Nice build, doing all that grinding and welding with your carbs out and the intakes open though isn't something I'd recommend, also degreasing and painting the engine with all the open orifices probably wasn't the best idea either. Beautiful bike though.

what an incredible transformation, i love and own motorcycles. the engine looks brand new. i love this channel because you will have a stab at anything and everything. video quality needs some improvement but you mentioned your go-pro was broke the other day. TFW television ROCKS!
A lot of my video quality gets scaled down in production...I've always used windows movie maker because it's super easy, but it limits my output to 1080p/25fps...I'd prefer 1080/30, it looks a little better, but I'm now equipped to be able to shoot 2~4k. I'm playing with a new video editor program that will help my output and production quality.
They are really fun, neat little bikes. They are one of the most aesthetically pleasing bikes to tinker around with, in my opinion...and they're pretty cheap to find in rotting wrecks headed for scrap. How are you going to address your front wheel? Did you get lace rings for the rear or is is some other setup? I want to do laced wheels because it's the only way I'll be able to easily get a 4.5x17 on the back, and I can do it pretty inexpensively with rings and a cheap hoop off eBay...but setting something up for the front either needs a $400 hub just to start off, or even more money in machining to build an axle and spacers for the rotors and other hardware. I like the look of the R6 wheel with the Comstar on the back, but I would like to have a 160 back there.

I may revisit the rear wheel but the options that I had available were just very well suited to adapting over. I spent quite a while carving out a GT650R rear wheel to try and make it work but there just wasn't enough material to mount the drive ring. The CX wheel is not "bad" and it lets me run a suitable tire...I may swap it out for a wider 17" wheel or do some laces some day.
Thanks! The forks are 2006 Yamaha YZF-R6R. The stem was the correct length. I had to use a set of conversion bearings from all balls racing to get them to fit.

You have to be careful about the years if you go with R6 forks is all I can really attest to...I don't know if I got the wrong year put in or what the bottom bearing they sent me was a mm too small. I just turned the stem down to correct it but it was a bit of a hassle. All balls has the whole chart listed...basically you'll select your bike and then the correct bearings for the donor bike will be displayed in a large list. www.allballsracing.com/forkconversion

That's a really tough question...I usually collect parts "I might use some day" along the way, so I had almost everything on site already. I buy anything that looks like it might be a "good deal", part out what I know I'll never use. It makes putting an investment cost on finished builds very hard. If I had to go out and buy everything I used on the bike at market value right now it'd be close to the $5,000usd area. The reality was...less...but I couldn't begin to speculate how much.
After cleaning it very, very thoroughly I used an etching primer and then a wheel paint...both Rustoleum products. Cleaning the motor and the etching primer are most important. The valve covers and oil filter cover are rustoleum appliance epoxy.
