How I identify, sort, and fold my laundry completely blind!

- Every day tasks can be challenging when you are blind, but over the past 12 years of my complete blindness journey, I have learned how to compensate for my loss through my other senses.
As you will see/hear in this video, my finger eyes LOL, they are my eyes and the way I see when I am doing tasks like laundry. I don’t even feel blind, because I see so much in so many other ways. My world is not black even though I see no light, my mind is powerful, and my spirit is strong!
Regardless of my challenges I face, where there is a will, there is always a way! You just have to get creative, determined, and keep a positive and joy filled spirit 💛

Joy, when you said, "I don't feel blind," I thought, you don't live like you are blind. You have so much confidence that it makes everything seem easier than it probably is.
Oh my goodness, thank you! That makes me so happy, just because I love pulling down all of the misconceptions that society has placed on blindness. Just because my eyes do not work at all LOL, does not mean I am not capable, right? So glad you see me the way I see myself 💛

You are incredibly intelligent. The fact that you can memorize so many different textures & shapes and know exactly what it is, including the color and design is impressive. I think a lot of people would forget.
Thank you so much, I have made efforts over the past 12 years to keep all of my visual memories intact and very much a ALIVE! It doesn’t even seem like I have been completely blind for 12 years, I see everything in my mind just as if I saw the world yesterday. It’s truly a gift from God and I am so grateful! Good heavens, I wish I could remember every single piece in my closet. Even though I’m blind I was not blessed with a remarkable memory. Lmao! I am working on color coordinating my closets so I can have a better time trying to remember what color is what. Anyways, I hope you are staying safe during this quarantine.

Fantastic to watch how you sort through your laundry, I was expecting that many socks to be a great challenge. You made short work of it. So impressive how you have mastered so many of the tasks we sighted find mundane. You made laundry sorting exciting again. I have my sight but I will never find it boring ever again. It really shows everyone how much texture of a fabric can give us as much information as someone sighted looking at colours. I use a Colorino Talking Colour Sensor to sort colours from whites as well as working out different coloured tops that are all of the same brand and style, hence the Colorino Colour Sensor use. I just wish now mainstream company would make their washing machines accessible wth speech output,

Thank you, I am so glad you’re enjoying these videos. So very true! Life is full of many challenges for all of us, but we can’t just give up when things get tough. Hi Joy, this was a great video showing how to do a task without functional vision. I wish that my floors were as clean as yours. Mine have way too much guide dog for that could potential he contaminate my clean clothes. Socks are definitely the most troublesome task and I keep a basket of single, unmatched socks so that when the match eventually appears, I can then put the two together. When my girls were little, matching socks was one of their major household chores and I explained that it was a necessity for the family. As they got older, I started marking all of the socks with a unique mark at the top edge using puff paint. Each pair had its own unique mark that was identical with both socks. Because the puff paint launchers very well and is very tactile, this made the chore of sock sorting so very easy for me and flawless. I would just match circles to circle dots two dots, squares two squares, exes two exes and so long. You really did a great job of showing how laundry is sorted and folded and I think the general public believes that this task is just not possible without vision. Thanks for proving them wrong. LOL. LOL, I miss getting dressed up pretty ha. Been in my house for eight weeks and haven’t been able to get in the car and go anywhere at all. You know, why not get dressed up to do laundry to make a video LOL, might as well. Whatever makes you happy, this is the time to do it :-)
@@JoyRoss It reminds me of the stereotypical wife from the 50's and 60's where you would see her dressed up in a dress, pearl necklace and a pair of heels doing the house work! Pretty and put together!
I love this video! Joy your awesome. I wish i had a mama like you. I literally cant remember the last time my mom washed my clothes. Yes im moved out, own my own home, married, and have a toddler, but im only 25 and have no recolection of my mom washing my clothes with hers. Iv always washed my own laundry since I can remember. Like even since before I had my first period, I washed my own laundry. Yes your blind but i dont see that in you. The thing that stands out to me, is how good of a mama you are. You inspire me to be as good of a mama as you are to your babies to my baby. You and your girls are so connected, I love it, its so sweet! Stay young Joy!
Oh my goodness, can I just say how touching your comment was. Thank you for encouraging me through your own story. Sometimes it’s easy to take for granted the things that we have. I am so sorry you didn’t have a mother to take care of you the way that I am able to take care of my girls, the way I choose to take care of my girls, but you are going to be all of that, everything that you didn’t have, you’re going to be that for your precious baby girl. I can already tell just through your heart and through your words what an amazing mother you are to your daughter, and the mother you are going to be as she grows up. It’s important obviously as our kids grow to release them and encourage them to take on their own responsibilities, but as a mother, it feels so good to do things for them just because you can. Thank you again for sharing a part of your life with me. I’m sending you the biggest hugs and the most beautiful blessings. I love this so much!! I have sight and you match socks faster than I do!! Also that floral arrangement behind you on that buffet table between the two arm chairs is so beautiful! I know you have said you love making arrangements have you thought of having a online shop we could order some arrangements you do...
I'm the same way the inside out clothes when I'm doing laundry. I never fold or hang up clothes inside out but I know a lot of people who do!

Joy, you have a wonderful great sense of touch and also memory! Sam, from [The Blind Life.] He uses mesh laundry bags to keep socks separated and matched.
Thanks so much, I definitely see extremely well with my finger eyes :-). And about Sam‘s blind life, each one of us has to do what works best for our lifestyle. Me LOL, I don’t have the patience to sort through dirty socks before I throw everything in the washer LOL. Between three girls and myself Ha, that would be a lot of work ☺️

I gave up on matching socks a long time ago.
There is a portable device called ORCAM that can read texts for you from video camera. It is small, and worn on just a pair of ordinary glasses.

Thanks so much :-). And about Christmas gifts, I am pretty good at figuring things out just by feel. However, if something is in a package box, that’s really challenging for me to differentiate. So, for the most part I’m able to detect and figure out the gift, and other times I need a little extra help, a helping eye 😉 ha

I used to have a sock bag whenever I would do my laundry when I was in school back in Austin when I went to school six years ago back in the school for the blind and Austin are used to have a sock bag because we would lose all my socks to does that ever happen to you? Or any of your plant friends? Or your daughters?
A sock bag just sounds smart. I think I'm going to start that. My cousin made everyone pin their socks together

Joy when you take an Uber to your girls scbool are you not scared about giving out the schools address? I have a niece that's 12 that my mother in law has custody of and my niece's mom came to pick her up from school. My niece is scared of her own mom every time her mom comes over to visit her she locks herself in her room. My nieces mom has gone up to her school to try to kidnap her before.
At home we all have different brand of soks so we know of who they belong

Do different colors feel different? Or do you just know they're a different colour because you've been told about it? That's what amazes me
I know colors of clothing because of texture or specific details that are tactile. However, there are some things that I have that are the same style but different colors. The dying process can actually change the texture of the fabric. My red top may feel different than the exact top in black just because of the dye. So yes and no LOL. I guess it just depends on the clothing. Did it help answer your question? I have to honestly have a great memory to remember all the details of all of my clothing, and remember the color that matches the texture LOL. I guess it keeps my mind very active and very alive haha :-) blessings

Y dosnt the daughter just match the socks in the sock basket for everyone then everyone's good to go and don't have to take the time to wait on trying to find them..just sayin
