How I taught my guide dog to retrieve dropped items!

  • Hope you enjoy this fun training video with my beautiful guiding angel. Arabella is from Guide Dogs for the Blind. GDB does not train their dogs on task like this, but it’s so nice to know that we as handlers are able to extend and enhance their skills and training after we bring them home from school.
    Let me know if you have any questions about what I covered in the video. Thank you again so much for taking the time to watch, if you enjoy our content, I so encourage you to leave a comment to say hello, and remember to like, subscribe, and turn on your notification bell. Hugs and love 💛

    Her lil tail was wagging the whole time! She loves helping!! Too many times I've seen handlers who work their dogs, and the dog keeps their head low and their tail doesn't wag, either solely focused on getting the snack, or too afraid to disobey, but Arabella's tail was so happy the whole time! And she kept coming back for kisses and love, and she was so motivated to go get EVERYTHING even before you asked for it! What a happy, lovely team! You guys are so adorable and I love you guys! Lots of love and hearts for you two!

Thank you for sharing, I love meeting you all and hearing your perspective. Take care, I hope to hear from you again, God bless :-)

      Thanks, she loves to talk LOL, just like her mommy ha ha. And very true, they love retrieving things which is great! However, my first angel Antonia was not like that at all and she was a yellow lab as you know. I guess every dog is unique which makes them special :-)

      @@JoyRoss Very true, they are all so different! But their different personalities are so much of what make them who they are and make us love them! Aslan, my first Service Dog who is a Chocolate lab and now retired from public access, HATED water for the first 3 1/2 years of his life! He finally learned to love it, but he jumped over puddles for YEARS, just as an example of how much he hated it. ☺️💜

    Hi Joy, this is the most precious video ever! You have done an amazing job of teaching Arabella to pick up dropped items. I have a guide dog, a beautiful German Shepherd and I have tried to teach her just to Bring me her toy, playing fetch. She always gets the toy, she can find it no matter where it is in our house, but she takes it to the corner of the kitchen and sits on it. She is not a retriever. I have decided that it must not be in her dog DNA. She is more a, hoarder. When I go to the corner of my kitchen I will find missing toys and socks and dish towels but she just won’t bring them back to me. So I know you have really worked consistently and diligently to teach these skills to Arabella because she really did a phenomenal job for you. Just amazing! Thanks for sharing and stay safe and happy! Love, Beverly

    • @JoyRoss
      @JoyRoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! And LOL, your dog sounds so precious. You know, my Antonia was not a retriever either even though she was a yellow lab. She was not interested in playing these kind of games Ha. However, I didn’t try teaching her these kind of things until she was seven years old. But back to Arabella, she is so smart and she has learned the skills so fast. I always enjoy your comments, please never stop saying hello and sharing with me your stories and thoughts. Hope you’re doing well and staying safe! Hugs and blessings :-)

      @Bama Blind had a GSD myself. As they are working dogs, it shouldn't be too difficult to get your dog to retrieve items and bring them to you. Suggest you get a clicker like Joy uses (I used one as well) and the dog will quickly learn that they only will hear the clicker and receive a reward upon completion of the command. Best of luck to you.

    • @bamablind9916
      @bamablind9916 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jeff Burnham hi Jeff, I do actually have a clicker just like Joy‘s clicker and as a matter of fact, as I was watching Joy‘s video with the clicker sound emanating, My guide dog Gretchen kept running to my iPhone and putting her curious nose on my dark screen. LOL. She was quite confused. I walk around my town regularly and use the clicker and treats and Gretchen is wonderful with locating poles and trash cans and benches etc., so she understands the clicker, but she just doesn’t like to share her toys or pick up after herself. Joy’s video, however has inspired me to keep trying and maybe, just maybe, something in Gretchens powerful dog brain might click. LOL. Thanks for sharing and again thank you Joy for sharing. Love Beverly

    Black Labs are natural retrievers so this comes very easily for her. When she sees you dropping or throwing things, to her its a game. The goal to work for is having Arabella not see the item you drop, then call her to you and ask her to find it. The clicker is essential for training purposes as the dog begins to associate the sound of the clicker as confirmation she performed the task correctly. Used one to great success with my GSD. Great video Joy and Arabella!

    • @JoyRoss
      @JoyRoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, and LOL, I did not think about doing that for this demonstration. I wish I had thought of that before. Anyways, obviously she does well with that too. Many times I will drop something and she’s not even in the room. I call her to come and then I just point to the ground and ask her to find it! She doesn’t know what that it is, but she knows that mommy is pointing to the ground and asking her to find something. She starts walking all around the house searching for anything on the ground that she can bring to me LOL. So stinking smart Ha

    • @jeffburnham6611
      @jeffburnham6611 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JoyRoss thank-you for the reply. If you want Arabella to focus on finding an object you dropped, that she didn't see, try limiting your your commands to one or two words. Dogs like Labs are very intelligent, and recognize words like sit, down, heel, etc. It's when we talk to them in full sentences that they cock their heads to one side and give us that quizzical look. By doing what you're doing, pointing at the ground and telling Arabella, "Find it", she will learn the object she is looking for is close to you. Best wishes and continued good luck on your training :)
