain ash ,ely cardiff ,abbervan , rhymney tredegar, bargoed, merthyr tydfil, cwmbran, abberdare, pant side, deri, pontlotyn, tredegar
What about mountain ash
Pontycummer is pretty vile too
I should point out about Rhyl though it had a really nice sea front with a old Victorian enclosed heated garden like Kew, but all was got rid of so that a few individuals and the town council could make themselves some money
with the Aberdare entry Cynon is pronounced with a hard C (like K) but agree on the town's entry...
Greetings from Blackwood 😘
You should definitely have added Llanelli to that list
Llannelli is my hometown..I haven't lived there since the early eighties and find it hard to believe its gone that far downhill in a generation. It's always going to to be special to me.Found out the other day that my old school has gone.
@shaundavenport621 it's been ruined by mass EU immigration in the mid 2000's. Poles moved in their thousands and took over entire streets, committed a lot of crimes in the area, refused to integrate, put pressure on local services and caused lots of social issues.
Wow,I went to the Griag school and have happy memories of walking along the railway tracks from Seaside to Pwhll every morning. Wonderful people back then.Had to move to England and live with family after losing both parents by the age of 13.Had it not been for that I would no doubt still be there as I was very happy. It will always be a special place to me. Even if my Llannelli has long gone.🥲Lazy summer days at Swiss Valley. OK I'm off as this is making me homesick. Thanks for your reply.God bless!
Neath?
I'm surprised Bargoed isn't on there.
oh and newport... the first photo shown is of newport in pembrokeshire not Gwent :) the pembs one is quite nice, but yes newport gwent needs razing
Merthyr lacking in mountain biking. Bike park wales, one of the best in the UK, if not Europe.
I'm moving to Wales soon 🎉
Don’t!
a good example of read the comments and watch as little as possible !
I grew up in Aberdare and went to the worst school...Blaengwawr comp . The kids were awful bullies.
FYI Merthyr Tydfil has one of the best mountain biking centers in the uk...Bike Park Wales.
I live in Portapotty. I must say , its was bit stinky here
Please pronounce our towns properly, we may dislike certain towns to live in but we make sure say their names correctly.
Only 12!?!... I suppose they wanted to keep the video short.
Sinon Valley in Rhondda Sinon Taf, Cynon, the C is like Cat
Heard the word uncouth in your video after a long time.
Seriously ? Don't you think you should learn to say the names of towns and counties correctly before rubbishing them on TH-cam ?
Colwyn Bay was quite vibrant in the 70s but went downhill soon after. Some of the pictures of Colwyn Bay are actually of there, but some, like the dirty beach, are elsewhere. Rhyl is and always has been s**t
I am amazed that Blaenau Ffestiniog and Bethesda are not on this list!
Ye and don't forget Bangor...
Turdtown does this much better, and pronounces the Welsh place names much more accurately.
LESSONS IN PRONUNCIATION WOULD BE APPRECIATED.ROBERT J.PARRY
I like Rhyl….i usually go there once a year and to Abergele….lovely..the place is a hidden gem now..its reputation is outdated..
The pictures of Newport were of two different Newports
Bro can’t even say cwmbran
He is a m0ron
the beach at Rhyl is beautiful, the town rough and run down
denbighsire should be replaced with flitntshire i live that county and it's the biggest dump in wales, especially where i live now since the council has sold our village out to a bunch of gypsies now everyone in the village is leaving it
Jesus this is inaccurate
I'm 90% certain this was AI generated.
I've visited many of these places down the years especially the South Wales towns mentioned and there's one town not included that pales the others onto insignificance and that's Llanelli. You'll never find a more crime ridden drug infested part of the world if you tried a truly depressing blot on the landscape.
I left Llannelli in the early eighties after the death of my parents and have since then never met kinder, nicer people in all of my travels! It pains me to know the excellent set of morals and heart didn't filter down to the next generations! It's always going to be "home" to me good or bad!🥲👍👍.
What a load of crap this video is. Narrator claims to have gathered info about Aberdare, but failed to find out what proper (and easy) pronunciation of name of valley is. Every town has its bad elements, but the good in most these towns outweigh that. I lived in Aberdare for 12 years, and I can tell you it's a lovely town.
I just watch for the pronunciations, sinon taff and no bars in ponty lmao and the very old pictures of the towns one being from the 60s.
Pontypridd and Merthyr are not too bad at all. Both are quite liveable towns with good facilities. Some villages in-between and in the area are awful, though and are like going back decades in a deprived country after a civil war. You could have easily included Tonypandy on the list instead.
Iv lived in Rhyl my hole life and its a good community where the people stick together
The problem is the north has just been left behind with very little funding from Welsh government
All the funding goes to the south
Merthyr has Bike park wales so how does it lack in mountain biking🤣
i love colwyn bay the sea front and surrounding areas
Agree with other posters. Definitely going on the “don’t recommend list”. 👎🏻
ncbfn 1:40 1:41
I WAS A Hgv driver for 51 years all over Wales the nicest people and nicest places to go to blame the government for taking all their jobs and lives from them the world would not be as it is to day thank you there's not one hated place in Wales that know off .
😂 You need to come to Llanelli we have all that and more drugs , crime, rubbish, etc
I'm of welsh desent. Garth john price
I had a gf from Wales. Very good looking . We met in Australia. Worked at the same hotel in Perth
Theres also 12 most hated places to live in england uk
Possibly the home town of the author?
yeh all of it.
This is like a documentary on Italian war hero's and Mongolian beauties
🤣🤣
i feel like you haven't been to many places in wales if you consider aberdare a bad place 🤦🏻♂️
Pontypridd has a fantastic park with an outdoor swimming pool. It has a thriving indoor market. It has wonderful cafes. I could go on.
Also has a heroin and drug problem.
Cwmbran, pontypool, newport. Ugh.
That means a vickwomble gotta be english
Too many councils. Too many members of that quango in Cardiff. Far too many getting paid by the public purse and doing nothing besides turn up every day. They don't even do that anymore.
History all over the places in GB
Oh dear God, the Welsh pronunciation is painful 🙈
loving the complete butchery of the welsh language, with such care free abandon!
If you enjoy listening to someone who has never been to any of these towns (if even been to Wales), and doesn't know the first thing about the place/s, then you might like like this channel. When you add to it the fact that he has no idea how pronounce the names - for example he tells us about Sinon Taff - wherever that might be!! Then he tells us about a town hated because there is no "mountain biking"..... yes folks, the town councillors need to sort out heir priorities - after all, what is a town without mountain biking facilities!!
If you believe the narrator, just about all Welsh towns are ridden with drug & alcohol problems, high crime rates. unsocable people and terrible conditions.
I would kindly suggest that you avoid thiis Learning Canteen channel, for it knows nothing - and I'm not even Welsh!
Llantwit major is not a dangerous place at all.
Just need money and support
Tredegar is rubish
Exactly. I stayed there before. Really bad place.
Misinformation and English bigotry. Sigh. The pictures showen were pretty nice on the whole. No good examples of unwashed Boyos high on drugs or truly deprived and rundown buildings. There are some pits in Wales just like in other areas of the UK, but the video showed pleasant towns and scenery, a contradiction to the narrative. Also, learn how to pronounce place names correctly.
Cinyon 😂 it’s Cynon
Let's face it, who wants to live in a country that sees rain and grey skies pretty much every day.
I just have to laugh at all the inaccuracies. Total rubbish.
If you can't even say the names of places correctly, I hardly think you can be considered an authority
I would’ve thought Wales to be a lovely quaint Country with a lot of coastline and farmland but these videos are making it sound dreadful all over.
Love wales ❤❤❤🐨🐨🐨 even I had prob pronouncing the words but I had a good teacher
Might be extremely hard to believe.
I'm Welsh and can't pronounce any of it.
Don't live in the UK, left Wales when I was 2.
Newport is a city not a town
If you can't pronounce the towns dont bother grading them.
Should have learnt place names for a start, ! Disagree with most of the facts 🤷
What nasty comments
