Change can sometimes make people feel like they are losing control over a situation or their software in this case Brian!, and this can cause resistance.
Attachment to old software habits for example: Us' Humans are creatures of habit, and it can be difficult to break old habits and adopt new ones.
We just have to do our best to teach the future and show, that us old dogs, (excuse the pun) we can learn new tricks, like taking on new software.

What I see with a lot of people who won't upgrade is miserliness. Essentially the kind of cheap people who'd rather starve to death than spend a dollar for a sandwich. I saw in all the time as a manager of a computer repair shop, less so now as an IT tech for a Fortune company-everything we have is new. The folks that are still clinging to Windows 7 for one-why? A new OS for a PC is what? $200? and Office is $6.99 a month (except that you pay in perpetuity) There are special use cases for old OSes but none that I know of exist for using outdated versions of Office. If you can't afford $6.99 a month then you probably should review your life instead of worrying about a piece of software anyway. There is another facet to this: As a tech do you think that we want to work on outdated machines? It's a headache to find drivers and parts at times but if you want to pay my $145 an hour, feel free.

@@Britec09 My older desktop and my laptop are still running Office 2010 Professional. I got two licenses through the old Home Use Program for $9.99 way back when. I don't get Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files for those machines from outside sources , so whatever security holes may still exist in the 2010 version are irrelevant. I have Office 2021 Professional Plus on my new desktop that I built. Simple Word and Excel files that I create with it open flawlessly in the 2010 versions without any warnings. I am mostly retired but if I need to interact with the outside world for the little bit of consulting work that I still perform, Office 2021 is still in support. I have seen on a MS page somewhere that there will be one more stand alone version of Office after 2021. Time will tell but I will be completely retired before that becomes important to me.

I have many customers still using Office 2010. Works fine. Never a problem.
I'm just waiting for Microsoft to pull the plug on activation online, which you still seem to have to do when installing it.
Also, Office 2010 was the best version for looks. After that 2013, 2016, and on, all looked flat, plain, monochrome, and a strain on the eyes.
I personally refuse to pay even $100/year to Microsoft...for what? To create Word and Excel documents? No thanks. There are toms of other free options out there.

In all honesty, with full respect intended the chances of being infected over a security vulnerability in Word or Excel is slimmer than my fence panels getting destroyed by the storms, like absolutely any piece of software on the whole internet that you install can (often unintentionally) open security vulnerabilities in a system, even well reputated ones. To me if you feel you have to be so extremely careful to eradicate those risks then there's no point connecting to the internet at all, but I do agree 100% with what you say about using scripts and KMS activators - you're asking for trouble when you do that. The only real concern I would have with older Office suites is Microsoft Outlook, which is actually the reason why my main PC always uses the latest version of Office because Outlook just so happens to be my #1 office program I use.
It should also be worth noting, most people back in the day never got updates for Office 2010 and older after August 2009 due to the old Office Update service being decommissioned and all the updates being moved to Microsoft Update, which was never turned on automatically. So most Office users back then were lacking security patches, including myself which I never realised until much later.

Car crashes happen every day in every country and every major city. people hacking into PCs purely because of a security vulnerability in Word or Excel happens very rarely, and hackers could easily root into a system due to a security flaw in absolutely any piece of software you install, so not quite the same thing. I'm not going against you on this Brian, like I'm 100% with you on everything else you said in the video I'm just saying this one particular thing is painted to be a bigger issue than it will be in reality. Security updates on your OS or any piece of software like Outlook which is heavily dependant on an internet service I do also agree 100% is important to keep on track with.

The point about Outlook vs the rest of the office products is the point I was going to make. Additionally, I would add that if you share files then there’s also potential vulnerability.

    • @greenonline5469
      @greenonline5469 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

This is the point I make, although any old software does open the potential for security vulnerabilities, unless it's heavily dependant on a network connection the chances of you facing issues are extremely slim. And if you've got a good AV and firewall, those chances reduce to as-good-as zero.

Agreed, if someone can tell me what heavily internet reliant parts of the majority of older Office suites (with the exception of Outlook) that open credible risk to security issues then I'd like to know. One or two very tiny features in a program won't see your entire PC taken over. People also forget that while LibreOffice is free and therefore "safer" since it's updated, you can't prove those security issues present in Office are patched in Libre or whether Libre patches their security issues promptly.

    • @gwgux

From a pure cyber security standpoint, the answer you will always get is: always
From a real world perspective, it really depends. If nobody is making malware to exploit the old software, then it's not a problem. If you run the old software offline and never expose it to the Internet or copy new files to the offline PC to open with the old software, then it doesn't matter if they write malware for it as it has no way to get to it.
Anything related to cyber security always takes the perspective that the machine running the software is connected to the Internet at all times. Cyber security professional have seen many, many cases of exploits in old software causing problems for people. While technically, the answer is "it depends", the problem is so pervasive about people not patching or upgraded to the latest fixed version of a software that anybody with an IT background will always give the blanket response about old software being a security threat.
To give the correct answer involved in-depth knowledge of the older software from its version to what it does and how it works that with so many software packages out there it's a monumental task to be 100% correct all the time. It's "safer" to say to always patch and run the latest software when possible as while it's impossible to know everything about every software out there, it's at least well known where the latest security fixes will be.
Remember, they have to have a consistent stance to take for all the novices out there that will never learn the reason behind any of this stuff. It's safer to tell the novice who doesn't know a hard drive from a computer tower to keep updated than to make assumptions about their environment.

I only see and use MS Office at work. At home, I've been using Libre Office for over a decade now. For home use, I have yet to see any reason what so ever where I needed MS Office. I have worked on documents for job hunting, buying a house, etc., and all the important home office computing tasks you can probably think of and not once have I run into a wall where I needed to have MS Office to do any of it.
There is literally no reason at all for home users to use MS Office. If you're still in school, and need it specifically for a class (several classes teach you MS Office or need you to specifically use it), you can usually get a cheap educational license for it through the school.
At work, your work place will provide it for you with their business licenses. If your work place requires it and doesn't provide it for you (or even a computer), consider changing jobs as any job that doesn't provide employees with the tools they need to do their job is a red flag of a possible toxic work environment (not in all cases, but it's if they won't provide basic tools like that, then what else aren't they doing?). Most people should never need to purchase a license for MS Office themselves these days.

I keep Windows 11 and Kaspersky fully updated AND I have "Controlled Folder Access" enabled in Windows Defender. Cool. So, I install Office 2007 and somehow, I manage to open a Word document that exploits a vulnerability in Word 2007. What are the chances that changes in Windows, itself, and in Kaspersky would protect the system from whatever tried to exploit MS Word 2007? I have no clue as this is purely hypothetical, but I wanted to pose the question anyway. Thanks for posting!

I bought a lifetime key, but that version is now not supported, I think software you buy under the guise of full and forever should be just that, we are fast heading for a subscription based software, where you own nothing and pay monthly for the use, if they update the software, and it makes yours unusable, they should just give you or upgrade yours for free, when I bought mine they never said in a few years this will not work. Due to the spy wear and data gathering, they make enough off of us.

Finally last year I just downloaded Office Pro 2021 and bought a license key for $30 and now I don't have to worry about it. I have all my office programs and they are updatable. And I guess Office Pro 2021 is actually Office 365, because when i check for updates it says Office 365 is fully updated.

Never use Open Office, use Libre Office or Only Office instead (Only office has support for tables in excel). Both are open source and free.
Open Office is d e a d software, it hasn't received any security updates in over a decade (it stopped receiving actual updates before MS Office 2010 did). For some reason there's someone who pushes changes to the code that are nothing changes like renaming a variable, then the next ""update"" will be changing the variable name back, then changing it again, then changing it back again. Pushing Open Office is worse than pushing MS Office 2010 because it's been even longer since it received any actual updates and people think it received updates because of this person who keeps pushing through changes while doing nothing at all for over a decade.

I mean exposed to the internet sure you can get any delicious vulnerabilities, but if this install is connected to a LAN private network ,where the router has some kind of firewall, well in rare occasions will happen. in my case I have few machines running EoL OS and its connected to LAN network all the time, and I don't have issues with that. I don't deal with reinstalling Windows frequently. heck, one of my oldest XP machines still rocking a 15 year old installation to this day and its running fast as it can with little maintenance.

On the contrary. There is a free version of modern 365 BUT you have to be considered a developer. Microsoft gives it to developers for free as a possible charity tax write off via their developer program (and so they can benefit from your free work if possible). The free license has to get renewed and approved by them so if they notice you are a normy trying to be sneaky then the renewal gets denied. I help develop source ports, mods, software, scripts, and Windows optimizations so I get it for free but I also remove their telemetry and spying from the OS lol

If we can't restore it, then we install Linux Mint and Libre Office which is free and for our community of low-income and deep-poverty clients is an excellent choice. 99% of people don't do much more than write a letter on Word, or add up a few cells in Excel, so the free Office online would be fine for them. I had to buy Office desktop licences for a charity I worked for, only to find that everyone was using the Office 365 icon to access Office online anyway. Fortunately, licences for non-profits and education are quite cheap, and even business licences aren't expensive over normal software lifespans. A decent copy of Office for one employee over three years is probably cheaper than the nasty bulk-buy tea or coffee cost over the same period.
For the home user, it's also possible to get an Office 2019 key cheaply, so there is no point risking viruses, or even font incompatibility, by using an old version.
Office has improved a lot since 2010, and we aren't talking about high-end stuff either. Anyone using it on a professional level - working in an office - wouldn't want to use anything less than 2021 because it makes life easier for them.
