So, who said China ban traditional Chinese festival, Chinese people never abandoned their culture and China government never ban China festival. China even celebrate Western festival too, like Halloween and Christmas. 😊😊😊China are more open than Western. 😮😮

There must be a way to measure the level of commercial exploitation of all such events. I cannot believe it has not been attempted. One can easily compare Halloween vs. Christmas, for example, anchored on some measure of the event's cultural/religious authenticity. The Commercialization Index (or CI) will probably say that CI(Halloween vs. Christmas) is 300% (of something) and it varies from 800% in Taiwan to 100% in Britain. Just saying.

I was very active in the dragon boat scene in Singapore over a decade ago, but I competed in the "corporate" category (teams representing individual companies). There were some Australian teams that visited, but they were no match for the locals. Before I left Singapore for Australia, the last dragon boat activity I did was to work with out-of-school youth to train them in the sport. We even competed together at one festival held at Kallang River back in 2016.
The best team hands down that I saw participate in a dragon boat event in Singapore was a team of firefighters/volunteers from Hong Kong. Their mixed team was defeating teams of all-male lineups, they were that good.

We also had our dragon boat race here in Kota Kinabalu Sabah Borneo last week. It was from Friday to Sunday.
There were local dragon boats, and the international event in which Australia sends a team or two, male and female, to this event.
The event is held every year at this time.

5th day of 5th month has a religious significance. The dragon boat festival evolved from the zongzi or rice dumpling river offering in memory of Qu Yuan, a politician who lived 2000 years ago.

As a Cantonese born (born in Guangzhou, the capital city of Guangdong province) Chinese American growing up in Boston and living here in Los Angeles, I was having fun watching some video shorts comparing northeast teams (from Liaoning province) sinking their boats to the Cantonese teams and Fujian province teams. Cao Cao during the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280AD) with the Battle of the Red Cliff already predicted that northerners aren’t good at fighting wars in the water. The videos show northeast teams sinking and having to be rescued out of the water, while the Cantonese teams from Guangdong province are doing sudden brakes, abrupt turns, etc. The commentators say “the Cantonese teams race to rescue Qu Yuan. The northeast teams sink down to accompany Qu Yuan while the rest of China commemorates Qu Yuan of the Warring State Period (who committed suicide when he saw he couldn’t rescue his kingdom Chu from being annexed). 😂😂😂. Happy Duanwu Festival and enjoy your zongzi in Zhongshan. Greetings from Los Angeles. 🎉🎉🎉

It commemorates the great poet Qu Yuan, who was the most romantic poet China has ever seen. He lived circa 300 BC. Then, they rowed boats out into the Mi Luo river in a desperate attempt to save the drowning patriot, hence the boat racing we see today. There are some English translations for his works which I strongly recommend to fellow viewers. His timeless imagination never fails to amaze me till this modern day.

Ive done dragon boat racing in Greenwich in the UK about twice or 3 times now...... its exhilarating and its definitely teamwork.... its not even about power or individual power its all about the collective and being on time with the drummer...
When the whole collective is moving as one, you wont even feel it, the whole thing glides! maybe a metaphor for China! Pretty appropriate i think!
Also someone needs to report on the Barclays banks being targeted by pro palestine for the last 3 - 4 months in the UK..... the UK MSM is blackedout on it, only because of a CGTN social post did I connect the dots with my mum getting a text saying dont visit Barclays!
Theres ZERO news or videos about Barclays bank in the UK...... 20 large chain Barclays banks in the UK have been vandalised.... you can guess why the mass blackout on the Barclays.... to avoid widespread panic and widespread withdrawal from Barclays!
Youre going to have to search to find videos on it and none of the news is from outlets like SKY, BBC, SUN, Telegraph etc!!!! Barclays have been targeted for 4 months now!! And only because of a CGTN post have i found out how big of an issue it is

    HiJerry,
Today I heard in the news that the Australian govt has coercively gave an order to a Chinese investor to divest all its shareholding ( which is 80%, of the total) in a major rare earths metals company in Australia within 60 days. Given that both China and Australia are members of the WTO , why wouldn't this coercive act by the Australian govt be seen as a blatant breach of the WTO rules? Is there any redress to this ultimatum from the Australian govt as any prospective buyer is likely to pay almost zero price to acquire the shares?

    • @jerrystakeonchina799
      @jerrystakeonchina799  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, it's a coercive trade practice, the news is about a week old now and contravenes World Trade Organisation Rules but is no doubt supported by the worst offender in the WTO, the USA - of course, we can bet that the corporation that picks up the shares would be US controlled, influenced, or owned.
Australia is in great danger of sacrificing its prosperity, in dealing with its largest and most friendly trading partner, the Premier of which will be in Australia next week, for security against a threat that does not exist from that partner.
I can't explain it without a very long explanation of how the entire Australian economy, it's defence, its intelligence community, its financial industry, retail, communications, transportation, food security agriculture are all controlled by the USA - manufacturing in Australia hardly exists at all and they rely almost 100% on China for manufactured goods - why then place that at jeopardy? the only answer is that Australia is afraid that the US will abandon them to the "risk of invasion" that they believe is coming from China - it's completely ridiculous

Hi Jerry, this is a complete change of subject and wondered if it was of any interest to you? As British citizens living in China and living off the Government Pension plus private pensions, the British government has been overtaxing us for years. The Tax office assumes we are receiving the Government Pension increases each year, but in reality, our Government Pensions are frozen at amount we received on the day we left Britain. So, the total amount of income that the Tax Office is calculating our tax on is too high. In fact, I am paying tax on an additional £4,000 this year that I don’t receive. Having spoken to a fellow Britain living in the same city, the exact same is happening to him. The Tax Office say it is not their problem it’s the fault of the Pension Department and of course the Pension Department blame the Tax Office. The pension Department say is up to us to sort it out and will post the relevant information to us in China. As the envelope is addressed in English, we never receive it. This must be affecting thousands of retired British citizens living in China and elsewhere abroad.

Hi Ron, I don't have anything to offer here as I don't claim the British pension, I have a British police pension but as I only served 10 years, it's not enough to reach the tax threshold, so tax in the UK is never going to be an issue for me.
One really important point about China is that they don't charge tax for pensioners - once you leave the workforce, your pension is tax free - that's a much better system
If I were you, I'd hire a tax consultant but of course, there will be fees for that too - you' really can't win in the capitalist system!!!

Different stories but yes, the day he walked into a river with a heavy rock, was the 5th of the 5th and that's always been the day to pray for rain for the harvest - the two things overlap as different stories
