    This is a pretty cool guitar that has lots of tonal opportunities. I would've changed a few cosmetics up to get it closer to Black Beauty specs, but it sounds nice!

      Thanks for the review Austin.
      I'll agree with you about the binding, multi-ply would have been great.
      All the switching options are nice but maybe too complicated.
      Would have been nice to see Les Paul Black Beauty pickup switching with each pickup being able to be tapped.
      Still a nice effort by Fender that kind of falls short.
      This Black version makes the cream version look more desirable.

      @@RJ-vv8he I have never owned one because 95% of the ones I tried were shitty guitars. Shoddy fretwork, tooling marks, paint on the binding, terrible tuning stability, and uninspiring sound... I've seen older Gibsons that were (very) expensive but cool guitars though, I'm mainly talking about what Gibson has put out in the last 15 years. Also I don't like weight relief. Not saying I'll never own a Gibson but I have yet to try one that speaks to me. In the meantime my japanese Tokai is wayyyyy better than the Gibsons I've tried for a fraction of the price. And since I'm french I couldn't care less about the american pride so I'm not biased.

Expensive yes but Gibson has been like that ever since they came out. Google it and take into account inflation and you’ll see. A much easier way to think about the controls:
    Tone down: regular H-H with coil splits on the volumes.
    Tone up: HHH, tied to bridge.
    I had an SG Custom with this setup years ago. Once you start thinking like that, it's way less complicated.

      @@lordmanshaft1112 ...and at 11:31, there it is! That's a dealbreaker for me, I only use handwired point-to-point guitars for the most pristine toan ;)

    • @Robstafarian
      @Robstafarian 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The switching scheme is simple; here is the entire scheme in a few sentences:
      1. The selector switch works as on a Les Paul.
      2. Activating the first volume knob's switch splits (not taps) the neck pickup.
      3. Activating the second tone knob's switch adds the middle pickup in parallel with the bridge pickup.
      4. Activating the second volume knob's switch splits (not taps) the bridge pickup.

    • @Robstafarian
      @Robstafarian 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joermnyc Firstly, coil splitting is not synonymous with coil tapping (this guitar uses coil splitting). Secondly, the middle pickup is not wired directly to the output jack: this is why it is impossible to use the neck and middle pickups together.

  • @ColonelRPG
    @ColonelRPG 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The controls don't seem that complicated, they just explain it weird.
    The push/push buttons basically do the following:
    Vol 1 - splits neck pickup
    Vol 2 - splits bridge pickup
    Tone 2 - turns middle pickup for positions 2 and 1 on the pickup selector
    EASY!

    I too would have liked to be able to split the middle pup and also add it to the neck pup.

    I never knew people took apart their guitars after they bought them and tested them like the way collectors do. I just pick up a guitar and play it. If I like it, I like it. If I don’t, I put it back on the rack. I guess I’m old school.

  • @StaticRick1
    @StaticRick1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think the discoloration of the pickups is just where the plastic covering wasn't tight to the metal and allowed some air in there. My guess is it won't take long before you don't notice it any longer as the rest of the gold finish takes on the same oxidation.

    This model is definitely speaking to me. I usually prefer my Fenders to feature maple fingerboard, but the amount of similarities to the Black Beauty is overriding that preference. In any case, let's lose the Bigsby for a stop bar, please.

  • @bubu89136
    @bubu89136 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’d put in a Gibson poker chip, because the Fender one is stupid. I don’t usually like these new models, but this one looks very cool. The switching system is pretty cool as well, although it’s pretty complicated. I’m impressed by the tonal variety, and how chimey it can sound with humbuckers. I would also prefer the machines to have gold metal to match the rest of the hardware, but overall I think Fender did a bang up job with this model, and Trogly did a bang up demo, as well. Wow, $2,500. It ain’t cheap. When all is said and done, give me a Tele, or a Les Paul. It’s true, most guitar players, the longer they play, want the same old stuff as always.

    I thought this was the coolest of all the Parallel Universe guitars. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it on a NAMM video. So I was really quite waiting for this review.
    I was never going to be able to justify purchasing this guitar. Because it’s so expensive in because I’m just a sucker guitar player. Also from what I understand they sold out very very quickly.
    But seeing this review helped to defuse that mixture of guitar lust and regret that pops up from time to time.
    Thanks, Trogly!

      I’m back to lament not having purchased this guitar. Anyway I think it’s sold out very quickly. But it was super expensive than I remember. I’m trying to figure out what the original price was. There’s one in mint condition on reverb right now for about 3500. I thought it was about 2500 when it came out

    Woof.
    So, I've been a Trogly admirer for some time...
    I record A LOT. I gravitate towards two types of instruments (acoustic and electric): very versatile; wonderful at the thing it does best.
    I knew the Fender three pickup Telecaster Parallel ii with Bigsby piqued my interest. I also knew that it was a jillion bucks.
    That said. PERFECT... WORTH IT...
    I screen-shot Trogly's nice chart on how the controls work (as I have yet to see it elsewhere and Fender has taken the guitar's page down for now). ESPECIALLY Since it (apparently) has nice AlNiCo iv magnets in it!
    Thank you for the video and for finding out the coil specs.
    Warmest regards,
    Jim of Vivid Peace

      Great guitars, Mary! But they need a little work to fully enjoy. Definately change strings and clean it properly, as they are really dirty out of the box. Saddles need smoothing and check nut and action ( maybe give it some relief, they tend to set it up really low action) as it could buzz otherwise. Ernie Ball slinkys work really well!

    • @Robstafarian
      @Robstafarian 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That switching scheme is not nearly as versatile as it could be. That said, compromises were made to make it look somewhat like a Les Paul. I think all three-pickup guitars should have five-way blade switches.

    Nah, you're good with a strict user profile and an adblocker extension.
    As a web developer, I was never explicitly asked to collect any telemetry via custom JavaScript. Nor did I encounter custom tracking code in any code that was developed on the project before I joined it.
    What I was asked to do virtually on all projects is to include Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, etc.

    • @Robstafarian
      @Robstafarian 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just to clarify, this guitar uses coil splitting rather than coil tapping (contrary to what you may have heard, there is a difference). As for when to use coil splitting, making that decision does not require more thought than you would use to decide which pickup(s) to use for a particular part: split the coils if you want less output, less mids, and more treble without changing the "voice" as much as changing pickups would.

  • @Comakino

    Disappointing they couldn't fix the pickguard round the side like on a Les Paul to avoid making marks on the top, I would prob. fit a stop tailpiece too but nice to have the option. The guitar is a beast, but ultimately see why it's not a mainline model

    Another amazing review. A bit disappointed in the guitar though. It looks so amazing, but I would’ve gone to push Gibson’s buttons. Neck, Middle and Bridge out of phase, and Bridge. I’m a simple creature, I don’t want to understand 8 different combinations 😂. If I bought one of those, I’d probably convert it to that honestly.

    This reminds me of a BC Rich Rich Bich I used to own. It had so many controls on it that there's no way you could try and use them in a gig. Just like this one. You would have to have a chart with you on stage to set it up between songs. But nice in the studio. This in one of those guitars a session musician would take with him. So no matter what the engineer wanted, you could deliver the tones with ease
