  • Black Sabbath : Live Evil : Super Deluxe Edition : CD and Vinyl Box Set Review
This is a very honest review looking at the positives and negatives in this set and what could have been done to make it better. However the Remix by Wyn Davis is absolutely awesome and will make this an essential part of anyone Black Sabbath Collection.
    Back Ground
1982, and twelve years after their debut, the fathers of heavy metal finally released their first official live album. And what a cracker it is. And the reason for releasing it was allegedly threefold; a reaction to the 1980 unofficial live set Live At Last, the 1982 live release by original vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, consisting of Sabbath covers, and the signing of a new publishing deal which mean a fairer split of the songwriting royalties.
    Live Evil Release History
The album has previously had single CD (edited), double CD and remastered reissues, and in line with the current ongoing BMG campaign, we get the Deluxe issue in a box with extras. But how deluxe is it?
A CD and LP edition are available and first out is a replica tour poster, a replica tour programme (quite substantial, and bigger on the LP version), and a book. And what’s lovely about this book is a substantial essay, you know, proper sleeve notes, with a few pictures. It’s clearly much less press cuttings and rare overseas vinyl based. So read it as you listen and enjoy. Then there are two double CDs / LPs. Both come in gatefold sleeves, and in both cases the card is a little more substantial than usual, and the CDs and LPs are in anti static sleeves.
The first set, the remastered album, replicates the original sleeve, and compared to the last remaster, there is definitely an improvement. The music, it sounds excellent. But if that’s all you want, I’m not sure the difference warrants the price point. Yes, it’s expensive, and for some reason the European release is 30% more expensive than the US edition on Rhino.
The second set in a similar package but different artwork, is the remix. Yes they’ve remixed the album, and this is superb. Some layers come put with significantly more clarity, especially the drums. You can actually make out the separate layers.
The package is, without a doubt, deluxe, and the remastered version of the album is too. However, musical content, given the deluxe tag, and price, and that a large portion of the target audience will have the previous remaster, are you going to want more? Well, yes.
Rory Gallagher’s Irish Tour 74, UFO’s Strangers In The Night, Deep Purple’s Made In Japan and most recently Thin Lizzy’s Live And Dangerous are just some of the live albums recorded over several nights that have since been reissued as multi disc sets featuring the entire individual shows. So that, here, for a live album of this standing, is a major and obvious missed opportunity. We’re not privy to what they had available to go back to, but even the most gold placed package (which this genuinely is) costs that much, one would feel a little short changed.
Gripes aside, it is a wonderful sounding and wonderfully packaged album that will be hard not to enjoy.

It would be nice if they released the remix as a stand alone. It's probably the only item in the box that people really want to hear.

I almost got to name this LP myself. I was long time friends with Mark Forster, Sabbath personnel director, and I suggested the title "Legally Live" in reference to all the bootlegs they had out on them. Mark told me that Terry Butler was advocating for that title but went with Live Evil instead. Oh the good old days...

This remix has simply blown me away, as others have said unlike lots of other live albums including the original mix of this , the new remix really makes you feel like you are there. RJD for me personally is one of , if not the best HM vocalists of all times, and hearing this now is just incredible and yet another reminder just how amazing a. this version of BS were and b. how incredible RJD's live vocals were.

The remix is so good in high-resolution, digital audio format, that I teared up when I put my headphones on. Stunning. The original mix was unlistenable. It was a flat, dry old tire. The 2023 remix is musically juicy!

Just got my cd boxset today and immediately put on the remix version. WOW. I've long count of how many times I have heard this album but this was like the very time I ever heard it. So clear and So in your face. Still wish the crowd was a bit louder in the mix but the music sounds fantastic. Igot goosebumps as soon as Neon Knights kicks in Ronnie started singing. Mandatory purchase if you are fan of this live album.

Phil, Thank you so much for such an insightful and researched review. Your videos are always done with care and attention to detail. Informative and with great value to all of us who are hard working fans of particular genres. This album will always hold great sentimental value for me. It was my 2nd concert ever attended, (Madison Square Garden). What began as a revelation to me when I first put on the Heaven & Hell album at age 15, feeling the powerful combination of Dio's vocals and the band, culminated at attending the Black & Blue tour and being in awe for the duration. This was a must have for me, all those years ago. Have bought it many times in every single incarnation...vinyl, cassette, CD....and now a 40th anniversary remix....one can dream of a Blu-ray of the concert. what could have been....I will have goosebumps again regardless, as I have placed my order and will receive it in 2 days. Thanks to your review, I know I've absolutely made the right decision.
P.S. Technical Ecstasy and Sabotage are next. Thank You !

The addition of the Portland show on that tour, was the clincher, along with a new mix of Mob Rules, the song. I have seen the CD boxset recently for £59,in store. I have the CD edition that crams the original album on to one disc. I have heard a lot of good reports about the new mix, so I’m feeling twitchy again.. Hi Phil, the reason the is no additional content is because Tony has signed an agreement with Sharon that there will be no music released under the name Black Sabbath unless it either has Ozzy singing or it has been released before. Tony Martin posted about this when he was looking for outtakes for the upcoming Martin era reissues. This is when Iommi told him he could not release any of it because of that agreement. So any other non Ozzy upcoming reissues will also just be remixed/remastered.

    • @NowSpinningMagazine

That is correct but for this release the reason was different as all the rights were own by Tony, Geezer and Wendy.

HI Phil, great, honest, from the heart review. Here's my tuppence worth - I bought the vinyl copies of Paranoid, Vol.4, and Sabotage. I did pick up Technical Ecstasy in the cd box. Here's the thing, I started watching your film sitting in the garden, and by 18:27, I had to retire to my Den and take the three vinyl boxes of the shelf. These are hefty beasts, Vol. 4 is heavy on out-takes which are marvellous and show the 'process' of recording it; Sabotage chucks two mixes and a double 1975 American tour gig; Paranoid gives us a triple live album - A TRIPLE LIVE ALBUM.. These are truly magnificent boxes worthy of the 'Super' label. Just now looking through them I'm still going "WoW!".. I would love to add Live Evil to the collection, desperately so.. but I've got the 2014 Deluxe Edition and it sounds great. I don't need another two mirror images no matter how more amazing they sound - I want alternate, raw, concerts.. The source material a la Live & Dangerous, Waiting For Columbus and Strangers In The Night. I think the unexpected intervention of gravity in your film said it all. Unless I see it in the 'Reduced to Clear' section at about £30, then I'm out. I may be old, but I'm not a fool and I don't particularly appreciate being treated like one. [any record company employees reading / watching - please listen to your target audience, it would be more than worth your while..]

Excellent, frank review Phil. I still have my original vinyl of Live Evil which I bought back in January 1983. This album has always been a favourite of mine within my Sabbath collection. I bought the 2004 remaster on CD format not long after it was issued, and found it to be ok, but nothing special to my average non-audiophile ears. Very recently, I saw this recent issue CD box set on the shelf, only one copy of it, at my local CD shoppe. I hesitated buying it at first as I wasn't sure if there was much value added by another remaster, or a remix. The booklet seemed to be an interesting added attraction. As there were no in-depth reviews yet about the quality of this new boxset out in most media; given the scarcity of copies at my shoppe, and the fact that it was only $59.00 CAD (ie: 35 UK pounds), I decided to buy it.
----Now so far I haven't opened it up....I have been waiting. I have been steeling myself up for possible disappointment and buyer's remorse. I am now very heartened by your review, especially as it relates to the fine sonic qualities of the remix version. I will be approaching my first listen now with enthusiasm rather than trepidation. I agree totally with you on the missed opportunity; ie: no inclusion of any other additional recordings from other performances. Unless they were totally sub-par, or riddled with errors, or bothersome noise; ok then fair enough. But if there were in fact other quite acceptable live captures from other nights, why same weren't added into this new box reissue seems very much a let down.
---Once again Phil, great review. Thank you for reflecting several of my own thoughts about this package, and for giving me renewed hope about the sonics of my recent purchase!

Hi Phil. Just watched the video for the second time (I have a habit of rewatching them lol). I had recently made a comment on CDs v Vinyl, and I appreciate the comment you made regarding how the vinyl version had elevated your experience of the box set. I think it was important that you were honest about how it made you feel opening up the vinyl box for the first time. I believe this is a big reason why many people prefer vinyl. After all we are paying for the experience, but of course not everyone can afford it. I do think the real issue is the cost. I’ve had a look at CD and vinyl box sets, and in my opinion, the experience was totally different. Not trying to dismiss the CD. I grew up with them. However, I think this is the reality.

I have all the other Sabbath boxsets on both vinyl and CD, and was very on the fence about getting this one. Now that I have seen it, it looks as though I need it for the rest of my collection and also much of what you had to say has sold me on the idea. My biggest issue with this album was with the mix and sound quality, which I always found murky and dull. I am ever so interested in hearing this remix now , as I feel it may have been justified finally with this new release. Thank you again.

The "Remix" is absolutely stunning!!!!!! This isn't just a remixed version of the original. It's got some extra vocal bits, clearer effects on the drums and Tony's guitar, and you can really hear that Vinny is playing open concert toms. They have a specific sound and impact. It made the album even more menacing and powerful! I couldn't agree more with your assessment of the "remix" version.

I have every one of thwir albums probably in triplicate or more, in several medias, as well as all of the boxsets, and stacks of bootleg live albums too. But anyways, these boxsets are the best. Every one of the Ozzy era ones comee with its own double or triple live album and the studio album and outtakes, a tour program, a giant poster and hard cover book. That is an incredibly wonderful set. I love them all.

A nice objective review, once again, Phil. I would be very interested to hear the remixed version, maybe they could release a version of just that, without all the other "collectable" stuff, and a lower price. I have seen and read , from RJD, that this album is full of overdubs. I have noticed this especially on the guitar solo from N.I.B.. You mentioned the drum sound, I would love to hear "Master of Reality" remixed, mainly the drums, everything else is a great heavy sound...no remix needed there. Thanks for the review, I think that I'll stick with my original 2 disc copy for now. This album makes you realize how unique Ozzy's and Ronnie's voices are, I love Ronnie, but hearing him sing the old Sabb. tunes just seems a bit off?? On the other hand : what would Ozzy sound like if he sang the Dio tunes ??? Could be funny ?? Carry-on

  • @patriotpizzaman

I have to agree with you 100% on the remix! What strikes you immediately are the drums, and Geezer's bass are so powerful! My first thought was that I would have been a bigger fan of this album back in the day had it sounded like this. I really didn't enjoy this live album at the time and I played Speak of the Devil to death! It was so much better to my ears at the time. Now I'm of the mind that Sharon and Ozzy should go back and have a remix done and release both nights performances in their entirety with the remix for their own Super Deluxe release. Honestly, where are the Super Deluxe releases of the two Randy albums? They must not have any recordings from those sessions besides the ones we've already heard because the metal community has been clamoring for them to empty out the archives and they've done nothing at all. Very sad but, Sabbath has done a decent job of getting after it. We'd love to hear the remix of Born Again now!

    • @briangumphrey7603
      @briangumphrey7603 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I totally agree about the remix !! I would have been an even bigger fan of this album had it sounded like the remix!! As far as the Ozzy stuff goes there was a Blizzard Of Ozz/Diary Of A Madman box set released back in 2011 that had an extra live disc of a Randy Rhoads concert. Bob Daisley had a bunch of recordings of band rehearsal which were high quality and offered them for a smaller portion of royalties but Sharon and Ozzy wouldn't agree to it as they wanted a one time buy out kind of deal. It's a damn shame! I would love to hear the rehearsal tapes and also the live gigs of the original band Osbourne/Rhoads/Daisley/Kerslake. Daisley did actually post a couple of snippets of these rehearsal tapes online if you look up Bob Daisley "Holy Grail" you might still be able to find it

Ozzy loathes "Speak Of The Devil". He thought it disrespected Randy Rhodes. Epic released it without even asking him. I sincerely doubt he and Sharon would sign off on any "new" version of it.Furthermore, Brad Gillis would need to approve of it as well, and he may not care to. Who knows ?

Excellent video. Probably like many other viewers I saw the box wobble slightly and I wanted to grab it before it crashed to the floor. No damage? That must be one sturdy box. I'm tempted to buy the CD box just for the remix but I simply cannot justify it: I have what is basically the same setlist but from different gigs on a number of CDs already. Should the remix come out separately in the future I will not hesitate to buy it.

Hello Mr Aston, Thanks for this nice box set review. My problem along with the price is what you mentioned about the 3 nights concerts which would have been indeed THE ultimate edition, however been a sucker for Black Sabbath...I bought both box sets as i have the 96 castle remasters, deluxe and a deluxe Japanese edition, I like the remix but noticing the different way some tracks sounded kind of made me appreciate the original release more! Which to me seems like the audience voice was added to the setlist after they played them in an empty concert hall.
I wish if the great RJD was still with us to see what he'd think about this edition, as we know he disliked the final result of this masterpiece live performance.

Thank you for the detailed review. I have seen Sabbath 3 times. First time with Ronnie, second time with Ian and lastly with Ozzy. I don't have this lp and am on the fence on buying it. I agree with what you said, i.e. where are the other songs that could have gone into additional lps. And I also agree with you in that most fans already have the albums/CDs from bands they grew up with, so it would have been nice to offer the fans something more than what they already have. Speaking of missed opportunity, I am a huge fan of Dio's first 2 albums so I was excited when I heard Wendy was rereleasing Holy Diver again, but when I saw what was included I felt it was a huge missed opportunity. I personally don't want to hear out takes of songs and I can't believe one side of the second lp had nothing on it. I mean wow, why not include live versions of songs that we haven't heard before. Needless to say I didn't buy the rerelease.

The Volume 4 vinyl I have but only bought it because I was able to get it for $25 US dollars. What held me back from getting it when it was first released was the outtakes. Two LPs seemed overkill. The remastered sounded like they put a large thick blanket over the speakers and sounded muffled to a large degree. So much, that there is no reason to ever listen to the remastered again, which is why I wait on the vinyl box set. I will buy the remix on vinyl if they issue a copy of the remix alone.

What pissed me off about this edition is that as a mandatory bundle, it made compulsive having to pay the high price for get it instead of stand alone releases (like Pink Floyd did) of the CD and vinyl versions, wich at least would've worked on an affordable price.

I preordered the CD set for 49$ U.S. from Amazon. Originally there was supposed to be a video for Live Evil , for which there are some murky clips available on TH-cam. A video would have been a nice addition to the box set, assuming there's some footage of reasonable quality.

Thank you for watching, I agree some video footage would have been an added bonus. Phil

having the technical ecstasy vinyl set I can say i'm very happy with it, the book and tour program is great so are the albums. I am kind of annoyed with the live evil one, four all the other vinyl boxsets it has been 5 vinyl (if you include the single in the sabotage boxset as one) but for live evil it is only 4 LP's and it is still the same price. also on the idea of other shows all the boxsets have had 4CD's and 5LP's so trying to speeze multiple nights onto 4 cd's would be hard. one more thing, one LP can hold 40 minutes of music and a CD can hold 80 minutes of music, so why is the album spread across 2 CD's there are versions of it on one CD, maybe if it was put on one CD then we would get the other nights on the tour.

Great video Phil, but way too expensive for me. i'll stick with my 2004 and 2010 cd's until the price drops!

Interesting that they are using a slightly different version of the "Born Again" Hexagramm. Foreshadowing a Born Again Box set? I hope so 🤗🤗
